Abstract:
Thesis (M.A.)--Boston University<br>Thyroid hormones are iodinated compounds that are critical to differentiation, apoptosis, and cellular processes in virtually every vertebrate cell. The thyroid gland produces mostly thyroxine (T4) and also 3',3,5-triiodothyronine (T3). T4 acts as a "prehormone" and is converted in the periphery into the more physiologically active T3 via deiodination. Deiodination is also the process by which thyroid hormones are inactivated and thyroid hormone balance is maintained. Types 1 (Dl) and 2 (D2) deiodinase activate T4 into T3. Conversely, inactivation is accompl

Endogenous fetal thyroid hormone production does not occur until the beginning of the second trimester. Recently, the computer aided diagnosis system based on ultrasonic technology is well adopted by the hospitals. However, based on ultrasonic image and human experience, the cancer can only be diagnosed in 80 percent, the rest thus have to return to invasive biopsy. What is worse, there are still remaining 20 percent uncertainness after biopsy. In order

This system is divided into three parts. In the first part, 16×16 block image are used to extracted textural features, and then a Relief-F algorithm is used to select representative features for different tissue type. In the part, two supervising neural network classifiers(back-propagation and radial basis function neural networks), are used to realize a single classifier and a hierarchical classifier architectures. The challenge in clinical aspect is how to early detect thyroid cancer from those suspicious subjects. The way of biopsy using Fine-needle aspiration (FNA) of the thyroid gland has proven to be an important and widely accepted, cost-effective, safe, and accurate method for patients with thyroid nodules. Unfortunately, the lack of a standardized reporting format has caused confusion

Many studies in animals and humans have demonstrated that exposure topolychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) can interfere with the normal function of the thyroid system. In this study, Atlantic croaker (Micropogonias undulatus) were exposed to a PCB mixture (Aroclor 1254) or one of three individual congeners (ortho-PCB 153, ortho-PCB 47 or planar PCB 77) in the diet for 30 days to investigate the effects of PCBs on thyroidal status. However, because the TSHR ancestor is the only glycoprotein hormone receptor found in invertebrates, we hypothesized that TSHR evolves much earlier than FSHR and LHR and thus can be expressed in mammalian gonads for certain uncharacterized impacts. To prove this, real-time PCR quantification against Tshr in all male mouse reproductive organs was performed. The results indicated that Tshr is mainly expressed i
