Kwon, Hyuk-chan. "From Sanguozhi yanyi to Samgukchi : domestication and appropriation of Three Kingdoms in Korea." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2010. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/24238.

Full text
Abstract:
My dissertation entitled “From Sanguo zhi yanyi to Samgukchi: Domestication and Appropriation of Three Kingdoms in Korea” shows how a ‘Chinese’ work of fiction has become an enduringly popular Korean work since its importation in the sixteenth century. In this context, my thesis encompasses a comparative exploration of the influence of the Sanguo zhi yanyi 三國志演義 (Romance of the Three Kingdoms; hereafter Three Kingdoms) as reflected in premodern and contemporary Korean culture and literature. The domestication and appropriation of Three Kingdoms today can be attributed, in part, to a relentless modification and re-creation of its contents in the forms of numerous translations, adaptations, and revisions that have reflected socio-political and ideological agendas in Korea. I also clarify how the sociopolitical and ideological changes in Chosŏn Korea accelerated the reception and dissemination of Three Kingdoms by illuminating in particular how the Chosŏn rulers utilized the Neo-Confucian values in Three Kingdoms to maintain and strengthen Korea’s identity as the sole cultural and spiritual successor of the Great Han-Chinese empire after its collapse in 1644. Three Kingdoms’ status in Korea has been much higher than that of a Chinese classic; it remains the most widely read of all novels in modern Korea. Moreover, authors like Chang Chŏng’il do not hesitate to define Three Kingdoms as a national novel of Korea. It is virtually impossible for a modern Korean to lead a life divorced from Three Kingdoms. My dissertation shows that these phenomena did not appear suddenly in the twentieth-century Korea. Rather, they are the result of domestication and appropriation of Three Kingdoms that has steadily progressed for centuries; the novel has been relentlessly re-interpreted in terms of Korea’s socio-political and cultural context. My dissertation elucidates the cultural politics that contribute to making Three Kingdoms into a national novel of Korea.

Abstract:
The research of this dissertation is focused on 'transformation' in the development of Chinese painting and takes the three traditional elements in painting-- line, shape, and intention--as methods of observation. The dissertation proposes that Chinese painting has undergone two stages of critical transformation that are worthy of notice: the first occurring in the chaotic situation during Wei Jin North and South Dynasty in the third century, and the second stage lasting from the beginning of the 20th century till now.

Thomas, Peter G. "Burnout and work engagement levels in community pharmacists residing in three counties of the United Kingdom." Thesis, University of Portsmouth, 2011. https://researchportal.port.ac.uk/portal/en/theses/burnout-and-work-engagement-levels-in-community-pharmacists-residing-in-three-counties-of-the-united-kingdom(dbc82596-2dcd-487a-a2fb-ffdb7aaa2285).html.

Full text
Abstract:
The concept of burnout has been ascribed several meanings over the years, and concerns have been raised about the lack of clarity and consensus in the defining criteria. However, the most popular definition to emerge is the multidimensional description by Maslach where burnout is a syndrome of emotional exhaustion, depersonalisation and reduced personal accomplishment that can occur among individuals who do people work of some kind. Burnout can result from prolonged periods of stress or excessive workload. The aim of this research was to describe burnout and job engagement in a sample population of community pharmacists. Methods: A mixed method approach of quantitative and qualitative methods was used; both these methods are widely used within organisational psychology. The study was composed of two discrete but overlapping parts, each using a different but complementary methodology: a quantitative first part informing a qualitative second part. A self-administrated questionnaire was posted to all pharmacists in residing in the Local Practice Forum covering Dorset, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight (n=1170). Respondents completed a questionnaire pack comprising the Maslach Burnout Inventory-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) and the Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES-9) together with questions of demographic characteristics, both survey instruments have been widely used in job burnout and engagement studies. A letter was also included inviting respondents to take part in the qualitative part of this study and ethical approval was granted by the Bioscience Research Ethics Committee at the University of Portsmouth. The MBI-Human Services Survey (MBI-HSS) measures the three sub-scales of burnout, "emotional exhaustion," "depersonalization" and "personal accomplishment." The survey consists of 22 items designed to assess the three dimensions of burnout and the items are scored on a seven-point Likert scale ranging from zero (never) to 6 (every day), indicating the frequency of feelings and attitudes experienced. The Utrecht Work Engagement Scale (UWES) measures the three constituting dimensions of work engagement: vigour, dedication, and absorption, and consists of 9 items designed to measure the three dimensions. All items are scored on a 7-point frequency rating scale ranging from 0 (never) to 6 (everyday). Quantitative data were analysed using descriptive statistics (means, standard deviations, skewness and kurtosis) and calculated for all scales and subscales. Non-parametric tests were performed as the data was not normally distributed, and analysed using SPSS V 18.0. Regression analysis was performed to investigate the relative contribution of the different stressors and demographic variables to the variance in burnout and engagement. Internal consistency of the three subscales of MBI-HSS and UWES-9 was computed using Cronbach‟s alpha. Qualitative data were obtained using a combination of focus group, semi-structured interviews and electronic interviews and transcribed verbatim. Template analysis was used to develop a hierarchical list of codes representing themes and the relationship between themes. Results/Discussion: A total of 702 questionnaires were returned from a sample population of 1170 pharmacists residing in the Wessex LPF, giving an overall response rate 60%. Out of which 72.36% (n= 508) indicated that community pharmacy was their main job role. Demographic data of respondents was compared to previous workforce data and showed that 63.2% (n=321) were female and 36.4 %(n=185) were male. Respondents showed high scores on the Emotional Exhaustion scale (Mean 35.28, SD 12.10), high levels of depersonalisation (Mean 14.23, SD 6.48) and Low levels of Personal Accomplishment (Mean 42.86, SD 8.14).This gives an overall picture of a high degree of burnout within the sample population. Regarding engagement the mean score of 4.64,SD 3.74 indicates that the sample population has average levels of job engagement. Qualitative data results combined focus group (n=5), semi-structured interviews (n=9), telephone (n=5) and electronic interviews (n=5) and themed into positive/negative work and patient related events. Qualitative data indicated that community pharmacists are finding that paperwork/administration, skill mix, responsible pharmacist regulations, availability of dispensing stock and the demands of patients being factors that might contribute to burnout levels. Possible signs of job engagement included enjoyable patient events such as helping a patient and appreciation of a job well done by line management. Conclusions: This research has several implications for community pharmacy practice and service development. A significant proportion of pharmacists in this sample population suffered from burnout, and if this data were extrapolated to all community pharmacists and if those pharmacists were unable to detect and acknowledge the signs of burnout, disillusionment with the profession might follow. Employers, professional bodies and employees should become aware of the causes and symptoms of burnout and if possible monitor burnout levels on a regular basis, this could help them become aware of their own and others levels of burnout.

Green, Michael J. "An analysis of elite sport policy change in three sports in Canada and the United Kingdom." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2003. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/7900.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis explores the process of elite sport policy change in three sports (swimming, athletics and sailing/yachting) in Canada and the United Kingdom (UK). The nature of policy change is a complex and multi-faceted process and a primary aim of the study is to identify and analyse key sources of policy change in four elements of elite sport programming: i) the development of elite level facilities; ii) the emergence of 'full-time' swimmers, athletes and sailors; iii) the adoption of a more professional and scientific approach to coaching, sports science and sports medicine; and iv) competition opportunities and structures at the elite level. The study focuses on the meso-level of analysis, which centres on the structures and patterns of relationships in respect of three Canadian national sporting organisations (NSOs) and three UK national governing bodies of sport (NGBs) - representing the three sports cited above. The macro-level of analysis is also considered, where the primary concern is to analyse relations of power between governmenta nd quasi-governmentasl porting agenciesa nd the respective NSOs/NGBs. A case study approach is adopted, focusing on the six NSOs/NGBs, wherein a qualitative methodology is utilised in order to elicit data in respect of policy change in the four key elements of elite sport programming set out above. Within the case study approach, the advocacy coalition framework has proved useful in drawing attention to the notion of changing values and belief systems as a key source of policy change, as well as highlighting the need to take into account factors external to the policy subsystem under investigation. In Canada, it is evident that the preoccupation with high performance sport over the past 30 years, at federal government level, has perceptibly altered over the past two to three years. In contrast, in the UK, from the mid-1990s onwards, there has been a noticeable shift towards supporting elite sport objectives from both Conservative and Labour administrations. The study concludes that it is only by exploring specific sports through a comparative-analytic framework that a better understanding of policy change, within the complex and multi-layered sport policy process, might be achieved.

Rue-Pastin, Denise Renee. "Animas-La Plata Project Stakeholder Narratives: A Case Study Using Kingdon's Three Streams Theory." ScholarWorks, 2015. https://scholarworks.waldenu.edu/dissertations/1658.

Full text
Abstract:
Population growth, coupled with changing weather patterns, is straining water supplies, especially in the American Southwest. A multitude of tools, including additional storage, will be needed to meet water demand and supply gaps. The Animas-La Plata Project, a reservoir in southwest Colorado, provides a case study of how groups worked for nearly 70 years to solve a water problem: insufficient irrigation for agriculture. This qualitative case study addressed a lack of first-person narratives from those most involved. Its purpose was to gather stakeholder narratives and analyze them using Kingdon's three streams theory to address the extent to which the problem, policy, and political streams converged to open policy windows that resulted in a built facility. Purposeful sampling identified 11 organizational stakeholders with the highest seniority and longest association with the project. Transcribed data from structured interview questions were inductively coded and thematically analyzed. Key findings include identification of a major federal policy change in the late 1970s to 1980s that excluded escalated benefits of water projects. Within this same timeframe, necessary elements were present to open a policy window, the Colorado Ute Indian Water Rights Settlement, which resulted in project construction. If strategists can learn to predict the opening of policy windows "when the problem, policy, and political streams join" water resource planning and policy can be improved. Retrospective narrative analysis is a promising ex post audit and evaluation tool that policy analysts can use to assess program performance and lessons learned. Social change implications of the study are that its findings on the need for positive collaboration may prove valuable to those in management who seek to address water scarcity issues.

Kang, Yifan. "Three Essays on The Economics of Sexually Transmitted Infections." Thesis, Université d'Ottawa / University of Ottawa, 2020. http://hdl.handle.net/10393/40963.

Full text
Abstract:
Sexually transmitted infections (STIs) have important consequences for individuals and society. Extensive literature has shown that various individual factors impact STIs. However, much less is known about their structural causes and how they affect sexual behavior and sexual network formation. In the first two chapters of this dissertation, I investigate how sex ratios and ethnic divisions affect sexual activity and the spread of STIs. In the third chapter, I analyze the effect of ethnic-based romantic homophily on STIs. I provide a brief description of each chapter below. Chapter 1. We extend a theory of fidelity in a two-sided economy, and empirically discriminate between different rationales of sexual network formation by testing their implications for how sex ratios affect sexual activity, relationship stability, and the spread of sexually transmitted diseases in men versus women. We use a unique individual-level dataset in combination with census data from England and Wales, a setting where adult women outnumber adult men. Exploiting variation in cohort/ethnicity/region-specific sex ratios as a quasi-natural experiment, we find that a decrease in sex ratio imbalance decreases sexual infidelity and the number of serial partners, and increases the likelihood of safe sex. This in turn reduces the likelihood of acquiring a range of sexually transmitted infections and diseases, including chlamydia, gonorrhoea, genital warts, and herpes. Consistent with the rationale underlying the formation of egalitarian (in)fidelity networks, the effects of the sex ratio on sexual activity are larger for men compared to women, while its effects on sexual diseases are larger for women compared to men. The causality of these effects is established using classical and recent instrumental variables approaches and various robustness checks. For falsification, we show that sex ratios have no impact on several "atheoretical" health conditions, such as Parkinson's disease, chronic lung disease, heart attack, stroke, and diabetes, which do not arise from sexual interactions. Chapter 2. In societies organized around distinct racial and ethnic groups, limited communication between these groups might increase the search cost of sexual partners outside of own group, leading to racially segregated sexual networks and low risks of sexually transmitted diseases. At the same time, because sexual infidelity is more likely to be discovered when the cheated-upon individuals are co-ethnics, individuals in multiracial societies might find it cheaper to select sexual partners from diverse ethnic groups to hide their infidelity, which would lead to large interethnic sexual networks and high risks of STIs. We test these conflicting hypotheses by analyzing the causal effect of neighborhood-level racial diversity on sexual activity and STIs, using unique individual-level data from England, Wales, and Scotland. We find that individuals residing in multiracial neighborhoods have a greater number of sexual partners and are more likely to be infected with a wide range of STIs than their counterparts residing in more racially homogeneous neighborhoods. We use traditional and new instrumental variables approaches and various robustness checks to establish causation. Analyzing mechanisms, we find that within racially diverse neighborhoods, individuals who select sexual partners from diverse racial groups are more likely to be infected with STIs, holding the number of partners and other individual characteristics fixed. For falsification, we conduct a reverse-placebo test showing that racial diversity has no effect on a wide range of health conditions that do not arise from sexual interactions. From a policy perspective, our analysis implies that policies that promote racial and ethnic integration are likely to reduce unhealthy sexual activity and the spread of STIs in racially heterogeneous societies. Chapter 3. A classical hypothesis in social network theory holds that central individuals are more likely to receive and spread information than are their peripheral counterparts. We test this hypothesis in the context of sexual networks and sexually transmitted diseases, using data from the United Kingdom. Romantic homophily - the tendency to select sexual partners with similar ethnic background - is used as a measure of the extent to which an individual is peripheral in a sexual network. We find that more sexually homophilous individuals have a lower risk of sexual infections. This effect is causal, and larger for women, Whites, and heterosexuals.

Cuffe, Jennifer Mary. "The impact of Zimbabwe's 'crisis' on three transnational families situated in Zimbabwe, South Africa and the United Kingdom." Thesis, University of Southampton, 2017. https://eprints.soton.ac.uk/414969/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis examines the impact of national crisis in Zimbabwe at the start of the millennium on three families from different ethnic groups and backgrounds, exploring how they situated themselves within the broad political and historic context. The use of linked life stories offers an inter-generational perspective, which crosses gender and geographic borders and encompasses personal, family and historical time. By viewing ‘crisis’ through the prism of the extended family, I argue that individual responses are shaped by a family’s ‘culture’, in other words its history, myths and values, and by a person’s role and status within the family, which is in turn determined by gender, age and generation. This will, I hope, add a new dimension to transnational family studies while contributing to more recent work on ‘crisis migration’. It shows ‘crisis’, not as a specific set of events bounded by history and geography, but as a multi-faceted, dispersed and evolving experience with profound consequences for the lives of individuals and even, perhaps, the future of the extended family.

Lu, Wei. "An ethnographic study of teaching Chinese as a heritage language and foreign language in three educational contexts in the United Kingdom." Thesis, University of Birmingham, 2013. http://etheses.bham.ac.uk//id/eprint/4723/.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis documents an ethnographic study of teaching Mandarin in three educational contexts in the United Kingdom. The first context is a complementary school where the language is taught as a heritage language. The second context is an evening class which took place in a community centre in Birmingham where Mandarin is taught and learnt as a foreign language. The third context is a secondary school in London where students are learning Mandarin as a foreign language in order to obtain a GCSE. This thesis makes an original contribution by bringing together, within the same research agenda, three different contexts for teaching and learning of Mandarin. Although not a comparative study, this research highlights how context shapes learning for three very different groups of students. The analytical chapters describe how the different environments each sustain a variety of practices, beliefs and values in and around learning Mandarin which shape identity and pedagogy. The thesis is organised around the following themes: culture and intercultural understandings; multilingual identities; language ecology; and multilingual practices. Findings show the political and economic rise of China is imperative in understanding the local ecological order of classroom practices. Evidence shows the importance of establishing ‘small cultures’ in classrooms to engage students in intercultural questioning and understanding. The socially imposed identities of ethnicity along with affiliation to heritage language are investigated. The importance of negotiation is highlighted across the three contexts as young people are shown transforming identities which are presupposed by teachers. The researcher’s role is also investigated in this regard. Finally the use of multilingual pedagogies for teaching Mandarin are described with proficiency as an important element in determining the use of code-switching in the teaching of Mandarin. Several suggestions and recommendations for policies and practices are formulated at the end of the study which argue for pedagogic and linguistic flexibility.

Full text
Abstract:
In addition to temple rituals performed for the god by the king, festivals incorporated a broader domain, where a wider public had access to the divine. The participants in feasts ranged from the royal, officials and priests to the non-elite and the dead. Theoretically and ideologically, individuals would have received fruits of the divine power through the king by taking part in celebrations to variable extent. This functioned a vehicle for the god and the king to maintain their authoritative credibility and, by extension, the world order. The circulation of the divine force formed a different appearance at each festival, such as material supplies, promotions, and juridical decrees. These divine conveyances would have more or less met people’s social and religious needs. By embracing modality, periodicity, and publicness, festivals provided participants and audiences with a public setting and a formal means, whereby they were able to seek their identity as part of society. This may or may not have been relevant to personal piety, allegiance, responsibilities, and goodness, but public celebrations at least brought the king’s subjects together to common grounds for official beliefs and social decorum. In order to demonstrate such socio-religious functions of festivals, I will attempt to focus on and examine three Theban celebrations in the New Kingdom, namely, the Festivals of Opet, the Valley, and the New Year, about which a wealth of information has survived. The examination can hardly be possible without exploring the history of these feasts because their development from earlier times, to which part of this thesis is also devoted, shows the continuity of elements essential to Egyptian cult practices, particularly those associated with the mortuary cult.

Full text
Abstract:
Pension funds play a large role in the UK pension system since the returns of the funds determine how large the total pension will be. The future retirees can choose between active and passive fund management where the active management often is more expensive. In this study 102 actively managed UK equity pension funds are analyzed in order to see if managers have sufficient skill to generate risk adjusted return to cover the cost imposed on the investors. The result implies that the active pension funds in aggregate, before expenses, hold a portfolio that imitates market returns during 2000 to 2012. Bootstrap simulations suggest that only eight funds out of the sample of 102 have skilled managers and six of these managers are skilled enough to produce risk adjusted excess return large enough to cover the expenses imposed on the investor.

Abstract:
Abstract In recent years is being emphasized the importance of retirement planning not only during the accumulation period, when the individuals increase their wealth which would serve as a financial shield during their post retirement period, but also during the decumulation period which would permit to the individuals the right management of pension investment returns. In addition, the governments around the world have continuously been increasing their pension public expenditures bearing the risk of a higher public debt; in addition, many individuals suffer from penury at old age which primarily comes as an insufficiency of retirement savings. This thesis aims to provide an in depth-look of the pension systems and the retirement plans which are used and the well-functioning of the welfare states. Moreover, the pension systems of three different countries such as Italy, United Kingdom and Albania will be analyzed starting from their most important macroeconomic and demographic factors which influence the pension systems policies and employees’ retirement plan choices.

Abstract:
Aristotle stated in his Poetics that theatre's dual purpose was to educate and entertain. Centuries later the Roman Horace and Indian Bharata echoed his same sentiments. I intend to realize all three theorist's ideas on the theatre by creating an original educational and entertaining work and bringing it to performance. The audience will retain information without being aware of learning if it is presented in a pleasurable way. The most important geopolitical relationship of this century will be between China and America. In order to educate the American public about the culture of The Middle Kingdom, I propose to write and direct my own play, condensing all three thousand years of Chinese literature into a one hundred and ten minute performance. I will benefit from the personal nature of this thesis by experiencing every stage of a play's production: from idea to page to performance. My thesis will be made of three major parts: conceiving and writing the play, a journal of directing the debut production, and a third section made of choices, influences, and reflection on the entire experience. In this manner, the ideas swirling in my head may be made clear to others reading this thesis. The play itself will be a comical distillation of ten selected works of Chinese literature. Four non-gender specific American actors will seem to make up the show as it performs in a tongue-in-cheek way. Taking my stated goal of entertaining and educating the audience to heart, the overarching plot of the play will center on the four actors teaching the audience about the literature and culture of China by acting out scenes and telling stories. The information in the scenes will be targeted to a normal American citizen's educational level with liberal doses of humor added. The four actors will be playing fictionalized versions of themselves and at times breaking character by explaining and setting up the theatricality of the piece to the audience. Part of the fun of the show will be seeing how these actors explain a subject as obtuse as Chinese literature to Americans. Perhaps a cooking metaphor is the best way to think of the play: I will chop up raw Chinese literature, the actors will boil it onstage, the theatregoer will consume the mix, and exit the theatre full of entertaining intellectual nourishment. My experiences directing and producing the finished play will be recorded in a journal as a resource for future directors. I imagine directing the play will be the most challenging aspect of this thesis. How is the play changed when other people interact with it? How will the audience receive it? In addition, Committee Chair Mark Routhier and my thesis Committee Members, Mark Brotherton and Tan Huaixiang, will also give written responses to the play's performances. The play will be performed October 10-13, 2013 in the University of Central Florida's Performing Arts Complex Studio 2 classroom. In the final section I will write a reflection on the entire process. This will serve the dual purpose of giving me a place to collect my thoughts and giving others a special insight to the growth they might experience when producing this play. Foremost among my influences in writing a play with this subject matter are the style and tone of The Reduced Shakespeare Company.

In terms of TV drama, there is “The Romance of Three Kingdoms” in 1990 and “Three Kingdoms” in 2010. However, when talking about the era of the Three Kingdoms, we are bound to mention “The Records of Three Kingdoms” by Chen Shou and “The Romance of Three Kingdoms” by Luo Guanzhong. As for the influence, the stories in the “The Romance of Three Kingdoms” come down the ages. The paper mainly aims to analyze the characters in the TV drama “Three Kingdoms”, mainly including Cao Cao, Cao Pi, Sima Yi, Liu Bei, Zhuge Liang, Pang Tong, Sun Quan, Zhou Yu and Lu Su, all of wh are compared with those in Luo Guanzhong’s “The Romance of the Three Kingdoms” for supplement. It clarifies the difference between the figures in “Three Kingdoms” and “The Romance of the Three Kingdoms” through the comparison, establishes the differences of the characters, and then proposes the value and significance in the current society to lead people to realize the potential implications of the “Three Kingdoms”and to make themselves and the society beautiful and rich, rather than being limited to the plot or sticking to the difference from “The Romance of the Three Kingdoms”.

“Respecting Shu and degrading Cao” or “Emperor Shu and Robber Wei” has been the focus in long-term dispute in the study of the Three Kingdoms. Most of the scholars treated The History of the Three Kingdoms of Chen Shou as the division of Wei-gin South-North Dynasty. Literati mostly regarded Cao Wei as legitimacy. The advocacy of Tongjian Gangmu of Zhu Xi in South Sung Dynasty established the thinking of “respecting Shu and degrading Cao” and neglected the important turning period in Tang Dynasty for hundreds of years. By more than two hundreds of singing of Tang Dynasty and poems of the Three Kingdoms, this paper explains the evolution of “respecting Shu and degrading Cao” in Tang Dynasty. Literati in Tang Dynasty passionately praised the characters of Shu Han in poetry, and considered Liu Bei as a good emperor who “respects the persons and officers of virtue”. Zhuge Liang was Wang Tso who “transferred the House of Han”. However, the poets in Tang Dynasty criticized Cao Wei and Cao Cao was treated as “official who illegally seized the power”. Moral flaws of Cao Cao were significantly exposed in many works. The strong contrast demonstrates “respecting Shu and degrading Cao” of the literati in Tang Dynasty. In addition, the literati in Tang Dynasty focused on “Shu Han” and “Cao Wei” and neglected “Sun Wu”. Thus, the power of “Sun Wu” was marginalized in “Fight between Wei and Shu”. This paper can supplement the lack of discussion on Tang Dynasty in past studies on consciousness evolution of “respecting Shu and degrading Cao” in the theory of the Three Kingdoms, and highlight the critical significance of Tang Dynasty in the issue.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the earliest long Zhanghui (chapter-couplet) historical novel in China, is representative of ancient historical novels. Its charm far exceeds Records of the Three Kingdoms. Luo Guanzhong portrayed numerous characters in the book and profoundly depicted their personalities, traits, and thoughts. Mao Zonggang stated that “three absolutes” existed in the three kingdoms—absolute treachery, absolute wisdom, and absolute righteousness. Representative figures are as follows: Absolute treachery refers to Cao, a crafty hero of his generation, who was specialized in military strategy and tactics. Absolute wisdom refers to the outstanding contemporary military master, Zhuge Liang, who is praised through the ages for exercising the utmost care and sparing no effort in performing his duties. Absolute righteousness refers to Guan Yu, who is respected as the embodiment of righteousness and loyalty, and attributed the everlasting title of Saint of War. Sima Yi, who does not appear until the 39th chapter, plays a crucial role that influences Cao Cao and Zhuge Liang as well as the entire situation of the novel. The portrayal of Sima Yi differs greatly from other top strategists such as Zhuge Liang and Zhou Yu, who may live in seclusion or be portrayed as young and prosperous. However, literal terms often obscure the true history; in studies of Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Sima Yi has been neglected. He was not only a militarist who exhibited strategies and thoroughly understood military tactics, but also a politician of lofty ambitions. This study focused on how Sima Yi is portrayed in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, integrating information from his military strategies, as well as his personality traits, thoughts on endurance, and personality combinations in his life. The author of this study did not emphasize criticism against Sima Yi’s loyalty and rebellion in history, but instead explored his image. This study carefully analyzed the legendary life of Sima Yi, the Emperor Xuan of Jin, and summarized views on artistic value of Sima Yi in Romance of the Three Kingdoms; finally, the key historical position of his portrayal in the novel was proposed.

Human history is a history of wars. Wherever there are people, there are Wars. From Ancient Age to the Medieval Age, all types of wars, such as chariots, the square infantry of ancient Roman, and the cavalry that dominated the operation of the wars, have developed dynamically and more advanced as human obtained wisdoms. Wars proceed in many different ways because of the advantages and disadvantages that are possessed by both sides, and therefore, situations in war fields are often changeable. There is an old saying that “Plans never catch up with changes”. How to quickly change as circumstances change in time of war and take chances to win a battle is always a task for humans. When the general is busy with dealing circumstances, he will need his onlookers who know military tactics very well to provide some assistance. It is staffs who play the role. A good strategy often changes the course of war. Therefore, a military with few numbers of soldiers can defeat another one with larger numbers, or an army with less force can win a powerful one. A good tactic is always the key to the victory of a battle; on the contrary, a bad one may cause failure. Three Kingdoms, one of the Four Great Classical Novels in ancient China, is an encyclopedia of military tactics. Although some parts of the story are quite different from the historical facts, its importance is never doubtful. Nurhaci and Mao Tse-Tung, for example, loved reading Three Kingdoms. However, researches on this book often focus on the leaders, such as Tsao Tsao, Liu Bei, and Sun Quan, or the generals, such as Guan Yu, Chang Fei, and Zhao Yun. There are even more researches about the staff such as Zhou Yu, and Zhu-Ko Liang. Those researches are innumerable. Except these two, other members of staff seem to be neglected. Therefore, this study targets “Staff” and aims to probe into how these wise men brought their abilities into full play in that age of chaos. This study includes seven chapters. The first chapter is the introduction including research motivation and goals, research methods, literature review, and outlines, as well as the writing rules of this study. The second chapter explains the formation of Three Kingdoms, which gradually transferring the work of The History of the Three Kingdoms and other materials such as dramas, and scripts for story-telling…etc, into the novel of Three Kingdoms, written by Luo Guan-Zhong. The third chapter discusses the staff in a general view. Three Kingdoms will be the focus of the discussion, which will include the historical facts as its supplements. The fourth chapter concentrates on “Strategy Planning” that is made by staffs in “Three Kingdoms”, based on the “military strategy” of the chief staff Xun Yu, Lu Su and Zhu-Ko Liang because they had great influence on the development of the Three Kingdom’s status. The fifth chapter emphasizes the staff’s quick wit on the spur of the moment which shows their “military strategy”. The sixth chapter analyzes characters of the staffs in Three Kingdoms and their characteristics and images. The seventh chapter is the conclusion that concludes all arguments, and gives explanations to some unmentioned key points in this study.

Three Kingdoms is an ancient Chinese historical novel, and it is known for being one of the four major Chinese novels with the Journey to the West, Outlaws of the Marsh, and Dream of the Red Chamber. I choose Three Kingdoms as my study target because it attracted my attention when I studied in high school. When conducting a research study at the Interpreting and Translation Department of Chang Jung Christian University, I adopted this book as my research topic because of its Sinological importance. The study is based on Lawrence Venuti’s Domestication and Foreignization theory and Hans Vermeer’s Skopos theory. I make comparisons based on three major parts: the text of Three Kingdoms, English translation of Three Kingdoms, and the author’s back-translation. Comments are then made on these comparisons. I hope that this thesis will be helpful for those who are interested in Sinology, written translation, Chinese traditional novels, as well as translation theories.

The Romance of the Three Kingdoms is the most widespread and far-reaching long chapter novel in China. The core of its charms lies in a variety of heroic presence. This novel built on The Records of the Three Kingdoms, and the author Luo Guanzhong added many rich details and made up numerous interesting stories to make the heroes of the Three Kingdoms period to be constant repetition in front of the world. The difference between the Romance of the Three Kingdoms and the general heroic novels is that it presents the complete history of hero: the birth of hero, the peak of hero, and the death of hero, especially the death of the main hero which will be the climax of the storyline in the whole novel. Death is a barrier which no one can escape from it in real life and it is a subject which is often discussed on the art of fiction, wherein the value decision of facing the death is the last stage for the hero to seek his ego, and it’s also the key to highlighting the self-worth and success in heroic business. This paper will take Zhuge Liang et al. (eight heroes in total) as the subjects to analyze the experience of hero in The Romance of the Three Kingdoms, the way of building a hero, and the atmosphere brewing of hero’s death by means of several methods, such as the comparative analysis of historiography and historic novels, the structural theory of narratology, the type of literature, and the psychological aesthetics etc. It hopes to discover the dramatic effects and the performance of aesthetics for the death situation of hero in The Romance of the Three Kingdoms with the above methods.

Romance of the Three Kingdoms, which represents a glorious era when many great heroes congregated and struggled to be emperors in the Three Kingdoms, has always been popular for centuries. The rise and fall of the heroes and wars superseded by one another within the ninety years, which led the countries to a state of agitation or of turbulent change, were all vividly and fluently depicted and well-composed by the literary giant, Luo Guan-Chung. It was so well written that the descendents from the generation on deeply believed they were actual historical events, and imprinted the thoughts on their minds, leaving the fictitious aspects behind. Although they were not all historically accurate, the years of The Three Kingdoms were an epoch which was indeed in a turmoil of wars in the history of Chinese. The considerable warlords who did leave their names in history made this era even more magnificent. Luo Guan Chung, with his artistic and creative literary talent, used his fertile imagination and properly arranged his stories based on the facts. All the elements above combined made Romance of the Three Kingdoms a highly-praised masterpiece. In Chinese culture, moral values were deeply embedded in Chinese people, such as being loyal to your kings, brothers, and parents. Guan-Chung Luo, as an intellectual in political turmoil, he felt great responsible for preaching the moral values to all the people at that turbulent time. Therefore the main “brotherhood characters” he depicted, such as Liu Bei, Zhuge Liang, Guan Yu and Zhang Fei, had their unique images, special symbols, and all of them glowed with the good virtues, loyalty, and patriotism, which have made the posterity respect and admire them until now. The sort of spirit and characters nurtured by the Chinese traditional culture were the precious cultural assets, which were also one of the reasons why Chinese people differ from the western people. This study is divided into six chapters. In the introductory chapter, I’ll not only elaborate my research motive, goal, categories, and methods, but also do research on literature review. In the second chapter, I’ll analyze the social and culture background which Luo Guan Chung was in, and discuss the materials which the stories were based on in order to know better about the spirits and thoughts in “Romance of the Three Kingdoms.” In the third chapter, I’ll try to give a clear statement about the origin and evolvement of the thoughts on being loyal to the superiors and brothers in order to know better about why the “brotherhood characters” made such choices and acted that way in their lives. In the fourth chapter, I’ll analyze the thoughts and behaviors of Liu Bei, Zhuge Liang, Guan Yu, Zhang Fei, and Zhao Yun to distinguish the outstanding features of the “brotherhood characters” depicted by the author. In the fifth chapter, in order to figure out the immense influence on intellectuals and to appreciate the characteristics of history and culture, I’ll probe into the culture meaning of the “brotherhood character”and the author’s thoughts while he was creating this great work. In the sixth chapter, I’ll sum up the discussions above and bring up the points that will enlighten the mind of people in modern society.

Prior to the Eastern Jin Dynasty(317-419), both the degree of development and humanistic performance in the middle and downstream area of Yangtze River were not as prosperous and speedy as the ones in the Central Plain which is the area of the middle and downstream of Yellow River. The Yuan Jia Rebellion(307-312)in the Western Jin Dynasty forced the Nobles to move south to seek refuge. The move had boosted prosperous development in the fields of politics, academic research and culture and this trend had become even prosperous in both the Tang Dynasty and the Sung Dynasty. As for Sun family's competence to gain a foothold in a world divided by three powers in the Eastern Wu Dynasty(222-280) during the times of the Three Kingdoms, there must be assistance from a group of loyal, candid and thoughtful officials in addition to Sung Jen, Sung Ce and Sung Quan's preeminent leadership. Emphasis of this research lies on the analysis of these extraordinary figures of Chou Yu, Lu Su and Lu Xun who exerted preeminent performance in leadership and management. This paper uses "History of the Three Kingdoms" and "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" as the basis to explore performance and image of assisting officials in the early days of the Eastern Wu Dynasty (252, the year before Sun Quan died). In history, Chou Yu was a man with excellent strategies and majestic appearance while he was portrayed as a narrow-minded man in the novel. In history, Lu Su was a smart man with spectacular strategies while he was stuck in the "Eight Formation" in the novel. Gu Yun was a calm man good at drafting strategies. Each one of his comments was proven true. In history, Lu Men was a man with extraordinary courage. But according to the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms," he did not present the same performance in latter days. Official historic materials were edited based on numerous historic records. There were differences in the contents but respective historian's knowledge on history as well as their different talents were adopted during the editing. Although the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" is a novel, 60 to 70 percent of it was based on history records while the remaining 30 to 40 percent was derived from storytelling and the author's unique thoughts. Loyalty, treacherousness, righteousness and evil in the "Romance of the Three Kingdoms" had been deep-rooted in the minds of people. However, there shouldn't be any misinterpretation on what was right or wrong. With the comparison between official history records and novels, we'll be able to distinguish the true history from attractiveness.

This paper aimed to explore the character development of the military officers from the state of Wu in the novel “Romance of the Three Kingdoms.” Based on historical information of Wu, the author analyzed the images of the “three veteran generals” and “three commanders-in-chief,” the development of the image of these characters, as well as the meanings conveyed by the image. In ancient official Chinese history, the state of Wu was a political power, with its regime founded upon military force. The Three Kingdoms era was characterized by its emphasis on the battle of wit rather than a battle of force. However, due to the service of the “three renowned veteran generals” and “three renowned commanders-in-chief,” the powerful military might of Wu was able to survive this period and became the last regime to be conquered by the Jin invasion. The veteran generals won numerous wars for the state on the battlefield over three generations, whilst the commanders-in-chief, who were as significant to the state as the chancellor was, brought exceptional military strategy. Although, regardless of the extent of their contributions to the nation, the historical characters did not survive through the ages, and their image was only retained through works of literature. The gifted story-telling skills of the novelists produced a sense of romance and art to these characters. The “three veteran generals” and “three commanders-in-chief” in the novel “Romance of the Three Kingdoms” are some of such examples. This paper is divided into six sections. Section 1 is the introduction, which specifies the research aims and purpose, the coverage and limitations of the study, past literature, research methods and procedures, and a brief introduction to Mao Zonggang’s commentary edition of “Romance of the Three Kingdoms.” Section 2 describes the historical background when these generals and commanders-in-chief joined the military forces of Wu, as well as their image in official history, with an emphasis on their decisive influence on the Wu regime. This section aims to establish a foundation for the analysis of the characters in the novel and the characters’ transformation from their image in official history to their image as portrayed in the novel. Section 3 examines the internal and external image of the three veteran generals (i.e., Cheng Pu, Huang Gai, and Han Dang) in the novel, from the perspective of their battle and strategic skills, relationship with the emperors, personality, and behavior. Section 4 investigates the internal and external image of the three commanders-in-chief (i.e., Zhou Yu, Lv Meng, and Lu Xun) in the novel, from the perspective of their battle and strategic skills, relationship with the emperors, personality, and behavior. Section 5 discusses how the veteran generals and commanders-in-chief were depicted in the novel, exploring the in-depth significance of their portrayed image, and concludes the narrative features and main ideas of the novel. Section 6 serves as the summary of this paper.
