Abstract:
Although some readers argue that the Apologia pro vita sua is not true autobiography, Newman in fact draws on models of spiritual autobiography in two traditions—one English and Protestant, the other Augustinian and Catholic. In the early chapters, Newman patterns his account on Thomas Scott's Force of Truth, presenting his own religious development as a series of encounters with theological texts but replacing the typological hermeneutics of Scott (and of most other Protestant autobiographers) with an interpretive method derived from ecclesiastical history. In later chapters, as he narrates his conversion to Catholicism, Newman takes Augustine's Confessions as a model, invoking characteristically Augustinian figures to signal a turn to a Catholic literary tradition. More comprehensively, he adapts the multiple forms of confession that organize Augustine's work to shape his final statement of faith and to integrate the narrative and expository modes that distinguish the Apologia and autobiography as a genre.

Abstract:
The most transformative moments in life cause us to look both backward (reflection) and inward (introspection). Likewise, reflective and introspective moments in film often align with important plot points. Separating music and dialogue from the rhythms of the image, these moments suspend time, creating a distinct temporality for the character(s) and the viewer to observe the past and the present in juxtaposition. The music of film composer Thomas Newman brings to life some of the most beautiful reflective and introspective moments in cinema. In this thesis, I approach Newman’s understudied, but highly successful film scores from narrative, musical, and audiovisual perspectives. Recognizing time as a linear common denominator between the multimedia elements of film, I examine case study scenes in Little Women (1994), The Shawshank Redemption (1994), and American Beauty (1999). Additionally, I present Kofi Agawu’s method of generative analysis as a tool well-suited to Newman’s unique harmonic language.

Abstract: This research had for purpose to perform an analytical study of the music by composer Thomas Newman and its interaction to filmic narrative. The general principles of music utilization as part of the audiovisual composition were approached. Such principles, in part, were consolidated by the Hollywood tradition. Some theoretical considerations were made, based in texts by authors such as Eisenstein, Claudia Gorbman, Michel Chion, Eisler/Adorno and Roy Prendergast, among others. The study was accomplished from three collaborations of the composer in cinematographic works, taking into account aspects as harmony, melody, rhythm, timbre and form. From the analyzed material a few stylistic characteristics of the composer were pointed out and the results of the interaction between his music and the studied films were evaluated. The work also included synopsis of the approached productions besides the reduced transcriptions of the themes composed by Thomas Newman with the respective analysis within each particular context

Full text
Abstract:
Though generally recognized as a formative force in his philosophy, Thomas Reid’s Newtonianism and his philosophy of science has not received due attention among scholars. My aim is to inaugurate a detailed survey. In ch. 1 it is shown that Reid demarcates physics as against metaphysics and theology, making his brand of Newtonianism different from first generation moral and religious Newtonianism. In ch. 2 it is argued that "Newtonian" is not an apt label on Reid’s call for a Science of the human mind. Neither his practice within the field, nor his methodological views, make lawlike connections the central kind of truth to be discovered. Ch. 3 is devoted to Reid’s account of the 1st and 2nd of Newton’s Regulae Philosophandi, and an ensuing notion of explanation which approaches the deductive-nomological model. It is shown that Reid’s account is very much his own, though presented as an explication of Newton’s intentions. Reid’s dismissive view towards simplicity as a guide in scientific reasoning leans on Bacon’s theory of idols and Reid’s theory of first principles of common sense. Ch 4 concerns hypotheses in connection with Newton’s phrase Hypotheses non fingo. It is argued that Reid does not mind speculation about unobservable or theoretical entities, and that his objections to particular ether theories are scientific rather than principled. Nonetheless, since Reid does not explain the difference between powerful conjecture and established truth, his notion of scientific reasoning remains elusive. Ch 5 concerns Reid’s views on the concept and ontology of forces of attraction. It is argued that Reid takes forces to be physical entities open for empirical enquiry, and that forces are neither active, nor efficient. Finally, Reid’s view of metaphysics is considered, and further differences with early Newtonians emphasised.

Ranganathan, Dhruv. "Gromov-Witten Theory of Blowups of Toric Threefolds." Scholarship @ Claremont, 2012. https://scholarship.claremont.edu/hmc_theses/31.

Full text
Abstract:
We use toric symmetry and blowups to study relationships in the Gromov-Witten theories of $\mathbb{P}^3$ and $\mathbb{P}^1\!\times\!\mathbb{P}^1\!\times\!\mathbb{P}^1$. These two spaces are birationally equivalent via the common blowup space, the permutohedral variety. We prove an equivalence of certain invariants on blowups at only points of $\mathbb{P}^3$ and $\mathbb{P}^1\!\times\!\mathbb{P}^1\!\times\!\mathbb{P}^1$ by showing that these invariants descend from the blowup. Further, the permutohedral variety has nontrivial automorphisms of its cohomology coming from toric symmetry. These symmetries can be forced to descend to the blowups at just points of $\mathbb{P}^3$ and $\mathbb{P}^1\!\times\!\mathbb{P}^1\!\times\!\mathbb{P}^1$. Enumerative consequences are discussed.

Quatro, Michael Angelo. ""The sleep of the spinning top" : masculinity, labor, and subjectivity in Thomas Hardy's Jude the obscure." Thesis, 2011. http://hdl.handle.net/2152/ETD-UT-2011-05-3288.

Full text
Abstract:
This paper explores and interrogates late Victorian anxieties concerning the issues of masculinity and labor, taking Thomas Hardy’s Jude the Obscure as a key text in this discourse. I argue that Hardy, drawing upon his own experiences, offers a meditation on the differing Victorian modes of masculinity outlined and embodied in the thought of John Henry Newman and Thomas Carlyle, and in doing so, constructs a dialectical tension between already outmoded, yet remarkably persistent, answers to the questions and pressures of modernity. Through the use of one of the text’s central images—that of Christminster and its accompanying Gothic architecture—Hardy creates an opposition between an idealized intellectual labor and the earthy reality of manual labor. Both forms—figured in either the heroic and organic terms of Carlyle or the reserved, tradition-bound reaction of Newman—represent the ideal that allows Jude to live, but also the force that leads to his death. Therefore, in the clash between the ideal and real, the dialectic fails to deliver a possible synthesis, and instead spirals restlessly in the darkened gaps of self-negation. At the same time, because the specter of a crude social and biological Darwinism consciously haunts the edges of the story, the dialectic never stops demanding a synthesis if Jude is to discover the grounding for a fully integrated identity or ethics. The central question for Hardy thus becomes one of form: For a modern masculine subjectivity to take hold, external social forms must have a connective vitality with interior dispositions, a proposition that Hardy views as a near impossibility.

Abstract:
For perhaps a decade between 1816 and 1826, Newman counted himself an Evangelical. Precisely what that meant has been obscured by his own later reflections, and by biographers interested more in his spiritual destination than his starting point. This chapter situates Newman within the Anglican Evangelical movement of the 1810s and 20s, a milieu more diverse and integrated into the Church of England than many accounts imply. The first section considers his youthful reading: Thomas Scott, Joseph Milner, and others. The second considers his opinions in the 1820s, arguing that his move away from Evangelicalism was less a reaction against ‘vital religion’ than an intensification of its moralistic, biblicist, and even apocalyptic strands. The third examines the 1830s, arguing that Newman’s assault on ‘the religion of the day’ should not be allowed to obscure his appreciation of holiness wherever it was to be found, or his efforts to harness Evangelical zeal in the Tractarian project.

Abstract:
This chapter examines the Roman Catholic theological receptions of John Henry Newman, whose highly original writings frequently endured sharp criticism and misunderstanding in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. However, during the decades leading up to the Second Vatican Council (1962–5), Newman became a crucial resource for Catholic theologians associated with ‘la nouvelle théologie’ and ‘Transcendental Thomism’. These figures drew heavily on Newman’s works in their search for more satisfying treatments of urgent issues for modern Catholic theology, such as the development of doctrine, the relationship between faith and reason, and justification. In the contemporary setting, Newman’s subtle treatments of these important topics have enormous ongoing significance for Catholic theology.
