Abstract:
Tick toxicoses, of which paralysis is the most widespread and dominant form, are important elements of pathogenesis induced by ticks. Tick paralysis is the most widespread and dominant form of tick toxicoses. Non-paralytic forms of tick toxicoses do occur and evidence suggests that these forms of toxicoses are not evolutionary related. While functional significance has been suggested for tick toxins, the advantages for tick survival in general are not clear. This review considers the molecular nature of tick toxins, the possibility that tick toxins have originated more than once independently

The spotted fever rickettsia, Rickettsia helvetica, is an endemic tick-borne bacteria in Sweden. It causes infections in humans, manifested as aneruptive fever, headache, arthralgia and myalgia, and sometimes an inoculation eschar or a rash. There have also been two known cases of human infections with R. felis in Sweden. The present thesis starts by investigating dispersal of ticks and Rickettsia spp. by migrating birds flying from Africa to Europe. Almost 15,000 birds were searched and 734 ticks collected, mainly of the species Hyalomma marginatum complex. Almost half (48%) of the ticks were

Envenomation by the Australian paralysis tick, I. holocyclus, is a considerable veterinary problem affecting tens of thousands of domestic and native animals each year. Envenomation is characterised by a progressive ascending flaccid paralysis and is due to a neurotoxin present in the salivary secretions of the tick. Purification of the neurotoxic component has been largely unsuccessful mainly due to the insensitivity of the b

The hospital neurologist may encounter neuromuscular disorders as known chronic conditions that are exacerbated by a hospital stay, be the principal reason for admission, or develop during a prolonged hospitalization. This chapter details the presentation, diagnosis, and management of conditions affecting the peripheral nerves and neuromuscular junction, such as myasthenia gravis, Lambert-Eaton (myasthenic) syndrome, botulism, and tick paralysis; as well as muscular weakness from various causes such as rhabdomyolysis, critical illness neuromyopathy, inflammatory myopathies, muscular dystrophie

Myasthenia can be caused by acquired or autoimmune conditions and other conditions resulting from genetic abnormalities of the proteins in the neuromuscular junction. The clinical clues to diagnosis in the paediatric population are highlighted in this chapter. Among these are sudden death, episodic apnoea, stridor, association with myopathy, and limb-girdle weakness presentation. Acquired disorders of the neuromuscular junction occur, such as infantile botulism, tick paralysis, and persistence of neuromuscular blocking agents. Some patterns of abnormality are seen in the neurophysiological fin
