Abstract:
Legislation is lagging behind technical and social developments in the labour market, which is posing new problems in both labour law and social security law. To work full time for only one employer is no longer the norm. However, social security schemes and worker protection regulations are often designed for this model. Furthermore, the change in the world of work towards digitalisation, flexibility and a number of employers or contract providers being on platforms such as Uber, Mechanical Turk etc. means that the existing legal foundations no longer do justice to all employment relationships. The new forms of employment are a challenge for both scholars and practitioners of law. The contributions in this volume, complied from the proceedings at the 8th Research Assistants’ Conference on the Labour and Social Security Laws, which took place in Zurich from 26th to 28th July 2018, are dedicated to these topics. Abstract:
While examples of conventional romance fiction continued during this decade, fiction also became the vehicle for topical satire, as seen in Jonathan Swift’s Tale of a Tub and Delarivier Manley’s New Atalantis. Publishers were offering collections of novels in uniform editions. Epistolary fictions were increasingly popular, such as Thomas Brown’s Letters from the Dead to the Living. Fictions by Daniel Defoe and others mingled factual accounts of events and people with allegory, fable, and sensational adventure, as found in A True Relation of the Apparition of One Mrs. Veal.

Abstract:
Full text
Abstract:
The main aim of this chapter is to describe in detail separationism: its core aspects, its motivations, its advantages, and its weaknesses. In doing so two broad forms of separationism are detailed and contrasted. ‘Simple separationism’ is developed using the work of Simon Blackburn. ‘Complex separationism’ was expressed in a paper by Daniel Elstein and Thomas Hurka and is extended in this chapter. As well as showing how these two forms of separationism contrast and their advantages and disadvantages, this chapter highlights the desiderata that any account of thin and thick concepts much satisfy and lists four worries that one may have with nonseparationism.

Abstract:
Abstract:
Making a Difference presents fifteen original essays on causation and counterfactuals by philosophers and political theorists. Collectively, they represent the state of the art on these topics. The essays in this volume are inspired by the work of the late Australian philosopher Peter Menzies (1953–2015), who himself made a very great difference to our contemporary understanding of these matters. Topics covered include: the semantics of counterfactuals, agency theories of causation, the context-sensitivity of causal claims, structural equation models, mechanisms, mental causation, the causal exclusion argument, and free will. Abstract:

Abstract:
The monitoring concepts of German federal states aim to protect the public from sex offenders and violent offenders at risk of recidivism, which is intended to be achieved through good cooperation and exchange of information between the agencies involved. This study evaluates these structures and the procedures within the concepts in 10 German federal states. Since those concepts are designed to minimise the risk of recidivism as a preventive measure, a process evaluation offers a good opportunity to examine the efficiency and effectiveness of the processes carried out. In a subsequent comparison, the study identifies weaknesses and mistakes in the concepts in order to submit proposals for their optimisation and initiate further research studies. Abstract:
Is Bruno Latour a ‘state thinker’? His intensive examination of Thomas Hobbes’ Leviathan certainly forms an important linchpin of and a link to understanding his wide-ranging and interdisciplinary work. Asking about Latour’s understanding of the state proves to be a promising approach to addressing core questions in actor-network theory, to Latour’s time-diagnostic critique of modernity and to his search for the prospects of future political collectivity. The contributions collected here present various approaches to Bruno Latour’s work on problems of statehood and political collectivity, on his analysis of law, on his concept of power and on his political ecology, as well as on how his thinking connects to matters of international relations and the theory of publics. Full text
Abstract:
Many poets first appeared in print in miscellanies published by John Dryden and Jacob Tonson that appeared in the 1690s and continued to be published through the first two decades of the eighteenth century, Others first appeared in periodicals such as the Spectator and the Guardian. Women poets including Mary Mollineux, Sarah Fyge, Elizabeth Singer Rowe, Mary Chudleigh, and Anne Finch published book-length collections. Among the most popular poetic forms were the Pindaric ode and the pastoral, some poets attempting to match classical models, others such as Gay making mocking use of the pastoral to comment on contemporary life. Isaac Watts published important and influential collections of hymns. Daniel Defoe published his longest satire, Jure Divino. Our view of many popular poets of this decade, however, including John Dennis, Thomas Tickell, Richard Blackmore, and Ambrose Philips, has been through the lens of Alexander Pope’s later satire on his contemporaries, The Dunciad.

Abstract:
The Social Media Handbook provides guidance on long-term developments in the ever-changing social media sector and explains fundamental interrelationships in this field. It describes a strategy model for the development of one’s own solutions, summarises the theories, methods and models of leading authors and shows their practical application, while also highlighting current developments and dealing with the topic of data processing in social media. An examination of the platform economy with its economic functions facilitates the classification of business models in social media. The book also shows how platforms and their algorithms can influence our actions and shape our opinions. Full text
Abstract:
This book argues that shifting attitudes to nonhuman animals in eighteenth-century Britain affected the emergence of radical political claims based on the concept of universal human rights. It examines a tension in 1790s radicalism between the anthropocentrism of the concept of the ‘rights of man’, and the challenge to human exceptionalism entailed by attempts to extend benevolent consideration to nonhuman animals. The development of a naturalistic and sympathetic literature of animal subjectivity is traced with particular attention to the innovatory representation of nonhuman animal perspectives within children’s literature. The study explores the complex relationship between animal representation and claims for human rights through an investigation of writing by and about four overlapping human groups—children, women, slaves, and the lower classes—whose social subordination was grounded in their cultural construction as less than fully human. Emancipatory movements of political reform, abolition, and feminism, and the animal representations produced within those movements, were affected by the varying forms of animalization applied to each oppressed group. A final chapter considers the legacy of 1790s animal rights discourses in the early-nineteenth-century campaign for anti-cruelty legislation. The book’s many literary animals include the ass, ambiguous emblem of sympathetic animal writing; the great ape or ‘orang-outang’, central to racist discourse; and the pig, adopted by 1790s radicals to signify their rebellion. Writers considered include Sterne, Coleridge, Southey, Wordsworth, Clare, Wollstonecraft, Barbauld, Hays, Mary Robinson, Equiano, Sancho, Cugoano, Clarkson, Thomas Spence, Daniel Isaac Eaton, John Oswald, Joseph Ritson, Thomas Erskine, and John Lawrence.
