Rankin, Timothy M. "Three dimensional printing surgical instruments| Are we there yet?" Thesis, The University of Arizona, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1564614.

Full text
Abstract:
<p> <b>Background:</b> The applications for rapid prototyping have expanded dramatically over the last 20 years. In recent years, additive manufacturing has been intensely investigated for surgical implants, tissue scaffolds, and organs. There is, however, scant literature to date that has investigated the viability of 3D printing of surgical instruments. </p><p> <b>Materials and Methods:</b> Using a fused deposition manufacturing (FDM) printer, an army/ navy surgical retractor was replicated from polylactic acid (PLA) filament. The retractor was sterilized using standard FDA approved glutaraldehyde protocols, tested for bacteria by PCR, and stressed until fracture in order to determine if the printed instrument could tolerate force beyond the demands of an operating room. </p><p> <b>Results:</b> Printing required roughly 90 minutes. The instrument tolerated 13.6 kg of tangential force before failure, both before and after exposure to the sterilant. Freshly extruded PLA from the printer was sterile and produced no PCR product. Each instrument weighed 16g and required only $0.46 of PLA. </p><p> <b>Conclusions:</b> Our estimates place the cost per unit of a 3D printed retractor to be roughly 1/10th the cost of a stainless steel instrument. The PLA Army/ Navy is strong enough for the demands of the operating room. Freshly extruded PLA in a clean environment, such as an OR, would produce a sterile, ready to use instrument. Due to the unprecedented accessibility of 3D printing technology world wide, and the cost efficiency of these instruments, there are far reaching implications for surgery in some underserved and less developed parts of the world.</p>

Johnston, Elizabeth Nicole. "Stable tearing characterization of three materials with three methods." Thesis, Kansas State University, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2097/14386.

Full text
Abstract:
Master of Science<br>Department of Mechanical and Nuclear Engineering<br>Kevin Lease<br>Over the past several years the crack tip opening angle (CTOA) has been identified as one of the key fracture parameters to characterize low constraint stable tearing and instability in structural metallic alloys. This document presents the results of experimental stable tearing characterizations. Characterization methods include optical microscopy and marker band measurements of crack front tunneling. Specific attention is given to the measurement methods used, and also the correlation between CTOA and Delta-5. The effect of tunneling and comparisons with computational results are discussed, and the effect of material and measurement method on CTOA is observed and a clear relationship is seen. Preliminary work on future studies into internal features and behavior is also presented.

Abrahamyan, Tigran. "High energy three-body breakup of three-nucleon systems." FIU Digital Commons, 2007. http://digitalcommons.fiu.edu/etd/1107.

Full text
Abstract:
The main goal of this dissertation was to study two- and three-nucleon Short Range Correlations (SRCs) in high energy three-body breakup of 3He nucleus in 3He(e, e'NN)N reaction. SRCs are characterized by quantum fluctuations in nuclei during which constituent nucleons partially overlap with each other. A theoretical framework is developed within the Generalized Eikonal Approximation (GEA) which upgrades existing medium-energy methods that are inapplicable for high momentum and energy transfer reactions. High momentum and energy transfer is required to provide sufficient resolution for probing SRCs. GEA is a covariant theory which is formulated through the effective Feynman diagrammatic rules. It allows self-consistent calculation of single and double re-scatterings amplitudes which are present in three-body breakup processes. The calculations were carried out in detail and the analytical result for the differential cross section of 3He(e, e'NN)Nreaction was derived in a form applicable for programming and numerical calculations. The corresponding computer code has been developed and the results of computation were compared to the published experimental data, showing satisfactory agreement for a wide range of values of missing momenta. In addition to the high energy approximation this study exploited the exclusive nature of the process under investigation to gain more information about the SRCs. The description of the exclusive 3He(e, e'NN)N reaction has been done using the formalism of the nuclear decay function, which is a practically unexplored quantity and is related to the conventional spectral function through the integration of the phase space of the recoil nucleons. Detailed investigation showed that the decay function clearly exhibits the main features of two- and three-nucleon correlations. Four highly practical types of SRCs in 3He nucleus were discussed in great detail for different orders of the final state re-interactions using the decay function as an unique identifying tool. The overall conclusion in this dissertation suggests that the investigation of the decay function opens up a completely new venue in studies of short range nuclear properties.

Lisboa, Maria Luiza Viana. "Three-phase three-limb transformer models in the harmonic domain." Thesis, University of Canterbury. Electrical and Electronic Engineering, 1996. http://hdl.handle.net/10092/6160.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis describes a new three-limb three-phase electromagnetic transformer model in the Harmonic Domain. It is a composite model, with the linear circuit represented by the short-circuit impedances, and the non-linear magnetic circuit represented in a linearised form by means of Norton equivalents. The proposed Norton equivalents accurately represent the magnetic circuit, as they are derived from the linearisation (in the Harmonic Domain) of individual magnetising characteristics for the magnetic branches and the magnetic circuit laws. A Newton-Raphson iterative procedure is also developed to accurately determine the non-linear distribution of the magnetic fluxes. The influence of the magnetising characteristic approximation upon the harmonic solution is investigated. The adequacy of several approximations, including cubic splines, are assessed and Singular Value Decomposition have been explored to determine the equation parameters. The widely accepted assumption of equally distributing the magnetising currents between the primary and secondary terminals is also investigated. For single-phase transformer models this assumption is shown to be inaccurate, at harmonic frequencies, and inadequate, for star-connected three-phase transformer models and improved harmonic distribution factors for the magnetising currents are proposed. Three-phase three-limb electromagnetic transformer models for the most commonly used winding electrical configurations are derived, and the simulations results analysed by means of sensitivity analysis and comparisons with the practical and theoretical knowledge reported in the literature.

Williams, Brian. "Fifty three poems." Master's thesis, University of Cape Town, 2001. http://hdl.handle.net/11427/8756.

Full text
Abstract:
This collection is the result of an exciting approach to the study of creative writing by an academic institution. The opportunity to obtain a Masters Degree for the writing of poetry helped to energise my efforts to put together fifty-three new and unpublished poems. The poems are universal in their outreach, despite the fact that I have a particular life experience as a Black person in South Africa and the world of oppression and exploitation. Love in its various forms is a dominant theme in the writing: love for life, love for humanity, love for beauty, love as an expression of the need to oppose injustice and to strive for human freedom. Love at an intimate and personal level is also given a place of honour in the writing. Issues of political intrigue and concerns about the emergence of new strands of oppression form the sub-text of many of the poems. The need for democratic expression finds a voice in the writing and there is also support for a regenerative energy to strengthen the pillars of human freedom. This diverse collection mirrors the beauty of nature and the personal anguish of the poet. It also seeks to pose questions, about the nature of life and living and our presence, in the cosmos of a greater universe of meaning. I hope the poems succeed in their intention to inspire others.

Gaut, Patricia J. "The three arrows." Thesis, View thesis, 1995. http://handle.uws.edu.au:8081/1959.7/31124.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis is an exploration of the concept of time and its influence on literature. It is presented through an original novel, ‘The three arrows’, a critical reflection on this work, and an essay exploring the catalyst of change generated by the perception of time. The novel is inspired by Stephen Hawking’s ‘A brief history of time’ and his ‘arrows of time’: the thermodynamic arrow, in which entropy increases; the psychological arrow, the direction in which we feel time pass; and the cosmological arrow, the direction of time in which the universe expands. The literary techniques adopted in the writing of the novel are discussed, as is the author’s research into the construction of time in literary discourse and its relationship to religious, philosophical, historical and psychological constructions. The catalytic force of scientific thought and discovery as it resonates through these fields is traced. Modernist and Postmodernist writing is examined, the Modernists with their technique of time-displacement and the Postmodernists with their exploration of randomness and discontinuity in the belief that it is the profound and discernable effect of the entropy and escalating change in a world of scientific uncertainty on the writing process itself.

Giancola, Donna M. "Parmenides: fragment three." Thesis, Boston University, 1994. https://hdl.handle.net/2144/37150.

Full text
Abstract:
Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston University<br>PLEASE NOTE: Boston University Libraries did not receive an Authorization To Manage form for this thesis or dissertation. It is therefore not openly accessible, though it may be available by request. If you are the author or principal advisor of this work and would like to request open access for it, please contact us at open-help@bu.edu. Thank you.<br>The purpose of this thesis is to understand and evaluate, in the context of his monism, the meaning and implications of Fragment Three of Parmenides' poem. This fragment, itself incomplete, reads as follows: ... tò γáp αùtò voεîV εótiv tε Kαi εîvαi Which can be translated as: . . . for this is the same, to think and to be There is no disagreement that in Fragment Three Parmenides is in some way relating voεîv ("thinking") to εîvαi ("being"). The primary, but not the only problem which it poses is this: in the identification between thinking and being, are these words a mere statement that being is intelligible, or are they an assertion that Being is intelligent? Most modern commentators side with the former interpretation which accords with the view that reality/being is ultimately objective and impersonal. To maintain this position they are forced to construe the active infinitive voεîv as passive in meaning, with the further corollary that this verb-form implies mere possibility. The first proponent of this interpretation, Eduard Zeller, provided no justification for it. Post factum attempts by John Brunet and Uvo Holsher to provide the needed justification have proven to be groundless. The linguistic and literary evidence points overwhelmingly to the active meaning. Further, the prima facie interpretation of the parallel texts within the poem, as well as all the extant ancient testimonia (Clement of Alexandria, Plotinus, Proclus) support the active meaning. This thesis differs, then, from those interpretations which assume that Fragment Three distinguishes (thinking) subject from (inanimate) object; as well as from the view adopted by Heidegger that it means merely that being is the only possible object of knowledge. The conclusion of this thesis is that for Parmenides "to think" is identical with "to be" absolutely, that Being is not only one, but is alive and the center of consciousness, i.e. is Mind. Hence the fundamental question which Parmenides' poem answers is not "What is being?" but rather, "What is the way to the One-Who-Is?"<br>2031-01-01

Abstract:
AN ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION OF SUNIL LAMSAL, for the Doctor of Philosophy degree in QUANTITATIVE METHODS, presented on 10/30/2015, at Southern Illinois University Carbondale. TITLE: COMPARING THREE ESTIMATION METHODS FOR THE THREE-PARAMETER LOGISTIC IRT MODEL MAJOR PROFESSOR: Dr. Yanyan Sheng Different estimation procedures have been developed for the unidimensional three‐parameter item response theory (IRT) model. These techniques include the marginal maximum likelihood estimation, the fully Bayesian estimation using Markov chain Monte Carlo simulation techniques, and the Metropolis-Hastings Robbin-Monro estimation. With each technique, a prior can be specified to reflect prior belief on each model parameter. Previous studies evaluating the fully Bayesian estimation procedure for this model suggests that the model can be viewed as a mixture model, and it suffers from a non-convergence problem unless strong informative priors are specified for the item slope and intercept parameters. This study focused on comparing the three estimation methods for the three-parameter logistic (3PL) model in parameter estimation using Monte Carlo simulations. In particular, sample sizes, test lengths, prior specifications and actual item parameters were manipulated to reflect various test situations. The results suggest that: 1) all three estimation methods performed differently under different simulation conditions, 2) the three methods performed better when the actual parameters are close to their prior mean or mode than when the actual parameters are close to their boundary values, 3) a relatively more informative prior had to be specified for item parameters to ensure convergence with each of the three methods and the item parameters were more accurately estimated.

Abstract:
The analysis in this thesis is motivated by two models in the literature. Dong and Atick [4] describe the relationship between spatial and temporal frequencies of videos of natural scenes. Langer and Mann [10] describe a geometric constraint on the power spectrum of individual image sequences produced by an observer moving laterally relative to a cluttered 3D scene. Langer and Mann's model proposes a bowtie pattern in the frequency domain, but does not consider the distribution of power within this bowtie. In this thesis we consider the distribution of power within the bowtie by applying the model of Dong and Atick. The model predicts a spreading of power away from the bowtie axis, and a bias of power towards low speeds. Using synthetic image sequences, we verify both of these predictions. Other contributing factors are discussed including occlusion, transparency and the distribution of objects over different depths in the scene.

Abstract:
The topic of entrepreneurship as a field of research is widely recognised and it has been claimed as a major driver of economic growth. This doctoral thesis consists of three essays focused on the analysis of entrepreneurship. The use of different databases and the application of different methodological techniques, both at macroeconomic and at microeconomic levels, enriches this thesis by approaching the entrepreneurial activity from different points of view and allow us to analyse the phenomenon much deeper. In particular, this thesis provides new evidence on three broad issues: the dynamic behavior of entrepreneurial rates; self-employment as a way to escape from skill mismatches and; the impact of small versus large firms on economic performance. The results of the first essay indicate that exits have a positive impact on future levels of entrepreneurial activity in a country, being this effect higher for opportunity entrepreneurs. The results show some important implications for researchers and policy makers given that business exit may be overcome when there is a necessity motivation. The results of the second essay that not only the average self-employee is less likely to declare being skill-mismatched but also that those individuals who transit from salaried employment to self-employment reduce their probability of skill mismatches after the transition. The results of the third essay suggest that, on average, the share of micro and large firms may have been ‘above optimum’ (particularly in lower income EU countries) whereas the share of medium-sized firms may have been ‘below optimum’ (particularly in higher income EU countries).

In the second essay, we analyze the impact of options trading on the price distribution of the underlying asset. Specifically, we show that S&P 500 futures finish in the proximity of the closest strike price on days when options on S&P 500 futures expire. We document that this effect is mainly driven by the rebalancing of delta hedges of the market maker. In the third essay, we develop a theory of price support in security markets that arises from conflict of interests, and we test our hypothesis in the context of the Spanish mutual fund industry. In particular, we analyze how bank-affiliated mutual funds trade in the stock of the parent bank and show that, consistently with the price support hypothesis, affiliated mutual funds tend to increase their holdings of the parent bank’s stock following a large drop in its price.<br>Esta tesis consta de tres capítulos.

Abstract:
<p>The performance of a hot wire probe with three wires is investigated for two different flow cases. The wires are made of a platinum/rhodium alloy, and has a diameter of 5 micrometer. The three wires make a probe volume with acrossection of approximately 5 mm. A cosinus fit using the effective angle method gives a deviation of plus/minus 1 degree for a variation of yaw angle equal to plus/minus 20 degrees. First the probe was tested in a fully developed turbulent pipe flow, for Re_D = 10^5. Good results were obtained for |y/R|<0.8, both for mean velocities and turbulent stresses. Closer to the wall the mean flow gradient was to large relative to the probe resolution, giving large errors. The second flow case was a cylinder wake. A traverse of the flow at x/D = 10 was performed at Re_D = 3*10^3. The mean velocities and turbulent stresses was partly found to be in qualitative agreement with results found in litterature. The shear stresses uw and vw were however found to be unphysically large, this is belived to be due to the velocity gradient in the wake. Conditional averaging of the wake results with respect to shedding frequency was also conducted.</p>

Abstract:
RNA-binding proteins (RBP) shuttle between cellular compartments either constitutively or in response to stress and regulate localization, translation and turn over of mRNAs. In our laboratory, cytosolic proteome map of Phanerochaete chrysosporium was established and upon Pb exposure, the changes in cytosolic protein expressions were determined. The identified RBPs were a newly induced polyadenylate-binding protein (RRM superfamily) as well as two up-regulated proteins, namely splicing factor RNPS1 and ATP-dependent RNA helicase, all being very important candidates of post-transcriptional control in response to stress. This finding inspired us to conduct Real Time PCR studies in order to have a better understanding of the changes in the expression of corresponding genes at mRNA level in response to Pb exposure, thus the present study aims at examining the effect of lead exposure on the transcript levels of the genes coding for ATP-dependent RNA helicase, splicing factor RNPS1 and polyadenylate binding protein. As shown via expression analysis based on Real Time PCR, the mRNA level of splicing factor RNPS1 showed 2.68, 2.62 and 4.86 fold increases in a dose-dependent manner when the cells were grown for 40 h in the presence of 25, 50 and 100 &micro<br>M Pb, repectively. ATP-dependent RNA helicase mRNA level showed no significant increase in response to 25 &micro<br>M Pb exposure while increased 2 and 1.84 fold in response to 50 and 100 &micro<br>M Pb, respectively. Polyadenylate binding protein mRNA levels revealed no significant increase when exposed to 25, 50 and 100 &micro<br>M Pb. As to the mRNA dynamics as a function of duration of lead exposure, the mRNA level of this protein showed 2.54-fold increase upon 1 h exposure to 100 &micro<br>M Pb. Splicing factor RNPS1 mRNA level showed a significant increase of 19.22 fold at 2nd h of 50 &micro<br>M Pb exposure. Expression level of ATP-dependent RNA helicase was not affected by the time of exposure to Pb.

Abstract:
This is an imaginative and speculative project that takes its point of departure from an architectural competition announced in 2009 for a new cemetery on Järvafältet.  The project is curated according to three walks: The level walk -uses varying levels to accommodate different types of burial. The sound walk - uses sound as a means of memorializing the deceased. The node walk – rethinks the conventional religious segregation of cemetery space toward integration and an ecological way of reusing land for burial.

Abstract:
This dissertation consists of three chapters, which aim at exploring respectively: i) how parties’ advertisements and voters’ strategic communication affect the political outcome; ii) whether and under which conditions a “market for votes” is preferable to the “one person, one vote” mechanism; and iii) whether subsidies to private donations may be used as strategical device by policy makers to secure re-election. The first chapter analyses how voters’ interactions affect the parties’ advertisement strategies and shape the political outcome of the election. We develop a two level game that embeds: (i) a model of political competition, where parties compete in campaign advertising, (ii) a model of personal influence, where voters can strategically communicate with each other in order to affect the policy outcome. We show that, first, homophily rises endogenously and individuals value only the information received from like-minded voters, regardless of the distance between the voters’ biases. Second, when the richness of the network or the degree of homophily within the network, or both, are low, then parties are likely to tailor their advertising to voters ideological biased toward their opponent - rather than targeting the closer ideological group of voters. The second chapter of this dissertation is joint work with Herakles Polemarchakis. In this chapter, we construct a simple centralized model of spatial voting where voters can sell/buy political influence by trading their votes for a consumption good. We model the voting game as a representative election game in order to concavify total voters’ payoff. By mimicking a majority rule in the election game we are able to focus on the effect of the distributional and ideological conflicts in the society and how these conflicts affect, in turn, the total welfare under two voting allocation mechanisms: the market and the “one person one vote” principle. We show that a market for votes is desirable with respect the “one-person one vote” principle if the degree of conflict in both income and political preferences is extreme, otherwise the simple “one-person one vote” performs better than the market mechanism, as it maximizes the sum of utilities of voters. The third chapter of the thesis is joint work with Carlo Perroni, Kimberly Scharf and Al Slivinski. In this chapter we study how tax relief on private donations towards the private provision of collective goods can protect minorities from majority-driven outcomes where high taxes are exclusively used to finance publicly provided goods that these minorities do not value. We show that an elected policymaker can use the same instruments as a strategic commitment device aimed at creating and supporting political alliances that would not otherwise be able to coalesce, thus securing majority support for re-election.
