Abstract:
Current guidelines for assessing the fluid status of patients with heart failure include subjective physical findings, which often occur late in decompensation, and objective pulmonary artery catheter measurements, whose use is controversial in patients with heart failure. Impedance cardiography, which assesses cardiac function by measuring the opposition to an alternating electric current in the thorax, indicates the amount of fluid in the thorax. It is used externally by employing electrodes on the thorax but can also be used internally by electrodes within a cardiac pacemaker. Recent studies have suggested that one of its direct measurements, thoracic impedance, may identify patients at risk for decompensation of heart failure, but because these measurements inconsistently correlate with pulmonary artery catheter measurements and study sample sizes are small, further research is required before its use can be recommended.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Thoracic insufficiency syndrome is the inability of the thorax to support normal respiration or lung growth. One treatment to address the thoracic deformities associated with the syndrome is placement of a vertical expandable prosthetic titanium rib. The goal is to restore thoracic volume, symmetry, and function and to allow for growth of the thorax in skeletally immature children. The main topics include indications for placement of a titanium rib, postoperative nursing care, potential complications, long-term follow-up, quality-of-life issues, and implications for critical care nurses and advanced practice nurses. Abstract:
Cowboy’s story reminds us that the care of the dying is best done in community. His increasing vulnerability is an uncomfortable reminder that we, too, may someday be dependent upon others to meet our needs. Despite our attempts to distance ourselves from the dying, we each may all too soon find ourselves alienated and marginalized in the very institutional “system” that at present so poorly cares for others. Cowboy is a reminder that we, too, may one day have to rely upon others for compassionate and competent care that is reliably delivered. Cowboy’s story calls us to action, for in designing a system that will reliably meet his needs, we are also taking steps to better ensure that our own needs will be met when our time comes.

Abstract:
AbstractThis chapter focuses on Harrison’s life prior to writing Animal Machines. Together with her siblings, Harrison was brought up in close contact to Britain’s cultural elite. After attending schools in London, Harrison commenced her university studies in 1939. The outbreak of war had a transformative impact on her life. Harrison was evacuated to Cambridge where she likely came into contact with ethologist William Homan Thorpe. She converted to Quakerism and subsequently enrolled in the Friends’ Ambulance Unit. The Quaker principles of non-violence, humanitarianism, and bearing witness to injustice would serve as important reference points throughout Harrison’s campaigning. After the war, she completed her studies in the dramatic arts but abandoned a potential career as a theatre producer. In 1954, she married architect Dexter Harrison. Similar to many Quakers, Harrison’s humanitarian concerns motivated her to become involved in the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament and protest perceived technological, moral, and environmental threats to society.

Abstract:
Boyd is best known for his debut novel, Through the Wheat, which is typically thought of as an anti-war modernist work. However, I argue, Boyd’s novel is, in fact, a more ambiguous take on World War I experience. Moreover, his war writing evolved in relation to his career trajectory, as reflected in Boyd’s need to write World War I magazine fiction and his attempt at Hollywood screenwriting on a World War I project. Toward the end of his life, Boyd turned to communism, which influenced his commentary on the war in In Time of Peace, his proletarian bildungsroman sequel to Through the Wheat.

In ASME 2020 International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition. American Society of Mechanical Engineers, 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.1115/imece2020-23611.

Full text
Abstract:
Abstract Lead vehicle stopped crashes are a top contributor to traffic and health care expenditures out of NHTSA’s 37 pre-crash scenarios. It is important to better understand how these crashes occur, so that evolving autonomous vehicle technologies may be tailored towards injury mitigation in crash-imminent scenarios. Additionally, as autonomous vehicle technologies increase in prevalence and usage, out of position seating and distracted driving behavior may also increase. In order to analyze injury patterns in real-world lead vehicle stopped crashes, the public portal of Crash Injury Research Engineering Network (CIREN) was surveyed for lead vehicle stopped impacts. The review found that, of all the body regions, the thorax and lower extremity body regions frequently sustained AIS 3+ injuries (P < 0.01). Additionally, the upper extremity frequently sustained AID 3+ injuries in some scenarios. Steering wheel contact (often times through a deployed air bag) was the source of 62% of the thorax injuries and the knee bolster was the source of 76% of the lower extremity injuries. Truck impacts, and complicated crashes accounted for over 50% of the cases in the cohort. Automated vehicle behaviors have the potential to augment passive and active safety systems to potentially decrease the occurrence of AIS 3+ injuries by improving a vehicle’s response to lead vehicle stopped, crash imminent scenarios.
