Peters, Friedrich Ernst. "Thomas Mann und die Romantik." Universität Potsdam, 2013. http://opus.kobv.de/ubp/volltexte/2013/6126/.

Full text
Abstract:

Heintz, Anne-Marie. "L'espace symbolique chez Thomas Mann." Tours, 1990. http://www.theses.fr/1990TOUR2014.

Full text
Abstract:
Putting aside the idea of a systematic study of the different space fields appearing in the work, we have chosen to lay the emphasis on some of the most evocative places, to produce echoes between them, to unearth a network of convergences and to bring to light a sort of "symbolic geography" characteristic of thomas mann's work. Our process goes through three phases : 1) harmony ; 2) dissonance ; 3) the attempt to re-create a harmonious space. To us the "symbolic places" will be those that constitute a step in the relation between the person and the world. This relation ranges from acceptance to confrontation. But the most important aspect of the way space has been conceived in the work studied seens to us to be the ground for evolution. Its very structure goes along with the action, sometimes unveils it, accompanies it, but never hinders it. Crossing a threshold with difficulty, for instance, both shows the topologic and symbolic value of space

Malcolm, Fiona. "The literary relationship between Klaus and Thomas Mann." Thesis, University of Kent, 2003. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.528652.

Full text
Abstract:
The publication of the diaries of Thomas Mann has led to increased scholarly interest in this writer as a private man. The writer's son, Klaus, has also attracted increasing attention in recent years. Much of this attention has emanated from biased standpoints, however, such as psychological, gay studies or political. This study is the first examination dedicated to the literary relationship between father and son. It seeks to maintain an unbiased view, concentrating on the writings and avoiding unfounded speculation. Chapter 1 provides an in-depth examination of existing studies, setting this thesis in its context. Chapter 2 then undertakes to analyse the early writings of Klaus, in comparison with writings by Thomas, demonstrating the existence of a dialogue-inliterature in these writings. The third chapter provides a detailed comparison of the diaries of father and son. Chapter 4 conducts an examination of the political undertakings and stance of both figures, and questions some of the standard conclusions, for example regarding the political development of Klaus. Fresh findings are imparted, for example on the Decision affair. Chapter 5 examines later writings, focusing primarily on Klaus' Alexander (1929), and demonstrating the continuity of themes in the author's writings. A hitherto unexplored source for one of Thomas' literary figures is also considered. The final chapter compares Thomas' Doktor Faustus with his son's earlier Mephisto and other writings, with ground-breaking results. This chapter also demonstrates that important sources for Thomas' novel have not been acknowledged. The idea of a father exerting an influence on the writings and approach of his son is not a surprising one. A less expected outcome of such an examination is that of the influence of a son on the approach and writings of his father. Given the status of Thomas Mann, in contrast to that of his son, such an outcome would be even more unexpected. This examination has, nevertheless, dared to pose the question as to whether such an influence could be possible. It is hoped that the results of this examination will constitute a significant advancement on previous scholarship of these two writers.

Tunstall, Allcock Thomas. "Thomas C. Mann and Latin America, 1945-1966." Thesis, University of Cambridge, 2012. http://ethos.bl.uk/OrderDetails.do?uin=uk.bl.ethos.606911.

Full text
Abstract:
This dissertation provides a detailed examination of the influence of Thomas Clifton Mann on the Latin American policy of the United States of America. A Foreign Service Officer from 1942, Mann eventually rose to the position of Undersecretary of State for Economic Affairs, and was President Lyndon Johnson’s most valued adviser on inter-American policy until his retirement from government service in May 1966. Commonly portrayed as highly conservative, insensitive to Latin American needs, and opposed to U.S. aid programs, Mann was a far more complex character than his critics have allowed. During the Eisenhower administration Mann’s influence was vital in reorienting policy priorities in Washington, emphasising the need for price stabilisation measures and limited development aid. During the Kennedy administration he opposed the Bay of Pigs invasion, before serving as Ambassador to Mexico where he successfully resolved the nation’s longest running border dispute. Most influential under Lyndon Johnson, Mann sought to place U.S. policy on a stable and sustainable path, reining in unrealistic expectations while fending off attacks from fiscal conservatives opposed to aid measures of any kind. In studying Mann’s career, much is revealed regarding the nature of U.S.-Latin American relations during a crucial period of history. While U.S. goals remained largely consistent, the nature of the challenges faced and the tactics used to counter them did not. Mann’s career saw the Cold War come to Latin America, and was met with both aid and military intervention, often in the form of counterinsurgency training and operations. Mann’s role in developing those polices reveals the contrasts and, more often, consistencies between the administrations he served, and undermines claims that the transition from Kennedy to Johnson witnessed a radical policy overhaul. Studying Mann’s career also illuminates divisive internal debates over the nature and meaning of inter-American relations, and the role and influence of an individual within Washington’s policymaking bureaucracy.
