Abstract:
The Back Cover as a Place for Creating an Image of Translated Literature: Polish Translations of French-Canadian Novels (2000-2016) The back cover of a book contains peritext added by the publisher, with a double function of information (about the author and the work) and invitation to read the book. That is why it also becomes the place where publishers decide on a certain image of the books. For this study, we have collected back cover texts from French-Canadian novels which were published in the Polish translation in the years 2000-2016, and we have considered them as a certain image of this literature given to the Polish reader by the publishers. These texts are also a source of information about this literature for the readers. The results of the analysis of the covers of 27 novels published in Poland in the studied period allow us to state that this image is deformed and simplified: it does not reflect the language and regional differences of Canadian literature today. The works themselves belong to such genres as fantasy, thriller or chick lit: they are attractive, pleasant to read, often awarded and adapted for the screen. The “cover image” of the French-Canadian literature given by Polish translations reflects rather the strategy of their publishers: it seems that their choices of translated works are directed mainly by economic prudence.

Abstract:

Abstract:

This thesis attempts to identify its specificities and explain its success through the analysis of the five novels centered on the character of the avvocato Guerrieri

Abstract:
This investigation about the secret in À la recherche du temps perdu attempts to show that the secret, as a fiction theme involving the very structure of the narrative, allows to seize the tense, within Proust’s work, between a positivist conception, both of the narration and of the meaning, broadly dependent upon the 19th century models of epistemology, and its questioning, which characterizes the fiction production of the 20th century. The analysis of figures and recurring patterns of the secret, related to the success of this notion in the history of ideas and novel writing forms at the turn of 19th and 20th centuries, shows that Proust’s imaginary world in la Recherche is marked by both his own myths and themes inherited from the detective and adventures novel. Then, the analysis of the narrative technique, which gives its enigmatic structure to the novel, makes it possible to identify the “hermeneutic journey” proposed to the reader in the footsteps of the hero-narrator: its dynamic, reflecting the emergence of an evidential paradigm accompanying the renewal of human sciences, is gradually undermined by the emergence of a different logic, based on the indeterminacy of meaning and the multiplicity of viewpoints. Lastly, the analysis of the generic and interpretative “entre-deux” shows that Proust’s work proposes an experience of reading which paves the way for a conception of interpretation based on the consideration of the textual virtualities involved by fictional writing

Abstract:
In her novel The Postcard, Anne Berest proposes the reconstruction of the identity of her maternal ancestors, the Rabinovitchs. The pretext which relaunches this search for identity and its fictionalization is none other than an anonymous postcard received in 2003 in his parents’ home. This card presents the image of the Opera and on the back are written four first names: Ephraïm, Emma, Noémie, Jacques, who died at Auschwitz in 1942. In 2019, Anne Berest and her mother set out to elucidate the questions surrounding this postcard; the investigation required by the fictionalization of biographical and chronological data is coupled with a quest for identity and memory. Under the guise of a thriller, the story presents the story of the Rabinovitchs doomed to exodus and, therefore, to new foundations, driven by the significant events of the 20th century. In the conquest of the right to likeness, two distinct levels are felt: the other’s view of the protagonists and the Frenchness of the writer. Finally, the fictional devices allow him to show that the past is migrant, as well as the desire for belonging and linguistic and sociocultural resemblance.
