Abstract:
This book is about what it calls the “age of questions,” which began in the 1820s and 1830s as a result of three major developments: the expansion and politicization of press distribution; the enlargement of the voting franchise (in Britain); and a tight series of international events, including the Greek uprising in the Ottoman Empire (1821–1832) and the Belgian Revolution (1830–1839). The book examines how querists used a variety of questions to span contradictions, arguing that a question/problem arose out of a gap between a universal ideal and a particular reality. Seven distinct arguments regarding the essence of the age of questions are discussed: the national argument, the progressive argument, the argument about force, the federative argument, the argument about farce, the temporal argument, and the suspension-bridge argument. The book draws on certain pieces of evidence to support the divergent claims advanced by querists.

Abstract:
On May 25, 1785, Bernardo de Gálvez arrived in New Spain as acting viceroy, and was confirmed shortly afterwards. Upon his arrival Gálvez adopted a new style of governance which made him very popular with the commoners while raising eyebrows among the elites.Gálvez implemented, or started to implement, a vast array of reforms. The theatre designed as an instrument of popular education. The military was strengthened and re-organized. Mexico city’s urban infrastructure was improved. Plans for the reconstruction of the vice royal palace at Chapultepec were drawn. Education was promoted through the inauguration of the Royal Academy of San Carlos. A new Indian policy was also adopted and implemented in order to pacify the Northern Frontier of the viceroyalty that included a new model for the Spanish Crown’s relationship with the Apache nation. Shortly after Gálvez’s arrival, a severe famine broke out in New Spain. Using the resources of the colonial administration and the collaboration of the Church, public policy measures were put into place; information was collected; indirect taxes were suspended; public health measures were inplemented; a tight price control was adopted; and profiteers were severely prosecuted. After a short illness, Bernardo de Gálvez died on November 30, 1786, after turning forty.

Abstract:
The introduction of the various computation techniques for determining bandstructures, their implications and their pitfalls is the scope of this chapter, which ends up with a realistic representation of the bandstructures of semiconductors. Approaches to the calculation of semiconductor bandstructures—tight binding, orthogonalized plane waves, density functional and k · p—are discussed, with an emphasis on the physical implications through toy models. The effective mass theorem and Wannier functions are introduced as tools to explore nonlocalized and localized behaviors. Spin’s consequence in the valence bandstructure through spin-orbit coupling and the Luttinger Hamiltonian is emphasized. Semiconductor bandgap behavior in group IV, group III-V and group II-VI compounds is explored, including those of nitrides and gapless semiconductors, together with insights into the common semiconductors’ electron bandstructures, density of states and van Hove singularities. The chapter concludes with a discussion of phonon bandstructures.

Abstract:
This chapter illustrates a twofold journey of Conversos, a physical trek northward to freedom and a spiritual journey to the practice of Judaism, throughout the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries. They had no personal experience of life in a Jewish community after the Expulsion from Spain. What united them was a sense of shared oppression at the hands of the Inquisition in Portugal and the collective memory, however faint, of being portugueses de la nación hebrea, homens de nação, or simply members of the nação, the 'Nation'. The chapter explores a distinctive social unit that Conversos formed with extraordinarily tight bonds in Seville, Madrid, Lima, and elsewhere, and a sense of kinship with other Portuguese and Spanish Conversos, wherever they were. This background produced a new and different historical trajectory. The Amsterdam community outstripped the others in culture and affluence and served as their model and guide. Amsterdam, in turn, drew its models of the Jewish community from the Sephardim of Venice. It also examines the emerging new political reality, United Provinces of the Netherlands, and a new model of the Jewish community, the western Sephardi diaspora.

Abstract:
In the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, tens of thousands of Spanish peasants, seamen, and workers emigrated to the United States, and settled in an archipelago of tight-knit enclaves that dotted the entire country from Barre, Vermont to Monterey, California, and from Boise, Idaho, to Tampa, Florida. Neither friars nor conquistadors, those tens of thousands of immigrants from Spain who ended up in the United States represent just a tiny percentage of the millions of Spaniards who, in those same years, crossed the Atlantic, most with the goal of settling in various points of the Spanish-speaking Americas. Herein lies one of the best-kept demographic secrets of the American hemisphere: the massive presence of Spaniards in the Americas –South, Central and North– is largely a post-imperial phenomenon. For every Spanish friar or explorer from Spain’s Age of Empire who is commemorated by a statue or a street name in the United States, there would arrive, during the Age of Immigration, thousands of Spanish seamen, nannies, cigar-makers, canners, miners, shopkeepers, sheepherders and steelworkers. But because their stories do not easily fit into any conventional national narrative in either country, these working-class Spaniards are, for the most part, absent from standard historical accounts of both Spanish emigration and US immigration. They are, as it were, invisible immigrants.

<em>Abstract</em>.-The sea lamprey <em>Petromyzon marinus </em>is a widely distributed anadromous species spawning in coastal rivers and streams throughout the north Atlantic basin. In this paper, we review aspects of sea lamprey migration and ecology that relate to the transport of nutrients and materials to and from freshwater ecosystems and provide an example of a long-term study of a native wild population. Several aspects of lamprey life history (rapid growth in marine phase, many adults spawn in upper reaches of small oligotrophic rivers, all adults die after spawning) suggest that anadromous sea lampreys contribute marine-derived nutrients and materials (MDNM) to freshwater ecosystems. We used long-term (20 years) data on spawner abundance, along with literature-derived concentration values, to estimate the import of nutrients and materials to a spawning reach of the Fort River, a tributary of the Connecticut River in western Massachusetts, USA. Sea lamprey imported as much as 0.26 g of P per square meter of stream, as much as of 20% of the total annual P loading to a similar system where a full P budget has been developed. While the MDNM contribution of sea lamprey may be substantial, other aspects of their life history and habitat use may limit the overall magnitude and direction of lamprey influence on freshwater ecosystems. Spawning requirement for rocky substrate within a narrow size range may limit import at the watershed scale. In addition, marine survival rates of less than ~1% will result in a net export of nutrients and materials via out-migrating juveniles (transformers). While there is currently no information on survival rates in wild anadromous populations, the tight link between adult survival and prey/host fish populations observed in landlocked Great Lakes systems suggests that the ecological role of sea lamprey may be strongly related to the abundance of coastal marine fishes. Further research on adult survival, juvenile dispersal and distribution, and the paths of nutrient and material uptake in spawning streams are necessary to more fully evaluate the role of anadromous sea lamprey in the transport of MDNM.

Since the consumers are dispersed in a large, highly complex, three dimensional environment, implementation of a Radial scheme results in many cables spanning over large distances of the ship. An alternative strategy is to introduce power into major portions of the vessel via a power bus and hang consumers locally from the bus. Such m

<p>The recently completed $559M reconstruction of the Dolphin Expressway‐Palmetto Expressway Interchange in Miami, FL (USA) represents an excellent example of severe urban site constraints due to the amount of traffic, the proximity to a busy international airport and the surrounding urban landscape. This paper illustrates the solutions adopted by the design‐build team to deal with the challenges of this urban site. Further, it explains how they were integrated in various phases of the project which was completed over a five‐year span, and completed in 2016.</p><p>The main fo

This paper describes the development of an in-house code for sizing optimization of blades with constraints imposed on blade’s natural frequencies and static stresses. The optimization environment includes a three-dimensional parametric model of the blade, interface functions for automated execution of the static and modal finite element analyses as well as post-processing of the results, and optimization algorithm. The blade geometry is represented by section profiles at a number of span-wise stations. Each blade section profile is parametrized by nine intuitive geometric parameters which con

This river crossing is the only connection across the river for the entire tram network in Gothenburg. It is also a very important connection for busses, pedestrians, bicycles and cars. The location of the new bridge, close to the existing bridge in the central part of Gothenburg, generates several challenges that requires special attention such as: logistics, construction planning and minimal impact on the ex

Abstract Environmental constraints on exposure to hexavalent chrome and its compounds has prompted increased utilization of HVOF thermal spray coating technology to implement new overhaul repairs for components that are currently chrome plated. Proposed 1998 EPA and OSHA standards place very tight restrictions on the Personal Exposure Limit (PEL) for hexavalent chrome, which will impact chrome plating operations and most likely attendant grinding operations. Historically, HVOF or D-gun type repairs involved bearing bores, journals on main shafts, mid span supports, dimensional restorations and
