Abstract:
This essay examines the political environment in Ireland during the nineteenth century and evaluates the impact of national patriotism upon the social landscape. In analyzing the changing topography of Victorian Ireland, religious ideology played a significant role in carving out the model of Irish culture at the close of the century. Thomas Moore's poetry reflects the cultural significance of both political and religious ideals by his use of imagery and language to unite these two social forces and represent them as thematic cooperatives essential to the identity and survival of Irish nationhood.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the role of music in the life and works of the Romantic Irish author and lyricist Thomas Moore (1779-1852). It details Moore's musical knowledge and ideas with the aim of repositioning him within contemporary Romantic music and literary culture. The first chapter provides a comprehensive musical biography of Moore and argues that Moore engaged with, and was influenced by, contemporary philosophical treatises on music. Chapter two investigates Moore's works alongside other popular 'national air' collections of the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, and focuses on Moore's popular song-book collections Irish Melodies (1808-34), National Airs (1818-27), and Sacred Songs (1816-24). The latter two works in particular have received scant scholarly attention to date, while criticism on the Irish Melodies has largely focused on these songs as poetic texts lacking in political fervour. Chapters three and four focus on placing Moore's songs back in the medium for which they were originally intended: sociable amateur performance. Chapter three explores Moore's performances of his songs in the drawing-rooms of London's elite, and argues that these are an essential, yet traditionally neglected aspect of Moore's musical career. The final chapter turns to these performances specifically in relation to gender and highlights the popularity of Moore's songs amongst female amateur performers. This study aims to provide a deeper understanding of Moore's expansive and multi-faceted musical career, and will demonstrate that it is only when we consider his songs as songs that emerged from a number of important contextual influences that we can begin to reposition him as a pivotal figure in Romantic literary and musical culture.

Abstract:
This thesis examines the role of Irish sentimental ballads, especially Thomas Moore’s Irish Melodies, in colonial New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria. First is a study of Irish soprano Catherine Hayes (1818–1861) and her tours to NSW and Victoria in 1854 and 1855. Hayes represented a Victorian-era feminine ideal and her concerts, which included both opera and Irish sentimental ballads, were seen to raise the musical standard in Australia. The second study examines a series of public lectures on the subject of ancient Irish music delivered by Irish lawyer John Hubert Plunkett (1802–1869), previously attorney general of NSW. The third is a study of The Australian Album for 1857. This musical album was published in Sydney and was designed to serve as a specimen of the high standard of music in Australia at the time. The album opens with a piano fantasia composed by visiting French pianist Edouard Boulanger (1829–1863) based on ‘The Last Rose of Summer,’ one of Moore’s Irish Melodies. Fourth and last is a study of the Thomas Moore statue erected in Ballarat, Victoria, in 1889. The design of the statue and its unveiling conveyed a notion of unity within the white community and feelings of Australian nationalism. Through these studies I argue that Irish ballads played an important role in creating a respectable cultural identity not just for the Irish community but for the developing Australian society as well.

Abstract:
The purpose of this thesis is to examine how Thomas Moore functioned as a political commentator for Ireland. Often Moore has not been taken seriously as a political writer, and his literary reputation in general suffered a downfall after his death. However, this study aims to re-evaluate Moore's place in the society, literature and political fora of his day. This project has added to knowledge in various ways. For example, an examination of the politicised aspects of Moore's writings is an underdeveloped area of Moore scholarship and yet it is an area of study that is vital to a proper understanding of Moore. Secondly, the thesis is closely examining many of Moore's works which have previously been given little, or no, attention, and yet carry an important political message and commentary about that time. This study has involved a close analysis of Moore's writings, from his earliest juvenile works right through to his final publications, including his poetry, prose and personal writings (incorporating his letters, journals, and memoirs). As well as this, the historical, political, literary, cultural and biographical context of Moore and his time is alluded to in order to illuminate Moore's political commentating in his writings. This thesis has taken an interdisciplinary approach incorporating within the study aspects of history, politics and Irish studies, as well as being grounded within the discipline of English. This project has also evaluated the many critical responses which Moore and his writings have received regarding his politics. The study provides much evidence that Moore can be considered as a political commentator for Ireland and that his own writings testify to this. The thesis concludes by carrying out an evaluation of Moore as a political commentator, and examining his political influence.

Abstract:
O aspecto filosófico é tratado no segundo e no terceiro capítulos. The thesis aims to understand Utopia as a modern political work of literary and philosophical character. The approach to the literary aspect is made in the first chapter and resumed at the end, and seeks first to establish the fundamental differences between Utopia and some of the ideal constructs that preceded it and with which it is recurrently identified, such as Age Of Gold, paradise and Atlantis; secondly, it also seeks to verify the proximity and distance of Utopia in relation to satire, a literary genre with which the work has been identified more recently by a portion of the commentators. The philosophical aspect is dealt with in the second and third chapters. In the second, we try to map the relations of Utopia with classical political philosophy, especially with regard to ideal philosophical constructs, while chapter three discusses the connection of Utopia with Erasmian humanism, of which it is at once debtor and critical. The fourth chapter presents the final considerations, seeking to characterize the Utopia as a product of the English Renaissance, a product that combines literature and philosophy in a unique way, both merging to compose the political sense of the work, both with equal citizenship rights in Utopia.

Abstract:
In recent years, the development of frontier areas brings added challenges to formation evaluation, especially thinly bedded reservoirs. It is challenging to evaluate such reservoirs due to the low resistivity values and high shale volume, which masks the contrast between water and hydrocarbon zones. Using conventional approaches in these types of reservoirs will underestimate the hydrocarbon potential and reserves estimates. A study has been carried out of the thin-bed laminated reservoir in B-field using the tensor model technique to assess the hydrocarbon potential. Additional data from borehole imaging and sonic logs are critical for enhancing the evaluation of hydrocarbon potential and complements the result of the tensor model evaluation. The study was conducted to calculate the sand resistivity and sand porosity using a combination of the tensor model and the Thomas-Stieber model. The tensor model uses acquired horizontal and vertical resistivities, while the Thomas-Stieber model uses the calculated shale volume and porosity. One of the main parameters in the tensor model is shale resistivity, which upon analysis, varies across many shale sections in the well. This uncertainty is reduced by picking multiple shale resistivity values based on borehole image facies analysis. The VPVS ratio technique and Brie’s plot using compressional and shear travel time are used as a qualitative analysis that indicates the same gas-bearing interval. The tensor model calculations improve hydrocarbon saturation by a range of 4-21%, depending on sand thickness and shale volume, which increases the net to gross by more than 20%. The borehole image facies analysis helps to objectively pick the shale resistivity parameters to avoid subjective interpretation and underestimating the pay. A qualitative approach using sonic data helps to identify the potential gas-bearing interval and complement the previous tensor model interpretation. Although all interpretation methods indicate a similar gas-bearing interval that correlates with the mudlog total gas reading, the combination of the tensor and Thomas-Stieber method with image constrained shale resistivities gives the most definitive gas saturation and net pay The novelty of this study is to showcase two things. First is the application of combined tensor and Thomas-Stieber model in a laminated reservoir, with image constrained shale resistivity for improved gas saturation and net pay. The second is to highlight the use of gas-sensitive sonic data to confirm the gas saturated interval.

Abstract:
A numerical approach is developed for simulation of pressure wave propagation in a tube containing a dilute concentration of small gas bubbles. The two-phase fluid is considered homogeneous and spatial distribution of bubbles is assumed to be uniform. Bubble oscillations are modeled using the Keller equation which accounts for liquid compressibility. Heat transfer between liquid and gas is included in the analysis through solution of the radial conduction equation for a spherical gas bubble with moving interface. An energy balance over the bubble surface determines bubble internal pressure, which is assumed to be uniform. Continuity and momentum relations for the homogenous mixture along with the Keller equation are used to derive an alternate set of equations, which are more amenable to application of elementary numerical methods. These alternate equations include a diffusion equation, which is linear in the homogeneous mixture pressure. Two additional equations define the bubble radius and gas-liquid interface speed in terms of the local spatial variation in the homogeneous pressure field. The diffusion equation is solved easily using the second-order accurate Crank-Nicolson method in conjunction with the Thomas algorithm for the discretized tridiagonal algebraic system. The remaining equations comprising the fluid model are solved with an explicit, second-order accurate predictor-corrector scheme. The present approach avoids the need for staggered grids and iterative pressure correction methods used in previous work. Numerical calculations are carried out for a shock wave in a liquid column containing gas bubbles. Results show good agreement with experimental data available in the literature.

Abstract:
Abstract The clinical success of bone-interfacing orthopaedic and dental implants is dependent on adequate fixation of the implant by mechanical interlock with ingrown bone tissue (i.e., functional osseointegration). The rate and reliability with which osseointegration is achieved are influenced by a number of factors, including the surface geometry of the implant (Thomas and Cook, 1985; Simmons et al., 1999). However, the mechanisms by which implant surface geometry influences initial bone formation remain unresolved. Identifying the factors that allow bone-interfacing implants to osseointegrate more rapidly and reliably should lead to improvements in their use and design.

Abstract:
The article is devoted to the problem of the social state as one of the fundamental constitutional principles of the state structure of modern developed countries. The course of historical development of philosophical and legal thought on this problem is considered. The idea of a close connection between the concept of the social state and the ideas of utopian socialism of Thomas More and Henri Saint-Simon is put forward. Liberals also made a significant contribution to the development of the idea of the social state, they argued that the ratio of equality and freedom is a key problem for the classical liberal doctrine. It is concluded that the emergence of the theory of the social state for objective reasons was inevitable, since it is due to the historical development of society.

Abstract:
The study involved 137 women with various values of body mass index, aged 17 to 72 years (mean age 35 years). The first group included 81 women with insufficient and normal body weight. The second group was formed by women with overweight and obesity in the amount of 56 people. Analysis of data collected using the Thomas Cash Multimodal Body Attitude Questionnaire (MBSRQ, Thomas F. Cash) showed differences corresponding to the following scales: Overweight Preoccupation, Self-Classified Weight, and Body Areas Satisfaction. Women from the second group are characterized by a more accurate idea of their own weight and a higher concern about being overweight. Satisfaction with body parameters was more pronounced in the group of women with insufficient and normal body weight, which suggests that satisfaction with body parameters in modern society is very often accepted in combination with a slender body. To study the phenomenon of an unhealthy lifestyle of a person and the tendency to neglect one’s own body, we used the questionnaire “Healthy Behavior Disorders” by E.L. Lutsenko, O.E. Gabelkova. Differences were found on the Self-Injurious Behavior scale. For women with insufficient and normal body weight, conscious or unconscious self-harm is more common. Other scales did not differ significantly in the two samples. It was also found that in the total sample (n=137), the actual weight has only one correlation out of 9 scales of the “Healthy Behavior Disorders” methodology – a direct correlation with eating disorders. At the same time, in overweight preoccupation we found significant associations with four out of nine scales: eating disorders, craving for alcohol, chasing a fashionable image, and a general indicator of propensity to violate healthy behavior. This suggests that the subjective rejection of one's weight can bring more negative consequences than actual excess weight.

Abstract:
Attending or working at a university requires students and faculty to manage a large amount of information to be successful. Both school administration and academic challenges have requirements to be met. One solution to this problem is to provide a virtual assistant which gives the required information to students and faculty. In this work, a virtual assistant that can completely understand conversational English and provide any needed information has been created. Talking to a virtual assistant to get the information is more convenient than the conventional way of doing it. Getting information from the virtual assistant does not require typing or browsing or any type of human interventions, which makes it more time-efficient and accessible. This solution has been tried in a private environment with a small scope at the University of St. Thomas and the results have been encouraging. Sixty percent (60%) of the users believe the assistant is very useful and the remainder finds it moderately useful.

Abstract:
The report is part of the EU Erasmus + funded project “Mindful tourism services for mentally disordered people” (MindTour). The project aims to promote and support tourism entrepreneurs to value mentally disordered clients and their families as persons and customers and help them design mindful tourism services accessible for mentally disordered people. The project is implemented in cooperation with Estonian, Belgian and Latvian higher education institutions – University of Tartu, Pärnu College (Estonia), Thomas More Mechelen-Antwerpen (Belgium), University of Latvia (Latvia), as well as leisure and tourism service providers - Pärnu Museum (Estonia), Museum Dr Guislain (Belgium) and SIA Zeit Hotel (Latvia). This report reveals the current situation in the use and accessibility of tourism services for people with mental impairment in Latvia. Researchers of the Institute of Philosophy and Sociology of the University of Latvia Agita Lūse, Liene Rācene, Diāna Popova, Nadezhda Pazuhina and Aija van der Steina researched in the autumn and spring semesters of the academic year 2020/2021, using both secondary data sources and gathering primary data through interviews with social service providers and tourism service providers, as well as participant observation and mapping of services, involving people with GRT in the consumption of tourism services.

Lalisse, Matthias. Measuring the Impact of Campaign Finance on Congressional Voting: A Machine Learning Approach. Institute for New Economic Thinking Working Paper Series, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36687/inetwp178.

Abstract:
How much does money drive legislative outcomes in the United States? In this article, we use aggregated campaign finance data as well as a Transformer based text embedding model to predict roll call votes for legislation in the US Congress with more than 90% accuracy. In a series of model comparisons in which the input feature sets are varied, we investigate the extent to which campaign finance is predictive of voting behavior in comparison with variables like partisan affiliation. We find that the financial interests backing a legislator’s campaigns are independently predictive in both chambers of Congress, but also uncover a sizable asymmetry between the Senate and the House of Representatives. These findings are cross-referenced with a Representational Similarity Analysis (RSA) linking legislators’ financial and voting records, in which we show that “legislators who vote together get paid together”, again discovering an asymmetry between the House and the Senate in the additional predictive power of campaign finance once party is accounted for. We suggest an explanation of these facts in terms of Thomas Ferguson’s Investment Theory of Party Competition: due to a number of structural differences between the House and Senate, but chiefly the lower amortized cost of obtaining individuated influence with Senators, political investors prefer operating on the House using the party as a proxy.

Albright, Jeff, Kim Struthers, Lisa Baril, John Spence, Mark Brunson, and Ken Hyde. Natural resource conditions at Glen Canyon National Recreation Area: Findings & management considerations for selected resources. National Park Service, 2022. http://dx.doi.org/10.36967/nrr-2293112.

Abstract:
Glen Canyon National Recreation Area (GLCA) encompasses more than 0.5 million ha (1.25 million ac) and extends over 322 km (200 mi) from its northern boundary in southern Utah to its southern boundary in northern Arizona. It is one of the most rugged, remote, and floristically diverse national parks on the Southern Colorado Plateau (Thomas et. al 2005) and has more than 4,900 km (3,045 mi) of waterways flowing through its eight Hydrologic Unit Code (HUC 8) watersheds. GLCA’s larger perennial rivers include the Colorado, Escalante, Dirty Devil, San Juan, and Paria, with smaller perennial and intermittent streams flowing into each of these rivers. After the creation of the Glen Canyon Dam, Lake Powell formed, covering 13% of the park’s total land area when full and the national recreation area attracts over 4 million visitors annually, and in 2019 GLCA ranked 19th highest in recreational visits out of all national parks. The National Park Service Natural Resource Condition Assessment Program selected GLCA to pilot its new NRCA project series. NRCA projects evaluate the best available science to provide park managers with reliable, actionable information pertaining to natural resource conditions in their park. For the park-selected focal study resources, this includes consideration of drivers and stressors known or suspected of influencing resource conditions; assessment of current conditions and trends for indicators of condition; and potential near-term and future activities or actions managers can consider, improving their knowledge and management of natural resources in parks. For focal resources that lack adequate data to assess current conditions, a gap analysis is provided (in lieu of a condition assessment) to highlight the present status of knowledge of the resource and to suggest useful indicators, data, and studies for further consideration and investigation. Park managers are encouraged to identify information needs and pose questions during the NRCA scoping process, with the understanding that information will be provided to help address those needs and answer those questions when possible. For a comprehensive list of GLCA managers’ questions and needs, please refer to Appendix A, Table A-1. The focus of GLCA’s NRCA study was the water-dependent resources—tinajas, springs &amp; seeps, including water quality, riparian zone, amphibians, including the northern leopard frog (Lithobates pipiens), and small, native fishes—that are found off the mainstem Colorado River. Managers were interested in these particular environments and the natural resources that depend on them because they are less studied, and the habitats are “biodiversity hotspots” due to the intersection of complex desert and freshwater ecosystems in a region limited by water. The following summaries highlight the key findings of GLCA’s focal resource drivers and stressors (Chapter 2), states (Chapter 3), and manager responses (Chapter 4).
