We consider a thermoelastic theory where the heat conduction is described by the Moore–Gibson–Thompson equation. In fact, this equation can be obtained after the introduction of a relaxation parameter in the Green–Naghdi type III model. We analyse the one- and three-dimensional cases. In three dimensions, we obtain the well-posedness and the stability of solutions. In one dimension, we obtain the exponential decay and the instability of the solutions depending on the conditions over the system of constitutive parameters. We also propose possible extensions for these theories.

Goodhue and Thompson (1995) proposed the Technology-to-Performance Chain (TPC) model in 1995 to help end-users and organizations understand and make more effective use of information technology. The TPC model combines insights from research on user attitudes as predictors of utilization and insights from research on task-technology fit as a predictor of performance. In this chapter, the TPC model was tested in two settings—voluntary use and mandatory use. In both settings, strong support was found for the impact of task-technology fit on performance as well as on attitudes and beliefs about use. Social norms also had a significant impact on utilization in the mandatory use setting. Beliefs about use only had a significant impact on utilization in the voluntary use setting. Overall, the results found support for the predictive power of the TPC model; however, the results show that the relationships among the constructs in the model will vary, depending on whether or not the users have a choice to use the system.

This chapter analyzes the impacts of intranet quality on organizational capital practices. The chapter describes a research model empirically tested in 98 large Brazilian organizations. The variables proposed by the TAM (technology acceptance model) (Venkatesh &amp; Davis, 2000) and the TTF (task technology fit) (Goodhue &amp; Thompson, 1995) were converted into portal’s context, emphasizing the importance of leveraging classical information science and information system studies to understand better the portal phenomenon. Furthermore, the knowing organization model (Choo, 1998) was applied in order to offer a theoretical support for the intellectual capital-based variables. The results give evidence that the portal quality has more influence on knowledge creation than on sense-making and decision-making. The chapter reinforces the usage of the Knowing Organization model as a framework to understand intellectual capital and knowledge management initiatives.

Having derived a set of equations describing the equilibrium state of a multicomponent system and devised a scheme for solving them, we can begin to model the chemistries of natural waters. In this chapter we construct four models, each posing special challenges, and look in detail at the meaning of the calculation results. In each case, we use program REACT and employ an extended form of the Debye-Hückel equation for calculating species' activity coefficients, as discussed in Chapter 7. In running REACT, you work interactively following the general procedure: • Swap into the basis any needed species, minerals, or gases. Table 6.1 shows the basis in its original configuration (as it exists when you start the program). You might want to change the basis by replacing SiO2(aq) with quartz so that equilibrium with this mineral can be used to constrain the model. Or to set a fugacity buffer you might swap CO2(g) for either H+ or HCO-3. • Set a constraint for each basis member that you want to include in the calculation. For instance, the constraint might be the total concentration of sodium in the fluid, the free mass of a mineral, or the fugacity of a gas. You may also set temperature (25°C, by default) or special program options. • Run the program by typing go. • Revise the basis or constraints and reexecute the program as often as you wish. In this book, input scripts for running the various programs are set in a "typewriter" typeface. Unless a script is marked as a continuation of the previous script, you should start the program anew or type reset to clear your previous configuration. For a first chemical model, we calculate the distribution of species in surface seawater, a problem first undertaken by Garrels and Thompson (1962; see also Thompson, 1992). We base our calculation on the major element composition of seawater (Table 6.2), as determined by chemical analysis. To set pH, we assume equilibrium with CO2 in the atmosphere (Table 6.3).

Music is often employed as a therapeutic tool for individuals with dementia, facilitating memory recall, fluent speech and recovery of other cognitive and noncognitive abilities. There are several current discussions of the mechanisms that underlie these therapeutic effects, but no integrative model that can account for the benefits of music on multiple levels of analysis. Thompson and Schlaug (2015) proposed that seven capacities of music may be especially relevant to its therapeutic value for a range of neurological conditions; namely, that music is persuasive, engaging, emotional, personal, physical, and social, and that it encourages synchronization in rhythm and pitch. This chapter elaborates on this model by considering how each of these seven attributes of music has therapeutic benefits for people with dementia.

Public key infrastructures (PKI) are now in place in a number of organizations and there is a vast amount of material available that can be used to obtain familiarisation with the concept (Adams &amp; Lloyd, 2002; Raina, 2003). Although related to PKI, privilege management infrastructure (PMI) is a more recent development in the network security field. PMI has been designed to supply the authorization function lacking in the PKI model. This article will provide an overview of PMI, will provide a number of examples of present PMI architectures, such as PERMIS (Chadwick, Zhao, Otenko, Laborde, Su, &amp; Nguyen, 2006), AKENTI (Thompson, Essari, &amp; Mudumbai, 2003), and Shibboleth (Carmody, 2001), and will provide some examples of practical PMI usage.

Abstract:
This chapter discusses how Craig Thompson’s Habibi (2011) constructs the oriental sacred through Arabic calligraphy, weaving sacrality into the visual and textual narrative of the imagined, exotic other. The exotic and even erotic forms of calligraphy stylize a natural and imminently accessible sacred that works within an oriental mode of visual exposure. We can see this oriental sacred in the natural landscape, in the mythic and salvific animals, in the Islamic textual traditions of hadiths and Qur’an, and in the material body of Dodola who captures the young Zam’s erotic fantasies. Thompson deploys calligraphy to open Islamic and Arabic culture to the oriental gaze, imagining the sacred within the imagined world of Richard Burton’s 1,001 Arabian Nights. Within this space and gaze, Arabic calligraphy takes on the form and function of the sacred orient.
