Hydrogen peroxide oxidation of acyclic and cyclic N,N'-dialkylthioureas furnished S,S-dioxides in agreement with computational predictions. Some s,S,S-trioxides were also isolated. An X-ray crystallographic study of N,N'-diisopropylthiourea dioxide, fIrst synthesised in this work, verilled computational models. In the first results chapter, the first organocatalyst for the carbonyl-ene reaction was discovered and found to give high conversion using 1,3-bis(3,5-bis(trifluoromethyl)phenyl)thiourea. Various carbonyl and alkene precursors were examined in the ene reaction in both catalysed and uncatalysed reactions. Abstract:
The malaria parasite, Plasmodium falciparum, exhibits genetic plasticity such that it increasingly develops resistance to current antimalarial drugs, especially in Southeast Asia where multi-drug resistance (MDR) threatens the last line of antimalarial drugs (1, 2). This obstructs the effectiveness of most of the current antimalarial drugs including the quinolines, antifolates and artemisinins (3).
