To investigate the possibility that apoptotic cell death is a mechanism by which Nramp1 mediates resistance to macrophage infection, the influence of Nramp1 on cellular apoptosis was studied by DNA fragmentation analyses using the Nramp1WT and Nramp1M macrophage cell lines. It was observed that basal levels of apoptosis were higher in Nramp1WT cells than Nramp1M macrophages.

Atherosclerosis as a chronic inflammatory disease, involves both innate and adaptive arms of immunity in which macrophages play the orchestral role in modulating lesion initiation, progression, and potentially devastating thrombotic complications. Available evidences support the notion of a central role of oxidative stress, due mainly to the imbalance between antioxidants and reactive oxygen species (ROS) in CVDs. The Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is able to infect CD4+ T cells as well as macrophages. Macrophage-tropism has been linked to determinants in the envelope of HIV. These determinants allow envelopes to exploit low levels of CD4 for infection. Macrophages are an important reservoir of virus, especially during chronic infection, and are likely responsible for the bulk of virus produced after CD4+T cells have declined. Viral factors that may impact the ability to infect macrophages are worth studying because this cell type is so important in infection. It was previously reported that the mac
