Abstract:
Political cinema, particularly third cinema of the 1960s and subsequently inspired films, often relies upon the formation and transformation of subjectivity. Such films depict a becoming-political of their characters, such as Ali LaPointe's transformation from bricklayer and boxer to revolutionary in Battle of Algiers (La battaglia di Algeri, Gillo Pontecorvo, 1966 ). As subjects are politicized, they reveal social, moral, existential, or ethical exigencies that drive the politics of the film. In this respect, most narrative-driven political cinema is biopolitical cinema, although its expression shifts from film to film, or from one period of time to another. Gilles Deleuze articulated such a shift in his two works on cinema, Cinema 1: The Movement-Image and Cinema 2: The Time-Image. Namely, he points to the breaking of the link between action and reaction that marks a shift from pre-World War II cinema to the postwar filmmaking environment. To update Deleuze's project on political cinema, this article posits another qualitative shift in political cinema stemming from the emergence of neoliberal economic policies and the growth of networked information systems from the 1990s to the present. This shift compromises earlier models of political cinema and results in a modern political cinema based on the fragmentation of political publics and the formation of new political exigencies. Two films set in Algeria will be used to document this shift in political modes, in a move towards the modern political cinema: Battle of Algiers and Outside the Law (Hors-la-loi, Rachid Bouchareb, 2010 ).

Abstract:
ABSTRACTWhereas Labov (1991) made a case for the existence of three major dialects of English, this article offers Canadian evience that runs counter to the idea of a relatively homogeneous North American third dialect area in which vowel systems remain fairly stable. It shows that the lax vowels of Canadian English are undergoing a substantial shift, the pivot for which is suggested to be vowel merger in theCot/Caughtsets. This shift is to some degree conditioned by the voicing properties and the manner of articulation of a following consonant; gender differences prove significant as well. The article also examines back vowel fronting in Candian English and its relationship to the shift affecting the front lax vowels, as well as to the general principles of vowel chain shifting articulated by Labov (1994). The Canadian Shift raises the issue of internal versus external motivation of vowel change; in addition, it brings, macrosociolinguistic evidence to bear on the purely microsociolinguistic interpretation of similar patterns of vowel shifting as symbols of local group identity (Eckert, 1991b).

Abstract:
The first goal of the research was to figure out translation methods and shifts applied in translating bilingual textbooks of History, Mathematics, and Physics, Those bilingual textbooks were published by Quadra, Yramawidia, and Yudhisthira, used for grade seven in Medan. The second was to figure out the impact of translation methods and shifts which dominant on translation quality. The third was to recommend better bilingual textbooks to use based on the translation quality point of view. The research used a descriptive qualitative research method with a questionnaire, depth-interview, and observation on a pair of translation to collect the data. The data were analyzed with interactively and non-interactively. Based on the data analysis, the research finds that (1) the dominant shift on History textbook is unit shift while the dominant method is a free translation, the dominant shift on Physics is a unit shift and dominant method is a communicative translation, the dominant shift on Mathematics is structure shift and dominant method is communicative translation. The second finding is that the impact of the dominant translation shift and method on the History textbook is negative. At the same time, in Mathematics and Physics are positive. Third, the research; the researcher recommends bilingual textbooks of Mathematics and Physics to use based on translation quality point of view. The well bilingual textbooks can improve students’ language skills, while low translation quality influences bad development to students on learning the language.

Abstract:
Purpose: To explore the differences in sleep parameters between nurses working a slow, forward rotating shift and those working a fixed day shift. Method: A longitudinal parallel-group comparison design was used in this prospective study. Participants (female) were randomly assigned to a rotating shift or a fixed day shift group. Participants in the rotating shift group worked day shift for the first 4 weeks, followed by evening shift for the second and night shift the third. Those in the day shift group worked day shift for all 12 weeks. Each kept a sleep diary and wore an actigraph (actigraph data were used to calculate total sleep time [TST], sleep onset latency [SOL], wake after sleep onset [WASO], and sleep efficiency [SE]) for 12 days, from Workday 1–4 in each of Weeks 4, 8, and 12. Results: TST in nurses working evening rotating shift was higher than that for those working the day or night rotating shift and fixed day shift. WASO was significantly longer on Day 2 for rotating shift participants working evening versus day shift. SOL and SE were significantly shorter and lower in rotating shift nurses working night versus both day and evening shifts. Conclusions: A comprehensive understanding of the sleep patterns and quality of nurses with different work shifts may lead to better management of work shifts that reduces the influence of shift work on sleep quality.

Abstract:
P104 Introduction: Several studies have shown the detrimental effect of fever on brain injury. Recently, the incidence and prognostic significance of fever after intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) was reported. The underlying cause of fever remains speculative. We present data on fever after ICH, volume of ICH, 3rd ventricular shift, and patient outcome. Methods: Data from 61 patients with ICH were collected prospectively from August 1999 to April 2000 including age, admission Glasgow Coma Scale (GCS) score, ICH volume, 3rd ventricular shift, maximum temperature (Tmax) and fever (T >38.5 °C) at 24, 48, 72 and 96 hours. Patients were screened for common causes of fever. Outcome was determined by mortality at discharge and National Institute of Health Stroke Scale (NIHSS), modified Rankin Scale (mRS), and Barthel Index (BI) at 3 months. Spearman correlation coefficient, Mann-Whitney test, and logistic regression were used to assess relationships. No adjustment was made to significance criterion for multiple comparisons over time. Results: The average age was 65 ± 16 years. The mean admission GCS score was 8.8 ± 4.8. The mean ICH volume was 48.9 ± 52.4 cc. The mean 3rd ventricular shift was 3.6 ± 4.5 mm. The mean Tmax was 38.0 ± 0.9°C. There was a correlation between ICH volume and Tmax at 24 hours (p= 0.04) and at 72 hours (p= 0.03) and fever at 24 hours (p=0.039) and at 72 hours (p=0.036). Tmax at 72 hours correlated with 3rd ventricular shift (p= 0.01). Patients with 3rd ventricular shift > 1 mm were more likely to have a fever within the first 72 hours (p= 0.049). Multivariate logistic regression analysis showed no confounding effects from intubation status, presence of infection (positive blood, sputum, or urine culture/urinalysis), abnormal chest x-ray, or DVT. Fever at 72 hours was associated with a higher mortality at discharge (p=0.046). Fever within 72 hours was associated with a trend of a worse NIHSS score (p=0.06) at 3 months but no worse outcome by BI or mRS score at 3 months. Conclusion: Fever after ICH correlates with 3rd ventricular shift and ICH volume. The underlying mechanism may be hypothalamic dysfunction. Fever may be associated with a worse outcome but more studies are needed.

Abstract:
Abstract. Magic-angle spinning is routinely used to average anisotropic interactions in solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR). Due to the fact that the homonuclear dipolar Hamiltonian of a strongly coupled spin system does not commute with itself at different time points during the rotation, second-order and higher-order terms lead to a residual dipolar line broadening in the observed resonances. Additional truncation of the residual broadening due to isotropic chemical-shift differences can be observed. We analyze the residual line broadening in coupled proton spin systems based on theoretical calculations of effective Hamiltonians up to third order using Floquet theory and compare these results to numerically obtained effective Hamiltonians in small spin systems. We show that at spinning frequencies beyond 75 kHz, second-order terms dominate the residual line width, leading to a 1/ωr dependence of the second moment which we use to characterize the line width. However, chemical-shift truncation leads to a partial ωr-2 dependence of the line width which looks as if third-order effective Hamiltonian terms are contributing significantly. At slower spinning frequencies, cross terms between the chemical shift and the dipolar coupling can contribute in third-order effective Hamiltonians. We show that second-order contributions not only broaden the line, but also lead to a shift of the center of gravity of the line. Experimental data reveal such spinning-frequency-dependent line shifts in proton spectra in model substances that can be explained by line shifts induced by the second-order dipolar Hamiltonian.

AbstractGiven a code from a shift space to an irreducible sofic shift, any two of the three conditions—open, constant-to-one and (right or left) closing—imply the third. If the range is not sofic, then the same result holds when bi-closingness replaces closingness. Properties of open mappings between shift spaces are investigated in detail. In particular, we show that a closing open (or constant-to-one) extension preserves the structure of a sofic shift.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the problem faced by a cleaning service company, which records and pays out a large amount ofovertime each month. With only one shift per day, the labor force is required to work overtime in order to satisfy the daily work demand The objective ofthis paper is to determine the optimum schedule to satisfy the labor requirements at a minimum cost. Tiberwala et al. s (1972) single-shift integer programming model for scheduling workers with two consecutive days offper week has been used as the starting point for this research. This paper modifies the model to incorporate two and three shift schedules with one day offper week. Three alternative workforce schedules are then comparedandevaluated. Thefirst alternative maintains the traditional one-shift schedule, currently being practiced by the company. The second and third alternatives switch to a two-shift schedule and three-shift schedule, respectively, with overlapping working hours linking the shifts. In comparison to the existing one-shift schedule, the three-shift schedule is expected toproduce savings 0/21.4 per cent equivalent to RM23,592 annually.

Abstract:
The generation of activity-evoked extracellular alkaline shifts has been linked to the presence of external Ca2+ or Ba2+. We further investigated this dependence using pH- and Ca2+-selective microelectrodes in the CA1 area of juvenile, rat hippocampal slices. In HEPES-buffered media, alkaline transients evoked by pressure ejection of RS-α-amino-3-hydroxy-5-methyl-4-isoxazolepropionic acid (AMPA) averaged ∼0.07 unit pH and were calculated to arise from the equivalent net addition of ∼1 mM strong base to the interstitial space. These alkaline responses were correlated with a mean decrease in [Ca2+]o of ∼300 μM. The alkalinizations were abolished reversibly in zero-Ca2+ media, becoming indiscernible at a [Ca2+]o of 117 ± 29 μM. Addition of as little as 30–50 μM Ba2+ caused the reappearance of an alkaline response. In approximately one-fourth of slices, a persistent alkaline shift of ∼0.03 unit pH was observed in zero-Ca2+ saline containing EGTA. In HEPES media, addition of 300 μM Cd2+, 100 μM Ni2+, or 100 μM nimodipine inhibited the alkaline shifts by roughly one-half, one-third, and one-third, respectively, whereas Cd+ and Ni2+ in combination fully blocked the response. In bicarbonate media, by contrast, Cd+ and Ni2+blocked only two-thirds of the response. In the presence of bicarbonate, Ni2+ caused an unexpected enhancement of the alkalinization by ∼150%. However, when the extracellular carbonic anhydrase was blocked by benzolamide, addition of Ni2+reduced the alkaline shift. These results suggested that Ni2+ partially inhibited the interstitial carbonic anhydrase and thereby increased the alkaline responses. These data indicate that an activity-dependent alkaline shift is largely dependent on the entry of Ca2+ or Ba2+ via voltage-gated calcium channels. However, sizable alkaline transients still can be generated with little or no external presence of these ions. Implications for the mechanism of the activity-dependent alkaline shift are discussed.

Abstract:
Biome conservatism is often regarded as common in diversifying lineages, based on the detection of low biome shift rates or high phylogenetic signal. However, many studies testing biome conservatism utilise a single-biome-per-species approach, which may influence the detection of biome conservatism. Meta-analyses show that biome shift rates are significantly lower (less than a tenth), when single biome occupancy approaches are adopted. Using New Zealand plant lineages, estimated biome shifts were also significantly lower (14–67% fewer biome shifts) when analysed under the assumption of a single biome per species. Although a single biome approach consistently resulted in lower biome shifts, it detected fewer instances of biome conservatism. A third of clades (3 out of 9) changed status in biome conservatism tests between single and multiple biome occupancy approaches, with more instances of significant biome conservatism when using a multiple biome occupancy approach. A single biome approach may change the likelihood of finding biome conservatism because it assumes biome specialisation within species, falsely recognises some biome shift types and fails to include other biome shift types. Our results indicate that the degree of biome fidelity assumed has a strong influence on analyses assessing biome shift rates, and biome conservatism testing. We advocate analyses that allow species to occupy multiple biomes.

In an acceptability judgement task, a developmental change occurred in the preference for hura (Experiment 1): 6–7-year-olds showed a preference for the null pronoun in both topic-shift and topic-continuity contexts, while 8–10-year-olds, like adults, preferred hura in topic-shift contexts and null pronouns in topic-continuity contexts. However, no developmental shift was observed in the preference for bera (Experiment 2): unlike adults, neither 6–7 nor 8–10-year-old children selected bera over null pronouns in topic-shift contexts. They instead showed a general preference for null pronouns, an indication of tolerance for ambiguity – a pattern which differs from prior studies in other null-subject languages, where ambiguous pronouns declined with age. The results reveal a different developmental pattern for hura and bera, which may be explained by the more rigid (syntactic) constraints operating on hura in comparison to bera in antecedent choice.

Abstract:
This paper analyzes the problem faced by a cleaning service company, which records and pays out a large amount of overtime each month. With only one shift per day, the labor force is required to work overtime in order to satisfy the daily work demand The objective of this paper is to determine the optimum schedule to satisfy the labor requirements at a minimum cost. Tiberwala et al. s (1972) single-shift integer programming model for scheduling workers with two consecutive days off per week has been used as the starting point for this research. This paper modifies the model to incorporate two and three shift schedules with one day off per week. Three alternative workforce schedules are then compared and evaluated. The first alternative maintains the traditional one-shift schedule, currently being practiced by the company. The second and third alternatives switch to a two-shift schedule and three-shift schedule, respectively, with overlapping working hours linking the shifts. In comparison to the existing one-shift schedule, the three-shift schedule is expected to produce savings of 21.4 per cent equivalent to RM 23,592 annually.

Abstract:
Although numerous investigations have probed the status of the vestibuloocular (VOR) during gaze shifts, its exact status remains strangely elusive. The goal of the present study was to precisely evaluate the dynamics of VOR suppression immediately before, throughout, and just after gaze shifts. A torque motor was used to apply rapid (100°/s), short-duration (20–30 ms) horizontal head perturbations in three Rhesus monkeys. The status of the VOR elicited by this transient head perturbation was first compared during 15, 40, and 60° gaze shifts. The level of VOR suppression just after gaze-shift onset (40 ms) increased with gaze-shift amplitude in two monkeys, approaching values of 80 and 35%. In contrast, in the third monkey, the VOR was not significantly attenuated for all gaze-shift amplitudes. The time course of VOR attenuation was then studied in greater detail for all three monkeys by imposing the same short-duration head perturbations 40, 100, and 150 ms after the onset of 60° gaze shifts. Overall we found a consistent trend, in which VOR suppression was maximal early in the gaze shift and progressively recovered to reach normal values near gaze-shift end. However, the high variability across subjects prevented establishing a unifying description of the absolute level and time course of VOR suppression during gaze shifts. We propose that differences in behavioral strategies may account, at least in part, for these differences between subjects.

Abstract:
Expressions for the first- and third-order dispersion relations have been derived for circularly polarised waves in a magnetised relativistic plasma containing electron streams. From the first-order dispersion relations it is seen that the waves are split into three parts, one of which is reflected causing the formation of standing waves in the streaming plasma. From the third-order dispersion relations, the expression for the shifts of wave number has been obtained. It is observed that the streaming of electrons has a significant contribution to the wave-number shift of the electromagnetic waves.

Abstract:
This is an analytical study of the effect of level-shift and temporary-change components, when present but neglected, on the trace test for cointegration. The contribution is threefold. First, we discuss in a multivariate framework, and jointly, effects that in the previous literature have been discussed in a univariate setting and in isolation. Second, we consider a rather general specification of shifts and outliers with random size, number, and timing and with flexible dynamics. It nests the classical cases of additive shifts, innovational outliers, and additive outliers. Third, as an instrument for this analysis we develop an asymptotic theory for product moment matrices of linear processes with stochastic level-shift components, generalizing results of Leipus and Viano (2003, Statistics and Probability Letters 61, 177–190).

Abstract:
Traditional dialect boundaries in the United States have received renewed attention (Labov, 1991, 1994). Labov outlined three dialects of English (the Northern Cities Chain Shift, the Southern Chain Shift, and the Third Dialect), the boundaries of which are defined by chain shifts in the vowel system and roughly correspond to traditional dialectal boundaries defined through the bundling of lexical items (Kurath, 1949) and phonological isoglosses (Kurath & McDavid, 1961). Other research has suggested that the Third Dialect may be the most heterogeneous of these dialects, with speakers in different areas displaying widely disparate behaviors (see, e.g., Clarke, Elms, & Youssef, 1995; Di Paolo, 1988; Di Paolo & Faber, 1990; Labov, 1996; Moonwomon, 1987). The present article contributes towards a richer picture of the Third Dialect by offering the first systematic variationist analysis of speech in Pittsburgh, with a particular focus on three phonological processes: vocalization of /l/, laxing of /i/ before /l/, and laxing of /u/ before /l/. I argue that Veatch's (1991) model of English syllable structure provides a unified account of these seemingly unrelated phonological changes in Pittsburgh; the implications of this argument for further research on Pittsburgh speech are also noted.

Abstract:
Numerous Bantu languages have processes of rightward shift or spread of H tone. Sometimes the process is quite simple: every H shifts once to the right (as in Cijita) or spreads once to the right (as in Kikerewe). The tonal system of Taita is more complex in that both shifting and spreading are found in the language. Furthermore, the extent of tone shift or spread is not just one syllable; sometimes, H tone can shift or spread by two syllables. An analysis of the tonal system of the Dembwa dialect of Taita is given here. It is argued that the facts of the language are best described in terms of two rules of rightward spreading and a third rule of tone delinking. The argument for analyzing the tone system in terms of three interacting rules rather than one unified rightward movement process resides in the fact that the environments for the three processes only overlap partially. On the theoretical front, these results support a general decomposition of the process of tone shift into tone spread interacting with tonal delinking, rather than including the operation of shift in the formal repertoire of primitive phonological operations.

Abstract:
Museum MACAN is the first museum that exhibit modern art. Museum MACAN has Indonesia-English caption in their Instagram account in order to promote their collection. This study investigates translation shift occurs in Museum MACAN’s Instagram caption and the accuracy of their translation. The translation shift is used to produces accurate translation. This study uses Catford’s theory about translation shift (1964) and the accuracy based on ATA Rubric Assessment. The data were twenty five Museum MACAN’s Instagram captions. The collected data were analysed, in order to fine the translation shift and accuracy of their caption. There are three evaluators to rate the accuracy of the captions. The first evaluator is the writer of this study; the second evaluator is a student of management from Universitas Negeri Jakarta who works as freelance translator more than two years, the third evaluator is a professional translator who has been in translation field for twenty five years. The result of the translation shift analysis is there are five shifts occur in Museum MACAN’s Instagram captions. The most used shift is structure shift. It shows that the use of shift helps writer or translator adjusts word into appropriate sentence from source text to target text.

Abstract:
A cross-sectional, online survey was conducted in June 2020 to understand the perceptions of those who work from home (WFH). A questionnaire using Google Forms was sent across to employees of different age groups, job sectors and of various places. Queries included comfort, stress, change in work and family hours, online meetings, disrupting, most convenient and irritating factors of WFH, feeling of social isolation and missing of work-team activities. Of 72 respondents, 79% were men, 60% were above 40 years and two-thirds were in supervisory role. One in two are comfortable and relaxed with WFH. More than 60% reported increase in work hours. Family time has increased to all those who had working hours reduced. No-travel was the most convenient factor for one-third, while ‘increased work hours’ was the most irritating factor for 35%. Lack of proper infrastructure, privacy, family responsibilities and mindset were the main disruptions. Comfort-Stress factors did not vary significantly with age, gender, number of children and job level. Change in work hours, change in family time, infrastructure, privacy, balance between work-home responsibilities in addition to missing team activities, social isolation were the factors of significance for comfort and stress. Given proper infrastructure, more privacy and regulated working hours, WFH can be more comfortable and stress-free. A study with larger sample size would provide comparable data across factors. Conducting organizational level surveys across its employees in WFH could reveal more insights to help decide on cost cutting, output quality and revised compensation structures.
