Abstract:
The “farm problem” was a phrase that appeared on the scene in the 1930s after a continued inability of the market to absorb what farmers were producing. Actually, there had always been a farm problem, mostly one of overproduction, and lack of rural employment. Short-term crises were treated with short-term remedies. Banking “panics” came and went; tariff policy was a principal worry for farmers, and land policy (the public domain) had affected farmers since the time of Thomas Jefferson. It was not until the Great Depression that the federal government intervened directly in the market place to affect prices and incomes. The government also intervened in labor markets and foreign trade to benefit the farm sector. Government has never been able to extract itself. The farm problem is that too many resources being committed to agriculture, and farmers and the rural sector are unable to adjust. Ultimately, the issue became political: how much (or how little) money should be spent on agriculture, and in what way should it be spent? So long as the agricultural budget dominated the federal budget there was “war.” Today, agriculture has a smaller share of the budget but the farm problem remains. Henry Wallace, US Secretary of Agriculture under FDR, would be astounded!

The Thomas Jefferson National Accelerator Facility (JLab) 12GeV accelerator upgrade completed in 2015 is now producing data at volumes unprecedented for the lab. The resources required to process this data now exceed the capacity of the onsite farm necessitating the use of offsite computing resources for the first time in the history of JLab. GlueX is now utilizing NERSC and PSC for raw data production. Details of the workflow are presented.

Abstract:
George Orwell’s Animal Farm is traditionally read as a satire on dictatorships in general, and the Bolshevik Revolution in particular. This article postulates the notion that the schema of the book has attained the force of metonymy to such an extent that whenever one alludes to the title of the book or some lines from it, one conjures up images associated with a dictatorship. The title of the book has become a part of the conceptual political lexicon of the English language to refer to the corruption of a utopian ideology. As an ideological state, Animal Farm has its vision, which is embedded in its constitution; it has the vote, a national anthem and a flag. It even has its patriots, double-dealers, social engineers and lechers. In this way the title Animal Farm, like Joseph Heller’s Catch-22, or Thomas More’s Utopia, functions metonymically to map a conceptual framework which matches the coordinates of the book. The article concludes with a look at contemporary society to show how Orwell’s satire endorses the words of Lord Acton, namely, that power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely.

Lewandowski, Bonny A. "Landscape in Peril: A Cultural Assessment of Thomas's Wharf and Woodlands Farm, Northampton County, Eastern Shore, Virginia." Thesis, Virginia Tech, 1998. http://hdl.handle.net/10919/36751.

Abstract:
This thesis develops a philosophy for management, preservation, and interpretation of Woodlands Farm and Thomas's Wharf in Northampton County on Virginia's Eastern Shore. The U. S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service methodology for historic properties, including cultural landscapes, is used to complete this study. The National Park Service method includes four interrelated steps: (1) historical research, and (2) inventory and documentation of existing conditions, (3) site analysis and evaluation of significance and integrity, and (4) recommendations for future management. Essential to the future of Woodlands Farm and Thomas's Wharf is continued use of the property while retaining character defining features that make them significant. The most suitable management philosophy for a historic property that allows for protection and maintenance of significant features, as well as future use and development, is Rehabilitation. Thomas's Wharf's significance is derived from fragments of many periods and histories can be read on the landscape; a palimpsest. The U.S. Department of the Interior, National Park Service evaluates a landscape much as one evaluates a historic building, defining it as a type or from a specific time period. The U.S. Department of the Interior's criteria for significance does not address a landscape, like Thomas's Wharf, as part of the continuum of history. Rather the study of landscapes is limited and the criteria does not acknowledge a site's broader continuum of significance. Landscapes that are records of change and evolution, palimpsests of a people, culture, and place, need to be identified and deemed significant for that quality.

In ASME 2016 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2016. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2016-66815.

Abstract:
In-situ calibration methods using a single spherical-shaped transmitting hydrophone (idealized as a monopole acoustic source) have traditionally been used for radiated sound measurements of turbomachinery performed in the Garfield Thomas 1.22-m diameter water tunnel located at The Pennsylvania State University’s Applied Research Laboratory (ARL Penn State). In this reverberant field, the monopole source containing known transmitting characteristics was used to calibrate acoustic sensors that were either near or far from the source. This method typically works well when the type of source is monopole in nature; however, many acoustics sources can be dipole or quadrupole in nature. In this study we investigated the applicability of using dipole sources in a space such as a well-characterized reverberant tank, and we found through a virtual dipole method that the radiation still appears monopole in the reverberant field. The method was extended for the vibration of a panel (a known dipole source) and once again the monopole assumption for the in-situ calibration for a near-field hydrophone and conventional reverberant hydrophones remained consistent.

Full text
Abstract:
The development of computational fluid dynamics (CFD) can be traced back as far as the early 1900’s. The pioneering efforts by Richardson [1], Courant, Friedrichs, and Lewy [2], Southwell [3], Von Neumann [4], Lax [5], as well as Godunov [6] address the fundamental issues in numerical analyses for CFD. It is immediately clear that a major portion of these efforts was focused on one of the most difficult problems in resolving the discontinuous fluid phenomena in a discretized space — the Riemann problem [7]. As it will be seen later, it remains the most studied problem in CFD. However, if one is interested in the viscous flow simulation, Thom [8] probably obtained the first-ever numerical solution by solving the partial differential equation for a low speed flow past a circular cylinder. For a scholarly description of the CFD historical perspective, the books by Roach [9] and Tannehill, Anderson, and Pletcher [10] are highly recommended.
