In the beautifully-illustrated book of rare and threatened plants of Greece (Phitos et al. 1995), the selection of species is based strictly on the four World Conservation Union (IUCN) categories of ‘extinct’, ‘endangered’, ‘vulnerable’ and ‘rare’ (Lucas & Synge 1978). The Swedish ‘red data’ book of plants (Aronsson et al. 1995) adds ‘care-demanding species’ to the list. Five percent of the total number of vascular plant species in Greece are included in the Greek book, while 23% of the vascular plant species in Sweden are in the Swedish book. This latter percentage may appear to be suffic

The Piceance Basin in western Colorado has undergone a drastic increase in oil and gas development over the last two decades. This increase has escalated concerns about the effects of development on the Basin’s flora and fauna, especially the rare plant community. Potential impacts from oil and gas development on rare plants may be found through decrease in plant habitat or by a decrease in plant reproductive success through changes to important pollinator communities. Here, we observed the pollinator community on two rare mustard plants, Physaria congesta and Physaria obcordata (Brassicaceae)

The native woodland herb, goldenseal (Hydrastis canadensis), is threatened in Canada. Recovery to a non-risk category is particularly desirable given its medicinal and potential crop value. Woodland herbs probably evolved in an environment with severe and frequent disturbances, including massive floods and impacts of extinct and extirpated fauna. Lack of specific disturbance may limit growth and spread. Ecological observations and analysis (Part I) refined this hypothesis. Comparison of recent and 10 year old surveys, and stem numbers over two years, indicated lack of growth and spread. Pollin

Abstract:
In 2011, the Northern Colorado Plateau Network (NCPN) began long-term monitoring of vegetation and soils in upland communities at Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park (BLCA) and Curecanti National Recreation Area (CURE). Managers wanted to understand conditions in sagebrush shrublands, aspen forests, pinyon-juniper woodlands, and Gambel oak shrublands. These four vegetation types are associated with a range of management concerns. These include suitable habitat conditions for the threatened Gunnison sage-grouse, planning for livestock grazing management, responses to disturbances (e.g.,

Abstract:
This special report provides a selection process for choosing priority species using the specific focus of high-elevation, forested habitats in the North Atlantic to demonstrate the process. This process includes criteria for choosing invasive species to incorporate into models, given the predicted spread of invasive plant species because of climate change. Discussed in this report are the US Army Corps of Engineers’ Threatened and Endangered Species Team portal, the US Fish and Wildlife Service’s Information for Planning and Consultation Portal, the nonprofit organization Partners in Flight’s

Abstract:
The unique environmental conditions found on Assateague Island National Seashore (ASIS) are reflected in the dynamic continuum of habitats stretching from ocean to bay, including beaches, dunes, grass and shrublands, freshwater wetlands, maritime forests, and salt marshes. The diverse barrier island landscape provides habitat for a multitude of specialized plant species, at least 46 of which have been classified as rare, threatened, or endangered (RTE). ASIS has recently completed planning and environmental compliance for several projects within the park, as well as for demolition of multiple
