Caron, Nathalie. "Thomas Paine : la pensée religieuse." Orléans, 1996. http://www.theses.fr/1996ORLE1020.
Full textThomas Paine's fame is mainly due to the publication of two political pamphlets, "Common sense" in 1776, a plea in favour of the independence of the American colonies, and "Rights of man" in 1791-1792, a defence of the French revolution. His theological writings are not as well-known, although Paine took a deep interest in the religious dimension of his work and actively participated in the organization of the first American deistic society, in 1804-1805. Only in 1794 did he publicize his deistic views. In his "Age of reason", he contended that deism (the belief "in one god, and no more") was the only true religion and that christianisty was, in contrast, based on false principles. To this purpose, he forcefully attacked the Bible. His religious (deistic) and political (republican) approaches were similarly oriented. In both fields, he resorted to the same effective, democratic, iconoclastic style, and endeavoured to demystify church and state in order to reconstruct a new system on simple and rational bases. He was a man of the enlightenment and his foremost object was consequently to lead mankind to happiness, a process which he assumed could only be achieved if man managed to get rid of priests and churches. He claimed that every one should be able to worship god as they wished, yet believed that deism would eventually emerge as the only possible religion of an enlightened humanity

Full textThis research aims to study Thomas Paine\'s writings in order to elaborate philosophically his republican-democratic conception in the context of the Philosophy of Enlightenment and especially in the historical framework of the American and French revolutions of the late eighteen\'s century. This author\'s ambition is precisely to help build a state in which political decisions result from universal suffrage, where all people are progressively integrated into citizenship and have equal rights, a state that by its laical vocation is kept completely independent from all religious influence. His writings, his life and some debates with his contemporaries will be examined in the course of this work.

Full textThis thesis examines three writings of Thomas Paine (1737-1809) elaborated during the French Revolution, which represents the most radical reflections of his religious, political and social thought. In the first place, the pamphlet The Age of Reason will be analyzed, that contains the maximum expression of his religious radicalism, which have had its first part written in 1793 and the second in 1794. Contradicting, on the one hand, to the revealed religions, and, on the other hand, to the dechristianization of the Jacobin period, in this text, deism is presented as the religious face of the coming democracy. Secondly, the text Dissertation on the First Principles of Government will be analyzed, the most complete exposition of his democratic theory, drafted and published in 1795. Contrary to Thermidorian and critical of what Jacobinism was, in this text Paine categorically opposes those who thought private property as a natural right that could be equivalent or even superior to the natural rights of freedom and equality. Finally, the text Agrarian Justice will be analyzed, the maximum expression of its social radicalism, produced in the winter of 1795-1796 (published in 1797). In reaction to both the irreducible liberalism of the Thermidorians and the egalitarian proposals of Graco Babeuf, the text presents itself as a proposal to eradicate poverty without breaking with the principles of what would be liberal politics. This analysis seeks to capture the meaning of Paine\'s thinking in the context of the French Revolution and to discuss the validity of Eric Hobsbawm\'s statement in the Age of Revolutions that Paine, radical in the United States, would be a \"moderate Girondist\" in France. Contrary to current interpretations, this research aims to rethink the figure of Paine, showing his relevance as an interpreter of the French Revolution and as a fundamental name for the history of political, religious and social thought.

Full textIt is during the age of Revolutions that the career of Thomas Paine (1737-1809) as a political writer unfurled. His first significant writing, Common Sense, published in January 1776, put forward a programme which was revolutionary in two ways : he established representative democracy as the only legitimate political regime, and thus, he altered the meaning of the concepts of revolution, constitution and republic, relying on an interpretation of the social contract theory which excluded all monarchical or aristocratic, in a word, hereditary elements from the political sphere. Studying his thought in relation to the theories of his time enables one to get the full measure of its originality. A pioneer, therefore, at the same time liberal and republican, he defended the equality of political rights, especially universal suffrage. His conception of revolution was that of a moderate who did not yield to anarchism or to communism. However, he was more successful in the theorization of revolution than in the historiography of the Revolutions, as Rights of Man notably proves. A foe of royalty, he nonetheless remained faithful to his humanism which led him to ask for the banishment of Louis XVI and his family in America. He was part of the circle of the Girondin thinkers and he was a victim of the Terror, though he escaped the guillotine. In 1802, he went back to the United States, disappointed by his European revolutionary experience, with France groaning under new chains and Great Britain having refused to follow the example of the men of 1789, but his hostility to Edmund Burke's views never ceased, so convinced he remained that the enjoyment of liberty for all was a perpetual political horizon

Full textThe present dissertation introduces an interpretation of Thomas Paine’s THE AGE OF REASON (1794) and Ralph Waldo Emerson’s NATURE (1836) as politico-theoretical tracts that develop normative constructions of democracy. At the core of the analysis lies a comparative and historicist reading of the parameters of these constructions. The thesis informing the analysis posits that both normative constructions of democracy can be made explicit with the aid of the concept of a rhizomatic panopticism. The dissertation develops this concept on the basis of French poststructuralist texts and with theoretical approaches from the sociological field of Surveillance Studies in mind, explaining its relevance for the understanding of democracy during the Early-Republic and Antebellum periods in the USA. Furthermore, the discursive mediation of the introduced concept through the religious vocabularies of Deism, Unitarianism, and Transcendentalism in both tracts receives attention. Finally, a close reading elucidates how the distinct parameters of a rhizomatic panopticism are developed, represented, and discussed in both texts.

Full textThis thesis aims at analyzing the bearings between William Payne Alstons doxastic practice approach and Thomas Reids theory of the intellectual powers of men. After surveying the epistemological concepts of Alston and Reid, one deeply examines the arguments of each other for the reliability of the basic modes of forming beliefs and, after that, one compares both authors. The comparative analysis suggests strong evidence for the claim that the essential elements of basic doxastic practices are rooted in Reids doctrine of intellectual powers. Also, fighting against skepticism concerning the reliability of the belief forming processes we are typically engaged in seems to have been a motivation for the development of both philosophical projects. But we have found important differences between them, especially concerning the role of skepticism, realism and theism as general conditions under which Alstons and Reids epistemological theories were built.
