<p>Celem artykułu jest próba analizy procesu transformacji baśni w thriller psychologiczny w grze komputerowej The Path. Punkt wyjścia do rozważań stanowi teoria strukturalna Vladimira Proppa, który poddał badaniom tradycyjne baśni, wyodrębniając ich elementy wspólne, takie jak funkcje i role postaci. Rosyjski strukturalista w swojej teorii jako kluczowe elementy opowieści uwypukla bohaterów i ich działania, istotne nie tylko z punktu widzenia teoretyków literatury, ale również badaczy podejmujących refleksję nad grami komputerowymi. Studium wykazuje, że funkcje i role bohaterów tradycyjnych baśni wyróżnione przez Proppa zostają w The Path zdeformowane: gra „schodzi” z wyznaczonej przez strukturę baśni ścieżki, tworząc lukę w gatunkowej przestrzeni, która zostaje wypełniona elementami właściwymi dla thrillera psychologicznego. Odwrócenie i deformacja funkcji oraz roli postaci baśniowych skutkuje przeobrażeniem opowiedzianej w grze historii w thriller. Owo przeobrażenie wydaje się niezwykle płynne dlatego, że baśń i thriller psychologiczny nie są całkowicie odmiennymi, wykluczającymi się gatunkami; przeciwnie – uzupełniają się wzajemnie. Drugi pokazuje i dopowiada to, co pierwszy przemilcza lub zataja.</p>

The topic of this study is Anxiety and Defense Mechanism as A Means of Constructing Psychological Thriller in Hawkins’ The Girl on the Train. The objectives of this study are to describe how anxiety and defense mechanism are described in Hawkins’ The Girl on the Train and to explain how anxiety and defense mechanism construct psychological thriller as represented in Hawkins’ The Girl on the Train. The object of the study is a novel entitled The Girl on the Train written by Paula Hawkins. This study is descriptive qualitative study by applying Freudian psychoanalytic theory. The data of the study were collected by reading, identifying, interpreting, and inventorying citations from the novel. Further, the data were analyzed based on Freudian psychoanalytic theory by describing anxiety and defense mechanism described in the novel. The data were also analysed by explaining how anxiety and defense mechanism construct psychological thriller. The results show there are three kinds of anxiety and six kinds of defense mechanism. Moreover, the results prove that those anxieties and defense mechanisms become a means of constructing psychological thriller since they make the characters suffer from psychological problem and become unreliable narrator, create plot twist, and make the novel become thrilling.

The research deals with the issue of genre hybridization in the novel “Silence – Chronicle of a Killer” written by a contemporary Austrian writer Thomas Raab. An examination of the novel's composition and structure, as a text in motion, has been accomplished in the article. The novel “Silence” is an excellent illustration of how the genre of adventure has been adapted to include elements of science fiction. This novel is a love tale, a rural life saga, a formation narrative, and a psychological thriller all in one. As a fictionalized account of the life of a serial murderer with hypersensitive hearing who became a legend for his mental torment and suffering, it serves both as a biography and a thriller. Novelist Raab uses elements from classic horror novels like Frankenstein, German romantics, in particular, G. Kleist, the tale of Casper Hauser, and detective novels like Friedrich Durrenmatt's "Promise" to tell the story of Casper Hauser's disappearance in his book. A new aesthetic experience may be formed at various degrees of identification ranging from naive perception to higher levels of literary reception. Concentration is required for poetic and philosophical substance. Michel Focalut's nomadism, marginality, and authoritarian power rhetoric have been discussed in this article. The novel's ultimate content has been disclosed as the aphesis torment, emotional sublimation, as the birth of an artwork and, at the same time, death of the author, who exposes discourses, accountable for creating texts that are allocated to him.

Abstract This article examines the construction of and contestation over the idea of the nation through contemporary popular cinema in India. Building on his experience of discussing the Bollywood spy thriller Raazi (2018) in an English class, the author proposes that “reading” the film in terms of gender and genre can not only help students apply modes of textual analysis to narratives in other media but also alert them to the location of such narratives within larger discursive frameworks of defining national identities. Raazi presents a critical and ideological counterpoint to the generic conventions of the spy thriller within the increasingly polarized sociopolitical context of the Indian subcontinent. The film presents an unlikely female protagonist as both the physical agent and the psychological subject of the violence integral to the “action” of an espionage film. It also interrogates the oppositional relation between the patriotic “self” and the foreign “other” that lies at the basis of the militaristic conception of the nation and ultimately reveals the shared human vulnerability of both to the traumatic effects of pursuing the idea(l) of nationalism at the expense of individual moral integrity. Thus a close reading of the film's narrative structure and conventions, as well as a critical engagement with the historical context of its production and reception, can be pedagogically fruitful ways of understanding and critiquing the processes through which a nation is collectively imagined into being.

This article looks at Edward Alexander, an American diplomat who served in Hungary between 1965 and 1969, and his various writings. An Armenian-American man of letters, Alexander served in psychological warfare in World War II, then joined cold war radios and later the Foreign Service. Our focus is on the years 1965-67, when he served as Press and Cultural Affairs Officer at the Budapest Legation. Available sources include his official diplomatic reports, his rather large Hungarian state security file, a lifetime interview conducted under the aegis of the State Department in the late 1980s, a book on Armenian history, and a semi-autobiographical intelligence thriller he penned in 2000. These sources allow for a complex evaluation of his performance in Hungary and of his writing skills on account of his attempt to fictionalize his own exploits.

Social inequality has continuously become a problem especially towards marginalized group. Such topic is presented in Todd Phillips latest psychological thriller, Joker (2019). Whilst other researches focus on the psychological aspect of the film, this study takes on the perspective of the sociological/socio-political aspect in the film which is social inequality. In analyzing the social inequality aspect of the film, this study uses theory of structural discrimination by Link, et al. which theorizes that laws, policies, or other practices. are discriminating a marginalized group. To analyze the film itself, the writers analyzed the mise-en- scène and cinematography aspects of the film. The purpose of this study is to find if government’s policies have any involvement of impact to the life of a mentally ill person. Method used for this analysis is qualitative data research. In analyzing the film, it is found that Fleck’s life as a mentally ill and poor person is deliberately sabotaged by the discriminative policies and laws applied in Gotham city. In conclusion, this film represents Joker as more than just a Batman’s main film but rather used as a vehicle to criticize the state of social inequality in the world.

<p><em>The film Tuan X is a fictional film with the theme of psychology. This film is very closely related to one's personal life. Films that tell about the condition of someone who is experiencing severe frustration so that his psychological was disturbed and it made him did things that are not normal. The production of </em><em>Tuan X</em><em> film is based on the concepts of directing, videography, editing, and sound that have been set before. From the film that was successfully created, it appears that gestures can be used to show a psychological picture of a character. The right gestures can be supported by repetition of movements so that it strengthens a character of the figure, so that the intensity of the tension / thriller of the story in reaching a climax is in accordance to the genre raised. Lawrence Osborne’s Beautiful Animals (2017) thematizes the arrival of refugees on Europe’s shores and the division of Europe into core and peripheral regions. The psychological thriller tells the story of two young wealthy white women whose daily routines of swimming and sunbathing are interrupted when they meet a Syrian refugee on a secluded beach. In this article, I argue that the novel overlays geographies of forced migration with those of Greek national history, myth, travel, crime, and violence. The murder committed on a Greek island compels readers to examine what might be considered the larger ‘crimes’ of Europe – exclusionary refugee policies, the meddling in Greek affairs, and the legacies of colonialism and imperialism. In doing so, the novel asks us to rethink the multiple meanings of the Mediterranean as holiday destination, deadly outer border, and Southern Other, both intra- and extra-European at the same time.

The thesis is a ten-page analysis on two films, Fatal Attraction and Lakeview Terrace. The thesis begins with a brief introduction to the horror genre and its subgenre in which the two films and original screenplay are categorized, psychological horror. It covers all the important elements of a film and screenplay: conflict, arc, goal, structure and plot. The thesis also consists of feminists’ reactions to Fatal Attraction, and examines whether the original 60- page screenplay helps or worsens the image of women. The screenplay also raises the question if having the villains need to be insane to prove a point. Further in the thesis is a description of the original screenplay Crimes of Passion and its main characters Jennifer, Alex and Keith. Jennifer, the heroine, becomes the target of scorned lover and police officer Keith. Alex, Keith’s rival, must protect Jennifer. The analysis ends with the restated questions the audience must have in mind and answer while reading the screenplay.

Магистерская диссертация посвящена мало изученной проблеме – эволюции психологического триллера как продукта аудиовизуального творчества. Работа состоит из Введения, трех глав, Заключения, Списка использованных источников и Приложения. Достоинством диссертации в теоретическом аспекте является анализ аудиовизуального творчества как структуры социально-культурной деятельности и аудиовизуальной основы кинообраза как специфики его психологического воздействия. В работе проведено научное исследование феномена психологического триллера в кино и его трансформация в эпоху постмодерна и в условиях современной массовой культуры XXI века. В современной науке эта тема практически не изучена, что заслуживает особого внимания. Интерес представляет и практическая составляющая магистерской диссертации, связанная с разработкой хронологического сайта «Психологический триллер в кино», включающего выбор платформы для размещения сайта, разработку общего дизайн-решения сайта, создания основной части сайта и «словаря» сайта.<br>The master's thesis is devoted to a little-studied problem – the evolution of a psychological thriller as a product of audiovisual creativity. The work consists of an Introduction, three chapters, a Conclusion, a List of References and an Appendix. The merit of the dissertation in the theoretical aspect is the analysis of audiovisual creativity as a structure of social and cultural activity and the audiovisual basis of the film image as the specificity of its psychological impact. The work carried out a scientific study of the phenomenon of psychological thriller in cinema and its transformation in the postmodern era and in the conditions of modern mass culture of the XXI century. In modern science, this topic is practically not studied, which deserves special attention. Of interest is the practical component of the master's thesis related to the development of a chronological site "Psychological Thriller in Cinema", including the choice of a platform for hosting the site, the development of a general design solution for the site, the creation of the main part of the site and the "dictionary" of the site.

Запоріжжя : ЗНУ, 2020. 90 с.<br>UA : Кваліфікаційна робота магістра «Поетикальна матриця роману І. Роздобудько «Пастка для жар-птиці» містить 90 сторінок. Для виконання кваліфікаційної роботи опрацьовано 52 наукових джерела.
Мета дослідження полягає в спробі системного дослідження роману поетикальної матриці роману І. Роздобудько «Пастка для жар-птиці».
У ході написання роботи виконані такі завдання:
- на основі наукової літератури здійснено характеристику поетики як будови та єдності текстових структур;
- розглянуто модель поетики художнього твору, визначено основні її компоненти, а також окреслено поняття поетикальної матриці;
- на основі жанрових характеристик художніх творів окреслено жанрові особливості роману І. Роздобудько «Пастка для жар-птиці»;
- визначено тематичний рівень твору і його проблематику, сюжет;
-проаналізовано особливості групування персонажів та їх характеристики відповідно до жанрової специфіки;
- розглянуто наративні структурі роману.
Об’єкт дослідження: роман І. Роздобудько «Пастка для жар-птиці».
Предмет дослідження: поетикальна матриця твору, що складається із жанрово-композиційних елементів, нарації та системи образів.
Методи дослідження. У роботі використано системний підхід, що передбачає поєднання історико-літературного, культурологічного, описового методів із елементами семіотики. З метою висвітлення особливостей художнього зображення внутрішнього світу персонажів прози І. Роздобудько використано теоретично-критичний, структурно-семіотичний, історико-генетичний, типологічний, історико-порівняльний методи наукового вивчення явищ художньої літератури.
Наукова новизна роботи полягає у тому, що було зроблено спробу здійснити системне дослідження поетикальної матриці. Для цього було розглянуто поняття поетики в українському та англомовному наукових дискурсах і з’ясовано основні компоненти поетики, а також запропоновано розуміння поетикальної матриці як поєднання поетикальної моделі із індивідуальним стилем автора. На основі існуючих різновидів жанру детективу встановлено приналежність роману до детективу «розгадки», психологічного трилеру та жіночого роману.
Сфера застосування. Робота може бути використана під час вивчення курсу вивчення курсів «Вступ до літературознавства», «Теорія літератури», «Сучасна українська література», спецкурсів із проблем сучасної масової літератури, а також під час написання курсових і дипломних робіт.<br>EN : Master’s thesis “The Poetical Matrix of the Novel “The Firebird’s Trap” by Iren Rozdobudko contains 90 pages. To fulfill the thesis 52 scientific sources were studied.
The aim of the work: the systematic study of the poetic matrix in the novel “The Firebird’s Trap” (“Pastka dlya zhar-ptytsi”) by Iren Rozdobudko.
During the study the following tasks were completed:
- based on the scientific literature, the characteristic of poetics as a structure and unity of textual structures was performed;
- the poetics model of the work of fiction was investigated, its main components were figured out, the concept of the poetic matrix was defined;
- based on the genre characteristics of the works of fiction, genre peculiarities of the novel “The Firebird’s Trap” (“Pastka dlya zhar-ptytsi”) by Iren Rozdobudko were described;
- the thematic level of the novel, its problematics and subject were defined;
- the grouping of characters and their characteristics according to the genre specifics were analyzed;
- the narrative structures of the novel were examined.
The object of study: the novel “The Firebird’s Trap” (“Pastka dlya zhar-ptytsi”) by Iren Rozdobudko
The subject of study: the poetic matrix of the novel, which consists of genre-compositional elements, narration and the system of images.
Research methods. In the work the systematic approach is used, which combines historico-literary, cultural and descriptive methods with the elements of semiotics. To highlight the peculiarities of artistic depiction of the characters’ inner world in the prose of Iren Rozdobudko, theoretical-critical, structural-semiotic, typological, historical-comparative methods of the scientific study of the phenomena of fiction were used.
Scientific novelty of the study is that it attempts to conduct systematic research of the poetic matrix. For this purpose, the concept of poetics was considered in Ukrainian and English scientific discourses and the basic components of poetics were defined, as well as the understanding of the poetic matrix as a combination of the poetic model with an individual style of the author was proposed. On the basis of the existing varieties of the detective genre, the novel has been identified as belonging to the detective “unraveling”, the psychological thriller and the women’s novel.
Application field. The results of the study can be used during the study of courses “Introduction to Literary Studies”, “Theory of Literature”, “Contemporary Ukrainian Literature”, special courses on problems of contemporary popular literature, as well as during writing term or diploma papers.

This chapter explores the production and reception history of a notable Cold War Soviet thriller, The Dead Season, directed by Savva Kulish, a former cameraman and collaborator of Mikhail Romm and Maiya Turovskaya on a famous documentary about life in the Third Reich, Ordinary Fascism. Kulish’s background and his own Jewish descent prompted him to adopt a highly serious approach to the story of a former Nazi war criminal who is now resident in “a certain Western country.” Rather than an exciting adventure story, the film became an exploration of psychological tension, as the discussion here makes clear.

This introductory chapter provides an overview of Christopher Nolan's Inception (2010). Inception blurs the distinctions between various genres. It is considered as science fiction although it does not contain many of the elements associated with the genre. It can also be identified as a kind of heist film, and the first part of the film, the extraction, certainly involves a complex robbery; but then the second part of the film, while having many of the trappings of a heist, involves putting something into a heavily guarded location rather than stealing from it. Moreover, the heist motifs and the film's character types are reminiscent of film noir. Inception can also be described as a psychological thriller and it deals with the subject of time and how dreams are related to the conscious and unconscious mind.

This chapter provides an archaeology of the ‘psycho-thriller’, which emerged as a named, self-identifying genre in the postwar period and was popularized by the films of Alfred Hitchcock, most notably Psycho (1960). Scholars have pointed out links back to American noir of the 1930s and 1940s, but Ascari goes further by presenting a full prehistory of the genre, arguing that it has roots in late-eighteenth- and nineteenth-century theories of the conflicted, often irrational mind. Beginning with William Godwin’s psychological philosophy, including its application in the novel Caleb Williams (1794), and ending with novels and films inspired by Freudian psychoanalysis, Ascari not only uncovers an alternative history of the genre that crosses boundaries between genres and media, but also articulates a theory of genre predicated on hybridization and mobility rather than outlived notions of origin, stasis and purity.

Ridley Scott wasn’t necessarily interested in directing a sequel to Silence of the Lambs, but he was talked into it by one of the most persuasive international producers, Dino De Laurentiis. Jodie Foster, who played the lead in that film, was approached to reprise her role for Hannibal but took exception to the way her character had evolved in the later movie. Her character, Clarice Starling, was played by Julianne Moore. Here the focus was strongly on the Hannibal Lecter character, again brilliantly played by Anthony Hopkins. Where Silence of the Lambs was a psychological thriller, Hannibal is more of an out-and-out horror film. There are many scenes of explicit gore and violence, difficult to watch at times. The film received poor reviews. Ridley Scott did not attend the premiere because his mother had passed away at age ninety-five.

An open ending and Polanski’s intended ambiguity make Repulsion a psychological thriller that exceeds the norms of what he deemed a “cheap horror film.” But while the movie was greeted with generally positive appraisal, Polanski himself still viewed the production as “an artistic compromise,” deriding its technical quality in particular. Still, there can be no denying Repulsion’s reputation within the horror genre, as a unique feature in its own right and as it aligns with related horror precursors. However much he may have looked down upon the horror film generally, Polanski knew the rules of the game, and in Repulsion, he managed to adapt his unique sense of scenic configuration, tension, timing and characterization to form one of the genre’s most unique and outstanding entries. In doing so, Polanski imbued in the film an assortment of his trademark gestures, many of which would be most apparent in the remaining two films of his Apartment Trilogy, films that in many ways not only define Polanski’s cinema at large, but also established his place in the annals of horror film history.

The goal of this paper is to explore the alternative modes of representing Shakespeare’s Hamlet in McEwan’s novel Nutshell and to determine the purpose of including Shakespearean references in the latter. We shall explore Harold Bloom’s views on the anxiety of influence as opposed to Julia Kristeva’s notion of intertextuality and Linda Hutcheon’s theory of adaptation, in which intertextuality is used to present previous literary works solely as material for constructing a new postmodern literary framework. By analyzing intertextual relationships, this paper shows that Nutshell is a postmodern adaptation of Hamlet. The very form of narration chosen by McEwan, namely that of an unborn fetus, raises the question of the reliability of the narrator. The main source of unreliability, apart from the age and limited viewpoint of the narrator, is the wide spectrum of genres displayed in the novel, varying from a psychological thriller, to a murder mystery to a fantasy novel. The novel may thus be seen as a postmodern alternative in two manners: as a rewriting of Shakespeare’s Hamlet with the aim of presenting contemporary readers with an alternative to a well-known story and as a utilization of an alternative narrative technique that culminates in a questionably reliable narrator.

Tourist experiences are shaped by the complexities of the individual visitor’s psychological factors, and it is widely known that tourists anticipate a positive experience from every trip made. Yet, the fact remains that travel is inextricably linked to the issues of geography and awareness and a misinterpretation of the attributes of a destination may lead to unlikely expectations that affect the entire experience. With the dynamic and interactive visualisation features offered by augmented reality (AR) on mobile phones and other smart handheld devices, this technology is viewed as being capable of closing the gap between tourist expectations and reality, thereby improving how tourists engage with their surroundings. Despite the known potential of this relatively new technology, its actual acceptance among the users is still minimal, especially in the Malaysian context. Considering this limitation, this study examined the extent of AR utilisation and its ability to influence the development of a tourists’ travel experience. The ‘Iskandar.my’ mobile AR app was used in this research to evaluate the tourists’ expectations, perception and satisfaction with the utilisation of this software platform to add value to their travel experience. The findings indicated that there was a statistically significant differences in the respondents’ experiences before and after using the AR content on the mobile app. The thrill associated with the use of this advanced technology was the primary factor in their satisfaction with the AR function. However, the lack of variety in the attractions covered, as well as the app’s currently limited offerings, were noted as factors that could affect the ‘Iskandar. my’ apps competitiveness with regard to other travel-related apps. Therefore, this researcher recommends that the developer of the app improve the design and service dimensions of the app to meet users’ travel needs.
