Abstract:
AbstractThe Pudu Mandapa (‘New Hall’) in Madurai is one of the best-known monuments from the Nayaka period of Tamilnadu (c. 1550–1700). It was built around 1630 under the patronage of Tirumala Nayaka as a major addition to the Minaksi-Sundaresvara temple complex that dominates the centre of this major Tamil town and Hindu pilgrimage centre. The Pudu Mandapa is well known in the West from the aquatint produced by Thomas and William Daniell, but this is only one of numerous other illustrations by Western and Indian artists in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth century of this single Tamil temple structure. A discussion of the Pudu Mandapa as an example of a major architectural type, the festival mandapa, is followed by an examination of the structure's architectural sculpture. The final section discusses the Royal Asiatic Society's collection of drawings of this mandapa and the European documentation of the south Indian temple more generally.

Abstract:
We have expressed in neuroendocrine PC12 cells the polymeric immunoglobulin receptor (pIgR), which is normally targeted from the basolateral to the apical surface of epithelial cells. In the presence of nerve growth factor, PC12 cells extend neurites which contain synaptic vesicle-like structures and regulated secretory granules. By immunofluorescence microscopy, pIgR, like the synaptic vesicle protein synaptophysin, accumulates in both the cell body and the neurites. On the other hand, the transferrin receptor, which normally recycles at the basolateral surface in epithelial cells, and the cation-independent mannose 6-phosphate receptor, a marker of late endosomes, are largely restricted to the cell body. pIgR internalizes ligand into endosomes within the cell body and the neurites, while uptake of ligand by the low density lipoprotein receptor occurs primarily into endosomes within the cell body. We conclude that transport of membrane proteins to PC12 neurites as well as to specialized endosomes within these processes is selective and appears to be governed by similar mechanisms that dictate sorting in epithelial cells. Additionally, two types of endosomes can be identified in polarized PC12 cells by the differential uptake of ligand, a housekeeping type in the cell bodies and a specialized endosome in the neurites. Recent findings suggest that specialized axonal endosomes in neurons are likely to give rise to synaptic vesicles (Mundigl, O., M. Matteoli, L. Daniell, A. Thomas-Reetz, A. Metcalf, R. Jahn, and P. De Camilli. 1993. J. Cell Biol. 122:1207-1221). Although pIgR reaches the specialized endosomes in the neurites of PC12 cells, we find by subcellular fractionation that under a variety of conditions it is efficiently excluded from synaptic vesicle-like structures as well as from secretory granules.

Abstract:
This chapter provides biographical background on Jonathan Daniels. His education at the University of North Carolina, ambitions as a novelist, and publication of Clash of Angels (1930) are highlighted. The death in childbirth of his first wife, Elizabeth Bridgers Daniels, made it difficult for the grieving Daniels to complete a second, satirical novel that might have been his entry into the developing Southern Renaissance alongside his former classmate Thomas Wolfe. The liberal-minded editorials Daniels wrote after taking over from his father as editor of the Raleigh News and Observer in 1933 are contrasted with Josephus Daniels's role in North Carolina's "white supremacy campaign" of 1898 that resulted in the Wilmington massacre. Jonathan's liberalism reflected the influence of other white southern liberals such as Regionalist sociologist Howard Odum and publisher W. T. Couch. New York editor Harold Strauss encouraged Daniels to write a book about the South, resulting in his journey.

Abstract:
Sherman wanted Thomas to move south toward Atlanta and cross Peach Tree Creek on July 19, as McPherson approached the city from the east. Schofield still had the assignment of trying to fill the gap between Thomas and McPherson. Federal efforts resulted in less progress than expected. Thomas pushed some of his men across the creek that day. After a small fight, Thomas J. Wood's division established a bridgehead where the Buck Head and Atlanta Road crossed the creek. It took a longer, bloodier battle for Caleb Dilworth's brigade of Jefferson C. Davis' division, Fourteenth Corps, to cross at the mouth of Green Bone Creek. Here Confederate General Daniel H. Reynolds' Brigade fought hard but was forced back. Davis then formed a bridgehead on the south side of the creek. Also, John W. Geary's division of the Twentieth Corps and Richard W. Johnson's division of the Fourteenth Corps crossed the creek between those two bridgeheads. In the Confederate army, Hood wanted to attack Thomas that day but his army was in disarray with many high level commanders shifting their responsibilities because of his elevation to army leadership. Hood also needed time to acclimate himself to his new position.

Abstract:
What is consciousness? What does it do? Could we have evolved without it? ‘Why the mystery?’ considers the definition of consciousness and how psychologists, neuroscientists, and philosophers have tried to explain it. From the Cartesian dualism of René Descartes to the ‘hard problem’ of consciousness, a phrase coined in 1994 by the Australian philosopher David Chalmers, and the question ‘What is it like to be a bat?’ of American philosopher Thomas Nagel, it is shown that there is no generally agreed definition of consciousness. Subjectivity (or phenomenality), qualia, and the ideas of philosopher Daniel Dennett are also discussed.

Abstract:
This chapter describes William Rosecrans’s discovery that Braxton Bragg and the Army of Tennessee had left Chattanooga unoccupied and his frantic efforts to occupy the city with elements of the Army of the Cumberland. Meanwhile Bragg concentrated his army between Lee & Gordon’s Mill and LaFayette, Georgia. There he saw a fleeting opportunity for a counterstroke and that night issued orders to Thomas Hindman and Daniel Hill to implement a bold plan to destroy Rosecrans’s forces in detail. At the same time, elements of the Army of the Cumberland settled into occupation of Chattanooga, the original objective of the campaign.
