Abstract. The main priority of the first of James Cook's famous voyages of discovery was the observation of the transit of Venus at Tahiti. Following that, he was ordered to embark on a search for new lands in the South Pacific Ocean. Cook had instructions to record as many aspects of the environment as possible at each place that he visited, including the character of the tide. This paper makes an assessment of the quality of Cook's tidal observations using modern knowledge of the tide, and with an assumption that no major tidal changes have taken place during the past two and half centuries.

The paper describes the causes of abandonment of agricultural land in various regions of the world, as well as in Russia and the Republic of Crimea, and explores the existing methods and approaches for identifying such lands using data from remote sensing of the Earth. To identify abandoned lands in Crimea, the MODIS time series analysis method of remote sensing data was used together with ground data on the location of arable land using Vega-Science service. The study was aimed to identify the main biological groups of weed growing on set-aside lands of the Volga Delta, which were removed from production in different years. Within the study, species composition of set-aside lands’ vegetation was defined, which amounted to 28 species and 16 families. The plant community of set-aside lands includes such large families as Asteraceae (5 species), Poaceae (4 species), Brassicaceae (3 species). It was observed that quantitative species composition of set-aside lands’ flora has been c

Of all the rights of indigenous people, none is more central to the survival of their culture than the claim to their ancestral lands. The resolution of their claims to ancestral lands is one of the fundamental issues of our time—indeed of all time. Often called a human rights issue—a description apt to reinforce the strong moral foundations of the claims of the indigenous peoples—it is an issue which we cannot ignore. Throughout the world people of all races and all colours have a powerful emotional attachment to their ancestral lands. That attachment is the very core of a people's culture an

These texts share a number of motifs, which I enumerate. I trace continuities and divergences in how these texts conceptualize enemies, lands and borders. I observe their depictions of the structural relationships between Israel’s enemies and their land, Israel’s deity and his land, and Israel and its land. I thus reconstruct the literary practice of territoriality—how

Abstract Recently, large areas of federal lands in the western United States have been subject to wildfire. Concerns about hastening restoration, soil disturbance, and road building have prompted consideration of helicopter logging. Normal planning procedures on federal lands are not sensitive to the rapid decline in the recoverable economic value of fire-killed timber. The economic value of fire-killed timber is dependent on logging costs and time since tree death. A model is developed to calculate value of fire-killed timber as a function of time since death and yarding distance using helico
