Abstract:
This Master’s thesis concentrates on the investigation of the automotive third party logistics (3PL) industry in China. Therefore the overall aim of this thesis is the investigation of the Chinese 3PL environment with the focus on automotive industry. In order to clarify this aim, following four research objectives are set: 1)      Identify barriers and conditions of the 3PL market, taking automotive market as an example market for 3PL services. 2)      Identify market specific logistics services and compare different logistics services providers in this environment. 3)      Assess the Chinese industrial structures and their impact on foreign enterprises and create an actual picture of the automotive industry. 4)      Detect industrial structures’ influences on logistics services competition. Such a research is important as existing research focused on these objectives is extremely rare or not present. The research objectives are solved by a multi-method approach. In wide areas this thesis is a descriptive study. Thus barriers and conditions of the 3PL market, taking automotive market as an example market for 3PL services, are identified in an extensive literature review and combined with findings from interviews. These interviews are performed in a case company which is active in the Chinese automotive 3PL market. Many important characteristics and circumstances which can mainly be seen as barriers for logistics business are identified in the areas of Infrastructure and equipment, Supply and demand of logistics services, Importance of relationships, Legal issues and Staff requirements. Market specific logistics services are also identified in a literature review. In a next step these services are used to compare seven relevant 3PL providers in the industry by doing a questionnaire survey. The research shows that services mentioned in literature present in the industry. No significant differences between different competitors can be found. Thus none of these companies shows a competitive advantage due to their service portfolios. Industrial structures for both industries automotive manufacturing and automotive 3PL are assessed by combining findings from literature and from empirical internet research. Thus industrial structures in China are ruins of earlier years in China’s history. State-owned enterprises play an important role in China’s automotive manufacturing industry. These companies are involved in the overwhelming share of the passenger car production. An interesting finding is that most passenger cars arise from joint ventures between these Chinese car groups and foreign car manufacturers. The Chinese car groups and the joint ventures create a network like structure in the industry. 3PL providers appear differently. Major companies identified are wholly-owned foreign companies, joint-ventures between Chinese car groups and foreign logistics providers or subsidiaries of car groups. Affiliations between logistics joint ventures and Chinese car groups indicate that competition might not be unrestrictedly present in the market.

Abstract:
In an effort to reduce waste in construction projects, hence promoting value creation, the focus on the construction logistics becomes increasingly important, especially with increasing complexity of the project. This is in order to coordinate and effectively plan the routines and deliveries that occur regularly at the construction site. In an effort of becoming more efficient regarding this matter and to reduce the amount of waste, procurement of a third party logistics company that conducts all necessary logistical activities has become more and more recognized. The purpose of the master thesis is to analyze the procurement of a third party logistics company (3PL) and how it has been handled during a project life cycle and how to optimize this type of solution as a partnership and as a benchmarking method. Finally client perception and satisfaction of the executed work is analyzed, all of which are summarized in the research questions stated below: • How has the collaboration with the procured third party logistics company (3PL) been conducted during the project life cycle? • How is it possible to develop and optimize the collaboration with a 3PL in order to achieve better results in the future as a partnership and a benchmarking method? • What is the client perception and satisfaction of the executed work by the third party logistics company? The theoretical chapter will serve as a foundation of the thesis where the relevant concepts are described complemented with a comparative case study of two projects with relevance to the stated questions. The case study consists of documents and interviews with key participants. The result will show a holistic profitability with additional suggestions to further develop this type of collaboration as a benchmarking method, what is the next reasonable step of further optimization regarding 3PL procurement and what generalizations can be made.

Abstract:
Since the business environment of today is characterized to be dynamic and service-driven, corporations are looking for solutions how to cut costs and still keep their competitive advantage in the market, and also how to decrease lead-time and flexibility. In this environment are 3PL-providers operating with an incentive to always please the customer. This study will investigate a 3PL-provider´s information sharing with its customer and how value can be extracted from this type of sharing. The purpose of this thesis is to understand and investigate the value of information sharing between the 3PL-provider and its customer. Two research questions have been dictated; R1: How do the respondents at the 3PL-provider perceive the relationship with their customer? R2: How are information requirements met? For the frame of reference have theories in the area of third-party logistics, information, relation, and value been studied. The carrying out of the study has been performed with a bounded ethnography approach since this study has essences from both the scientific and ethnographic approaches. The research reasoning is mainly inductive but with deductive elements. The research strategy is of qualitative character, where the data collection has been carried out through interviews/discussions within multiple case studies. There were several interviews launched within the target 3PL-relationships. The analysis of the empirical findings has been done through the existing theories in the frame of reference. The investigation showed that improvements of the information requirements and utilization of the communication methods improves the quality of the information sharing, and the conclusion drawn is that the information requirements and communication methods are big contributors for the information sharing as a whole. Since the information sharing is considered a big contributor to the customer value one can use the customer value as reference for how to value the information sharing. A main conclusion is therefore that the value of information sharing is dependent on its contribution for the customer value.

Abstract:
Problem The use of e-commerce has become increasingly popular, largely due to its benefits help firms to improve the competitiveness and the integration. However, not all of the firms using e-commerce are successful. Many new promising e-commerce com-panies are now struggling with economic survival, even have failed, often due to ne-glecting the role of logistics. This is because using e-commerce requires them to review and design a new logistical approach in order to deal with the customers’ demands. To build entirely new logistical functions for e-commerce, it seems to be difficult since not all of firms have an ability to solve this matter. Using 3PL services, thus, seems to be the best option for e-commerce. It leads to the need of 3PL firms to change the services in order to adapt to e-commerce. But the previous studies have not paid much attention on this issue, so it should be explored. Purpose The purpose of this thesis is to investigate services and adaption of 3PL pro-vider to e-commerce customers. It consists of two parts. Firstly, we investigate the typi-cal services provided for e-commerce customers from 3PL providers and how these dif-fer to regular customers. Secondly, how 3PL providers adapt to the presence of e-commerce customers will be clarified. Method This thesis employs an exploratory study with a mixed method. Data are col-lected through survey questionnaires and semi-structured interviews by phone with sev-en 3PL firms in Sweden. The findings then have been analyzed by using the theoretical framework. Conclusion Firstly, we conclude that the services 3PL providers typically offer for e-commerce customers are warehousing, packaging, transportation, labeling, product re-turn and inventory management. The 3PL providers have made some changes in their services in order to adapt to e-commerce customers. For example, different 3PL provid-ers have different distribution channels to serve e-commerce customers. Secondly, our findings support the conclusion that there are five specific challenges 3PL providers face with e-commerce customers. These challenges are product return handling, fore-casting, warehousing, distribution, and integrated IT system. Finally, the degree of ad-aptation of 3PL providers to e-commerce customers is dependent on the current type of 3PL providers for regular customers.

Abstract:
Purpose: Corporations today see a greater responsibility towards society regarding the environmental impact of their actions, using available transportation options that are more eco-friendly can reduce this impact significantly. Martinsen and Björklund (2012) identifies a set of gaps between supply and demand of green logistics services. This paper aims to address what it is that affects the demand for these alternative solutions and what could be done to increase the usage of them, thereby decreasing this gap. Design/methodology/approach: A quantitative study with six Logistics Service Providers (LSP) and 24 companies that purchase transportation services, all operating in Sweden. Data is collected through semi-structured telephone interviews with people responsible for the purchasing of transports as well as key account managers within the service providing companies. Findings: Just as the LSP’s interviewed in this paper thought, the main focus of the transport buying companies are the costs. Therefore paying extra only to benefit the environment and not the economy of the company is not something a lot of companies are prepared to do at this time. However there are solutions such as intermodality which are highly demanded, these are often both cost effective and more environmentally friendly, the problem as many companies see it, is that the rail network needs to expand to be able to cover bigger areas and increase the capacity. Research limitations/implications: The research paper focuses on companies operating on the Swedish market, for that reason findings cannot be generalized to other countries and sectors. Practical implications: Findings can be used by LSP’s and political decision making parties to get a better understanding of the demand for this type of services and what is perceived as important by the customers. Originality/value: There is a lack of earlier studies that mainly focus on the demand of more environmentally friendly transport services. Therefore a study of this kind is important to create an understanding and thereby improve the overall situation on the market in terms of environmental sustainability.

This work aimed to analyze the bottlenecks identified in the storage process of a 3PL (third-party logistics), a logistics multinational operator, for a large chemical industry. The research was a qualitative using a single case study at Kuehne + Nagel. The evidence sources used were interviews with Kuehne + Nagel members and the chemical industry, document analysis and direct observation in the warehouse. According to the analysis, it was found that there are opportunities for improvement both sides. The results obtained by analyzing the operation storage at Kuehne + Nagel identified problems related to the allocation of materials at bins (as the dimensions, weights and movement of the items), address no automated, material separation area (picking) unidentified , speed in the delivery of applications for separation and subsequent shipment, industrial handling equipment in insufficient quantities, internal accessibility to operations procedures and automation of internal storage operations. These process differences served to guide immediate and future operational activities in the organization, aiming to improve the level of service. At the end of the study is proposed, based on the opportunities identified improvements and bottlenecks, the 5W2H listing the actions to be taken. After these actions are prioritized through a GUT Matrix (Gravity, Urgency and Trend).

Abstract:
This thesis proposes a model for selecting between insourcing logistics for local distribution and outsourcing these functions to a third-party logistics (3PL) company. Supply chain optimization, as well as global supply chain management, are topics that are now well-covered; local distribution, despite its integral function in an organization, is much less researched. Models exist for network design and optimization, but the practical application of these network models may call for decisions and considerations that are not covered in these optimization models. A breakeven analysis selection model between using in-house logistic system and 3PL is derived, considering various regional parameters. The model is subsequently tested with sample parameters. Using this system as a basis, the thesis then moves on to analyze the potential of employing in-house logistics where, based on client density, outsourcing to 3PL is initially thought to be more cost-efficient. The proposed model can be used for the evaluation and selection of logistics systems. In addition, the model can be used for decision making regarding inventory decentralization.

Abstract:
During the past five year online retailers have started to outsource their warehouse and logistics to third-party logistic providers. Online retailers’ reason for outsourcing are the possibility to develop a tailored solution, with regards to their businesses’ needs, as well as doing it together with a partner whom is an expert on warehouse management and logistics. However, outsourcing is a problematic and major decision for online retailers to make. Especially since they do not necessarily know how to specify their needs and select the best possible solution for their businesses. Additionally, online retailers find it challenging to incorporate third-party logistic providers and use their abilities and expertise optimally. Online retailers’ demand for tailored solutions stresses third-party logistic providers’ operations since they have to adapt their offering to multiple customers, which requires flexibility, resources, and knowledge. In addition, third-party logistic providers are accustomed to traditional industries. Therefore, they lack understanding of online retailers’ preferences and does not know how to create value in the process from an initial contact to an ongoing relationship.   In summary, there are huge demands on third-party logistic providers that have chosen to focus on online retailers. Therefore, the authors of this thesis have decided to investigate the process. More specifically the purpose of this thesis is to investigate by which activities third-party logistic providers can effectively increase online retailers perceived value in the sales process’ phases.   In order to achieve the purpose of this thesis the authors have applied theory of value, value-creation, and sales processes to design a model of analysis and develop the main study. With respect to the model of analysis a workshop was used, where online retailers got to place cards (representing benefits) in a sales process with five phases (representing the relation between online retailers and third-party logistic providers) to give the authors a basis for analysis. The online retailers had to select if they perceived a benefit to be of importance during different phases. Thereafter, each phase was analysed to pair benefits with activities that was found in theory about sales processes. By adjusting each activity with respect to data from the main study, each analysis resulted in activities that can be performed by third-party logistic providers in order to increase online retailers perceived value. Conclusions from the assays were then used to build a framework, structuring how third-party logistic providers should focus its resources and organize its activities in the phases of the sales process. Along with the authors’ recommendations the framework provides a structure for third-party logistics providers to be used in order to increase online retailers perceived value.

Abstract:
In recent decades the logistics activity has received strategic status as an important factor for gaining competitive advantages for businesses. Thus companies have been investing significantly in the development of agile logistics systems and efficient coordination of the supply chains, in which they operate. However, to avoid losing competitiveness and really add value to their business, many of these companies are increasingly focusing on their core business and thus transferring to others some or all of their logistics activities as a way to reduce costs and increase efficiency of their operation. This work addresses the problem of decision-making on outsourcing of logistics activities and how to facilitate the selection of a Third-Party Logistics (3PL). For this, it was developed and proposed a system to support the analysis and selection of a 3PL that combines general concepts of project management and multicriteria analysis to base the choice of the 3PL that better fits the current needs. In particular, we used the AHP - Analytic Hierarchy Process - which could handle qualitative and quantitative aspects, since it has been applied to many decision-making problems in different segments. As a way of validating the proposed methodology, it was partially applied to a manufacturer of diesel engines with a strong bias in its supply chain logistics, which was in process of outsourcing part of their logistics activities. As the most important results, it was found that this methodology adhered to the business environment, supporting the analysis and understanding of the opportunities and risks for the outsourcing of logistics activities, as well as important attributes to be considered in the selection process and choice of a 3PL that is more appropriate to the reality of the contracting company. In addition, it showed that the price is not the most important factor for this decision.

Abstract:

In this thesis the Third-Party Logistics (3PL) partnership between the Japanese trading company Gadelius and the European logistics provider Mahé is investigated. This was done as a case study, mainly taking place on location at Gadelius’ headquarter in Tokyo.

The purpose has been to identify and evaluate the fulfilment of initial objectives, both with respect to agreed on terms and expectations of each party, analyze the reasons behind result and provide recommendations for the future.

In terms of what is strictly defined and agreed on in the contract the partnership is principally fulfilled, but this setup is not good in terms of how full 3PL-effects could be achieved.

The not so strictly defined parts of the contract stating that Mahé should work proactively are however not fulfilled to the same degree. This is connected to the lack of a dedicated Mahé representative being integrated into the OtD-team at Gadelius.

Because of this Gadelius’, to begin with very high, expectations on effects have become unrealistic, which has contributed to bad sentiments against Mahé and their capabilities. This has further been enhanced by Key Performance Indicators that don’t fully match the essential objectives with the partnership.

To change the situation two possible ways for the future are presented. If Gadelius’ focus is on indirect cost reductions an expanded partnership should be chosen, while a focus on direct cost reductions and a need for an easier change implementation call for a more limited partnership. For both alternatives new ways for measuring performance are suggested.

Jum'a, Luay. "Analysis of Logistics Service Quality (LSQ) factors among Net Promoter Score (NPS) segments for third party logistics (3PL) industry in Jordan : development of LSQ evaluation framework & improvement matrix." Thesis, Brunel University, 2016. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.707769.

Full text
Abstract:
Logistics Service Quality (LSQ) is considered one of the most important tools contributing to customer satisfaction which explains the concern of Third Party Logistics service providers (3PLs) in analysing, measuring and improving their LSQ. The limited research performed investigating LSQ and customer satisfaction relationships with adequate segmentation considerations, as well as the limited managerial tools developed to improve LSQ factors in a business-to-business (B2B) context are the main motivations for this study. Therefore, the aim of the study is focused on investigating the LSQ factors that are of most importance to different types of B2B customers, which will be segmented through Net Promoter Score (NPS) latent variable. In addition to this, this work seeks to develop a tool that provides guidance for LSQ improvements in the context of 3PL industry in Jordan. This study utilised systematic literature review (SLR) process in order to identify existing published work; this was achieved through searches in 14 well-known online databases. As a result, a comprehensive LSQ evaluation framework comprising 14 LSQ factors was developed by combining all LSQ factors from previous works. Quantitative analyses were conducted based on questionnaires’ data collected from 293 B2B customers of 3PLs in Jordan. The findings of the study showed that LSQ of 3PL companies in Jordan is at a satisfactory level and supported the significance of the 14 LSQ factors in achieving B2B customer satisfaction. Further, an equation has been developed to predict B2B customer satisfaction based on LSQ factors. In addition, a significant difference in the declared and inferred LSQ importance has been found amongst NPS segments (promoters, passives and detractors) in Jordan and consequently an LSQ improvement matrix has been developed for each segment. Although the study has some limitations of being completed in one country, using crosssectional time horizon and a single key informant for data collection but it contributes to the existing body of knowledge by enhancing current understanding of LSQ factors that lead to B2B customer satisfaction and identifying priorities of LSQ factors to different segments in the 3PL industry. Further, it provides methodological contributions in the use of SLR and post-hoc segmentation. Finally, its managerial implications are useful to practitioners in the 3PL industry since the study developed a comprehensive LSQ evaluation framework and an LSQ improvement tool that can be used by 3PLs in Jordan or any other country which add value to this study.

Ertushi, Kamiran, and Björn Norell. "Att etablera ett tredjepartslogistikföretag i Kina." Thesis, University of Gävle, Faculty of Engineering and Sustainable Development, 2010. http://urn.kb.se/resolve?urn=urn:nbn:se:hig:diva-7159.

Full text
Abstract:

The purpose of this examination thesis is from a Supply Chain Management perspective to examine the conditions for establishing a third party logistics company from the European Union in a growing industrial area in China. The thesis focuses on Xiaohe district in Guiyang.

Logistics industry is one of the fastest growing industries in China. The Chinese Government is proposing a promotion policy for a logistics expansion that includes tax reductions and reduced prices on rent and land prices for logistics companies. The main difference between the European Union market and the market in China is the cultural differences in the way of doing business and to socialize. Corruption may occur in China and it is worth to examine Chinese firms before cooperation can be settled. If collaboration is carried out, it may be advantageous to find out if there are specific rules in China to reduce the risk that problems occurs with the goods to be exported and/or to be imported. A product to be imported or exported between the European Union and China must clear customs.

When it comes to growing industrial areas as in Guiyang there are geographical advantages with thought of trading, that the city is adjacent to several other provinces and that it is regarded as a tie point in southwestern China. The main industry involved in the city includes coal, iron, steel, aluminum, fertilizers and manufacturing. Local Chinese logistics companies have lack of the experience and skills that is needed for providing logistics solutions to companies in the industrial park in Xiaohe District in Guiyang. Furthermore, there are no third-party logistics providers in the city. Partly for this reason, it is a great advantage for a third party logistics provider from the European Union who wants to establish business in Guiyang. The weaknesses for establishing include lack of infrastructure and long distance to the closest seaport. Furthermore, there is a plan for development in the region which includes the development of transport infrastructure.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Purpose – The purpose of this study is To investigate performance targets within a 3PLcompany and the effect they have on financial and social sustainability. To fulfil the purpose of the study two research questions has been conducted: How does a 3PL-company use performance targets to increase the company’s financial value? How are the employees affected by the present performance targets? Method – To fulfil the purpose of the study a case study has been conducted at a 3PL-company were performance targets to measure individual performance is used. Two methods to collect empirical data were used. These two were interviews and observations. In addition to these two methods, a literature study were conducted. Findings – The study resulted in that the performance targets affected both the companies economic and social sustainability. The performance targets are used to negotiate a sustainable contract with the clients and to contribute with growth to the company and this affects the employees both positive and negative. Implications – The study has contributed to highlight the knowledge gaps that were identified which are that performance targets on an individual level is rather unexplored and also that RBV has not been used in warehouse environment before. The study also contributes to how performance targets affect the employees in a 3PL-company. Limitations – The study that were conducted was a single case study and are therefore not as generalizable as a multiple case study. The interviewees had previous experience from warehouse organizations and therefore did not notice any affects from the performance targets. The study would have been strengthened by having interviewees who does not have previous experience from warehouse organizations who could have a different view on performance targets.

Abstract:
Pallets play a very important role in whole distribution systems through the supply chain. Such a fact alone shows the importance of pallets in today’s fast growing global logistics. Due to the increasing number of regulations and policies regarding natural resource conservations and also sustainable development, the issue of pallet utilization, reuse and recycling matters became the core concern in most of the researches performed in this field. As a consequence, the presented report discusses the current problems, requirements and debates around pallets utilization in distribution systems in depth along with the other affecting factors such as Cost, Environment, Materials, Sustainability, Information Technology and so forth. To achieve such goals, the first step is recognizing the mass Industrial production factors and global market requirements for the current and future of pallet utilization in order to achieve the desired efficiency and effectiveness in practice with focus on standardized pallets utilization in specific regions like European Union. The second step is the considering of various pallet types compatibility in different environments with respect to unit load assignments both at present and future. The third step is to challenge the obtained data and observed results and also, to verify them according to the foreseen future requirements, tendencies and demands of pallets and unit loads assignments through the international logistics providers. The last step which is as well the most important part of this thesis report is, to put the information together in order to clarify and specify the encountered difficulties regarding usage of pallets with concentration on cost, environment and ergonomic issues.

Abstract:
Background: Many processes play a critical role in making non-manufacturing operations work as optimal as possible. One of these processes that is an important part of these activities is the goods flow process. If this process does not function effectively, this can affect the entire business, which in turn will lead to huge costs and lead times. It is therefore important that the flow of goods in the terminal works well because customers nowadays require that goods that they place an order have to be delivered as soon as possible. Purpose: The aim of the study is to find solutions for streamlining flow of incoming and outgoing goods, which will reduce unnecessary transport distances between goods reception and delivery ports, as well as finding a solution for lack of surface. Methodology: All necessary information has been collected by using qualitative and quantitative data and with the help of various types of interviews: semi-structured and unstructured, as well as participating in observations to initiate process mapping and find new terminal design. Subsequently, cost savings were achieved by comparing the new and old terminal design, after that calculations were performed to see how much surface use was made more efficient with movement of LKM stock. Conclusion: By analyzing incoming goods flow and changing port usage in the terminal, in other words by increasing the number of ports for a department and by distributing goods flow between ports in an optimal manner, goods flow efficiency can be achieved. Non-manufacturing operations work can improve its productivity by optimizing floor space usage and eliminating waste and defects which effect goods handling.

Abstract:

With the changes in the business environment, there has been an increasing dependence on the skills of companies to deliver customer adapted products quickly and on time around the world. Therefore, instead of being caught in the high cost and unsatisfactory result of managing logistics operation by themselves, many companies have chosen to outsource some or all of their logistics and supply chain activities to specialist third party logistics companies (TPL). Hence, the TPL companies are managing and integrating their customers’ supply chains to increase the competitiveness and profitability.  It is argued, that knowledge is becoming the only resource capable of offering competitive advantage and continued growth and prosperity for supply chain partners. Therefore, the effective transfer and creation of knowledge has become a top priority in a supply chain. Since third party logistics companies have taken on the major responsibility of managing customers’ supply chains, effective knowledge management has become a top priority for them as well.

The purpose of this thesis is to describe the knowledge transfer and creation processes within the third party logistics dyadic relationships in the context of supply chain integration.

The thesis has been carried out by using inductive and conductive research approaches and the qualitative study has been carried out by applying multiple case studies as a research strategy. The empirical material is gathered from four companies in two third party logistics relationships. Data was collected through several interviews conducted at the target companies and the findings have been analysed using the existing theory stated in the frame of reference.

The main conclusions from this study are that the buyer-seller context determines the way knowledge is transferred and created in the dyadic third party relationships, and the companies did not have any specific strategies or governance structures for managing knowledge although considered important. How the companies in the dyadic TPL relationships transfer and create knowledge changes with the evolvement of the relationship. Knowledge transfer must penetrate all companies and all organizational levels to increase a holistic and integrated understating of the whole supply chain to achieve value created. How TPL companies create and utilize knowledge internally vary due to company size and the practices used. In addition, the customer company using multiple TPL providers is able to transfer and create knowledge from all TPL relationships to increase the efficiency and effectiveness of its supply chain. Due to the buyer-seller characteristic, however, there are no or very little barriers for knowledge creation and transfer in a dyadic TPL relationship.

Abstract:

Third party logistics (TPL), the procurement of an integrated set of logistics services in a long-term relationship between a shipper (goods owner) and a service provider, is today a viable option for how companies carry out their logistics activities. Very little has been written on implementation or change issues in a TPL setting; these issues are identified as important, but not elaborated. There is however reason to believe that implementation of TPL arrangements, or rather establishment thereof, involves a complex change process involving substantial change for a wide range of actors in both the shipper’s and the provider’s organisation.

When comparing literature that deals with the TPL establishment process with a stream of research that is concerned with logistics change, it comes to light that there is a discrepancy between the theoretical and methodological foundations of the former works, and what is written in these pieces regarding the process. It is concluded that recommendations for how to manage the establishment process are given without being founded in a theory of process, or research designs capable of studying process. The theoretical underpinnings of TPL literature are founded in a view of change as a matter of conducting rational analysis and conceiving the strategically wisest decisions for the logistics system as a whole. Implementation is viewed as an unproblematic exercise of issuing directives to affected actors, asserting that all actors are rational, therefore rationally conceived decisions will be accepted and implemented accordingly.

Therefore the overarching purpose of this research is:

To explore the change process of third party logistics establishment

To fulfil this purpose the two streams of research mentioned above are combined. A meta-model of process consisting of the three interrelated dimensions content, context, and process forms the starting point for the study of process, but this is not sufficient for a study of change; a theory of change which is capable of capturing the mechanisms of the change process as it unfolds is also needed. Therefore the theory of change of the second stream of research mentioned above is adopted.

The theory of change encompasses three models of change, which are archetypical representations of the mechanisms underlying change processes according to different assumptions of what change is and how change comes about. These models are denoted the linear, the processual, and the circular. One important aspect of this theory of change is that the approach to change should be aligned with the extent oflearning requirements on the actors who are affected by or involved in the change. An actors perspective is therefore called for, and adopted in this thesis.

This thesis is the first step of a wider research effort concerned with studying the process of establishing TPL. Therefore, of the three dimensions of change, the contentdimension is excluded from study in this thesis. Governed by the meta-model of process, two research objectives are formulated:

To explore the context within which the TPL establishment process unfolds and describe the contextual dependence of this process

&

To describe the change process of TPL establishment in terms of the linear, processual, and circular models of change

The empirical investigation applied is a single-case retrospective study, in which the case is the establishment process between a Swedish company and an international TPL service provider. A total of fifteen actors have been interviewed; ten on the shipper side of the dyad, five on the provider side. Although the TPL establishment process is an interorganisational process, this thesis focuses on the intraorganisational process of the shipper, why the empirical material from the other side of the dyad is not used in this thesis, The interorganisational aspect, as well as the intraorganisational side within the provider’s organisation are nevertheless important, and will be included in future research.

The interviews were carried out in an unstructured manner, in which the interviewees were asked to retell the story from their own perspectives. Actors from varying positions, who were involved in the process, are included in the study; in the total sample all groups who were most affected or involved are represented. The interviews rendered ten stories of the studied process.

These stories were then analysed by means of a pattern-matching logic, in order to seek out the important contextual dependencies of the process, and to explore the mechanisms of the change process, as it evolved in context.

After having conducted this first step of the ongoing research effort, four main conclusions can be drawn:

- The TPL establishment process is context dependent.

- Not only rational mechanisms are at play in the process.

- It is important to acknowledge actors, not only systems.

- It is important to acknowledge the process, not only the decision.

Abstract:
Thesis (M. Eng. in Logistics)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Engineering Systems Division, 2004.
Includes bibliographical references (leaves 57-59).
Third party logistics companies in the US emerged in the 1980s and have been providing valuable service for companies willing to outsource logistics. Since then the industry has been growing substantially both in terms revenues and number of players. Nowadays 3PL market has a decent share in total transportation costs and established position in the transportation sector. Furthermore, analysts forecast a significant growth of the industry and an increase of its role in the supply chain management of companies. However, the industry is not enjoying adequate profits and margins are small. 3PL companies have difficulties differentiating among each other and have difficulties demonstrating value proposition to potential customers. At first glance, it signifies commoditization--a competitive environment in which differentiation is difficult, customer loyalty is low and competing offerings are virtually indistinguishable from customer perspective. The objective of this study is to explore whether third party logistics industry in the US is experiencing commoditization by studying current state of the industry, its competitive environment and dynamics. We investigate the principal drivers of commoditization dynamics in the industry, leverage points for influencing the dynamics, and possible strategic responses of 3PL companies. The methodology for the research is the System Dynamics, analysis of industry competitive forces using Porter's framework, analysis of profitability trend in a sample of fifteen logistics companies over period 1985-2003, and a review of current dynamics in the market. The study gives better understanding of the current competitive environment and suggests that the 3PL industry is experiencing
(cont.) commoditization. Third party logistics have been approaching commodity status, and transforming the logistics outsourcing value equation from high margins and vendor control into a classic buyers' market with competition driving down margins, adding features and services, and increasing buyer choice.

Abstract:
The number of Fourth-Party Logistics providers (4PLs) is growing. Researchers have expressed the importance of measuring the performance of a business, but still there are only a few customised performance measurement frameworks developed for logistic service providers. This Master Thesis addresses this issue by performing a multiple case study at two 4PLs that are operating in separate industries, one in reverse logistics and the other in the construction industry. Previous research agrees that performance measurement frameworks have to be comprehensive and at the same time provide the right information in an understandable way. The Balanced Scorecard and the EFQM Business Excellence Model address this issue with different approaches and have been used in further developments of new frameworks. The empirical study found that none of the studied businesses had a well-developed framework for their performance measurement and therefore the alignment between their measurements and their business strategy was affected. Performance measurement frameworks, which have a wide application, do not have a flaw that make them unsuitable to use for a 4PL. Managers in the researched businesses therefore see a need for frameworks that are easily implemented and are customised to their specific situation. Moreover, the study found that no alignment had been developed yet between the customer and the 4PL. The businesses strive to align their KPIs among the partners they are cooperating with, down the supply chain, but are not interested in communicating them to their customers. Offering their customers full transparency might affect the businesses’ processes. Research connected to performance measurement specified to 4PLs and Logistic Service Providers (LSPs) in general is needed since the currently available research leaves space for uncertainties and further discussion.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The market for third party logistics (TPL) service has expanded hugely over the past few years as its total revenue has reached $333 billion globally. It is expected that the industry will grow substantially, and became increasingly complex. As the industry matures, a number of authors have recognised that logistics service quality is becoming a vital tool for delivering superior logistics service performance and thus creating customer satisfaction. Concurrently, considerable evidence has been accumulated that shows relationship quality is useful in the marketing channel context in driving customer loyalty. However, empirical research investigating the effects of the relationships among logistics service quality, customer satisfaction, relationship quality and customer loyalty has received relatively little attention in the literature. This study attempts to fill this void by investigating customers' satisfaction with TPL providers' services across industrial sectors in the UK and the relationship quality they have with them. It empirically tests the validity of Mentzer et al's (2001) Logistics Service Quality PQ) scale for measuring logistics service quality and the LSQ process model that underpins it. A disaggregated model of relationship quality is also used to assess its impact on customer loyalty. Structural equation modelling analysis of the data collected by mail survey of 183 logistics-related managers confirms that LSQ measures are generalisable across industrial sectors in the UK. The results show that technical quality dimensions of logistics service do not drive customers' satisfaction, but serve as the order qualifiers while the functional quality dimensions act as order winning criteria that differentiates TPL providers' service excellence for customer satisfaction. It also supports existing theoretical studies that suggest that relationship quality produces loyal customers. The research contributes to both marketing and logistics discipline in that it empirically demonstrates the positive link between logistics service quality and customer satisfaction as well as customer satisfaction, relationship quality and customer loyalty.

Abstract:
In the last years, the franchise system, common in fast food chains, is gaining greater prominence in the global economy scenery, including Brazil. This business model, highly standardized, in addition to seek to expand its system geographically, needs to protect its greatest asset, the brand. Its organization and management create natural conflicts of interests and asymmetric information between franchiser and franchisee, coming from the collective exploration of the same asset and geographic dispersion. In this system is very important to stick to the core competencies. As a result, it is usual to hire a third party logistics (3PL) providers to coordinate and control the flow of information and goods, perceived as activities to support the business. This thesis proposes an information architecture capable of supporting operational processes in the 3PL in study and monitor their critical success factors.

In its attempt to sustain the growth expectations in an increasingly competitive market, Intel Corporation has invested in a number of new products and services, which differ significantly from its core semiconductor business. In 2000, Intel purchased 12 companies, amounting to an investment value of approximately 6 billion dollars. Associated with these various businesses ventures are new customers, new channels, different product attributes, uncertain demand profiles, and various service requirements, all of which have a direct impact on Intel's strategy for physical distribution. The existing logistics infrastructure is not equipped to optimally distribute the greater product mix and respond to the added complexities. The integration of third party logistics providers into its current distribution network may enhance Intel's ability to respond to the growing needs of the diversified product offerings. This thesis explores the decision to outsource logistics activities. It presents both the financial and non-financial, strategic and operational factors, which affect the decision. The decision framework presented is applied to the current business situation at Intel and an outsourcing strategy, which both addresses the current distribution challenges, and compliments the overall strategy of the corporation, is recommended. The description of the recommended distribution strategy is followed by a discussion of the complications associated with executing the strategy and guidelines for effective supplier management in a logistics context. The decision to outsource is just one of the decisions analyzed in the development of distribution strategies. Studying the strategies utilized by other organizations can enhance the competitiveness of a firm's logistics network. This paper also describes the methodology developed for exchanging logistics information with other companies, and based on the evidence from the specific study conducted by Intel's Planning and Logistics Group, discusses the critical success factors for future external studies.

Full text
Abstract:
The logistics industry is an imperative component of trade and a major contributor to economic growth in many countries. However, the logistics activities come along with severe negative environmental impact, particularly in freight transport which is considered the most important source of environmental hazards in a logistics system. Even though 3PLs have a key role in the logistics industry, only a limited number of studies have been conducted to analyze the greenness of their activities. Therefore, this study is done with the aim to examine the greenness of 3PLs in Hong Kong and to understand the key barriers that they face during green logistics implementation. This empirical research is conducted through case studies with eight 3PLs. An analytical framework which consists of eight green transport measures and nine influencing factors is developed to facilitate the research. The findings suggest that green logistics is evolving in the 3PL industry Hong Kong but it is still at a preliminary stage. It also shows that the number of green transport measures adopted by 3PLs in Hong Kong is lower as compared to the analyzed 3PLs’ headquarters in other countries. The study further reveals that 3PLs in Hong Kong tend to adopt those measures which directly bring cost benefits to the companies, such as, eco-driving, load factor optimization, route optimization and fleet management. Nevertheless, measures which require financial investment or trade-off of profit margin/operational efficiency, for example, fleet modernization and modal shift are not commonly adopted. Moreover, some of the green measures, such as, green fuel or vehicle are not adopted by the case companies simply because they are unavailable in Hong Kong. A number of practical barriers are derived from the case analyses. They are considered the main causes of slowing down green logistics development in the 3PL industry in Hong Kong. While different stakeholders play a role in overcoming the hurdles of the green logistics development, the Government is found to be the most influencing one as it can influence external as well as some of the internal barriers elicited by this study. Therefore, it should take a leading role in eliminating the barriers. At the same time, in order to comprehensively facilitate the progress of green logistics development, efforts and commitments from other stakeholders, i.e. 3PLs, industry associations and customers are required.

Abstract:
Outsourcing breaks up the supply chain and often increases in number of stakeholders and organizations and therefore puts a higher demand on a well-functioning coordination of the material supply. The logistical task spectrum is characterized by a great degree of variety and dissimilarity which is due to the logistical role itself, functions within both overall economic and business processes, in value-added steps from the processing of raw material to the end user. Research in the field of global sourcing environment has been conducted in prior research, however, the outsourcing environments differs one from another. The purpose of this study is to identify critical logistical factors when transferring to a third party stakeholder. The findings are based on an extensive literature study in the field of logistics and a single case study. An interactive investigation at a large, multinational company provided opportunities to observe and participate in an ongoing global transfer and verify the applicability of the result (matrix concept). The observations were done over a three months’ period and gave the author the opportunity to investigate the logistical setup for the ongoing transfer. The company henceforth Genopower AB, is transferring the assembly and testing to a third party stakeholder located in Indonesia. The motives for the transfer is to increase the company’s market shares in Indonesia and further into Asia. The third party stakeholder, henceforth PT PAK does not have any prior experience in the Gas turbine (Power generation) industry. The study provides a generalized matrix with critical logistical factors which affects the logistical performance measurements, logistical cost and customer service elements. By presenting the findings in terms of factors, the matrix can be applicable on future outsourcing projects and give a clear insight in which of the factors is worth investigating further; prior, during or after the actual transfer as an evaluation tool.

Abstract:
This thesis focuses on third party logistics providers in Sweden and their service offerings. The author examines, evaluate and discuss the range of third party logistics services provided by third party logistics companies in Sweden. Furthermore, the author categorized the third party logistics providers using some of proposed frameworks and theories for differentiating third party logistics providers from previous researchers. This was done to determine the relevant categories that the third party logistics providers in Sweden belongs to. Moreover, the author made a comparison of the competence of third party logistics providers in terms of the number of services they offer in Sweden. The author used the qualitative research approach as the thesis is more exploratory in nature. Basically, exploratory research is conducted to obtain greater understanding of a concept or to help clarify ambiguous problem. The author interview four (4) third party logistics providers in Sweden and other information such as the provider’s website information and annual reports was used in the analysis. It is interesting to note that, relationship between third party logistics providers and their customer is a major factor when classifying providers into different category. Some of the theories proposed by previous researcher on the classification of third party logistics provider have become obsolete due to the fact that the relationship between the third party logistics providers and their customers has evolve over the years from formal cooperation to strategic alliance and joint ownership. Some of the companies are less competent than others in terms of the services they offer in each of the third party logistics service categories. This does not necessarily make them weaker because the services they offer in each of the categories are being driven by the company’s business strategy to stay competitive in the third party logistics industry. Furthermore, although size and global status give some competitive advantages, adopting different strategies such as creating a niche market in a particular service or a particular industry will provide major competitive advantages to third party logistics providers.

Abstract:

The purpose of this thesis is to develop an integrated model which involves creative and analytical features for designing a cost effective logistics centre layout on operational level, with respect to time and space utilization. Engineering methods, creative skills, simulation and multi-criteria decision making methods were integreted in the  developed model. The model has been implemented and validated in Oskarshamn Intralog, which is a sister company of Scania. After applying the model in the case company, three different layout concepts were generated based on engineering and simulation techniques. These concepts were evaluated from utilization of space, time and flexibility aspects. Furthermore, multi criteria decision making method was used to select the most cost effective layout concept among these concepts. Different aspects helped to see various effects of warehouse operations on layout design. Simulation was used as a powerful tool to test cycle time within designed concepts. Clearly it was concluded that a combination of two concepts led to reach the expected results as an optimum point among space, time utilization and flexibility which fullfilled the answer to both academical and practical problem

Abstract:
Leaders of third-party logistics companies face a critical talent shortage because of the global deficiency of supply-chain professionals. The lack of trained supply-chain professionals negatively affects business and market performance. The purpose of this multiple case study was to explore the strategies used by third-party logistics hiring managers to recruit supply-chain talent to meet industry demands. The resource-based view theory was used as a lens for this study. Data were collected from 5 Pennsylvania third-party logistics hiring managers from interviews, organizational documents, and company websites. Member checking occurred after transcription and summarization of the interview data. Data analysis occurred using Yin's 5-step process of compiling, disassembling, reassembling, interpreting, and concluding data. Four themes emerged from the data: (a) strategies for recruitment resourcing, (b) strategies to address market drivers, (c) interview method strategies, and (d) strategies for determining skill requirements. The findings and recommendations resulting from this study might be valuable to senior management, human resource leaders, and hiring managers for creating strategic plans to address recruitment to alleviate supply-chain talent shortages. The implications for positive social change include the potential for business leaders to decrease unemployment, produce greater local economic stability, and improve the standard of living of community residents.

Abstract:
In today's business world, it is very difficult for companies not to have outside partners to assist in their activities. In the international transport sector, this trend has been increasing in recent years, such as logistics operators or third-party logistics (3PL). These companies have specific expertise in the area of international logistics and supply chain (SCM), bringing cost savings to customers and improving transportation efficiency. However, selecting a logistics operator is not a simple process and companies need to use methods to make this choice correct and find a 3PL that meets their needs. This dissertation proposes to identify how Portuguese wineries are selecting their logistics operator and which criteria are being used. Firstly, to identify the existing methods in the literature, 19 articles published between 2003 and 2018 on the methods of selection of 3PL were reviewed and, subsequently, semi-structured interviews were conducted in 19 wineries in Portugal. The conclusion of this work is the wineries use only the price quote to select the 3PL, and do not use any method found in the literature review. Already the criteria considered at the time of decision, are the price and delivery time.
