The Eight Trigrams has held a high position in the Eastern culture, but its origin of has been a mystery for thousands of years, thus it has not yet entered the scientific system. This research reveals the possible origin of the Eight Trigrams and the purpose of drawing the hexagrams. Research has shown that due to changes in the solar radiation there exist annual and diurnal soil temperature variable zones (STVZs). The heat conducts and interactions between the double-layer also form two different statuses of warming and cooling. In this paper the hydrometeorological factors such as temperatu

Abstract This paper examines the images of trigram Gen in the Yijing, with a focus on images in the Shuogua 說卦 commentary. The Shuogua presents images either found in or to be extrapolated from the base text within a structured and highly interpretive system that forms “image programs” for each of the eight trigrams. I argue the Shuogua’s image programs have a defined architecture, and its images are not random lists of words collected without an agenda and devoid of relationships and mutual interaction with others. My main thesis is a high percentage of images in the Changes developed through

Abstract The Yijing (‘Classic of Changes’) is an important text in Daoist and Confucian traditions in China. It also served as a building block of ancient Japanese culture. The Japanese creation myth described in the Jindai no maki (‘Chapters on the Age of the Gods’) of the Nihon shoki (‘Chronicles of Japan’, 720 CE) was strongly influenced by such Yijing-related concepts as taiji (‘Supreme Ultimate’), yinyang (the two complementary and contradictory forces in the universe), qiankun (first two trigrams representing heaven and earth), sancai (three powers or realms of the universe: heaven, eart

In Gaoyao Region in Guangdong Province there are several gatherings of Eight-trigram form, which are extremely consistent with Eight-trigram pattern. Over the years, some scholars, as well as in the official publicity materials, hold that these gatherings are created based on the concept deriving from Taiji and Eight-trigram Thinking. However, after research on several typical Eight-trigram form gatherings, the author holds that the Eight-trigram form is only external manifestation of the gathering, it also has more important intrinsic causes. This study aims to examine the principle and applicability of the Jeongeumjeongyang method and to point out the limitations of the theoretical composition. The Jeongeumjeongyang method determines good and bad fortune by distinguishing between yin and yang according to the appropriateness of the yin and yang combination of the eight Trigrams from the Book of the Changes. Specifically, if the yin and yang of the upper and lower lines of the trigram (excluding the middle line) are different, it is Jeongeum; if they are the same, it is Jeongyang. Abstract According to both himself and his biographer, Chu Hsi was interested in questions of cosmology from his early childhood. At age three, when his father pointed skyward to tell him, “This is heaven,” he is reported to have asked, “What is above heaven?” And at age four or five, Chu asked, “What is heaven-in-itself (t’ien-t’i), and what lies beyond its peripheries?” At age seven, while other children were playing in the sand, he sat by himself and drew in it the Eight Trigrams, the cosmological symbols of the Book of Changes.
