ABSTRACTThis article uses the evidence of midwifery deliveries to investigate the strengths and shortcomings of parish registers, and to pose questions about infant and maternal mortality. It focuses on the delivery notebooks of Thomas Higgins, a man-midwife of north Shropshire, but also employs comparators from Staffordshire and Yorkshire. The research incorporates a technique for dealing with infants where neither a baptism nor a burial can be found. The findings include rare evidence about rates of stillbirth and maternal mortality, and suggest some adjustments to the assumptions made for c

The immediate responsibility for the spiritual well-being of the parish in the early sixteenth century lay with the priest who had the living. Patrons of church livings were able, however, to influence parochial care by extending their patronage to priests who would be certain to maintain their cures satisfactorily. While the patron had no legal obligation to ensure the proper execution of parochial duties by his appointee, a certain degree of responsibility would be expected of men like Sir Thomas More, who allied themselves with the defence of the clerical estate while denouncing the persona

The Parochial Church Council had passed responsibility for maintaining the churchyard to the Parish Council, which, in turn, had passed it to the District Council. This ambitious Leicestershire parson, already embittered by failure, was humiliated by the Court of High Commission. The seventeenth-century lantern clock in the possession of the Society of Antiquaries of London is shown to be one of the products of the post-Civil War boom in London domestic clockmaking. Its maker Thomas Knifton is found to be one of a close-knit group of house clockmakers working in the Parish of St Margaret's, Lothbury. His relationship with both the Clothworkers' and the Clockmakers' Company is explored. The clock is described, its founder's marks and unique dial-plate noted. The construction of its movement and subsequent alterations are explained in simple terms.

This chapter is an attempt to gauge the theology of the Church of Scotland in the first half of the eighteenth century by considering a representative selection of theological writers of that period. Each of those considered—Thomas Blackwell, Robert Riccaltoun, and Thomas Halyburton—held parish ministries, two them for most of their adult lives, and two of them held chairs of theology. Distinct personalities, each upheld the position of the Westminster Standards con animo. Yet each reveal in their different ways an awareness of changes that the Enlightenment was bringing, calling for adaptation to the literary form of theology, or in its apologetic direction.

The underlying substantive issue in this case was the question of whether the Wallbanks were liable to pay for the repair of their local parish church. However, this case note focuses on the definition of public authorities under s. 6 of the Human Rights Act 1998 (HRA). Public authorities are required to act in accordance with the HRA, and the Wallbanks contended that the Parochial Church Council was a public authority within the meaning of s. 6. The Great Bible, instigated by Thomas Cromwell, edited by Miles Coverdale, and supported by Henry VIII, has often been seen as a monument of reform and authority. This chapter explores the Bible’s materiality to reveal hesitation and tensions in its creation. Its layout and title page reveal Henry’s ambivalence towards Bible reading. Mandated for each parish church in the realm it was nevertheless incompatible with the liturgy performed there, leading to the curbing of Bible reading four years after its introduction.

Abstract:
This is the first of two chapters which examine poor law ‘enabling acts’. This chapter considers the importance of Thomas Gilbert’s Act, passed in 1782. Gilbert’s Act was passed with the intention that those parishes adopting it would place the ‘vulnerable’ sections of the poor within a workhouse and allocate employment and distribute outdoor relief to the able-bodied. The Act also intended to promote industry and good morals amongst the poor, allowing parish officers to require them to work within the workhouse and embark on teaching programmes for children. This chapter examines the adoption of the Act in southern England, and then its implementation. As the eighteenth century drew to a close, and the pursuit of more economical modes of relieving the poor became ever more important, the Act was adapted in ways which could have actually contradicted Gilbert’s intentions.

This chapter focuses on epidemics in New England before 1780. Barker describes his move from Barnstable, Massachusetts, to Gorham, Maine, with information about the town, dietary habits, and physicians in Cumberland County. He cites the diary of the Reverend Thomas Smith, who began his ministerial duties at the First Parish Church in Falmouth (Portland) in 1727 and cared for his parishioner’s medical as well as spiritual needs, keeping a diary of diseases and epidemics beginning in 1735. Diary entries describe the severe epidemic of throat distemper, also known as cynache maligna or putrid sore throat, in 1735, with recurrences in 1754, 1784, and 1801–1802. Various treatments including the use of blistering are discussed, as well as the use of mercury (calomel) in a long excerpt from John Warren’s article, “View of mercurial practice” published in the New England Journal of Medicine in 1813.
