The protests in and around Tibet in 2008 show that Tibet's status within China remains unsettled. The West is not an outsider to the Tibet question, which is defined primarily in terms of the debate over the status of Tibet vis-à-vis China. Tibet's modern geopolitical identity has been scripted by British imperialism. The changing dynamics of British imperial interests in India affected the emergence of Tibet as a (non)modern geopolitical entity. In response to Tibetan social pressures in the 11th century, Atisa initiated a renewal of Buddhist monasticism that resulted in all Buddhist praxis outside of meditation being strictly framed by attitudes and behaviors informed by love and compassion. British historical accounts analysed in chapter one are balanced with Chinese narratives that present the Mission as an invasion of the Motherland and its unity. Biglycan (Bgn) is a small leucine-rich proteoglycan (SLRP) that is enriched in bone and other skeletal connective tissues and is responsible, in part, for the regulation of postnatal skeletal growth (Bianco, 1990). Mice lacking Bgn display reduced skeletal development and a lower peak bone mass that leads to age-dependent osteopenia (Xu, 1998). We hypothesized that mechanical loading could reverse the skeletal phenotype of Bgn knockout mice. To test this hypothesis, we determined the effects of treadmill running on the geometric, mechanical and mineral properties of Bgn deficient mice bones. A
