Abstract:
BACKGROUND. The relaxation of the global conditions, mainly but not reduced to the introduction of the Internet, and the demanding competitive pressures have triggered the expansionary phenomenon of startups that seek to compete internationally right after its birth. This urge for a mechanism to facilitate the internationalisation process, namely the business model. In this regard, there is a need to elaborate on the field of the business model in combination to the internationalization literature, which has tended to develop in isolation. PURPOSE. The purpose of this master thesis is to expand the knowledge about the process of designing the business model of a new international venture and how the drivers of internationalisation affect this process. METHODOLOGY. The research problem was identified by exploring two major streams of theory, the business model and the internationalisation, which were developed jointly in a visual representation. In the next step, from two Sweden-based international new ventures, named Againity AB and MIMSI Materials AB, empirical information was collected from diverse stakeholders. The technique was qualitative research method, which was scrutinized following a process model approach. Finally, a model proposition was constructed by analysing the realities of the practical and theoretical phenomenon to serve the purpose of enhancing knowledge. RESULT. The BMD process is composed by three stages, namely initiating, generating and refining, of iterative and interdependent nature. Each driver of internationalization, when scrutinized using the empirical realities of the INVs, tends to have different influential roles at different stages of the business model. This is integrated into a conceptual model of the key internationalization drivers and BMD stages, which reflects the strategic fit from which new ventures benefit.

Abstract

This article investigates the complex issue of aid, and differs from other attempts at evaluating the outcomes and policies of aid since this evaluation is solely based on the policies of the donor countries. It investigates if, and how well, the world´s two greatest aid donors, The European Developmental Fund (EDF) and the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) responds to recent research and the need for change in this policy area in respect to Sub- Saharan African states.

A Finnish proverb says that the sauna is the most democratic space in the world . Here, we dismantle our vestments of social status and relax in a distinct social space where everyone shares the same basic needs of comfort and the refreshment of body and soul. This is the ideal condition of Finnish sauna. In the cultural climate of New England, a sauna that facilitates this condition must be reinvented. I have designed a sauna adapted for the MIT Campus. Here, through the interaction of the bathers, a social dynamic similar to the Finnish can emerge, also for those who do not share the cultural understanding of Finns. The Hybrid New England/Finnish Sauna was open for public bathing on MIT Campus, from May the 6th until May the 22nd , 1999. Abstract:
Mardi Gras draws millions of tourists to New Orleans yearly, contributing to the economy of the city. Visitors soon discover the thrill of catching "throws" tossed to paradegoers by members of parade organizations' riding floats. For tourists and locals alike, throws become the cultural currency of New Orleans during Carnival. Beads, doubloons, coconuts, cups and other throws develop an inherent value, enticing crowds. People esteem throws enough to compete for them, with varying levels of intensity, along parade routes and on the streets of the French Quarter. The purchase of throws by Carnival krewes also brings revenue into New Orleans. Scholars have written many studies on Mardi Gras, including studies on individual organizations, tourism and economy. However, no study examines the history of Mardi Gras throws. This thesis seeks to fill that void, and establishes an earlier date for the first time beads were thrown from floats.

This study attempted to explore the phenomenon of free throw shooting under pressure. The participants in the study were 10, Division III college basketball players who agreed to take part in an interview centered around free throw shooting. The data were gathered from the responses of the players, using a semi-structured interview, developed by the researcher with the suggestions and approval of an expert basketball panel, comprised of sport psychology professors, NBA sport psychologists, basketball coaches, and former players. Four of the interviews were done in person, while the other six were done over the phone. The interviews were transcribed and coded using a constant comparative method described by Boeije (2002). This entailed a process of open coding, which resulted in 65 codes. Of these 65 codes, 57 codes were assigned into eight categories during a process of axial coding. These categories were as follows; routine, practice, focus, pressure, pressure management skills, confidence, clutch factors, and non-clutch factors. Confidence was technically a sub-category of clutch factors, but was deemed large and separate enough to be its own category. The coding of interviews went through a process of inter-rater reliability via an independent coder. The independent coder and the researcher agreed on over 86% of the coded responses. The disagreements were discussed and a mutual understanding was established. Players emphasized the importance of a pre-shot routine, especially under high-pressure circumstances. Players discussed the importance of practice in preparation for high-pressure free throws. Players gave their level of focus on task-relevant and task-irrelevant stimuli when attempting free throws, both under normal circumstances and under pressure circumstances. Players revealed pressure management strategies that they used to aid in the performance of attempting high pressure free throws. Possible links to clutch performance were explored by the researcher.

Abstract:

The purpose of this study was to examine high school students conceptions of young people who run away or get thrown out of their homes. Earlier research shows that this group of young people often come from families were physical, psychological and sexual abuse is reappearing factors. They often face a life of homelessness, drug abuse and prostitution. Still there is little research done about this phenomenon and what kind of help and support these young people could need. This study was done in a qualitative approach with the use of focus groups. The results were analyzed through the theoretical views of socialconstructivism and theorizing childhood and were also compared with earlier research. The results showed that about half of the participants had in some point in their life run away from home. They expressed that they thought that there are many young people who run away or get thrown out of their homes each year and that many of them probably don´t come to the knowledge of the social services. Their thoughts of what risks youths may encounter on the streets accord with results from earlier research. They also think that friends are the most valuable in terms of help and support.

Abstract:

This thesis has been written within the research project “Tillfälligt Uppbrott”, which concerns youths who have run away or been thrown out of their homes. The project is based on a na-tional poll among more than 3000 high school students. Our purpose has been to study youths who have left home and their own experiences. We have looked at all the question-naires in which the youths stated they had left home and focused on their answers to five open questions. The answers have been categorized in themes and the results have been put up against a certain amount of background variables. The concentration is foremost qualitative but there are also features of quantitive data. In our analysis we have used the new sociology of childhood which is based on social constructionism. In our result we have learned what the youths see as the reasons for the breakups, what they missed, how they provided for them-selves and what happened to them during the time away from home, as well as gotten exam-ples on how the experience affected them, both positively and negatively.

The purpose of this study is to examine how young people with experience of running away and/or getting thrown out look upon and understand the phenomenon. Another purpose of thestudy is to examine how the youth evaluate the help and support they did or did not receive at the time of their experience, as well as to examine what the ultimate help and support would be according to them. The study was done in a qualitative approach with the use of focus groups and individual interviews. The results were analyzed through the perspective of the ‘sociology of childhood’. Results show, in accordance with earlier studies on the subject, that the youth run away or are thrown out from homes where constant conflicts as well as psychological, physical and sexual abuse are recurring factors. The youth expressed that social services do not listen to them and that their reports of abuse and neglect are not taken seriously. Results further show that the youth consider help finding a new home as well as emotional and economical support to be appropriate kinds of help in this situation. They stress that help and support efforts have to be individually adjusted.

Abstract:
Feedback, training schedule and individual differences between learners influence the acquisition of motor skills and were investigated in the present thesis. A special focus was on brain processes underlying feedback processing and motor preparation, investigated using event related potentials (ERPs). 120 participants trained to throw at virtual targets and were tested for retention and transfer. Training schedule was manipulated with half of the participants practicing under high contextual interference (CI) (randomized training) and the other half under low CI (blocked training). In a follow-up online study, 80% of the participants completed a subset of the Raven advanced progressive matrices, testing reasoning ability. Under high CI, participants’ reasoning ability was related to higher performance increase during training and higher subsequent performance in retention and transfer. Similar effects in late stages of low CI training indicate, that variability is a necessary prerequisite for beneficial effects of reasoning ability. We conclude, that CI affects the amount of variability of practice across the course of training and the abstraction of rules (Study 1). Differential learning effects on ERPs in the preparatory phase foster this interpretation. High CI shows a larger decline in attention- and control-related ERPs than low CI. CNV amplitude, as a measure of motor preparatory activity, increases with learning only, when attention demands of training and retention are similar, as in low CI training. This points to two parallel mechanisms in motor learning, with a cognitive and a motor processor, mutually contributing to CNV amplitude (Study 2). In the framework of the “reinforcement learning theory of the error related negativity”, we showed, that positive performance feedback is processed gradually and that this processing is reflected in varying amplitudes of reward positivity (Study 3). Together these results provide new insights on motor learning.

Abstract:
Pottery is a kind of craft which requires retentive training. The only way to achieve each technique is to practice in repetition till the skill has been absorbed into the hands and body of the practitioner. The most obvious problematic achievement in pottery skill is ‘wheel throwing’ technique. With the long history in straight forward training, one needs to free the mind and allow oneself be a ‘copy machine’ in order to learn the technique properly. The paradox of traditional practice of having mastered the skill, but could not break through, is one of typical obstruction to many crafters. ‘Flood’ as theme for investigation in clay was an attempt to set up a method in order to find the ‘breaking through’ in term of ‘thinking’ and ‘making’ for traditional pottery practitioner to be relevant in the pace of contemporary surrounding. The investigation was planned to de‐familiarize my perception over my tradition and practice, and it was an eye‐opening to how I positioned myself personally and professionally to the discipline, the society and the world.

Full text
Abstract:
As the wind energy sector expands into areas with colder climate, the problem with ice throw will increase. Due to a rotor diameter of more than 120 meters for a typical modern turbine with an effect of 3.3 MW, the separated ice fragment will get a high initial velocity, and therefore, they will also be thrown a long distance. Ice throw might therefore be a large safety risk for the people, who are staying in surrounding areas to wind turbines. A ballistic ice throw model has been developed to be able to investigate how far the ice fragments can be thrown from a wind turbine. The work was divided into two parts, one sensitivity analysis and one real case study. In the sensitivity analysis, the influence of eight important parameters was investigated. The results from this part show that changes in the parameters initial radius and angle position, and mass and shape of the ice fragments have a significant influence on the throwing distance both lateral and downwind. The wind speed has only a significant influence on the downwind throwing distance, but this is quite large. A maximum throwing distance of 239 meters downwind the wind turbine was achieved with U=20 m/s, r=55 m and θ=45°. While including the lift force, a maximum downwind distance of 350 meter was achieved. However, the uncertainties about the shape of the ice fragment make these results quite uncertain. In the real case study, ice throws were simulated by letting the ice throw model run with modeled meteorological data for a wind farm in northern Sweden. The wind farm consists of 60 wind turbines, and the probability for that an ice fragment will land in a square of 1*1m was calculated around each turbine. To be able to calculate this probability, a Monte Carlo analysis was necessary in which a large number of ice fragments were separated. The result shows a large correlation between the landing positions of the ice fragments and the wind direction. Due to the fact that the wind farm is located in a complex terrain, the shape and density of the probability field vary among different parts of the farm. Especially in the southern part of the wind farm, the probability field will have the highest density and largest extension to the northeast of the turbines due to a prevailing wind direction during ice throw events from southwest.

Omar, Nurhidayah. "Technique in overarm throwing." Thesis, Loughborough University, 2016. https://dspace.lboro.ac.uk/2134/33408.

Full text
Abstract:
A computer simulation model of overarm throwing was developed to gain an understanding of the mechanics of overarm throwing and applied to fastball pitching. The movement was modelled as a three-dimensional system using eight rigid segments, with torque generators for upper trunk extension/flexion, upper trunk external/internal rotation, scapula external/internal rotation, right upper arm flexion/extension, right upper arm adduction/abduction and right upper arm external/internal rotation. The baseball was attached at the distal end of the hand segment using a linear spring. The model was personalised to a pitcher so that simulation outputs could be compared with the pitcher s performance. Kinematic data of overarm pitching were obtained using a Vicon Motion Analysis System and maximal voluntary joint torques were estimated using average maximal voluntary joint torques from previous studies. A torque-driven model was used to determine a specific set of maximal voluntary joint torques by varying T_o while matching three performances concurrently. The torque-driven model was successfully evaluated, and shown to produce realistic movements, with mean overall differences between simulations and performances of 13% for three trials. The model was applied to further the understanding of the mechanics of overarm throwing. Optimising the technique of the pitcher with the simulation model increased the ball speed by 14% with more upper trunk flexion, scapula internal rotation and right upper arm external rotation used. The optimised technique showed proximal-to-distal sequencing, and increasing strength by 5% gave a slight improvement in performance of 0.6%. Varying strength by ±30% resulted in an increase of 2.7% in ball speed although not all joints used the 30% increase in strength. In summary, although increasing strength resulted in an increase in ball speed, technique variables such as upper trunk flexion and upper arm external rotation are arguably the most important factors for throwing fast.

Buddhadev, Harsh. "Mechanisms Affecting Bench Press Throw Performance while Using a Counter-Balanced Smith Machine." Thesis, University of North Texas, 2011. https://digital.library.unt.edu/ark:/67531/metadc67963/.

Full text
Abstract:
The use of a counter-balance weight system of a Smith machine affects measures of bench press throw performance. Twenty-four men performed bench press throws at 30% of their one-repetition maximum under four different conditions: 1) counter-balance and rebound movement (RC), 2) no counter-balance and rebound movement (RNC), 3) counter-balance and concentric only movement (CC), and 4) no counter-balance and concentric only movement (CNC). Peak power, force, and concentric and eccentric velocities were measured using a linear accelerometer; and peak ground reaction force (GRF) was measured using a forceplate. Peak measures for concentric and eccentric velocities showed that NCB> CB and RBT > CBT. Peak GRF measures showed CB > NCB and RBT > CBT. The lower performance measures for CB were likely due to an increase in the net external load when the barbell accelerates faster than the gravitational constant causing the counter-balance weight becomes ineffective.

The aim of this project is to develop an android application for managing and organizing activities of various departments in ThrockMorton building at K-State. Mobile application development is a growing trend in computer industry. With the advancements in mobile technologies and efficient 3G and 4G wireless communications, a number of desktop applications are now becoming available as mobile applications. Android has the leading market share in the entire smart phone OS available. It gives lot of space for creative development as it is open source. There are various discussion forums and official android development support websites that encourage mobile and tablet application development. The ThrockMobile application provides many features for managing inventory at ThrockMorton in Kansas State University. The features include scanning a barcode of an asset and displaying its details and can even edit any of the fields if needed. The access to this application is restricted to only those devices whose device id is existing in the database. One can request access to the application through an email client integrated with the application. Look up feature lets you look up for a user, room, ip-address and asset. Preferences module lets you enter the details of the server from which data is to be requested. This application has been tested on android devices of varying screen sizes and android OS versions. The application serves requests at an average rate of 1.5sec/request, which is above the industry average time. I mentioned in detail the reason for the above performance average times and as future enhancements I have discussed the possible solutions.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to gather insights about the thoughts, feelings, and knowledge children had about the skill of throwing. Interviews, conducted with 54 children enrolled in two different schools, served as the primary data collection source. Information concerning their knowledge of the biomechanical throwing cues was gathered using a written test. The children were involved in two different physical education programs. One physical education program was taught using the skills theme approach and the other used a traditional approach. Questions guiding the study included asking the children how they felt about how they were learning to throw, what they liked and disliked about their throwing experiences in their physical education classes, and how important they thought it was to learn to throw. Children were also asked to describe and demonstrate the correct way to throw a ball. Assertions were formed using interpretive research. These assertions framed and organized the results section of the study. Results indicated that the children taught using the skills themes approach were more knowledgeable about the skill of throwing and they attributed their throwing knowledge to their physical education teacher. The children taught using a traditional approach showed little knowledge about throwing and they relied on others, not their physical education teacher, to teach them about throwing. Additional results revealed that all of the children said throwing was an important skill to learn and the way to improve throwing performance was to practice. Implications for teaching throwing are offered.

Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to compare the effectiveness of two free throw shooting methods, the Ed Palubinskas Method (PM) and the Free Shoot Method (FSM), and their ability to improve free throw shooting accuracy. The experimental group, using the PM, and the control group, using the FSM, shot the same amount of free throws over a 13 week period. Subjects were 33 male intermediate basketball students at Brigham Young University. Subjects in both groups shot 26 free throws twice a week. Subjects were tested once every other week by shooting and recording the amount made out of nine attempts. There was no significant improvement for trials for both groups over the 13 weeks (F=1.583, p=.154). There was also no significant difference between groups (F=.445, p=.510) nor any interaction between groups (F=.642, p=.696). There was no significant difference in free throw shooting accuracy between the PM and FSM for the selected groups.

Abstract:
How people perform tasks and under what circumstances they perform them optimally has been a fascination for humanity for a long time and more particularly whether people perform better or worse under pressure. In this paper, I try to find out whether people perform better or worse when there is pressure. The data used is the free throw percentages for teams of the Swedish basketball leagues “Svenska basketligan” and “Svenska Superettan” for both men and women 2003-2019. I then investigate if the teams perform worse or better when games have a lot of pressure. I use definitions of pressure such as the size of the audience, if the game was close in terms of points and whether it was a playoff game. The findings are that for certain definitions of pressure, such as if the game was close and the size of the audience, players performed worse.

Abstract:
Nyckelord: Femininitet, Game of Thrones, populärkultur, representation, kvinnlig identitet, performativitet.

Abstract:
Kinematic analysis of basketball shooting is evolving, however the effects of fatigue on free throw shooting have not been studied. Therefore the effects of fatigue on the kinematics of free throw shooting among elite male basketball players was assessed. Ten healthy male collegiate basketball players participated in the study. Resting and fatigue heart rates of the participants were measured. After a 15 minute warm-up period, markers were placed on seven locations on the shooting arm&rsquo
s side upper and lower extremities. The free throw shots were recorded with two digital cameras at a speed of 60 frames/s at a stereoscopic position. Data were analyzed with the photogrammetry technique. Each participant performed free throw shots (pre-fatigue condition) until the two successful and two unsuccessful shots were collected. Then participants completed a fatigue protocol, which included sprints and squat jumping, until reaching their volitional exhaustion and free throw shots were repeated (post-fatigue condition). The elbow, trunk, knee and ankle joint angles were measured. Successful and unsuccessful shots were compared for pre- and post-fatigue conditions. The results demonstrated that fatigue did not affect free throw shooting and there was no significant joint angle difference (p>
.05) between successful and unsuccessful shots (p>
.05). It was concluded that fatigue does not affect the kinematics of free throw shooting of healthy male collegiate basketball players and there were no differences in the kinematics of selected joint angles for successful and unsuccessful free throw shots.

Abstract:
The purpose of the study was to examine the effects of an external focus of attention on the learning of dart throwing at three different focus reminder frequencies (every two, every four and every ten trials). Twenty-four male and female subjects were randomly assigned to one of three groups. Subjects threw darts at a circular target 60 times over two days while getting a reminder of their intended external focus at the three different reminder frequencies. Five-day delayed retention and transfer tests were conducted to assess learning, each consisting of five trials. The target was comprised of five concentric circles, with the center zone worth five points and the outer-most zone worth one point. Target scores were used for statistical analysis. Findings show that the groups given a reminder after every fourth and tenth trial perform better during acquisition (F=13.61; p<0.001). Furthermore, the group that received a reminder after every tenth trial performed the best during the retention test. Although, the high variability within groups may have prevented more significant differences between reminder frequency groups in the retention and transfer test results, it is evident that less-frequent reminders result in better performance and learning of dart throwing.

Abstract:
Currently, municipal solid waste is a major global environmental problem. One of the many issues in the management of this relates to the difficulties in using methods of effective pricing, which would encourage citizens to adopt attitudes that result ultimately in the reduction of waste production. The EU and national law are considering the introduction of tariffs that appropriately reflect the costs of managing these services to end-users. It's intended to introduce a tariff that supports the costs of the service as an economic and educational instrument, with the objective of managing the financial resources effectively. The analysis of the Portuguese municipal waste sector shows a mismatch between costs and revenues from service. Having looked at the issues of efficiency and equity, we have concluded that the tariff of MSW does not meet the requirements of economic efficiency. On the one hand the fee charged does not meet the "benefit principle" and in addition, technically the current regulatory model discourages the efficiency of services. As for equity, the law includes the "principle of affordability," which states that the tariff must meet the financial capacity of end-users. Finally, we examined the PAYT system (Pay-as-You-Throw), where it was found that this system was developed in order to meet the criteria of efficiency and equity. However, the implementation of a PAYT system is enormously complex and expensive, resulting in caution when Municipalities are considering this as an optio

Abstract:
PURPOSE: To examine the effects of an overreaching week followed by a 3-week taper (ORT) on DI collegiate throwers after 8 weeks of in-season training. METHODS: Seven throwers (5 male, 2 female) (20.8 ± 1.1 years, 182.9 ± 7.6 cm, 100.6 ± 22.2 kg) were recruited for the study. Throwing performance (TP) was normalized across events using z-scores calculated from the top 500 throws/year in DI over the past 5 years (-1.28 ± 0.99). Athletes were tested on measures of vastus lateralis muscle thickness (MT) using B-mode ultrasound, countermovement jump peak power with 0kg (CMJPP0) on a force platform, overhead shot put throw (OHT) at baseline (T1), pre-taper (T2) and post-taper (T3). TP was measured at a conference meet and championships. Training load (TL=session RPE·duration) and strength training volume-load (VL) were monitored for 12 weeks at all training sessions and competitions. One-way repeated measures ANOVA and paired sample t-tests were used for analysis with alpha level set at p"0.05. RESULTS: There was a statistical reduction in weight training VL (d=1.21, 90% CI [0.58, 1.8], p=0.01) and TL (d=0.96 [0.26, 1.7], p=0.04) between in-season (T1 to T2) and OR-T (T2 to T3) training phases. There were statistical time effects for MT (p=0.02), CMJPP0 (p=0.02), and TP (p=0.04). Post-hoc analysis revealed statistical improvements in MT (T1-T2: d=0.28 [0.11, 0.45], p=0.02), CMJPP0 (T2-T3: d=0.27 [0.1, 0.44], p=0.02), OHT (T2-T3: d=0.49 [0.16, 0.82], p=0.03) and TP (T2-T3, d=0.57 [0.22, 0.93], p=0.02). CONCLUSIONS: The OR-T appeared to augment TP at conference championships and national ranking. Collegiate throwers may benefit from an OR-T phase where TL and VL are exponentially reduced prior to an important competition.

Abstract:
The life and fate of Maximilian I, the last emperor of Mexico, has attracted a substantial amount of research since his death in 1867. However, these works either only deal with the last few years of Maximilian’s life, from his candidature for the Mexican throne to his death at the hands of the Mexican liberals, or with other aspects of his life such as his time as governor of Lombardy-Venetia. Thus the main aim of this thesis is to offer a biography of Maximilian, which will not only look at Maximilian’s reign as emperor of Mexico but will also examine the Habsburg aspect of the story. It is thus necessary to look at the extent to which his Habsburg upbringing, his education and his experiences as governor of Lombardy-Venetia shaped his idea of kingship; how his travels and his time in Italy conditioned him to regard the “other” in a certain imperial way; and how all these essentially Habsburg experiences and ideas played a part in his failure and demise in Mexico. This thesis will thus aim to give a rounded picture the life and death of Maximilian I by examining his upbringing, his education, and his experiences in the navy and in Lombardy-Venetia. For without an understanding of these it is impossible to fully comprehend Maximilian’s actions in Mexico.

The judo athletes must not only suffer from repeated, boring, hard-working uchikomi, randori, and fall practice, but also must endure the physical pain and ordeal. Psychologically, they have to bear all kinds of frustrations and failures. When they play the game, they only have one chance. Within a few minutes, if there has any accidence, everything will be nothing. The athletes have to be able to keep fighting, and overcome every difficulty. Those psychological energy and quality always determine whether judo athletes can persist in this field for a long time, or even participate in the international arena. The research investigates the judo athlete who did not study in the athletic class and how to overcome all disadvantages to cultivate the courage of not being afraid of falling, and finally participated in the international competitions to win glory for the country. The investigation carries on the research through combining self-narration with document analysis, and hopes to provide references for the training of athletes in relevant units and academic circles. The following are three conclusions: Firstly, the researcher can become an excellent national judo athlete with a background of non-traditional training is because of a natural body advantage and the encouragement from the coach, so that he could cultivate the courage of not being afraid of falling. Secondly, during the process of training, the significance and influence of judo gave researcher a better future. Thirdly, the factors that researcher did not give up the judo in the sport career are personal willpower, belief value of the promotion, and the perseverance of being not afraid of falling.

Larcombe, Andrew. ""It was like the gauntlet was thrown down" : the No! to APEC story." Thesis, 2000. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/10283.

Full text
Abstract:
Ad hoc social movement coalitions are made up of diverse groups that come together to maximise the use of limited resources. Once formed, they face a dilemma. Coalition logic holds that given the limited time frame and instrumental objectives of the organisation, resources should be disproportionately invested in the visible sphere of action. However, this instrumental emphasis ignores the need to invest resources in the 'submerged' sphere of membership intercommunication. As a result tensions which have their root in divergent ideologies, traditions and histories of resistance can threaten the coalition's collective identity. This thesis is about one such organisation, the No! To APEC (NTA) coalition, one of three groups that made up the movement to oppose the APEC Economic Leader's Meeting in Vancouver held in November 1997. NTA, made up of small leftwing grassroots groups, built a campaign around resistance to "imperialist globalisation." It organised community education, an international conference and a march and rally. Although it succeeded in meeting its objectives, a fracture occurred between the largest and most consolidated member group and the other unconsolidated grouping made up of individuals and representatives of small organisations. The fracture caused a disconnection between the local and the international priorities set by the organisation at its outset. In this study I examine the process that led to this outcome. In particular I identify the importance of establishing a capacity for reflexively monitoring the actions and interactions of members. While consensus is not a pre-requisite for solidarity, disputes arising from different perspectives and membership tactics may jeopardise organisational unity. Providing a limited space for evaluating conflicting validity claims and organisational dynamics may help to preserve unity during the active phase of a coalition's mobilisation. The methods used to obtain data for this study were participant observation and interviewing. I spent six months as an activist-researcher with the coalition and I interviewed activists from the three main APEC opposition groups. Although the main focus of this study is on the political and organisational evolution of the NTA coalition, I broaden the discussion to argue that ad hoc coalitions play an important role in generating 'social capital' or 'social movement connectivity.' Social solidarity generated in the course of short-term political action increases the potential for further action mobilisation in social movement networks and communities. In the final part of the thesis I review literature on globalisation and social movements. Combined with what has been learned about coalitions in the previous chapters, this exercise provides a context for examining the APEC opposition movement and, by extension, the prospects for building transnational movements and a counter-hegemonic historical bloc against imperialist globalisation.

Abstract:
abstract: Toward the ambitious long-term goal of developing a robotic circus, this thesis addresses key steps toward the development of a ground robot that can catch a ball. Toward this end, we examine nonlinear quadratic drag trajectories for a tossed ball. Relevant least square error fits are provided. It is also shown how a Kalman filter and Extended Kalman filter can be used to generate estimates for the ball trajectory. Several simple ball intercept policies are examined. This includes open loop and closed loop policies. It is also shown how a low-cost differential-drive research grade robot can be built, modeled and controlled. Directions for developing more complex xy planar intercept policies are also briefly discussed. In short, the thesis establishes a foundation for future work on developing a practical ball catching robot.

Many data and network applications for mobile and wireless networks cause disruptions in communications where traditional Internet architectures fail to ensure end-to-end connections due to intermittent connectivity, limited transmission range and low nodal density. The delay-tolerant networking (DTN) technology is introduced to deal with these problems. Contrary to traditional computer networks and MANETs, the message forwarding in delay-tolerant networks adopts the store-carry-and-forward approach to send messages to destinations when nodes have any opportunistic contacts with others in a network. Among the approaches for routing protocols in DTNs, the strategy of deploying the stationary relay nodes called “thrown boxes” is considered for increasing message delivery probability and reducing the message overhead efficiently. Till now, few studies have provided comprehensive analysis models and routing solutions for thrown-box-based network paradigms in the DTN research field. This thesis addresses the efficiency on message forwarding over heterogeneous nodes in DTNs. The technical content of this thesis includes three parts. Firstly, this study considers the deployment of thrown boxes that can assist in message delivery in delay-tolerant networks. A utility-based algorithm is applied to make the message forwarding decision between two nodes whenever they are in contact. Secondly, this study introduces the adaptation of absorbing Markov chain to develop an analytical framework to quantify and predict the performance of the proposed algorithm. Specifically, this framework is able to map an optimization problem over the presence of thrown box into a Markov chain over the relevant solution space. The contact between two nodes can dictate the chain transition probability and be used to advance the finding of an optimal solution by following neighboring solutions in chain. Finally, this study runs simulations to evaluate the proposed scheme in terms of the message overhead ratio and message delivery probability. Performance results show that the proposed algorithm performs better than other popular algorithms.

Abstract:
This research seeks to determine the necessary conditions for the United States to host another Olympic Games. To lay the foundation for my research, I historically trace the declining number of cities bidding for the Olympics. While exogenous factors such as political protests, terrorist acts, and boycotts contribute to a decline in the number of candidate cities from 1968 to 1984, modern disinterest in hosting the Olympics is motivated by endogenous dynamics derived from the bidding process. To determine how the bidding process affects the likelihood of hosting the Olympics and uncover the roots of successful bids, I analyze four case studies of former United States bids. These case studies include: Denver’s withdrawn bid for the 1976 Winter Olympics, Los Angeles’ successful bid for the 1984 Games, Boston’s relinquished bid for the 2024 Olympics, and consequentially, Los Angeles’ bid for the 2024 Olympics. I argue the structure of the bidding process inherently favors special interests with the most to gain from hosting the Games at the expense of the city as a whole. Stemming from the central condition of public support, I deduce six underlying conditions that are pivotal for successful bids: 1) the use of existing facilities and infrastructure; 2) absence of opposition groups; 3) private funding; 4) ‘insurance’ measures against cost overruns; 5) alignment of Olympic plans and urban development; and 6) greater use of the region. These conditions do not guarantee a successful Olympic bid, but are fundamental for the Olympic Games to return to the United States.

This research probes into the existing baseball Throw-Target Toy and the organizational design and electromechanical principles of toys on the market. To address shortcomings and deficiencies, new types of toys that can be thrown are analyzed. Mobile phones with good man-machine interface design are popular in Taiwan. This product uses a JAVA software platform, combined with the Bluetooth built into mobile phones to wirelessly transmit information to the mobile phone. The game interface is like the new baseball target toy with a mobile phone button to help users operate it effectively. When the goal board is hit, the Bluetooth device transmits information to the mobile phone and to carry out game program calculations. A mobile phone device is used in game interface. This toy explores relationships between the toy controls and the man-machine interface. It proves that the toy can be wirelessly controlled through a mobile phone. This study analyzed the structure of the whole machine, information structure, and electronics. The experiment proves this is the best design for a hand-held device that combines toy functions with Bluetooth wireless transmission, software analysis and wireless mobile phone control. People will enjoy the toy because of the unique interface, and the study describes how to commercialize the reference designed.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of task constraint of ball size on learning the over hand throwing skills which the diameter of the ball is larger than the width of hand. 36 4th grad elementary school boys participated as in this s the learners. They were divided into three groups for practice (large ball, small and control group). The throwing accuracy and movement patter were recorded before, during and after 6 weeks of practice (totally 120 minuets). The results showed that participants in large ball and small ball groups revealed significant improvement in accuracy and movement pattern. However, the difference among groups did not get illustrated evidence. In conclusion, the task constraint of ball size has positive effect on learning the overhand throw.

Athletes' body movements through day after day training, then the formation of physical memory, thus you can perform some kind of spontaneous kinesthetic state. Sports experience is not just a process, but life stories of athletes with sweat, tears and brainstorming relegated to. The researchers read the theme of cross-strait research for Javelin are committed to technology, training, and teaching Direction of mechanics, players rarely addressed the inner world of body experience and discussion. In this study, personal experience of javelin throwing as the theme, the study aims to investigate the application of sport experience and physical experience adjustment and control, and thus enhance athletic skills and stability, the unity of body and soul to achieve a better state. The point of view from this research goes through self-narrative which was described by first-person storytelling. The results shows that inner world of javelin thrower has a special meaning that is the stage of self-expression, a springboard for further studies, a relationship, a sense of fun and wild instincts from javelin throw. "Real experience," the importance of a javelin thrower for improved resilience, reflection and correction experience pain, self-styled shape, and self-fulfilling confidence. "Body experience" of javelin thrower for the body to enhance the value of the perceived sensitivity and resilience, the ability to enhance the feeling of comprehensive analysis, improve memory and physical force to develop the correct order to enhance the establishment of a comprehensive physical fitness and special fitness. This results suggest that while javelin coaches and players apply positive reinforcement training methods, they should pay attention to the application of players’ real experience and body experience to assist javelin thrower into "world of beauty" to create a "new javelin world." Objective: The aim of the study was to compare the differences in kinematic parameters of whole body and discuss the relationship of maximum angular displacement between partner throw and elastic straps training. Method: Twelve elite college level judo players were recruited for the study. Three trials for these two trainings were captured with MotionAnalysis system (8 Eagle cameras were used) at 100Hz. Data processing was used by the function “Data Process” built-in EVaRT 4.65 program, including completing the trajectories of markers, using Butterworth Filter(cutoff-frequency: 8Hz) and finally outputting the raw data into Matlab program for calculating the kinematic parameters(maximum displacement, max angular displacement, peak velocity and peak angular velocity). Statistics: The differences of kinematic parameters between these two training types during different phases (kuzushi, tzukuri and kake stage) were tested for statistical significance by paired-samples t-test, and the relationship of maximum angular displacement between these two training types during different phases were tested by Pearson product moment correlation by SPSS 12.0 program, significant level=.05. Result: The end of kake stage in partner throw was decided by the instant of uke falling on the ground; therefore the duration of this stage in partner throw training was longer than that in elastic straps training. The kinematic parameters in kuzushi and tzukuri phase between these two trainings were more similar, but there were more kinematic differences (p<.05) in kake stage between two kinds of training. The correlation analysis of max angular displacement revealed significant positive relationship (p<.05) in right knee joint angle during kuzushi phase, in lower limbs joint angle and trunk flexion/extension during tzukuri phase. Conculsion: During kake phase, the statistical differences of kinematic characteristics may be due to the direction of external force in these two trainings. Suggestion: In elastic straps training, three movements should be noticed: 1) the radial flexion of right hand in kuzushi stage. 2) clipping arm in tzukuri stage. 3) lifting hip in kake stage.
