Abstract:

Abstract:
Humanity has entered a new geologic age wherein our actions have become the dominant influence steering both climate and environment, now having entered a new era of mass extinction. Some scientist allege that half of the extant animal species have disappeared in the last forty years, while other scientific studies project that the remaining nine million species will again halve by the end of the century. Although extinction cycles are no stranger to this planet, this sixth iteration is unique in that is being driven primarily by human consumption. It has been claimed that in order to sustain our current level of consumption, we would need a planet 1.5-2 times the size of the one we currently inhabit. It is easy to dismiss our individual responsibility as stewards of this planet. New modes of thinking about and approaching conservation at a local level must be developed in order to stave off the impending destruction of any and all species. Our own future as a species is inexorably linked to the success of the ecosystems we inhabit; their success, too, is bound to the species that sustain them. While this essay may not offer any meaningful solutions to an impending cataclysm, it is my hope that it will at the very least elicit a desire to amend the way we think about animals, nature, and the urgent responsibility we need to take for our planet in order for both our species and the Earth’s other inhabitants to endure.

Abstract:
This collection of nine fiction stories explores the journeys of men and women who find themselves unable to continue on the path they've set for themselves. So often, the roads we follow are dictated by social conditioning. This collection considers how are paths are predetermined by social norms and follows the characters as they react to unexpected obstacles encountered in common scenarios. Will they forge new paths? Turn back? Or will they take a detour and return to their original road?

Full text
Abstract:
During the bending of flange plate used for dapped girders some highway bridge fabricators are experiencing cracking of the flange plate particularly when heat is used in assisting the bending process. Due to the extreme strains experienced during the fabrication process, investigating this problem requires the use of a finite element analysis. The fabrication process was broken down into two parts, first the heating of the plate through the use of either a furnace or an acetylene torch (thermal), and the second was the bending process (structural). The five different temperatures collected during the thermal analysis were a uniform temperature of 75oF, a 1100oF uniform temperature as a result of furnace heating, both five and ten minutes of air-cooling after the plate had reached a uniform temperature of 1100oF, and the temperature gradient after heating the flange plate to a surface temperature of 1200oF though the use of an acetylene torch. After the thermal analysis was completed, the resulting temperatures were imported into the structural model. The plate thicknesses analyzed were one, one and a half, and two inches, assuming both 50 and 70 ksi yield strengths. To achieve a 90 degree six-inch radius bend the plate was bent in five separate locations. The result of this analysis showed that with the introduction of temperature gradients into thefabrication process, the strains along the plate??s extreme fibers increased. The model further showed that for both a one and a half and two-inch thick plate the extreme fiber strains exceeded ten percent, which further adds to the increased risk of the flange plate cracking during fabrication. The highest residual stresses through the plate??s thickness occurred during cold bending. The residual stresses through the plate??s thickness decreased when the fabrication process was carried out at elevated temperatures. When steel exceeds a strain of 10 to 16 percent during the fabrication process, the plate becomes susceptible to cracking. This strain limit was exceeded for plate thicknesses of one and a half and two inches.

Abstract:
To achieve true sustainability, planners must balance the interests of environmental protection, economic development, and social equity. In a critically changing, complex ecosystem such as Louisiana’s coast, challenges to achieve the perfect equilibrium are further compounded. Following the logic of emerging adaptive co-management literature, the planning framework for Louisiana’s Coastal Master Plan could be transformed into a more collaborative, democratic process. Adaptive co-management is a regime which provides power to local citizens, often in possession of invaluable traditional ecological knowledge. In general, it focuses on constant learning and collaboration. Through power-sharing and participatory action, we embrace science, but step back from technocracy. We utilize local knowledge, and combine it with expertise.

Abstract:
Nowadays, the Brazilian adjuvant market is approximately 400 million dollars. The most part are oils, that demonstrating low knowledge about organosilicone adjuvants. It was made an extensive literature revision in the Internet, Associations, Private companies, as well specialist opinion. Conclusions were that due to favorable toxicological and environmental characteristics, organosilicone adjuvant can be used with herbicides, fungicides, insecticides, growth regulators, foliar fertilizers and biopesticides. The benefits are improved efficacy of products. The improvement can result from enhanced penetration, uptake, retention or covering of active ingredients. Organosilicones are unique adjuvants in that they can produce stomatal flooding. There are different adjuvant organosilicone. To obtain better results is important taking in consideration: (i) environment conditions, (ii) vegetal species, (iii) application system, (iv) crop management, (iv) active ingredient and (v) target. The creation of simple and clear /regulatory rules for adjuvants in Brazil is needed, using the existent normatization in the USA as reference. According discussions in the Workshop about Adjuvants in the Agriculture in Brazil, promoted by Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, the adjuvant must be treated as a chemical product, which will be combined with the existed agrochemicals products in the market. In relation of Research demands, suggesting study the different organosilicone products in relation the properties. As well the possibilities of new personalized combinations that supplying better performance in relation retention improvement and spreading to better surface covering. Suggesting to review all the existed intellectual properties, as well not compiled materials including new products and from past for creating of database. One of big uses of organosilicone had with glyphosate, for reducing wash off losses and efficacy improvement. However, it was carried a trial under controlled conditions in greenhouse, in the University of São Paulo, with objective of evaluate the application of organosilicone surfactant with glyphosate under conditions of simulated rain. The Brachiaria decumbens specie was cultivated in pots. Applications were made when the plants were one tiller of about 30 cm, 30 days after seeding. The experiments were carried out in randomized design, using a factorial scheme, five doses of glyphosate (0, 135, 270, 540 and 1080 g.ha-1 of a.i.), and three doses of silicone adjuvant Break Thru® (0, 50 and 100 mL.ha-1) with three replications for each treatment. Two experiments have been conducted without and with simulated rainfall of 10 mm, 30 minutes after application of the treatments. Seven and 21 days after treatment application the percentage of weed control, Spad index, lipid peroxidation and dry matter were evaluated. This effect was more dramatic in dose of 135 g.ha-1, as well as decreased Spad value, dry matter and lipid peroxidation increase, when associated with a dose of 100 mL.ha-1 surfactant.

Abstract:

Although the British and the Americans use the same language, i.e. English, the differences in vocabulary, pronunciation, and spelling between these two varieties doubtlessly exist. However, this paper deals particularly with the spelling differences between British English and American English since spelling seems to cause confusion and problems to the learners of English the most. The American spelling is considered to be informal; therefore, the essay focuses on the standard British English spelling of words through, night, light, and high and their equivalents in American English, i.e. thru, nite, lite, and hi. This study investigates how extensively the British and the Americans use the standard and the informal spelling of these words in different written sources such as newspapers, magazines, leaflets and advertisements, and books. In addition, the collocations of these particular words are investigated. In order to do this quantitative research, the Collins Cobuild corpus material was searched and analyzed. The results of this study reveal that the informal American spelling of these four words appears in British texts more often than in American texts. However, the informal spelling tends to appear in non-American sources when speaking about America or American cultural phenomena.

Abstract:
More than one-third of the U.S. citizens (over 70 million people) and 16% of children are classified as obese and are at risk of many diseases including heart disease. Research indicates that 65% of Americans over the age of twenty years old are considered overweight. To address this public health issue, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration has proposed new nutritional guidelines for restaurant menus. Thus, the current study investigated the preferences of quick service restaurant (QSR) industry consumers with reference to the newly proposed U.S. Food and Drug Administration regulations. This study includes development and redesigning of drive thru menus to comply with the FDA guidelines. A 3x2 factorial design experiment was conducted using real drive thru menus from three major national restaurant chains. The control group consisted of normal drive thru menus obtained from national restaurant chains, and the experimental group was comprised of two sets of pre-tested experimental menus complying with the FDA guidelines. The first set of experimental menus includes presentation of calorie information for all menu items offered. The second set of experimental menus includes color coded calorie specific menu categories (low, regular and high). A set of research hypotheses were developed and data was collected from heavy users of QSR units using Qualtrics software. The collected data were analyzed using SPSS. The obtained results indicated that the QSR menus designed to comply with the FDA's guidelines do not result in loss of revenues as commonly feared by the restaurant industry. But interestingly the second set of experiment menus with color coded nutritional categories (low, regular, high) have led to increased consumer patronage and consumers' willingness to pay. In addition, color coded nutritional menus were preferred over FDA suggested menus designs. The results from the current study are of significant importance to the QSR industry as they strive to comply with the new nutrition guidelines of FDA for drive thru menus.

Abstract:

Several species of Psychotria L. are common in the understore of semideciduous forests of the Center-West region of Brazil. Often these species occur in sympatry and present overlap in their flowering periods. Recent studies have revealed the occurrence of pollinators sharing among synchronopatric species within the genus Psychotria, with a variation in this sharing according to the interacting species. In the present study, it was investigated whether the exchange of heterospecific pollen occurs between sympatric species and what the intensity of this flow is in comparison with the intraspecific flow. The floral synchrony and nectar production among these sympatric species of Psychotria were also verified to confirm the possibility of interspecific pollen exchange in this system. The data collection took place during the months of November and December of 2015, in a semidecidual forest in the Municipal Park Setor Santa Cruz, municipality of Catalão, GO. The collected data were: floral phenology, nectar production, reciprocity between anthers and stigma, and rate of fluorescent powder flow between species and their floral morphotypes. Our data showed that the flowering peaks were synchronous among Psychotria species, with a significant difference in the nectar production between the species, being larger and renewable after the first removal for P. nitidula, but with higher sugar concentration in P. prunifolia. In relation to reciprocity intraspecific and interspecific, there was no deviation from that expected for distal species, with the reciprocity being greater between the reproductive organs of the same species than between the reproductive organs of different species. Comparing the fluorescent powder flow, it was observed that P. prunifolia presented a higher rate of exclusive visits, while P. nitidula presented more illegitimate visits, mainly for its thrum morph, which promoted greater donation of heterospecific fluorescent powder. P. hoffmannseggiana presented low intensity of donation and reception of fluorescent powder, being all of them interspecific. Therefore, there was a greater illegitimate fluorescent powder flow among the study species than legitimate.

Abstract:

The object of this study were the Investment Funds Indexed to the Dollar available to the general investor in the Brazilian market, from July/2000 to June/2001. In order to analyse their behaviour, the study discussed the theoretical background of the return rate curve for dollar related assets in Brazil and how it impacts their negotiations, by producing two different terms - the -clean- rate and the -dirty- rate. The main goal of the research was to find out if the funds could be separated into different clusters. In order to achieve this, two different aspects of the funds were studied - marketing and financial. Their marketing characteristics dealt with fees, minimum investment requirements, relevant day for the NAVPS and NAVPS availability. The financial characteristics were approached by their return and risk, benchmark and performance index analysis - thru the Sharpe Index and the Differential Return over the Sigma. The return and risk obtained for the funds were also compared to the return and risk observed in the domestic curve of the Brazilian risk up to 720 days.

Abstract:

The act of thru-hiking a long-distance trail immerses hikers in the natural world for an extended time; as such, it represents a compelling system to study the relationships between a specific appreciative activity—thru-hiking—and environmental attitudes regarding sustainability. This thesis critically explored the primary research question: How do thru-hikes change or inspire environmental attitudes in thru-hikers on long-distance trails in the United States? I employed the revised NEP scale to survey 98 thru-hikers using snowball sampling and I interviewed a subset to gain more in-depth knowledge. In addition, I textually analyzed the blogs written by thru-hikers. Findings suggest that environmental attitudes of thru-hikers already leaned in an ecocentric direction before thru-hiking and after thru-hiking, their environmental attitudes became more so. Furthermore, this thesis finds that women had more ecocentric views than men before and after thru-hiking and that more ecocentric attitude change occurred for thru-hikers in their twenties than other age groups. Thru-hikers also chose to express their environmental views through conversations and their actions. And thus, thru-hikes on long-distance trails in the United States have the potential to strengthen and/or reinforce existing ecocentric attitudes in thru-hikers.

In RF power transistor characterisation, the designer is confronted with low impedance measurements (typically from 1 Ohm to 12 Ohm). These transistors are contained in metal-ceramic packages of which the lead widths vary with power capability. This thesis presents a high-quality fixture design with low impedance TRL calibration standards for characterisation of an LDMOS transistor. Pre-matching networks are used to transform to the low impedance environment. Since these pre-matching networks are independent of the termination impedance, the low impedance port can always be designed to comply with the same dimension as the device which is being measured.

Abstract:
The Indiana State Library and Historical Building, constructed in 1934, is an outstanding example of stripped classicism and Art Deco. The ornament on both the exterior and interior of the limestone structure portray the regional story of the development of Indiana. The monumental building is the most well‐known work by Indianapolis architectural firm Pierre and Wright. Little has been written on the Indiana State Library and Historical Building and a comprehensive architectural history has never before been compiled on this remarkable building. The subject of research pertains to the original building only. Investigation examines the architectural competition for the design, the construction process, the numerous carvings, large stained glass windows, and four murals, and the symbolism in the ornament of the Indiana State Library and Historical Building. Through research at the Indiana State Library and the Indiana State Archives and using both primary and secondary resources, the motivation for much of the ornament was discovered. Additionally, long forgotten details and symbolism were recovered. This research provides insight into the narrative as told by the architecture and ornament of the building. It may assist in the research on the 1976 addition and the 2002 renovation that has yet to be completed. Furthermore, it will likely aid in future renovations and restorations of the building.

In this thesis, we will describe the design and implementation of the parallel file subsystem on C-thru, a Distributed Shared Memory (DSM) system developed in our laboratory. The main goal of parallel file subsystem on DSM is to reduce network traffic in page-based software DSM systems, thereby improving system performance. Our laboratory has built a prototype of the parallel file subsystem on two DSM systems, namely Cohesion and TreadMarks. But these two prototypes have several limitations: users must read/write the whole parallel file in a single access; users cannot modify a existing parallel file; the parallel file request must be issued from the root node. In this research, we still use the two main features of them, i.e., the variable data distribution scheme and the delayed file access mechanism. But in our parallel file subsystem on C-thru, we eliminate the limitations revealing in the two previous parallel file subsystems. In addition, we have developed several new mechanisms to lessen the performance degradation caused by the frequent small accesses. The asynchronous file offset mechanism is used to reduce the amount of the synchro-offset messages, and the purpose of the software cache mechanism is to reduce the rotation latency and seek time of the harddisks. The "Pre-Get Clean Page Owners at Once" mechanism is to reduce the large amount page fault messages while reading large amount data in the DSM systems. This implementation requires little modifications in the underlying DSM systems and the existing parallel applications. Our working platform is a network of 4 dual-Pentium 100 PCs that are connected by a 10Mbps Ethernet. We use four applications, which are SOR, MM, Ray-Tracing, and VQ, to test our new parallel file system in several difference cases.

The multimode TRL calibration methods is known as an approach for the measurement of multi-conductor transmission line devices. The propagation constants of different modes propagating along the multi-conductor transmission line must be different when using this method. However, in general multi-port networks, the propagating constants at each port may be equal. The thru-reflection-unequal-line (TRuL) calibration method with asymmetric R calibrator for the calibration of the equal propagation constant case is proposed. Lines of unequal length are used to make the eigenvalues unequal during calibration process. This will greatly simplify the calculation. Asymmetric “R” calibrator is proposed to simplify the sign ambiguity resolution process. The measured scattering matrices of a branch line coupler on FR4 and Rogers RO4003C substrate using proposed “TRuL” calibration method shows good agreement with EM simulation.

"Low Cost System for Test of Thru-Plane Thermal Transfer Coefficient." Master's thesis, 2016. http://hdl.handle.net/2286/R.I.40265.

Full text
Abstract:
abstract: Determining the thermal conductivity of carbon gas diffusion layers used in hydrogen fuel cells is a very active topic of research. The primary driver behind this research is due to the need for development of proton exchange membrane fuels with longer usable life cycles before failure. As heat is a byproduct of the oxygen-hydrogen reaction an optimized pathway to remove the excess heat is needed to prevent thermal damage to the fuel cell as both mechanical and chemical degradation is accelerated under elevated temperatures. Commercial systems used for testing thermal conductivity are readily available, but are prohibitively expensive, ranging from just over $10,000 to $80,000 for high-end systems. As this cost can exclude some research labs from experimenting with thermal conductivity, a low cost alternative system is a desirable product. The development of a low cost system that maintained typical accuracy levels of commercials systems was carried out successfully at a significant cost reduction. The end product was capable of obtaining comparable accuracy to commercial systems at a cost reduction of more than 600% when compared to entry level commercial models. Combined with a system design that only required some basic fabrication equipment, this design will allow many research labs to expand their testing capabilities without straining departmental budgets. As expected with the development of low cost solutions, the reduction in cost came at the loss in other aspects of system performance, mainly run time. While the developed system requires a significate time investment to obtain useable results, the system can be improved by the used of RTDs in place of thermocouples or incorporation of an isothermal cold plate. These improvements would reduce the runtime to less than that of a standard work day while maintaining an approximate reduction in cost of 350%.

In this thesis, two kinds of circuits were investigated and fabricated in a standard WIN 0.15μm pHEMT process. In the first part, a two-stage power amplifier using a differential configuration is implemented to meet the power and linearity requirement of IEEE 802.16 WiMAX standard. The operating frequency is ranging from 3.4 GHz to 3.7 GHz. The chip size is 1.5mm × 1mm. The maximum output power achieved in this work is 18dBm, the power gain 14dB, the maximum power added efficiency 16% and the output third-order intercept point 28dBm. The topology used is workable but not off-chip matching ready due to some assembly issues. It could be improved further more. In the second part, a single pole to six thru antenna switch is designed and it can direct the path of the signal propagation between two TXs, four RXs and the antenna. The chip size is 1mm×2mm. The insertion loss of the SP6T switch is around 1 dB. Besides, one of important feature about this design is the isolation between TX and RX being improved by an insertion of serial transistors and shunted terminations. It is quite suitable for the application of a quad-band GSM handset.

Abstract:
Rooted in a critical dialogue that endeavours to theorize experience in contrast to the colonial impetus, this dissertation explores the lived experience of Appalachian Trail thru-hikers. As a result of this disposition, the purpose of this dissertation is to expose the dynamics associated with colonized experiences and empirically research the lived experience of thru-hikers from an ecophenomenological perspective. The subsequent approach views the activities of the lived human body as the process through which the world comes into being. Building on Merleau-Pontian phenomenology, ecophenomenology provides the foundation of the experiential self, and thus underlies the representation of the trail environment as a sensuous field of human activity where one is merged with one's socio-ecological surroundings. Explication of empirical materials from 27 participant interviews resulted in a wide range of thru-hiking experiences representing the operative essence of Appalachian Trail thru-hiking. The operative essence was identified across 4 broad dimensions: Perseity, Sojourning, Kinship, and Wild Imbrication. Each dimension comprised a dialectic which emerged from interview excerpts both congruent with and in contrast to wilderness ideology. Further exploration of wilderness ideals resulted in thru-hikers negotiating tensions related to ideological wilderness meanings and their own actual thru-hiking experiences. This negotiation allowed a broader conception of wilderness to be illustrated as a continuum of meaningful experiences. In addition, ecoliteracy emerged as an experientially driven learning process whereby thru-hikers negotiate alternative meanings of wilderness with ideological meanings. The implications for experiential and wilderness related research along with management concerns are discussed.
