Abstract:
A double-change covering design (dccd) is an ordered set of blocks with block size k is an ordered collection of b blocks, B = {B1,B2, · · · ,Bb}, each an unordered subset of k distinct elements from [v] = {1, 2, · · · , v}, which obey: (1) each block differs from the previous block by two elements, and, (2) every unordered pair of [v] appears in at least one block. The object is to minimize b for a fixed v and k. Tight designs are those in which each pair is covered exactly once. We present constructions of tight dccd’s for arbitrary v when k = 2 and minimal constructions for v <= 20 when k =

The complementary advantages of GPS and INS have been the principle driving factor to integrate these two navigation systems as an integrated GPS/INS system in various architectural forms to provide robust positioning. Although the loosely coupled and tightly coupled GPS/INS systems have been in existence for over a decade or two and performed reasonably well, nevertheless, the tracking performance was still a concern in non-benign environments such as dynamic scenarios, indoor environments, urban areas, under foliages etc., where the GPS tracking loops lose lock due to the signals being weak

Abstract:
Nanofiltration (NF) and tight Ultrafiltration (UF) membranes represent a technology that is well suited for high quality drinking water production from source waters with high concentrations of natural organic matter (NOM) or other contaminants. However, the application of these membranes is limited, mainly because of the challenges related to fouling, concentration polarization (CP), system complexity and cost. The aim of the present study was to address these issues and to enable a more widespread application of this technology. Opportunities for simplifying NF and tight UF systems by, f

These transforms, introduced in [20], provide C[1,1]-smooth tight-approximations of the squared distance functions. We introduce a result to calculate explicit formulae for the lower transform of the squared distance functions. Our first main result is the geometric characterisation of critical points of the quadratic lower compensated convex transform Cllambda dist2(x,K), which shows that the geometric non-smooth critical points o

Abstract:
There is currently a need for large diameter flanges for the supply of water in South Africa. These large diameter pipe flanges are required to accommodate pipes with nominal bores of up to 4 m and should successfully withstand internal pressures of up to 8 MPa. No current relevant standard / code contains prescribed design values for flanges which either operate at such high pressures or have such large diameters. Due to this an alternative method of design, by means of non-linear finite element modelling, is proposed. Three types of integral flange designs are considered, namely: flat f

Single crystal nickel-based superalloys are used in modern gas turbines because of their remarkable resistance to creep deformation at elevated temperatures, which is ensured by the addition of significant amounts of refractory elements. Too high concentrations of refractory elements can lead to the formation of topologically-close packed (TCP) phases during exposure to conditions of high temperature and stress which result in the degradation of the creep properties. The traditional methods for predicting the occurrence of TCP phases in Ni-based superalloys have been based on the PHACOMP and n

Conventional microarchitectures exploit multiple levels of parallelism to increase instruction throughput and use application specific instruction sets or hardware accelerators to increase energy efficiency. Reconfigurable microprocessors adopt the same principle of providing application specific hardware, however, with the significant advantage of post-fabrication flexibility. By tracking the slope of auxiliary winding voltage, the controller retrieves the output voltage information at a fixed diode current with a simple analog method, and it thus suppresses the load and line effects on the output voltage. To sense the voltage slope, a compensating ramp is applied to the feedback voltage and the sensing circuit detects the zero-slope point instead.
