Abstract:
BNFL is an international company offering a nuclear fuel service. BNFL owns and operates facilities for the storage and reprocessing of irradiated fuel, and treatment of wastes arising, at the Sellafield site in West Cumbria. In 1974, BNFL announced its intention to undertake the Company's largest ever project, the provision of a new, integrated, reprocessing facility known as THORP (Thermal Oxide Reprocessing Plant). The purpose of THORP is to recover uranium and plutonium from spent oxide fuel that has been irradiated in nuclear reactors used for the generation of electricity. The plant has been designed to high standards to avoid jeopardising the safety of any person on or off site as a result of its operation. This paper provides an overview of the project outlining some of the major aspects, encompassing the history of the project, environmental impact, safeguards/accountancy, commercial information, the use of the products in mixed oxide fuel and the development of the THORP workforce. It concludes that the large investment made in plant, equipment and people, will ensure that the radiological impact of THORP's operations on the environment is insignificant, and that as the radioactive commissioning of THORP is proceeding successfully, that there is increasing confidence within, and external to, BNFL that THORP will be a commercial and environmental success for Britain.

Abstract:
E. Thorp introduced the following card shuffling model. Suppose the number of cards is even. Cut the deck into two equal piles, then interleave them as follows. Choose the first card from the left pile or from the right pile according to the outcome of a fair coin flip. Then choose from the other pile. Continue this way, flipping an independent coin for each pair, until both piles are empty. We prove an upper bound of O(d3) for the mixing time of the Thorp shuffle with 2d cards, improving on the best known bound of O(d4). As a consequence, we obtain an improved bound on the time required to encrypt a binary message of length d using the Thorp shuffle.

Abstract:
This issue features two original research articles, three issues & policy articles and a book review section. The lead article is by Geoffrey Kingston and Susan Thorp (University of New South Wales, Australia) and addresses the issue of Annuitization and asset allocation with HARA utility. One of the puzzles in retirement economics is why individuals do not choose to purchase annuities and Kingston and Thorp explore in detail a real options model in which individual preferences obey the broad class of hyperbolic absolute risk aversion utility. The theory of Real Options argues that people might want to delay annuitisation at relatively younger ages because the price of life annuities might improve and annuitisation is irreversible. However, Kingston and Thorp show that the implications of a Real Options approach varies across individuals considerably. For example, when individuals have a desired consumption floor as opposed to CRRA preferences, they are more likely to want to purchase annuities earlier than later. It would be interesting to see empirical tests done in this area to test the relatively new Real Options theory as it applies to irreversible personal financial decisions, such as annuitization.

Abstract:
We have recently assessed phenotypic and genotypic diversity within an aggregation of the intertidal beadlet anemone, Actinia equina L., located at Burniston in N. Yorkshire, on the east coast of Britain (Quicke & Brace, 1983). The study was undertaken in order to provide information relating to the role of intraspecific aggression (Bonnin, 1964; Brace & Pavey, 1978; Brace, Pavey & Quicke, 1979) in modifying the spacing of individuals. Limited work on the genus Actinia (A. tenebrosa Farquhar) has already indicated that whilst genetically dissimilar anemones display aggression towards one another, auto-genotypic aggression is minimal (Ayre, 1982), as is also the case for the clonal anemone, Anthopleura elegantissima (Brandt) (Francis, 1973a,b,1976). We therefore anticipated that aggressive interactions would promote auto-genotypic clustering, initiated by the local settlement of the asexually produced, brooded young (Carter & Thorp, 1979; Gashout & Ormond, 1979; Orr, Thorpe & Carter, 1982), and that correspondingly, genetic diversity within aggregations of anemones would be low.

Abstract:
Colonization of the littoral zone presents many problems to both sessile and relatively sessile invertebrates. These may be especially acute for inhabitants of the upper reaches of this zone, since suitable niches are usually sparsely distributed there, and are often ephemeral in nature. Consequently, both intraand inter-specific competition for space is likely to be particularly intense. The widely distributed and abundant, beadlet anemone, Actinia equina L., in common with a number of other littoral anthozoans, is apparently capable of both asexual (apomixis or somatic embryogenesis; Polteva, 1963; Gashout & Ormond, 1979; Orr, Thorpe & Carter, 1982) and sexual (Carter & Thorp, 1979) reproduction. The former results in the production of young, which are brooded within the coelenteron and which appear most suited to local dispersal, whilst the latter, if it occurs, is assumed to involve either ovipary or larvipary followed by a planktonic phase. Study of this species therefore affords an opportunity to investigate the dynamics of colonization and dispersal in an heterogeneous environment, in relation to flexibility in reproductive tactics.

Abstract:
Although intraspecific aggression in the anemone, Actinia equina L. has been behaviourally well characterized in laboratory-based studies (Bonnin, 1964; Brace & Pavey, 1978; Brace, Pavey & Quicke, 1979), both its incidence and functional role on the shore have remained obscure. Since A. equina broods young, which are produced asexually (Carter & Thorp, 1979; Gashout & Ormond, 1979; Orr, Thorpe & Carter, 1982) and which appear best suited to local dispersal, we have previously postulated that aggression is likely to be primarily directed towards maintaining ‘territorial’ space for settling syngeneic offspring (Quicke & Brace, 1983; Brace & Quicke, 1985). As such, this postulated role is functionally analogous to that provided by aggression in the clonally reproducing anemone, Anthopleura elegantissima Brandt, in which it serves to maintain the integrity of clonal boundaries (Francis, 1973, 1976), thereby presumably also facilitating the competitive expansion of those boundaries. Work by Ayre (1983) on the Australian anemone, Actinia tenebrosa Farquhar appears to support this contention, for both local settlement and genotypic clustering were detected within aggregations.

Abstract:
AbstractThe first comprehensive assessment of the dissolution kinetics of simulant Magnox–ThORP blended UK high-level waste glass, obtained by performing a range of single-pass flow-through experiments, is reported here. Inherent forward rates of glass dissolution were determined over a temperature range of 23 to 70°C and an alkaline pH range of 8.0 to 12.0. Linear regression techniques were applied to the TST kinetic rate law to obtain fundamental parameters necessary to model the dissolution kinetics of UK high-level waste glass (the activation energy (Ea), pH power law coefficient (η) and the intrinsic rate constant (k0)), which is of importance to the post-closure safety case for the geological disposal of vitreous products. The activation energies based on B release ranged from 55 ± 3 to 83 ± 9 kJ mol–1, indicating that Magnox–THORP blend glass dissolution has a surface-controlled mechanism, similar to that of other high-level waste simulant glass compositions such as the French SON68 and LAW in the US. Forward dissolution rates, based on Si, B and Na release, suggested that the dissolution mechanism under dilute conditions, and pH and temperature ranges of this study, was not sensitive to composition as defined by HLW-incorporation rate.

Abstract:
Ostracods are a class of small crustaceans that inhabit both saltwater and freshwater environments. There are approximately 8,000 living species of ostracods. Non-marine ostracods belong to the Order Podocopida, which is comprised of the superfamilies Cypridoidea, Darwinuloidea, and Cytheroidea (Thorp 2015). They are commonly known as seed shrimp due to their small size, typically smaller than a poppy seed or up to 1 mm. Their carapace, the upper shell of crustaceans, is bivalved, giving it the common name mussel shrimp.

Abstract:
The subgenus Onagrandrena was first recognized and described by Linsley and MacSwain (1956) to include those black Andrena that are oligolectic on plants of the family Onagraceae and have pollen-collecting hairs modified to collect the specialized pollen from those plants. The males are more difficult to recognize than the females and most males are very similar to those of Melandrena. Since first described, two species of Onagrandrena have been recognized that have pale vestiture in both sexes. However, the pollen collecting hairs of both of these are of the Onagrandrena type, both sexes have well-formed pronotal angles and lateral ridges, and the males have relatively narrow, long mandibles with reduced or absent subapical teeth. The species of Onagrandrena are very similar and are difficult to tell apart. Populations seem to be relatively isolated in desert locations with habitats amenable to the host plants. This, we believe, has led to a proliferation of species and we can detect slight average differences between populations from different geographic locations within some species. A few of these microgeographic races have been recognized in the literature as subspecies, but the present authors prefer not to formally recognize these races with names. The reader is referred to earlier sections of this revision (LaBerge l967, l969, l97l, 1973, l977, l980, l986, l989; LaBerge and Bouseman 1970, 1987; LaBerge and Ribble 1972, 1975; Bouseman and LaBerge 1979; Thorp, 1969; Donovan, 1977) for details of morphology and for a more complete bibliography of the literature on Andrena. No new morphological terms have been introduced in the present work and the bibliography presented includes only references cited in the text or not listed in earlier parts of the revision. Published locality and floral records are included in the appropriate sections near the end of each species account. Maps showing the known distributions of species (Figs. 2-6) do not have all listed localities spotted on them. Localities that could be located only in a general way, such as county, or could not be found on maps or in gazetteers are omitted. Considerable detailed information is available concerning the floral activity of several species of Onagrandrena in papers by Linsley, MacSwain, Raven and Thorp (1963a and b, 1964) and MacSwain, Raven, and Thorp (1973). These papers also provide brief notes on nesting burrows and an earlier paper by Linsley, MacSwain and Smith (1955) gives details on the nesting biology of a few species of Onagrandrena.
