We remember childhood injustices for the rest of our lives. They are thorn-like memories, piercing and immediate, affecting us long after we have matured and moved on with our lives. The wounds of childhood have been written about by some of literature's greatest writers, including most notably James Joyce, in his masterpiece A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. In this creative work I try to investigate, through the voices of children, the role of wounds in the growing character of a child. Wounds both literal and metaphorical dominate the narrative, which is told from a variety of perspectives as one group of friends from one neighborhood advance through elementary school. My goal in this work is to portray the painfully observant nature of children — to show how much they absorb in the early years of their lives, the scope of which adults might not realize. I also try to capture the humor and tragedy of children's voices, and to create a whole world as seen through the eyes of children

Despite being a popular tool for counterinsurgency, the literature on pro-government militias remain divided. One strand focuses on the security benefits that the militias bring, while the other argues that they generate a political backlash. Using India's counterinsurgency campaigns in Kashmir and Chhattisgarh, I test a wide variety of hypotheses generated from the literature.

Abstract:
Digital credentials enable users to perform secure interactions by proving either their identity or that they posses certain attributes. Special care is taken to protect these credentials and their associated private keys during transaction time. However, protection of these items outside of the transaction is often delegated to a secure credential repository. A mobile environment creates significant challenges for secure repositories. We examine these challenges with respect to existing repository practices and produce a set of requirements that a repository must meet in order to cope with the harshness of a mobile environment. We also present the design and implementation of Thor (The hybrid online repository), a system that fulfills these requirements. Thor leverages preexisting local and remote repositories and enhances their usability and security through centralized management, credential context subsets, and credential identifier obfuscation.

This thesis outlines the implementation of the United States Special Operations Command THOR3 (Tactical Human Optimization, Rapid Rehabilitation and Reconditioning) Program into the Special Operations (SOF) community. This study returns to basics by focusing on the irreplaceable human element of SOF operations and identifies specific steps to prepare the human weapons system for the variety of SOF challenges it faces. Specifically, the study analyzed program design considerations and methods to better educate, train, and monitor SOF Soldier physical development and, when required, to recondition and rehabilitate SOF individuals back to full operational status after an injury.

The aim of this work is to present a proof of the Hitchin-Thorpe and Miyaoka-Yau inequalities. First we provide an orthogonal decomposition for the curvature tensor, and then we show how the curvature operator can be defined from the curvature tensor. In order to fulfill the proposed objective, we prove the Gauss-Bonnet Theorem in dimension 4, to do this we use a result due Allendoerfer and we present an integral formula for the Euler characteristic computation on a Riemannian 4-manifold. Furthermore, we define the concept of signature in a Riemannian manifold e we exhibit an integral formula for the achievement of this object, for this we use the Hirzebruch Signature Theorem in di- mension 4 and the Chern-Weil Theory which provides us a connection between algebraic topology and differential geometry. Finally, we show how the earlier formulas can be used in the demonstration of the initial inequalities.
O objetivo desse trabalho é fornecer uma demonstraçao para as desigualdades de Hitchin-Thorpe e Miyaoka-Yau. Inicialmente forneceremos uma decomposição ortogonal para o tensor curvatura, em seguida mostraremos como o operador curvatura pode ser definido a partir do tensor curvatura. Com o intuito de cumprir o objetivo proposto, iremos provar o Teorema de Gauss-Bonnet em dimensão 4, para isso utilizaremos um resultado devido a Allendoerfer e forneceremos uma fórmula integral para o cálculo da característica de Euler de uma variedade Riemanniana de dimensão 4. Além disso, definiremos o conceito de assinatura em uma variedade Riemanniana e exibiremos uma fórmula integral para a obtenção deste objeto, para isso utilizaremos o Teorema de Assinatura de Hirzebruch em dimensão 4 e pouco da Teoria de Chern-Weil que nos fornece uma conexão entre a topologia algébrica e a geometria diferencial. Por fim, mostraremos como as fórmulas que foram obtidas podem ser utilizadas na demonstraçao das desigualdades citadas inicialmente.

Abstract:
Denna uppsats syftar till att göra en religionsvetenskaplig analys av filmen Thor från 2011. De grundläggande metoderna som använts i arbetet är en diskursanalysmetod som är influerad av Simon Lindgrens populärkulturella arbetsfält, och en komparativ studie av Joseph Campbells teoriom monomyten. Våra tolkningar och arbetet kommer fram till att Thor passar in i Campbells teori om monomyten. This essay aims to make a religious scientific based analysis of the movie Thor from 2011. The basic methods used in this work are a discourse analysis, influenced by Simon Lindgren’s popular culture field of expertise, and a comparative study of Joseph Campbell's theory of the monomyth. Our interpretations and this work concludes that Thor fits into Campbell's theory of the monomyth. The results imply that Campbell's theory proves to be applicable in modern times narration on film. Events and actors in the film fit with several elementary parts in a hero-myth according to Campbell.

L'oeuvre romanesque de l'écrivain britannique Adam Thorpe est fracturée aussi bien que structurée par la notion d'écart entre le témoin et ce que nous appelons les 'pré-Histoire(s)'. Ce travail, prenant appui sur la notion d'écart, étudie la dialectique entre fracture et suture, en montrant son extension à la narrativité, la subjectivité et l'historicité. Face à une oeuvre qui n'a de cesse d'interroger la question de la limite dans un effort constant de faire dialoguer la disjonction avec la conjonction, la déliaison avec la reliaison, notamment entre les bribes et les lacunes de la petite et de la grande Histoire, le but de cette thèse est d'introduire la figure du témoin, entendu ici dans un sens littéraire, philosophique et anthropologique afin de mettre en lumière la précarité de la relationnalité
British writer Adam Thorpe's fiction is fractured as well as structured by the notion of gap between the subject and what we decided to call the 'pre-Histories'. This work, relying on the notion of interval, examines the dialectics between fracture and suture, showing its extension to narrativity, subjectivity and historicity. Faced with a work that keeps interrogating the question of the limit in a ceaseless effort to combine disjunction with conjonction, disconnection with reconnection, especially between the fragments and silences of the small and big history, the purpose of this thesis is to introduce the figure of the witness, understood here in a literary, philosophical and anthropological sense in order to shed light on the precariousness of relationality

Abstract:
There is a conflict on the island of Rota in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands between conservationists and the cultural traditions of Chamorro inhabitants. The traditional model of broadcasting media to a wide audience is not effective in intervening in environmental conflicts within indigenous communities compared to an emerging model of filmmaking that embraces local voices and perspectives. Historically, indigenous depictions in media tend to misrepresent "Others" in order to reinforce the imperialist interests of Western society. Within this essay I intend to analyze how Western media suppresses indigenous voice while investigating strategies for the creation of effective environmental films targeted towards specific local audiences. Awareness of the mistakes of filmmakers of the past combined with the availability of inexpensive production and distribution technologies will allow alternative models of filmmaking to portray a diversity of perspectives. Environmental films that feature indigenous voices allow local communities to define and strengthen their own cultural values while creating texts that broaden global understandings of the diversity of the human experience.

Abstract:
Today, companies face constant challenges, as the business must constantly be developed in order to compete. As new ports are being built in already existing ones, other opportunities are often made available to develop further and reduce costs and risks. Replacing some labour against automation is one of them. The study aims to ensure the risks of using selfdriving vehicles for the movement of containers in port areas. The work has been carried out at SCA in Tunadal for their new coming terminal. The aim of the study was to examine the risk associated with manpower versus self-driving vehicles exist. If, based on a safety aspect, it is profitable to go towards a more automated business. To carry out the study, documents have been collected describing the accidents in the port, two persons who are extra responsible for the accidents in the port have been interviewed and observations have been made to also see how the self-driving vehicle is to be applied to reality. When processing the data, THERP - Technique for human error rate prediction has been used for mapping the current situation. FMEA - failure mode and effects analysis and FTA - Fault tree analysis has been used to map the future situation with automation. The result shows that from a safety perspective, it is safest to use self-driving vehicles, as it is the human slips that represent the greatest risks in port areas.
Idag står företag för ständiga utmaningar då verksamheten hela tiden måste utvecklas för att kunna konkurrera. Då nya hamnar byggs i redan befintlig tas ofta andra möjligheter i förfogande för att utvecklas ytterligare och minska på kostnader och risker. Att byta ut viss arbetskraft mot automation är en av dem. Studien syftar till att se till riskerna med att använda självkörande fordon för förflyttning av containrar i hamnområden. Arbetet har genomförts hos SCA i Tunadal för deras nya kommande terminal. Målet med studien var att se till de risker som finns med att använda arbetskraft kontra självkörande fordon. Om det utifrån en säkerhetsaspekt är lönsamt att gå mot en mer automatiserad verksamhet. För att utföra studien har dokument samlats in som beskriver olyckorna i hamnen, två personer som är extra ansvariga för olyckorna i hamnen har intervjuats och observationer har gjorts för att också se till hur det självkörande fordonet ska appliceras på verkligheten. Vid bearbetning av data har THERP - Technique for human error rate prediction använts för kartläggning av nuläget. FMEA - failure mode and effects analysis och FTA - Fault tree analysis har använts för att kartlägga det framtida läget med automation. Resultatet visar att det ur ett säkerhetsperspektiv är säkrast att använda sig av självkörande fordon då det är de mänskliga snedstegen som står för de största riskerna i hamnområden.

Abstract:
Sweden is a country that has made some progress in developing energy efficient solutions. The problem in Sweden is that many houses and apartment buildings are old and have inefficient ventilation- and heating systems. This energy is lost when systems are inefficient, which then results in huge economic costs. Luckily, more and more people are becoming aware of this, which means that Sweden is on track to become even better within energy efficiency.Energy use for the housing- and service sector amounts to 166 TWh of total use at 616 TWh. Without distribution and conversion losses, these figures show that the housing- and service sector accounts for almost 40 % of the country's total energy consumption. As a part of this sector, there is in downtown Umeå a building complex named Thor that is contributing significantly to the energy consumption of the area. Thor is a building complex whose first phase of construction began in 1963 and has since then been built on over the years. The complex has several inefficient parts that waste energy and thus gives rise to substantial economic costs. In the Thor-building there are numerous venues in place with a large variety of stores. On the groundfloor there are some business premises. The rest of the houses consist of either offices- or apartment spaces. This gives rise to large air handling units and heating systems that must be able to deliver suffiecient power when required.This work is an investigation of the building complex Thor and its purpose is to find parts that are inefficient energy-wise and be able to provide suggestions for various improvements that would reduce costs and create profit with a short payback time.The investigated parts are the following: • Roof insulation • Exhaust fan to the loading bay • Supply and exhaust fans, "Tower" • Supply and exhaust fans, Kungsgatan 58 • Comfort Cooling • Heating coils • Main fuses The energy consumption for the different areas have been divided into two different parts, electricity- and heat consumption. Electricity consumption is roughly 500 MWh per year and the heat consumption is around 1020 MWh per year. This is only the consumption of the areas that have been investigated. After the energy efficient actions will be made, the heat use will instead decrease to 213 MWh, which is a considerable improvement. Electricity consumption after the actions will increase, but because of the economical electricity agreement Thor possesses, it will ultimately pay off. Straight pay off for heat exchangers in the "Tower" and the supply- and exhaust fans at Kungsgatan 58 is 2,09 year and 2,11 years respectively.This proves that large amounts of energy are lost to the surroundings, and that there is a big need of change.   A future project is to improve energy efficiency throughout the majority in large parts of Thor, so that one saves money rather than "blowing" it away. Riksbyggen was unsure if there were ventilation aggregates large enough to clear off the necessary volume flows at Kungsgatan 58. This report proved that they did in fact exist. The result of this report bodes well for future efforts to improve energy efficiency at Thor. This report can serve as a basis for future work.
Sverige är ett land som har kommit en bit i utvecklingen gällande energieffektiva lösningar. Problemet i Sverige är att många villor och flerbostadshus är gamla och har ineffektiva ventilation- och värmesystem. Denna energi går förlorad när systemen är ineffektiva vilket sedan resulterar i stora ekonomiska kostnader. Som tur är har fler och fler fått upp ögonen för detta vilket gör att Sverige är på god väg att bli ännu mer energieffektiva.   Energianvändningen för bostads- och servicedelen uppgår till 166 TWh av landets totala användning på 616 TWh. Dessa siffror visar att bostads- och servicedelen står för nästan 40 % av landets totala energianvändning. Inom denna faktor har ett område i Umeå stad ”dragit sitt strå i stacken” av användingen och detta område heter Thor. Thor är en bostadsrättsförening och började byggas 1963 och sedan byggts på under årens lopp. Området har flera ineffektiva delar som slösar energi och detta ger upphov till stora ekonomiska kostnader. De hus som finns på plats idag har olika typer av lokaler. På bottenvåningarna finns affärslokaler och resten av husen består av antingen kontorslokaler eller lägenheter. Detta ger upphov till stora ventilationsaggregat och värmesystem som ska klara att leverera rätt effekt när det behövs.   Detta arbete är en utredning av området för att hitta delar som är ineffektiva och för att sedan kunna ge förslag på olika förbättringar som skulle minska framförallt energi, kostnader och skapa vinst inom kort. De delar som har undersökts är: Takisolering Frånluftsfläkt till lastbrygga Till- och frånluftsfläktar, ”Tornet” Till- och frånluftsfläktar, Kungsgatan 58 Komfortkyla Värmeslingor Huvudsäkringar     Energiförbrukningen för de olika områdena har delats in i två olika delar, Elförbrukning och Värmeförbrukning. Elförbrukning hamnar på 529 MWh per år och värmeförbrukningen hamnar på 1020 MWh per år. Detta är då enbart för de områden som har utretts. Efter energieffektivisering av dessa så hamnar värmeanvändningen istället på 213 MWh vilket är betydligt mindre. Elförbrukningen kommer att höjas efter installation av aggregaten, men på grund av elpriserna som bostadsrättsföreningen har så kommer det löna sig relativt fort. Rak payofftid för värmeväxlare på ”Tornet” och till- och frånluftsfläktarna på Kungsgatan 58 ligger på vardera område på cirka 2 år. Detta är då ett bevis på att stora mängder energi går förlorad på detta område och därmed är det i stort behov av förändring   Ett framtida arbete är att energieffektivisera på stora delar av Thor så man sparar pengar och energi istället för att ”blåsa” bort dem. Riksbyggen var osäkra om det fanns aggregat som klarade flödena på Kungsgatan 58, vilket denna rapport bevisade. Resultaten från denna rapport bådar gott för framtida arbete för att energieffektivisera Thor. Denna rapport kan då ligga som grund till arbetet.

Les blessures de l'abdomen représentent une faible proportion (5%) des blessures lors d'accidents de la route mais elle augmente fortement pour les blessures sérieuses à sévères (16%). L'abdomen du mannequin THOR (Test Device for Human Occupant Restraint), destiné aux futures réglementations de choc frontal, nécessite des améliorations de sa biofidélité et un critère de blessure. Le travail présenté est en trois parties :Premièrement, les paramètres principaux de la réponse mécanique de l'abdomen du THOR et de Sujets Humain Post Mortem (SHPM) sous chargements impacteur et ceinture furent identifiés à l'aide d'un modèle mécanique simplifié. La comparaison des paramètres mécaniques du THOR et des SHPM a mis en évidence les changements nécessaires pour l'amélioration de la biofidélité. Il apparaît que la viscosité équivalente du THOR doit être augmentée d'un facteur 5 et que l'interaction avec la pièce bassin doit être modifiée du fait qu'elle augmentait la rigidité d'un facteur 8. Ces changements furent inclus dans le modèle Éléments Finis (EF) d'un abdomen prototype incluant des capteurs de pression APTS (Abdominal Pressure Twin Sensors) pour caractériser le chargement de l'abdomen.Deuxièmement, la réponse mécanique du prototype a été évaluée en simulations d'essais charriot, ce qui a montré que l'abdomen prototype a peu d'influence sur la cinématique globale du mannequin mais que la flexion du tronc peut faire augmenter la pression dans les APTS. Cela a mené à des recommandations supplémentaires au niveau de la conception de l'abdomen.Finalement, en vue de définir un critère de blessure pour l'abdomen, la pression des APTS a été corrélée aux blessures des organes décrites dans les études sur SHPM de la littérature ou prédites par le modèle EF humain THUMS
Abdominal injuries represent a small proportion (5%) of road crash injuries but their proportion increases considerably with regard to serious and severe injuries (16%). The abdomen of the Test device for Human Occupant Restraint (THOR), intended to be used in future frontal impact assessments, needs further developments regarding its biofidelity and injury criterion. The work performed in this thesis project was in three folds: Firstly, the main parameters of the THOR and Post Mortem Human Subjects (PMHS) abdomen responses under impactor and seatbelt loadings were identified using a lumped element model. The comparison between the THOR and the PMHS mechanical parameters highlighted desired changes for THOR abdomen biofidelity improvement. It was found that THOR material viscosity should be increased by 5 and that interaction with the pelvis flesh should be modified as it increased by 8 the abdomen stiffness. These changes were included in the Finite Element (FE) model of an existing abdomen prototype which is equipped with Abdominal Pressure Twin Sensors (APTS) to quantify the abdomen load. Secondly, the response of the prototype was evaluated in sled test simulations which showed that the prototype abdomen had little influence on the dummy overall kinematics but that the torso flexion could increase the pressure in the APTS. This led to additional recommendations regarding the abdomen design. Finally, for the abdominal injury criterion definition, the APTS pressure was correlated with organ injuries as reported in published PMHS tests or as predicted by THUMS human FE model

The widely-recognised crisis of Englishness in the 1980s and 1990s has generally been explained as a response to the end of empire. If the place of memories of the First and Second World Wars in this crisis has been considered at all, these have generally been assumed to support a nostalgic version of English or British national identity. Taking three contemporary British novelists-Graham Swift, Pat Barker and Adam Thorpe-as examples, however, this thesis argues that the late-twentiethcentury memory of these conflicts is strikingly ambivalent, and that the contemporary crisis of Englishness must be understood not only as postcolonial, but also, in a strong sense, as postwar. The Introduction sets out the parameters of critical discussion of latetwentieth-century Englishness to date and explains my use of the term 'postwar', as marking the continuing cultural legacy of the world wars, and the process of interrogative re-reading of that legacy undertaken in the contemporary fiction I discuss. It also challenges the assumption that 'nostalgia' and a 'healthy' attitude to the past can necessarily be easily distinguished, through a discussion of postFreudian psychoanalytic approaches to mourning and melancholia. Chapter One considers three writers of the early to mid-twentieth century, Siegfried Sassoon, J. B.Priestley, and Elizabeth Bowen, in order to suggest the nature of the questions about Englishness, war and violence which re-emerge with the breakdown of Britain's postwar social and political consensus from the mid-1970s onward. Chapter Two then discusses Graham Swift's early novels, The Sweet Shop Owner, Shuttlecock and Waterland, arguing that critical attention to his metafictional concerns in Waterland has meant that his interest in suburban English life as encrypting memories of war has been overlooked. Chapter Three proceeds to Pat Barker's The Regeneration Trilogy, charting a two-way process of haunting through which contemporary concerns with violence are read back into the historical and literary record of the First World War, and simultaneously seem to re-emerge in the present as the return of the violence underpinning a melancholic cultural attachment to the very English narrative of 'doomed youth'. My discussion in Chapter Four of Adam Thorpe's novels Ulverton, Still and Pieces of Light emphasises their exploration of the violence at the heart of the 'deep England' evoked in heritage representations of Englishness. I suggest, however, that Thorpe's attempts to find appropriate fictional forms for ambivalence and melancholia are at times closer to paralysed repetitions than to interrogations of Englishness. My argument concludes with a reading of Swift's Last Orders, which I contend enacts the beginnings of a movement beyond the wartime end of a certain England and Englishness. Its misreading by critics as parochial and nostalgic, I suggest, indicates the extent of critical misunderstanding of the troubled memory of the world wars in contemporary Britain. It also testifies to the difficulty and the necessity of the creative and critical work on postwar Englishness undertaken by the writers considered in this study.
