PURPOSE: The aim of this investigation was to quantitatively evaluate C-cells in colloid goiters, analyzing 36 thyroids that were obtained through thyroidectomy from 24 patients with goiter and 12 normal glands from adult patients without thyroid disease, which were used as the control group. MATERIAL AND METHODS: On average, 6 different thyroid areas were sampled and labeled by immunohistochemistry with a monoclonal anticalcitonin antibody, utilizing the avidin-biotin-peroxidase complex. C-cells were counted in fields measuring 1 square centimeter, and the mean number of cells per field was t

Deregulation of VEGFA (Vascular Endothelial Growth Factor A) and NFE2L2 (Nuclear Factor (Erythroid-derived 2)-Like 2), involved in angiogenesis and oxidative stress, can lead to thyroid cancer progression. MiR-17-5p and miR-612 are possible regulators of these genes and may promote thyroid disorders. In order to evaluate the involvement of VEGFA, NFE2L2, hsa-miR-17-5p, and hsa-miR-612 in thyroid pathology, we examined tissue samples from colloid goiter, papillary thyroid cancer (PTC), and a normal thyroid. We found higher levels of VEGFA and NFE2L2 transcripts and the VEGFA protein in goiter a

Benign nodular goitre is one of the most common endocrine disorder, especially in countries like Nepal where iodine deficiency is endemic. Case History: A 59 years old female presented with large thyroid swelling. Investigations showed it to be colloid goiter compressing the airway. Left hemithyroidectomy was done. Post operative period was uneventful.Discussion: Management of thyroid nodules depends upon assessment of thyroid function, fine needle aspiration cytology and imaging. Surgery is the common method of treatment.

OBJECTIVES. Diffuse and nodular goiter are the most common thyroid gland (thyroid) diseases in children and adults living in iodine-deficient regions. Thyroid hormone potentiates progressive hypertrophy and hyperplasia of thyrocytes, with uneven proliferation of thyroid cells leading to nodule formation. Iodine deficiency, which promotes replication of thyroid follicular cells, also increases the incidence of TSH Receptor mutations, leading to receptor activation and autonomous functioning of follicles.AIM. In spite of a considerable efficacy of conservative treatment of goiter, surgery remains the main method of treatment of such patients. Though, on the one hand, total thyroidectomy inevitably results in the development of postsurgical hypothyroidism, on the other hand – in case organ-saving surgery is performed the risk of postsurgical relapse arises. Modern morphological methods are directed to detection of oncological risk of nodular formations, and recommendations concerning an adequate volume of surgery taking into account probability of relapse are practically lacking. Abstract Tuberculosis (TB) of the thyroid gland is extremely rare, even in areas where the prevalence of TB is very high. Only a few such cases have been reported in the literature. The clinical course may resemble toxic goiter or acute thyroiditis. We report the case of a 23-year-old male who presented with painless swelling of the thyroid gland associated with mild fever and weight loss. On ultrasound neck, a large echogenic solid lesion was seen. Fine-needle aspiration cytology was suggestive of colloid goiter, but histopathology study suggested TB of the thyroid gland along with colloid go

Clinically, a diffuse, firm goiter with pyramidal lobe enlargement, and without signs of thyrotoxicosis, should suggest the diagnosis of Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT). The association of goiter with hypothyroidism is almost diagnostic. The thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) is the sensitive marker of hypothyroidism and diagnosis of subclinical hypothyroidism. Thyroid perioxidase antibodies (TPO-Ab) and, less frequently, thyroglobulin antibodies (Tg-Ab) are elevated in the serum of patients with HT.
