Abstract:
This thesis examines the role of music in the life and works of the Romantic Irish author and lyricist Thomas Moore (1779-1852). It details Moore's musical knowledge and ideas with the aim of repositioning him within contemporary Romantic music and literary culture. The first chapter provides a comprehensive musical biography of Moore and argues that Moore engaged with, and was influenced by, contemporary philosophical treatises on music. Chapter two investigates Moore's works alongside other popular 'national air' collections of the late-eighteenth and early-nineteenth centuries, and focuses

This thesis examines the role of Irish sentimental ballads, especially Thomas Moore’s Irish Melodies, in colonial New South Wales (NSW) and Victoria. First is a study of Irish soprano Catherine Hayes (1818–1861) and her tours to NSW and Victoria in 1854 and 1855. Hayes represented a Victorian-era feminine ideal and her concerts, which included both opera and Irish sentimental ballads, were seen to raise the musical standard in Australia. The second study examines a series of public lectures on the subject of ancient Irish music delivered by Irish lawyer John Hubert Plunkett (1802–1869), previo

The purpose of this thesis is to examine how Thomas Moore functioned as a political commentator for Ireland. Often Moore has not been taken seriously as a political writer, and his literary reputation in general suffered a downfall after his death. However, this study aims to re-evaluate Moore's place in the society, literature and political fora of his day. This project has added to knowledge in various ways. For example, an examination of the politicised aspects of Moore's writings is an underdeveloped area of Moore scholarship and yet it is an area of study that is vital to a proper underst

Early modern disciplines had two essential functions. First, they set the rules and boundaries of argument – knowledge was therefore legitimised and made intelligible within disciplinary contexts. And second, disciplines structured pedagogy, parcelling knowledge so it could be studied and taught. This dual role meant disciplines were epistemic and social structures.
