Abstract:
Sea level is one of ocean properties that needed to be observed. Sea level observation will give information about osean tides and tides datum. As technology became more reliable, people can develop new instrument easily. Recently, open source microcontroller “Arduino” became popular and lot of people using it to develop what we call “low-cost” instrument. But, there are several disadvantages if we build instrument directly. Simulation phase must be done before manufacture instrument. This phase will help to decrease cost and time. In this paper, we will describe the concept, algorithm, and simulation phase in manufacturing Low Cost Ocean Tides Monitoring Instrument.

Abstract:
Tidal wetland preservation, restoration and creation have become requisites for coastal development projects in the United States. A basic approach to design of tidal wetlands is presented, stressing cooperation between regulatory agencies, biologists, engineers, and developers. Basic principles of wetland functions are explained and presented as criteria for engineering design. A description of wetlands is given to identify biological features relevant to design. Also, some key features of tides are summarized as they affect wetland design. A numerical model was used to demonstrate how tidal wetlands may be designed to conform with criteria developed by the agencies and biologists. This approach has been used on wetland designs in California, but the approach may be applicable to other areas of the world.

Abstract:
The ocean environment necessitates the pile foundation supporting the offshore structures to be designed against cyclic load, moments and torques initiated by a combined action of waves, wind, tides, currents, etc. Such a complex loading condition induces progressive degradation in the pile-soil interactive performance introducing significant reduction in bearing capacity with increased settlement and displacements. The Author has carried out extensive experimental (laboratory model tests) and theoretical investigations (boundary element analysis) to study the salient features of this degradation and developed a design methodology for offshore pile foundation. The works conducted and the major conclusions drawn are highlighted in this paper.

Determination of wind tides and wave action is an essential step in the design of flood-control and navigation projects and of structures near large bodies of water which may be subjected to hurricane winds. In 1948, the Corps of Engineers initiated a program to collect wind-tide and wave data on Lake Okeechobee. Basic data collected and investigations made under that program have been published as a series of project bulletins, "Waves and Wind Tides in Inland Waters, Lake Okeechobee, Florida, and in a summary report, "Civil Works Investigation CW-167, Waves and Wind Tides in Shallow Lakes and Reservoirs." Data on wind velocities, wind tides, and waves have been collected under that program during six hurricanes and many minor storms. In this paper an attempt is made to summarize the results of the wind-tide studies and outline the procedure developed for computing wind tides on Lake Okeechobee.

Abstract:
The tides, which affect the water level of the Musi River causes some problems to occur in Palembang City. One of the main problems related to the tides of the Musi River, especially the low tide, is the failure of the raw water intake building of Regional Drinking Water Company (PDAM) Tirta Musi, Palembang City to operate. At a certain time the river water level recedes, the minimum water level entering the intake pump room is lower than the safe level for the pump to run. In this study, an analysis of the tides of the Musi River was carried out using the Least Square method to evaluate the design of the raw water intake building for the Gandus system to disclose whether it meets the minimum elevation requirements for pump operation. The field observations of the tides were carried out for 15 days for every 1 hour to obtain the primary data for this study using the Hobo Water Meter. The results of this study indicate that the type of the tides in the location of the study is a mixed tidal type with a Formzahl Value of 2.01. 4. Against the design plan of the gandus system of raw water intake, there is a chance that the elevation of the river water level is at 0.5 m from the end of the pump suction pipe, in which the pump cannot function.

Abstract:
In view of the drawbacks of the traditional optimal methods in the suspension structure optimization, this paper elaborates a genetic algorithm (GA) based global optimal design so as to improve the vehicle performance. Firstly, an independent double wishbone air suspension (IDWAS) is constructed. After defining the linkage relation of the guide mechanism of the IDWAS, the model is verified followed with the parametric design. Furthermore, in consideration of the prescribed targets of the vehicle kinematics, the wheel alignment parameters (WAPs) are selected as the objectives of the optimal design of the vehicle kinematics. Apart from the kinematic analysis of the IDWAS, dynamic analysis before and after optimization as well as the traditional independent double wishbone suspension (TIDWS) are also conducted. Numerical results show that the changes of the WAPs are within a certain range and the guide mechanism follows the prescribed constraints. Simulation results show that the IDWAS is superior to the TIDWS, while the optimized IDWAS has a slight improvement as compared to the original IDWAS in dynamic performance of the suspension.

Abstract:
Ocean energy is a precious pearl. However, in the exploitation of the sea of people, the available development of ocean wave energy method is too simple and the structure of the device is relatively complex. This paper examines the analysis for the direction of the waves along the coast, and designed a dual-channel ocean wave energy generation device as well as having made a detailed description of its structure and concrete working principle. The ingenious engineering design of the device can continuously generate electricity. As the waves of high and low tides will produce mechanical energy to drive the rotation of the impeller, the improved design in this paper make full use of this principle so that can produce a steady stream of electricity. Due to the inherent advantages of this device, it has great room for improvement and broad application prospects.

Renewable energy sources are considered a part of the future of energy production in Malaysia. The main objectives of this research are to append a new energy extraction technique that harvests energy from tides and to develop a preliminary design for a tidal energy plant at Kuching Barrage. Knowing the diameter of the turbine, the dimensions of the powerhouse are achieved in conjunction with site conditions. The centerline should be at least below the low water tide so that the tide is at all times guaranteed to be submerged. Based on this, the powerhouse has a 24.61m length, is about 100m in distance across, and its elevation is 36.39m. The construction is located downstream and the centerline habitation at -1.15 and below LSD. The calculated tidal energy plant is comprised of four bulb-type turbines installed at each barrage gate. The bulb-type turbine blades would face the sea site with 11.32m length of the draft tube. This study detailed feasibility study can be implemented.

Abstract. Tide predictions based on tide-gauge observations are not just the astronomical tides; they also contain radiational tides – periodic sea-level changes due to atmospheric conditions and solar forcing. This poses a problem of double-counting for operational forecasts of total water level during storm surges. In some surge forecasting, a regional model is run in two modes: tide only, with astronomic forcing alone; and tide and surge, forced additionally by surface winds and pressure. The surge residual is defined to be the difference between these configurations and is added to the local harmonic predictions from gauges. Here we use the Global Tide and Surge Model (GTSM) based on Delft-FM to investigate this in the UK and elsewhere, quantifying the weather-related tides that may be double-counted in operational forecasts. We show that the global S2 atmospheric tide is captured by the tide-and-surge model and observe changes in other major constituents, including M2. The Lowest and Highest Astronomical Tide levels, used in navigation datums and design heights, are derived from tide predictions based on observations. We use our findings on radiational tides to quantify the extent to which these levels may contain weather-related components.

Hur designers kan skapa hållbara produkter som konsumenten vill behålla en längre tid. På så sätt förlängs produktens livslängd och bidrar till en hållbarare konsumtion. Teorier som användes i studienvar produktanknytning, produktlivslängd, produktutbyte, tidlös design, estetik, form och material med ett övergripande fokus på hållbar design. Genom teorierna, möbelanalyser, intervjuer, skiss och prototypande har exempel för att designa för en lång livslängd tagits fram. Resultatet av studien blev en färgglad bordslampa med de typiska karaktäristiska dragen av en lampa och samtidigt en unik och skulptural design.<br>The purpose of the study has been to find out what it is that makes certain furniture and furnishings remain with us for a long time. How designers can create sustainable products that the consumer wants to keep for a longer period of time. In this way, the product lifetime is extended and contributes to more sustainable consumption. Theories used in the study have been product attachment, product longevity, product replacement, timeless design, aesthetics, form and materials with an overall focus on sustainable design. Through the theories and furniture analyzes, interviews, sketches and prototyping, examples for designing for an extended product life have been found. The result of the study was a colorfull table lamp with the typical characteristic features of a lamp and at the same time with a unique and sculptural design.

Syftet med studien är att ta reda på om det finns förutsättningar att skapa ett idrottsrelaterat plagg som kan få liknande genomslagskraft som en välkänd tidlös symbol inom modevärlden, "den lilla svarta" (Coco Chanel). Begrepp som tidlöshet och genomslag är svårdefinierade visar genomgången litteratur. En ansats är att tillämpa filosofiska begrepp för att kartlägga modefenomenet. Förutom de filosofiska begreppen, litteraturstudier och erfarenheter från "den lilla svarta" innehåller studien utarbetade frågor till tre personer med stor branschvana. I analysen förs ett resonemang som visar att det utefter dessa förutsättningar är möjligt att skapa plagget.<br>The purpose of the study is to find out if there are prerequisites for creating a sports-related garment that can have a similar impact to a well-known timeless symbol in the fashion world, "the little black dress" (Coco Chanel). Concepts such as timelessness and impact are difficult to define, the review shows literature. One approach is to apply philosophical concepts to map the fashion phenomenon. In addition to the philosophical concepts, literature studies and experiences from "the little black", the study includes elaborate questions for three people with great industry experience. The analysis provides a reasoning that shows that it is possible to create the garment according to these conditions.

Arbetets syfte är att undersöka berättelseformer i datorspel baserade på tillämpningen av sceneri, avgränsat till spelarens uppfattning av tid och plats. Utifrån de svårigheter som förknippas med framställningen av naturligt förfall och framställningen av teknologiska möjligheter har två hypoteser formulerats; då att spelaren främst skapar sig en uppfattning om spelets tidsperiod utifrån upplevt artificiella objekt, samt att spelaren främst skapar sig en uppfattning om spelets verklighetsförankring utifrån spelets miljö. För undersökningens syfte har en virtuell miljö framställts i tre olika versioner, de två första avsedda att testa arbetets hypoteser avskilt, den senare avsedd att testa båda i samma miljö. Undersökningen har skett genom testspelning av dessa av totalt 30 testdeltagare. Undersökningens resultat styrker arbetets hypoteser, då den första i högre grad än den andra, men påvisar även svårigheter förknippade med sammanförandet av de metoder som tillämpats.

In an era where the customer has the power, creating not only usable but also satisfiable systems and applications is of importance. However, research shows that software development practices do not always allow user experience design to take place and gives little guidance regarding how to conduct and integrate UX work. Despite UX’ increased popularity, gained recognition and prior research efforts, organizations and companies still encounter challenges when trying to embrace this change to offer customers more than just a system that ‘works’. Much recognition has gone to the UX field of late, however organizations that lack knowledge, strategies or personnel can often feel powerless. Therefore, we set out to explore what an in-house IT-department without UX practitioners perceived as challenges when integrating UX work and practices. We conducted interviews with developers and project managers within an IT-department to get their opinions. In our study, we identified factors that seem to play a part when integrating UX – such as communication, UX maturity, prioritization and attitudes. Based on these findings, we visualized these factors in what we call a maturity map.

Abstract:
In order for construction projects to be completed within the specified time limit while at the same time be financially sustainable it requires thorough preparation and an extensive planning. Most essential is the groundwork and the design that determines the project's progress. There are many aspects to consider in order to avoid inconveniences such as delay, litigation, unexpected cost etcetera. If mistakes are made in an early stage it is very likely that the error will follow the process and become an expensive correction cost towards the later part of the project. In other words, it is expensive to rectify defects later on. Many times more expensive than if the deficiencies can be found before the construction phase begins. It is up to the client to define what they want to have built. When the idea for a project has been brought to the client he/she must describe and explain the construction in detail. It is from these documents that contractors will base their tender in the hope of performing the contract. This basis is called for enquiry documents and includes specifications, blueprints and descriptions of the project. Inadequate enquiry documents may lead to major consequences. Consequences that often is easy to avoid through a detailed and thorough groundwork. That is unfortunately not the case in the construction industry today. This bachelor thesis is intended to analyse and identify the development of enquiry documents and investigate the common shortcomings. The work has been carried out for eleven weeks in collaboration with Skanska Sweden and creates an awareness and understanding of the enquiry documents value to the reader in the industry. The study also deals with procurement process, which is the stage where the enquiry documents plays its part. Common deficiencies in the enquiry documents will be presented as a conclusion combined with the flaws impact on project time and project cost. Finally, there are also suggestions on how common deficiencies can be avoided.

Abstract:
Upphandling är en central del för att styra statliga resurser och hur de allokeras. Syftet är att förklara avtalsprecision av komplexa byggentreprenader. För att uppnå syftet kommer vi att studera byggprojekt där upphandlingar är utvecklade. Studie 1 besvarar en teoretisk hypotes om att stora projekt skapar fler ÄTA-arbeten. Hypotesen testas med registerdata från en offentlig myndighets interna projektdatabas. Studie 2 söker förklaringar till varför stora projekt driver ÄTA-arbeten. Förklaringar kommer från intervjuer med projektledare och entreprenörer. Studie 3 testas sex olika förklaringar vi benämner post-hoc hypoteser (PHH) som bygger på etablerade begrepp. Testet bygger på enkätdata för beställare och entreprenörer. Den interna projektdatabasen innehöll 486 infrastrukturprojekt (Studie 1). Baserad på projektdatabasen valdes fyra projekt ut för vidare analys. Totalt intervjuades fyra beställare och två entreprenörer kopplat till de utvalda projekten (Studie 2). Totalt deltog 208 respondenter i enkäten varav 87 beställare, 116 entreprenörer och 5 underentreprenörer som kompletterades av två externa entreprenörer (Studie 3).  Resultatet från Studie 1 ger indikation på att dokumentationen, uppföljningen och redovisningen är bristfällig. Detta bekräftades av intervjuerna i Studie 2. I Studie 3 fann vi att projekteringen är bristfällig i stora projekt där parterna agerar missvisande. Resultatet visar på att ÄTA-arbeten drivs av ofullständig projektering, person och ledarskap och av en medveten affärsmodell. Genom bättre dokumentation, uppföljning och redovisning skapas bättre avtalsprecision i upphandlingar och bidrar till meningsfulla processer och en träffsäkrare resursallokering.<br>Procurement is a key part of controlling government resources and how they are allocated. The purpose of this thesis is to explain the contractual precision of complex construction contracts. In order to achieve our objective, we will study construction projects where the procurement is well developed. We pursue this objective based on three studies. Study 1 answers a theoretical hypothesis that large projects create more cost overruns/error. The hypothesis is tested on a project database which is an internal register data from a public bureau. Study 2 seeks explanations as to why large projects drive cost overruns. Explanations come from interviews with project managers and contractors. Study 3 tests six different explanations we refer to post-hoc hypotheses (PHH) based on established concepts. The test is based on survey data for clients and contractors. The project database contained 486 infrastructure projects (Study 1). Based on the project database, four projects were selected for further analysis. A total of four clients and two contractors were interviewed in connection with the selected projects (Study 2). A total of 208 respondents participated in the survey, of which 87 clients, 116 contractors and 5 subcontractors were supplemented by two external contractors (Study 3). The result from study 1 indicates that the documentation, follow-up and reporting are inadequate and confirmed much of the findings in Study 2. In Study 3 we found that the planning is inadequate in large projects and often misleading. The result shows that cost overruns/error is driven by person and leadership, incomplete planning and a conscious business model. Through better documentation, follow-up and accounting, better contractual precision is created in procurement and contributes to meaningful processes and more accurate resource allocation.

After martial law era was ended in 1987, Taiwanese society entered a blooming era of diverse thinkings. Back then, design theories and visual communications flourished and prospered. Gradually, after thirty years, the late post-martial law era arrived. Prior to this time, the development of the once thriving Taiwanese culture design stopped at a point but then proceeded and later prospered again. Was this because the niche of practical culture design not clear and clarified? Since literature developed the awareness of the late post-martial law era, it has been a trend for art practice to echo the prosperous late post-martial law perspectives in recent years. Literature leads the way for art and then for design. However, the advancement in design field still stalls. The demonstration of Taiwanese culture has gained its foothold in literature and art, yet the practice of Taiwanese culture seems to need to advance more in design. To help understand the cultural practice of the late post-martial law era design, through the analysis of literature and documents, this research sorts out and sums up doubts and concludes that design is a system which is needed by culture and history. Therefore, the niche of design lies in culture and history, and the practical niche of Taiwanese culture design lies in the objective interpretations of history. The linguistic environment in the late martial-law society grows prosperous but still has a vague tendency in cultural aspect; also, its core spirit stays in a status of disperse paradox. This causes culture design&apos;&apos;s development to hit a bottleneck and make the practice of Taiwanese culture design remain in a state of self-isolation. However, the multicultural Taiwanese society needs to spiritually unite so that its culture design will have a practical implementation to help itself enter the international community and gain its niche in the world. This research suggests that as the contemporary Taiwanese are anticipating prospective thinkings to create a vista of blue ocean strategy, they, especially, should make the practice of Taiwanese culture design have a distinctive, tough aggressiveness so that the existing core spirit of Taiwan can be carried forward to create economic output values in the late post-martial law era and thereby help steady the niche of Taiwanese culture design. Therefore, this research concludes three proposals: (1) Implement Taiwanese island history to be the foundation of culture design; (2) Construct the Taiwanese life values of design aesthetics; (3) Be duty-bound to the establishment of “Branding Taiwan.”

Hydropower and pumped storage are treated, with mention of Francis and Kaplan turbines. A summary of tidal energy is included. We now go into detail on some aspects of these topics. As these forms of energy come either from the Sun (in an indirect fashion) or from the motion of the Earth and Moon, they are available on an indefinite term into the future.

To study the staged performative transgressions of victims, sadistic cruelty borne by the desire on the part of perpetrators to witness the collective dying of victims, requires analytical orientations beyond those focused exclusively on motivations cast in rational or rationalizing, cognitive or purposive strategic terms. Performativity as a theoretical perspective establishes the explanatory relevance of the unconscious in appraising the dynamics of desire, shame, and sadistic cruelty among perpetrators. Various psychosocial perspectives may be adopted in this regard. Sadistic behaviors are not only cruel; they demand that the cruelty be displayed in the name of the laws of prohibition. Perpetrator behaviors in mass atrocity demonstrate the psychic elements of emotionality and fantasy, paranoia and obsession. Group dynamics in the macabresque ebb and flow in the subterranean tides of anxiety and psychic desire made manifest by reifications and sadistic hate, a central focus of study in the analysis of perpetrator performativity.

The purpose of this research project is to explore the morphology of general capillary systems based on research into the principle of xylematic structures in trees, thereby creating a range of capillary designs using three types of material: plaster, 3D print plastic, and concrete. In addition, computational studies are used to examine various types of computational designs of organic structures, such as columns, driven by physical and environmental conditions such as sunshine, shade, tides and other biological processes to explore three-dimensional particle-based branching systems that define both structural and water delivery paths.

This chapter discusses the advances in technology designed to successfully exploit offshore marine and wind resources. (1) The Counter-Rotating Type Hydro/Tide Power Unit, which is composed of the tandem runners and the peculiar generator with double rotational armatures, is applicable to both rising and falling tides at the power station with the embankment, in place of the traditional bulb type turbines. (2) The Floating Type Ocean Wave Power Station, where a pair of floats lines up at the wavelength spacing, can get the superabundant velocity energy. (3) The Intelligent Wind/Tide Power Unit, which is composed of the tandem wind/tide rotors and the double rotational armatures, is suitable for offshore wind and the tidal stream.

&lt;em&gt;Abstract&lt;/em&gt;.-Understanding estuarine and early marine ecology of Atlantic salmon &lt;em&gt;Salmo salar &lt;/em&gt;smolts within the relatively large and spatially dynamic environments of eastern Maine is challenging. Using ultrasonic transmitters and a large network of fixed receivers, we monitored natural smolt migration in the Narraguagus River, Narraguagus Bay, and coastal environment of the western Gulf of Maine. Our 30-km-long study area began in the lower river and extended 8 km downstream to head-of-tide, 7 km through the estuary, then fanned out seaward 15 km into the western gulf along the interface with Maine Coastal Current. From 1997 to 2004, we increased sampling network density in the estuary and expanded marine arrays further into the Gulf of Maine. We designed receiver networks to monitor all smolt exit routes and were able to (1) estimate smolt survival to the Gulf of Maine, (2) map primary migration paths, and (3) document emigration timing. Survival ranged from 36% to 47% to our outer receiver array. Median migration rates were 0.7 km/h in the estuary to middle bay and 1.0 km/h in the outer bay. Smolts generally traveled with the tides and upon entering saltwater most commonly used the western 6 km of a 23-km-wide embayment. These are among the first quantitative data to estimate survival during early marine migration of wild Atlantic salmon smolts. A Cormack- Jolly-Seber model estimated site efficiency and smolt survival simultaneously, providing a useful methodology and information benchmarks for other studies to better understand emigration dynamics and to help identify mortality factors at sea.

&lt;em&gt;Abstract.&lt;/em&gt;—The abundance, quality, and ecological fate of wood in estuarine and coastal ecosystems result from watershed and, ultimately, landscape-scale processes. Estuaries and coasts receive the wood exported from watersheds, in which fluvial import, retention, processing, and export mostly determine how much wood is available. The dynamics of wood in estuaries and coasts reflect somewhat different processes and rates than in rivers, however. Bidirectional and fluctuating fluvial-tidal flows, multiple sources, and retentive mechanisms generate complex patterns of wood movement through tidal ecosystems. Too often, wood is assumed to perform the same functions in estuaries as in rivers. With a few exceptions— such as wood acting as a disturbance in the rocky intertidal zone—these assumed similarities have not been demonstrated empirically. The dynamics and role of wood need to be examined across the continuum of watershed, estuarine, and marine ecosystems, with the coastal ocean serving as both sinks and sources of wood. Wood’s function in juvenile salmonid habitat is a prime example of extrapolating the role of wood in river ecosystems, often without substantiation, to estuaries and oceans. Large wood is often designed into estuarine wetland restoration projects at significant cost without any real evidence of its importance to fish in tidal environments. The use of wood by juvenile salmonids may be scale-dependent, and it may vary with factors that affect availability of refugia and predation rates, such as tidal elevations, river flow, and diel changes in light intensity. Tides and wind can produce heterogeneous distributions of wood, which may help support the tidal and seasonal movements of juvenile salmon. Management and restoration plans should protect upstream wood sources and delivery processes to maintain and retain the supply of wood to estuaries and coasts. Research on large wood is still needed to evaluate its habitat functions in coastal and estuarine ecosystems to develop criteria for assessing and restoring habitat and to understand variation in the role of large wood across estuary-ocean landscapes.

Ancient Humans Were Aware Of The Tides, but did not know that the far-off moon influenced the ebb and flow of the earth’s oceans. Similarly, the forces that over two hundred years caused black parents to oscillate between segregated and integrated education for their chil­dren were often hidden or disguised. What was obvious was the desire to provide their children with an education. Black children were taught in churches and community halls. Beginning in the nineteenth century, black parents in a few northern cities enrolled their children in public schools as soon as those schools were available,. When, as was often the case, the schooling proved disappointing, frustrated parents attributed the ineffective instruction at the schools to one of two assumptions that turned out to be faulty:…1. If the schools were all black, failure was attributed to the racially segre­gated character of those schools. “If whites were attending these schools,” black parents concluded, “conditions would be better.” This has been the predominant diagnosis both in the nineteenth and, as I shall describe in chapter 10, in the twentieth century. 2. If their children were attending predominantly white schools, blacks assumed that these schools were demonstrably better in physical resources and, thus, the quality of education would be better. In fact, however, school officials provided better schools for middle- and upper-class white students than for the children of the working class. And whatever a white school’s quality, it might not be available to black children or, if it were, it might not be appropriate to meet their needs. Because school officials favor whites, black parents often conclude, our children don’t stand a chance in the integrated schools…. The experience of black parents in Boston, Massachusetts, with separate and integrated school policies, is both instructive and repre­sentative. When public schools opened in Boston in the late eighteenth century, black children were neither barred nor segre­gated. But by 1790, racial insults and mistreatment had driven out all but three or four black children. In this regard, the Boston children’s experience was no different from those of other “free” black children in northern schools. Racial hostility rendered educational equality for black children impossible even though they were attending the same schools as whites.
