Abstract:
Abstract This response article reviews the contributions of Kirsten Marie Hartvigsen and Thomas Kraus to this special issue, and uses them as the basis for a discussion of some theoretical and methodological issues relevant to cognitive narratology and cognitive literary studies more broadly. Without offering substantial answers itself, the response poses questions concerning (i) the compatibility of different scientific frameworks used in cognitive models of characterization, particularly in the light of currently dominant ‘4ea’ models of cognition (there is a particular focus on the relationship between affective and (other) cognitive aspects of reader response, and on the role of memory); and (ii) the adaptability of cognitive models to dealing with “synthetic” and “thematic” (as opposed to “mimetic”) aspects of literary character. A brief conclusion argues for two-way traffic between the cognitive sciences and literary criticism.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Edmund Burke is considered the father of conservatism. With his ‘Reflections on the French Revolution’ (1790), Burke presented a work that was already controversial at the time of its publication. In Burke’s understanding, people and their social institutions are historical beings that are subject to change but unchanging in the face of all change. The central concept in Burke’s argument is heritage, which encompasses both collective, historical memory and social organisation, and specifically refers to constitutional traditions. Society is hierarchically structured and forms an organic unit based on a necessary balance between the principles of continuity and regeneration. According to Burke, the state is the coagulated historical rationality of people who must be taken at least as seriously as contemporaries in their efforts to shape a good order. Abstract:
Corporate criminal Liability poses new challenges for prosecutors, defense attorneys, courts and corporations in terms of fairness in criminal proceedings: Plurality of transnational and multi-sectoral enforcement requires coordination and delimitation with regard to the right to silence versus obligations to cooperate; sanctioning and asset recovery require for identification of addressees in multi-level groups of corporations; huge amounts of data require forensic processing in line with procedural and economic rights of corporations, the protection of employee‘s rights and data protection standards. Abstract:
Terrorism is first and foremost viewed as a matter of security policy; however, its emergence, perception, effects, prevention and mitigation actually involve a multitude of societal sectors as well as academic fields, which also means that numerous academics, practitioners and decision-makers are in a position to contribute to analysing and countering terrorism. This handbook serves as the first German-language reference work on terrorism studies, capturing the complexity of this subject in its entirety. By using theories and perspectives from various academic disciplines, the handbook encourages scholars and students to apply their expertise to the field of terrorism studies and to emphasise interdisciplinary work. Abstract:
The Weimar Constitution marked Germany’s first sortie into democracy, with the Republic intended to be democratic, humane and constitutional and based on the principle of popular sovereignty. However, its election system of proportional representation favoured small parties and impeded the formation of a government, with its final governments being presidential cabinets. Constitutions are often analysed by various academic fields. While philosophy and historiography set the framework for this analysis, constitutional law may be regarded as the principal discipline in this regard. The social sciences are first and foremost concerned with constitutional reality, and there is indeed strong evidence that it was the Weimar Republic’s lack of socio-economic foundations that ultimately caused its demise. This volume is divided into twelve parts (perspectives) and will appeal to readers interested in politics, law, (contemporary) history, sociology and philosophy. With contributions by Stefan Bajohr, Wolfgang Bergem, Sabine Berghahn, Ursula Büttner, Norbert Campagna, Wolfgang Elz, Heiner Fechner, Helmut Gebhardt, Michael Geistlinger, Christoph Gusy, Volker Haug, Franz Hederer, Tobias Herbst, Peter Hilpold, Marcus Höreth, Ernst-Ulrich Huster, Eckhard Jesse, Herbert Kalb, Daniel-Erasmus Khan, Franz Kohout, Skadi Siiri Krause, Volker Kruse, Stefan Kutzner, Hans-Joachim Lauth, Oliver Lembcke, Matthias Lemke, Thomas Leuerer, Josef Marko, Reinhard Mehring, Martin H.W. Fussi, Alessandra, and Raffaele Rodogno, eds. Moral Psychology of Shame. The Rowman & Littlefield Publishing Group, 2023. https://doi.org/10.5040/9798881817626.

Full text
Abstract:
Few emotions have divided opinion as deeply as shame. Some scholars have argued that shame is essentially a maladaptive emotion used to oppress minorities and reinforce stigmas and traumas, an emotion that leaves the self at the mercy of powerful others. Other scholars, however, have argued that the absence of a sense of shame in a subject—their shamelessness—is tantamount to a vicious moral insensitivity. As the eleven original chapters in this collection attest, however, shame scholars are entering a new phase, one in which scholarship no longer attempts to defend one side of shame against the other, but rather accepts both faces as faithful to the phenomenon to be explained. At the core of our understanding of shame there are profound disagreements about the importance of the Other in shaping our moral identity. As this collection shows by its study of shame, the difficulty of the connection between Self, Other, and morality spans over millennia and cultures and currently animates important debates at the core of feminism and disability studies. Abstract:
This book is the first anthology of perspectives on the future of text, one of our most important mediums for thinking and communicating, with a Foreword by the co-inventor of the Internet, Vint. Cerf and a Postscript by the founder of the modern Library of Alexandria, Ismail Serageldin. In a time with astounding developments in computer special effects in movies and the emergence of powerful AI, text has developed little beyond spellcheck and blue links. In this work we look at myriads of perspectives to inspire a rich future of text through contributions from academia, the arts, business and technology. We hope you will be as inspired as we are as to the potential power of text truly unleashed. Abstract:
Abstract Alison Krauss and Robert Plant first sang together in 2004 at a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame concert, launching a remarkable collaboration. T Bone Burnett produced their 2007 “Raising Sand” album, a huge sales success and album of the year Grammy winner. Rounder kept up its high release volume with work by Irma Thomas, Uncle Earl, Raffi, and Jelly Roll Morton reissues. Somehow, the Canadian progressive-rock power trio Rush wound up on Rounder, too, because Fourth Rounder John Virant was a huge fan.

Abstract:
Abstract Many music educators have advocated the development of students’ creativity and improvisation skills in music classrooms (Biasini, Thomas, & Pogonowski, 1970; Consortium of National Arts Education Associations, 1994; Contemporary Music Project, 1966, 1971; National Association of Schools of Music, 1999; Richmond, 1989). Despite such advocacy, much of the literature on the topic of improvisation in music education points to the fact that it is rarely part of the core of music education curricula (e.g., Azzara, 1993; Kratus, 1989; Schmidt & Sinor, 1986; Webster, 1987a). With the publication of National Standards for Arts Education (Consortium of National Arts Education Associations, 1994), music educators have become increasingly aware of the importance of the art of improvisation as a valuable musical skill for all music students. Researchers have continued to articulate the need for improvisation instructional materials, teacher education in improvisation, and, in general, emphasis on improvisation as a vital part of music curricula (e.g., Azzara, 1999; Bitz, 1999; Brown, 1991; Della Pietra & Campbell, 1995; Gregory, 1996; Jorgensen, 1998; Lubart, 1998; Richmond, 1989; Riveire, 1998; Rosfeld, 1989; Townsend, 1998).

Abstract:
Abstract In the following article I shall present a new approach to the microanalytic study of cognitive-affective regulatory processes in psychotherapeutic interaction. In this approach the examination of the expressive component of emotions communicated through facial expressions is of central importance. The approach is based on the assumption, shared by many psychotherapists, that the interaction between client and therapist contributes essentially to therapeutic change (Caspar & Grawe, 1989; Elliott, 1984; Gill & Hoffman, 1982; Grawe, 1987; Greenberg & Safran, 1987; Horowitz, 1979; Krause, 1982, 1984; Moser, 1985; Rice & Greenberg, 1984; Safran, 1990a, 1990b; Schneider, 1989; Stem, 1985; Strupp, 1987; Sullivan, 1953; Thoma & Kiichele, 1985, 1988; Weiss, Sampson et al., 1986). However, little is known about how these processes of change work. It is true that there is a considerable amount of clinical knowledge about emotions in therapeutic interactions at a macrolevel, but we still know too little about what is happening at a microlevel of affective processes within therapy. It is thus important to develop methods to examine the therapeutic interaction, along with the cognitive-affective processes involved.
