Send My Love to Tijuana I Tijuana Sends Her Love replaces an existing pedestrian bridge that connects two vibrant neighborhoods in Tijuana, Mexico. The bridge is strategically situated to integrate itself into the city's urban fabric, while maintaining visibility from the United States Border and the San Ysidro Border crossing, the most heavily trafficked border crossing in the world. There, passage is tightly controlled, extending wait-times to unbearable lengths for even those permitted to cross legally. Nearby, my project provides an alternative portal that is universally accessible to those who wish to reconnect with their loved ones by way of another, virtual means: free videoconferencing within dedicated spaces. These spaces range in scale, beginning with the precedent of the phone booth for private, intimate conversations and ending with large-scale public projection zones for families. In either case, families and loved ones are reconnected on opposite sides of the border in a communion whose significance is witnessed by the monumental scale and form of the architectural composition. Not only is the building's form significant, its details also contribute to its monumental character. While the fagade facing the United States is a severe 900 foot-long, 40 foot-high, rectangular, corrugated steel, reflection of the existing border "fence", its symbolic severity is subtly subverted by an array of millions of end lit fiber optic cables. These cables are translucent hairs that blow in the breeze and that channel in from the fagade through the building's folded steel structure, and out into rooms, out beside walkways, and out through ceilings.
(cont.) When light activates one end of the optical cable, it illuminates on the opposite end as well. Therefore, the cable channeling system allows for daylight to penetrate the interior spaces, whereas at night, the fagade is illuminated by the internally lit building. The illumination on the fagade is an eery, abstract depiction of the activities inside, as shadows from pedestrians deactivate the cables they pass, and the family-conferencing projections activate cables that portray content on the fagade. Finally, individual lights within the personal telecommunications rooms, when in use, can also be mapped to their own zones. Thus, form and fiber optics enhance the symbolic value of the bridge, which anyway represents the human desire to connect, and directly opposes the ever impassible border wall, which is an embodiment of military might and the distinctly human desire to separate. This thesis project was inspired by my personal experiences with the family members left behind in Central and South America by their dearest relatives-children, husbands, wives-who journeyed illegally to United States in order to garner a financial foothold to support their loved ones back home.

As a town that has heavy migration, Tijuana is in constant need of social housing for its lower income families. The demands of the population have created an overload on the government, and some third parties have begun addressing the housing issues. A study was carried out on two different types of social housing organizations that have presence in Mexico. An analysis of their policies and objectives, along with a brief statement of their purpose and creation accompanies the study. Surveys and interviews were conducted on-site with inhabitants from both projects, INFONAVIT and Habitat for Humanity. The former is government sponsored and the latter is funded by an international non- profit organization; these are factors that influence the magnitude and impact of their programs. Their relevance and pertinence to the socioeconomic group that they serve is reflected through architectural modifications that the dwellers make in their houses. An economic analysis of costs for the modifications yields a perspective of the beneficiaries' space needs and priorities. The results from the surveys show that inhabitants modify their homes with simple upgrades; those who do not have modifications plan to carry them out in the future. They have concerns for security and aesthetics. Although these constructions are built with the economic factor in mind, the owners always upgrade their houses for the sake of comfort, and they express their willingness to pay more for the constructions, if it guarantees them improved architectural finishes. In the final part of the thesis some suggestions and proposals are made in the interest of improving design standards and living conditions in the constructions that these social organizations produce; suggestions are also made for future adaptability of the base models that are built by each of the organizations under scrutiny.

Full textIn regard to the effects of the present expansion of global capitalism, the U. S. - Mexico border has become one of the most important industrial zones in the world. By focusing on the experiences of women workers and on the forms of transnational social protest these women are involved with, this research analyses the socio-cultural consequences of the maquiladora industry. Exploring these dynamics through the concept of social experience -i. E. Individual reflexivity- I designate the capabilities of women workers to gain autonomy both from the dominating logics of global capitalism and of local patriarchy. The border is a social mirror reflecting the future of Mexico and a laboratory for the U. S. -Mexico relationships. It could be used as an example of transborder collaboration and of mutual understanding between both countries. Also it could be a wasteland of degradated environment, social violence, drugs, and mutual incomprehension. Finally, it could be a symbol of the negative effects of trade integration, institutional weakness, injustice and social deprivation. It was my intend to demonstrate how this could be also the place of a new social participation against the violence of globalization

Full textThis dissertation examines the construction of cultural identities among mexicans living either side of us / mexico border. It is divided into three sections. The dissertation begins with an elaboration of methodology necessary for understanding the process through which the cultural differences characteristics on the border region are produced, as well as understanding the differences themselves. It emphasises the fact that cultural differences are not only reproduced but also produced through the course of history. Next, the author examines the ways in which the immigrants' identities are reelaborated, focusing on the principle axes around which they are structured. The goal is to understand the role of three such axes : (a) local resources and migrant networks, (b) religion and religious community, and (c) the construction of ethnicity. Finally, the author examines hispanic participation in the political sphere, the articulation of identity, and others forms of collective action. This final section concludes by considering, from the perspective of the border region, the debate over multiculturalism and the management of cultural difference

This thesis addresses the relationship between San Diego, California and Tijuana, Mexico. Although these two cities are part of a single landscape and ecology, they are divided, not only by a physical wall, but very different cultural, social, political and economic realities. This thesis is a proposition about exchange. Economic exchange has always been the driving force for interaction between San Diego and Tijuana. Their relationship has operated at a very fundamental level, rooted in a market economy driven by the laws of supply and demand. My goal is to build on this interaction, to exchange beyond the mutual economic interests and to provide a forum for a broadened, more meaningful exchange. Social, cultural and environmental exchange will heighten understanding and mutual respect, and begin to dissipate the psychological barriers that exist between the two sides, serving to better connect the people of this border region. I believe the foremost place for such interaction is the border region, itself. Currently, it is a painfully disconnected, forbidding and blighted region that harshly articulates the uneasy relationship between the two sides. The border marks a physical line of convergence that could begin to celebrate intellectual and social convergence. My proposal offers an east-west solution to this north-south problem. It establishes a new directionality that runs parallel to the border rather than across it. This new corridor uses the landscape to emphasize that which is shared, while establishing points of reflection and dialogue. The intention is to reinvent the border region as a critical juncture between cultures and nations, making the border not a point or a line, but an engagement.

Full textThis thesis deals with the history and construction of the social problem of Mexican street children and with the actual experience of marginalised youth in Mexico City and Tijuana. Symbol of the issue of “abandoned children” in developing countries, this social category has become one of the priorities of the first democratically elected Mexican government in 2000. The thesis examines how the world of “street children” is shaped by analysing the actors of social intervention and the effects of the country’s deep political and societal changes on these marginalised urban youth.Through a socio-historic approach from 1880 to nowadays, this thesis firstly studies the emergence of this category within the public space and its construction as a social problem, embedded in the socio-political transformations of the country. By exploring iconographic and documentary supports, the analysis identifies a constant tension between the figure of ‘victim’ and of ‘delinquent’, a tension which goes hand in hand with the anxiety produced by the tremendous urban development of Mexico. This ethnographic research, carried out in Mexico and Tijuana between 2003 and 2010, demonstrates the relevance of observing at city level in order to understand how the policies, representations and social experiences articulate. The analysis brings to light the specific features of these two cities in their perception and treatment of the problem as well as in the resulting individualisation modes and biographies of these young people. In Tijuana, a “border effect” is observed, whereas the streets dynamics in Mexico City are characterised by a “capital effect”. Finally, the gender analysis demonstrates the tensions between the appropriation of a law terminology in the everyday practices of the organisations working with this population and the traditional image of a sexualised and hierarchic family, embedded in the national narrative

Full textNowadays, tourism is one of the most dynamic phenomena around the globe. Beyond its tangible aspects, tourist activity is a social process that has a strong spatial component, where the social and the natural realms uniquely converge. This makes tourism an extremely diverse process that configures spaces and determines times. In oedre to analyze the complexity of tourism in the territory of the coastal corridor Tijuana-Ensenada (COCOTEN), this paper adopts a geographical point of view, although it is not limited to this perspective. In that respect, several distinct methodological approaches are employed to encompass the object of study. Such approaches come from the wide spectrum of methods found within the social sciences. Among these, this study emphasizes land use planning ; the historical reconstruction of events that led to the actual configuration of COCOTEN ; the compilation of user's characteristics ; a census of services offered, including urban and tourism infrastructure, and the evolution of land use patterns in the region. .

Full textThis thesis investigates the representation of violence in the works of six authors from Tijuana or who have had their artistic and productive center in Tijuana: Rosina Conde, Luis Humberto Crosthwaite, Heriberto Yépez, Regina Swain, Mayra Luna and Rafa Saavedra. What these books have in common —besides having been published in the last 30 years— is that this fact allows them to be placed within the framework of postmodernism and a postmodern aesthetic. The main hypothesis of this investigation is that in the works of all these writers a connection can be found between private violence (sexual, familiar etc.) and public violence (economic, political, social, etc.). Therefore, personal conflicts —and the power dynamics that occur through them— are situated in a border context where the local, national and global dimensions overlap. After looking for a synthesis among biopolitics, postcolonial studies and border studies from a theoretical perspective, specific semantic elements that connect the public dimension with the private one have been proposed for the work of each author. In the case of Rosina Conde, it is about the family; in the one of Heriberto Yépez, the “maquila” and the family; Luis Humberto Crosthwaite's work has highlighted the importance of territory, both the neighborhoods and the border between the United States and Mexico. In the books of Swain, Luna and Saavedra, emphasis has been placed on a shift of attention towards the subject. Therefore, although certain semantic elements don’t lose their interest (the family or the couple), it has been underlines how the outlook of these artists has changed, becoming more and more attentive to the isolation of their characters. From the formal point of view, then, a tendency to break certain narrative schemes has been shown, gambling on fragmentation, on the use of both Spanish and English, or on a hybridization of literary genres and experimental forms of conjugation of the literary with the metaliterary dimenson.

The adults and nymphs of Kempnyia tijucana are herein described, being differentiated from the other species of the genus by distinct morphological characters. ln the nymphs the absence of the intersegmental gills III is remarkable, not occurring in any other species of the genus. The comparison between the nymphs of K. tijucana and others from the same genus provided thirteen reliable morphological characters to distinguish them. These characters were employed to make a diagnostic key of the morphotypes of the genus. The comparison of these nymphs with those from Macrogynoplax and Anacroneuria provided nine new morphological characters to distinguish these genera. The study of the ontogeny of K. tijucana showed that in younger nymphs the epicranial suture has a similar feature to that found in Anacroneuria. The majority of the nymphs (97%) were collected in areas of fast flow, being associated to less fragmented litter deposits. K. tijucana has a peculiar association with a midge of the genus Nanocladius.

This paper analyzes the appearance of the gated communities − phenomenon of the contemporary city − in the Barra da Tijuca district, located in the western part of Rio de Janeiro. This district, occupied from its beginning by high income population, was one of the last frontiers in the expansion of the city. The intensifi cation of its occupation started in the 1970 s, after the implementation the Pilot Plan, elaborated in 1968 by architect Lúcio Costa, according to the premises of Modern Urbanism. Urban planning, associated with the action of the real estate market and the increase in the urban violence, resulted in the decline of the urban nucleus established by Costa and the appearance of the gated communities − in the 1980 s − as the top real estate product. This model of dwelling, characterized by isolated towers in large stretches of land, with vast green areas and leisure facilities, turned the district into the carioca anti-city. resently, Barra da Tijuca is still one of the main areas of expansion in Rio de Janeiro and is a reference in big private developments focused on the high income population.

This doctoral thesis had as its object of investigation the young people immersed in the contemporary and their social/cultural life experiences and, specifically, their relations with the "Time and the Social Space", under the influence of the concept of "nomads in the present time", according to the Alberto Melluci's view (1998). This work was developed on the Social Psychology Post Graduation School, at the Universidade do Estado do Rio de Janeiro. Twenty high/middle class young individuals with ages from 17 to 20, from the Barra da Tijuca neighborhood, city of Rio de Janeiro, were selected by indication. In order to understand them, we used the "Case Study" method, where a range of procedures were combined, such as: non-directive structured interviews, living samples and statements' selection method. An analysis of the interviews through a qualitative research was done, with the intent of finding out who are those individuals, their relationship with life, how they perceive the time, how is their space relationship and their politicization to their city and their country. The discussed issue focus on the youth's relationship with this new millennium and its connection with the recent forms of relationship with the temporality, as: the living of the youth and the time. The theory is based on a wide bibliography, with authors such as Gilles Lipovetsky, Nestor Canclini, Norbert Elias, Sharon Zukin, Zigmunt Bauman and other social scientists. Three key concepts were articulated through this work and served as basis for the theory's aspects and for the analysis of the interviews: the young culture, the time and the social space.

Full textThis thesis aims to analyse Barra da Tijucas process of constitution, which is a neighbourhood in the city of Rio de Janeiro. It was named after a landform and were recognised as it for centuries, arising as a territorial limit only in the 1970s. Its development strengthened along the 1950s as an extension of Rio de Janeiros South Zone. Lucio Costa, the same urbanist that projected Brasilia, was invited by the government to rationalise its occupation and does not mention the expression town house complex at all on the Plan Lucio Costa, although this is the form that became the model of neighbourhoods occupation. Town house complex is associated to consumption and idealisation, which is shown as much dwellers speech as the stereotype created to them, the nouveau-riche. Part of prejudice is related to the hollowness of existent cultural facilities, which was planned to be fulfilled by Cidade das Artes. This project is in accord to cities marketing and competition and strategic planning that has started in Rio de Janeiro with the former mayor Cesar Maia. We named the subjectivity experienced in town house complexes as the end of alterity because of the regressivity of Ego ideal that corresponds to mimesis and the narcissism of minor differences. We interpret the Greek myths of Cronus and Odysseus relating them, respectively, to regressive Ego ideal and maturational Ego ideal. On the Tower of Babel myth, we bring to discussion the paramount essence of cities and the urban, videlicet, individualisation. Our methodology consists in literature survey revision and a few interviews

Full textThe love of cariocas for the city of Rio de Janeiro is widely known. As well as the cariocas, there is another social group, called tijucanos, which the love for the neighborhood is peculiar. The Tijuca zone, known by its tradition and development during the 60¿s, due to his local identity ¿ tijucana, definitely deserves prominence in the ¿wonderful city¿. The people of Tijuca can be known as a ¿personality¿ in Rio, and their habits of consumption seldom exceed the area¿s limits. Enclosure of histories and special characteristics, how to be a tijucano, an adjective that people of Tijuca are proud of, is one of the focus of this present study. To be an unconditional tijucano, who loves to walk around in the neighborhood, in the square, enjoy their lives in famous bars, ended up as a peculiarity in the carioca scenario, together with the people of Ipanema, Barra and many others, that together make Rio de Janeiro a unique city. In spite of the increasing visibility, there are few studies trying to understand the way heterosexual men interact with the world of consumer goods. In view of the great interest and in the contemporary world, the meaning of consumption has increased. The object of the present study is to try to understand how the people from Tijuca use the world of consumer goods to ¿become a man¿, i.e., to construct their male heterosexual identity. This analysis is crucial to investigate the construction of masculine gender identity of the people from Tijuca. The study was based on data gathered through deep interviews with nine men from Tijuca during the month of January 2007. The results have shown that the tijucanos interact with the neighborhood services and locals during the process of construction of gender and local identity. It was possible to notice that there are four differents stages, by means of, people use the world of consumer goods to identify themselves as men from Tijuca. Therefore, it is possible to conclude that it occurs the consumption of specific products and places in strategy to: define masculinity and local identity (when young person), move aside, assimilation, acceptation and reinforcement of that identity.

This work presents a settlement analysis of an embankment built on a very soft soil deposit in Barra da Tijuca (Baixada de Jacarepaguá), which is located in Rio de Janeiro’s coast. The geotechnical profile shows a very soft soil with thickness reaching 17 m, with Nspt equal 0. The embankment was built in stages and its settlements were accelerated with prefabricated drains. The construction lasted about 1,5 year and was monitored by means geotechnical instrumentation. Field and laboratory test programs were carried out to define the geotechnical characteristics of the soil. Ten samples were collected from two vertical boreholes before any loading was applied to the soil. To avoid disturbance, each stage of sample process, from sampling to specimen preparation, was conducted with special procedures. Tests have been carried out both in undisturbed (vertical and horizontal directions) and completely disturbed conditions. The specimen preparation procedures are described in detail. Conclusions considered only the results of tests conducted on specimens with excellent quality. The in-situ tests were performed in vertical boreholes next to boreholes where the undisturbed samples were collected and in the same location in which geotechnical instruments group were installed. The analysis of the field and laboratory tests and instrumentation data revealed the existence of two very soft soil layers exhibiting distinct characteristics which are separated by a continuous sand lens. The upper soil layer (from surface down to about 5 m depth), that was probably formed after an unloading geological period of the underlying layer, is characterized by low effective in situ stresses. The underlying soil is also under low in-situ effective stresses, but with a preconsolidation pressure characterized by the difference s’p - s’v0 25 kPa (constant with depth). A correlation between OCR (from consolidation tests) and Su/sv0 ratio (from vane and CPTU tests) for similar soils has been updated. The high compressibility of soils was confirmed by the embankment instrumentation data. Ca/Cc values, higher than usual for most known soils, were found. Practical relationships have been updated to describe the permeability of the deposit. Soil consolidation coefficients were estimated in different ways and values, even though have showed large difference (up to ten times), did not showed tendency when laboratory or field (tests and instrumentation data) values were compared. Disturbance affected the permeability and compressibility (primary and secondary) characteristic of the soils of both layers, but its effects were more severe in the underlying layer. A numerical prediction, in which a creep-soft-soil model was used and parameters obtained from the laboratory tests were considered, lightly overestimated the embankment settlements with time.

Full textThis work has as main objective to further knowledge about some environmental relations in the field of urban slopes and submit proposals for modeling susceptibility to landslides so common in the city of Rio de Janeiro. Following a thought, this dissertation will have as secondary objectives, the production of various intermediate products, layers of environmental data will be used to assist the preparation of the final product and comparative analysis of other models and local laws. Urban areas are environments where human occupation and concentration become intense and, most often, cluttered, become sensitive to gradual local anthropogenic changes, as they are intensified in frequency and intensity. Urban slopes today are great example for environmental degradation, endangering the safety and quality of life of its population, constituting a stage of ecological conflicts. The fast and unplanned growth that has occurred in many cities in developing countries is largely responsible for environmental changes, mischaracterize often original environment. As these changes are made, a number of geomorphic responses, typical of large cities such as landslides and floods, which occur frequently, and often, being not high rainfall totals required for these processes occur (Guerra, 2006). Mankind has been undergoing a process of urbanization, the Brazilian urban population in 2010 comprised approximately 84 percent of total population.

Full textThe territorial behavior is exhibited by animals that compete for resources within a specific defended area. By excluding potential competitors in this area through aggressive behavior, territorialist individuals ensure priority access to essential resources for their survival and reproduction. In anuran amphibians, territoriality has been mainly related to prolonged-breeding species, whose breeding sites are available throughout the year. This study was conducted in a portion of the river in the Tijuca Forest, Rio de Janeiro. There were four consecutive visits to the sampling area in each month (April/2009 to August/2010). The objective was to answer questions about the territorial behavior of Hylodes nasus (home range, site fidelity, agonistic behaviors and physical fighting). The males home range showed a significant relation with number of recapture. The home range estimated for females was slightly larger than males. Males have higher site fidelity than females. The site fidelity showed a significant relation with individuals' SVL and body mass. There were observed 50 agonistic encounters between males, showing 11 aggressive behaviors. There were observed 19 physical fights with males being classified as resident, intruder, winner or loser. All contests were won by resident individuals. Information about the influence of environmental factors on the population of H. nasus, aspects of population structure and description of microhabitat are also provided.

This research objects to contribute in the construction of a methodology that can integrate the boarding of the presence and the circulation of the water in urban environments, detaching the case of floods, with the creation of a mapping that obtains to specialize in detail the phenomenon. Besides, it aims to realize an analysis that allows to an integrated vision of the water - its circulation, storage, and its social-environmental interactions, that were established through the history, relating it to the urban transformations which were derived also by the governmental interventions. This perspective of analysis was inserted in the area of the Grande Tijuca - North Zone of the city of Rio de Janeiro - densely inhabited, with description of waters use shows problems since the initial occupation process. Nowadays, the problems related to the water supply by the general net of the city and the ones related on to the superficial circulation of waters at times of intense rains (that causes frequent urban floods) devastate the population. This work searches to identify the intensity of the changes that happened in the environment concerning to the problems related to the water: the increase in the demand for supplying of the general water net; the basic sanitation; the inputs of sewage effluent on the main canals of draining and the general net of sewer; beyond the superficial draining of the pluvial waters, which causes the floods. It was used as methodology: a historical review of the urban evolution and the presence of the water in the quarters, as well as the review of the physical characteristics of the environment, the analysis of public politics and as the way that the circulation of the water in the quarters of the Grande Tijuca integrates in the space. In order to study the presence and the use of the water resources it was used the census data of the IBGE, aiming at an evolutionary analysis from1991 to 2000 that they had resulted in mappings. Moreover, an unpublished Floods Chart of 2006 was realized, which specializes the phenomenon in a 1:8000 scale and allows a rich analysis in details, as the extension and the variability of the level of floods on the street by street of the quarters. The many urban floods in the Grande Tijuca would be the reply of the environment to the transformations that occurs for long time. With the reduction of the quality of life, the Grande Tijuca - and the city of Rio de Janeiro as a whole will be white of politics aiming at the control of this operating process. However, these do not seem to glimpse the totality of the system, and they present themselves as disconnected and pointed repairs, because they dont object the control and elimination of the floods. The example of the Tijuca, not only evidences the necessity of a more including vision of the planning and management of the water resources, as well as the urban space as a whole, inserted in a management that has led to a real integrated local development.

Full textDuring the last two decades, the Brazilian real estate market underwent several changes, first structural, with the adoption of a legal framework that resolved the open questions of the sector, which would in a second moment boost the gains of the sector when favored by an economic conjuncture, both globally and locally. In mid-2014, a market that had been extremely hot since 2007 had already given way to a situation marked by a sharp drop in income levels, increasingly less affordable and more expensive credit, and strong distrust on the part of investors and real estate buyers. The maintenance of the scenario described above - due to factors related to interest, unemployment, political crisis, etc. - culminated in the picture of voluminous stocks and rare launches that can be seen in Rio de Janeiro since then, especially in the West Zone. In order to optimize the slow resumption expected for the market starting in 2018, construction companies and developers are investing in technological innovations aimed at increasing efficiency in some stages of the incorporation projects, such as architecture, engineering and construction (AEC) sales and marketing, legal procedures, etc. However, we do not yet see in the real estate market measures that affect the adherence between what is offered and what the target consumer really wants. In this context, this work aims to explain the preferences of real estate consumers in Barra da Tijuca through the application of the conjoint analysis method. To this end, a focus group was formed with real estate professionals aiming at defining the main attributes of such product and its respective levels. With the main points defined, a fractional factorial project was carried out with fourteen products, which, in turn, were submitted to a consumer survey, in order to reveal their preferences. In the midst of the various analyzes made possible by the research, it was evident that, among the selected attributes, the location was the one that showed greater weight in the consumer decision, followed by the size/typology of the apartment and - contrary to what was initially imagined - the leisure structure was the least important attribute for consumers. In time, it is in the interest of the market that studies like this are made for other growth vectors of the city (such as Campo Grande and Guaratiba) and periodically, since preferences change with the new generations entering the labor market and gaining purchasing power, which clearly occurs among the millennials, a generation born in the mid -1980s and 2000, which is currently not only redefining these preferences but also indicating the future trend of demand.

Full textThis assignment aims to comprehend what Barra da Tijuca means and for that purpose we use as method and epistemological basis phenomenology, through the concepts of Gestalt and Intersubjectivity, besides focusing our analysis in the conception of space as beings dimension. Thus, we develop an approach to the history of city phenomenology since Renascence rupture until Modernism arises. In this sense Brasilia and its modernity became fundamental to understand the constitution of carioca modernity, once the transference of the capital was foreseen since 1891. The modernity of Barra da Tijuca is substantiated by the carioca mimicry of Brasilia, by AI-5 and by the universality of techniques, which is conventionally named as post-modern. Yet, from the cosmopolitan modernity of the end of the 1950s, we experience today a cosmopolitan pastiche that is derived by the Brazilian identity itself, whose imago we defined through Medusa-mother-narcissist son.

Full textThis thesis investigates why and how Armed Forces deploy anti-crime activities, and it assesses the impact such interventions entail for democracies. Combining historical institutionalist and rational choice approaches, the thesis focuses on two cities, namely, Rio de Janeiro (Brazil) and Tijuana (Mexico), where the state governors requested the military to assist public security efforts from 2007 to 2014. Relying on analysis of 100 semi-structured interviews, archival sources and information obtained through freedom of information acts, this research tracks the different phases of military operations in security, from decision-making to policy implementation. The systematic analysis of criminal statistics before and after operations indicate that such actions have a limited effect on permanently reducing lethal violence. Moreover, military interventions are usually followed by a set of social actions that will potentially improve the reputation of the Armed Forces to the detriment of the image of civilian agencies. Finally, and contrary to conventional wisdom that military urban patrols are merely temporary events, the research in this thesis demonstrates that military interventions in anti-crime activities transform legislation, jurisdiction, military doctrine and education, and that they bring long-lasting changes in the scope of military and police actions. Due to institutional modifications, politicians in general, and state governors in particular, are more tempted than ever to rely on Armed Forces for short-term political gains, even at the expense of the liberal dimension of democracy

Full textQuotations, allusions and references to Dante Alighieri\'s The Divine Comedy started to appear frequently and significantly in the works of Machado de Assis during the 1870\'s. They can be found in all genres Machado worked with, from poetry to criticism, from newspaper columns (crônicas) to prose, evidencing the strong impression that Dante\'s work left in the Brazilian writer. This thesis is about the references to Dante in Machado de Assis\'s works from 1873 to 1881, beginning with Americanas, passing through Helena and Memórias póstumas de Brás Cubas, and finally \"O alienista\". It aims, accordingly, to demonstrate that Machado de Assis tailored his themes, style, sketches and repertoire to fit in the tradition of high literature, especially that of the Comedy. Such experience shows the oscillation between contrasting styles in Machado\'s work - the elevated and the low, the sublime and the vulgar -, which the author conciliates by employing combinations, fusions, imitations and parodies to bring together such opposite poles.

O primeiro grupo apresenta larvas menores predominando no verão e adultos no inverno. O segundo grupo apresenta adultos predominando no verão e larvas menores no inverno.
ln a study carried out on Elmidae in a first order stream at Tijuca Forest, Rio de Janeiro, RJ (Brazil), samples were taken from four substrate types: litter from pools, hard rocks, sand and litter from riffles. A total of 1542 individuals, being 246 adults and 1296 larvae, of 7 species: Austrolimnius laevigatus (Grouvelle, 1889), Cylloepus sp., Gonielmis sp., Heterelmis sp., Macrelmis sp., Neoelmis sp. and Phanocerus clavicornis Sharp, 1882. All taxa were redescribed. Pertinent characters for recognition of the various taxa are illustrated. Litter from riffles showed the highest abundance per substrate and winter presented the highest abundances among seasons. Gonielmis is for the first time reported to Brazil. Based on the biomass of the most abundant species, two life cycle patterns were found. Heterelmis sp. presented smaller larvae predominating in summer and later instars appearing in winter. On the other hand, Phanocerus clavicornis presented the later instars appearing in summer and smaller larvae in winter. Apparently the main environmental variables affecting Elmidae spatial and temporal distribution were temperature and water level.

Full textThis Master’s thesis in Urban and Environmental Engineering, deals with the problem of locating a network of public facilities. This topic is certainly important whenever one strives for efficient and sustainable urban planning. As in any large city, the location of a public facility affects the movement of people, transportation flows, infrastructure distribution, product logistics and waste management, among other activities. Such topic grows in importance when the study is directed to urban settings facing large growth rates and which demand constant changes in the equipment network. This is the case of most large Brazilian cities that continue to undergo significant density increases resulting from real estate speculation and internal migration. Therefore, the thesis’ theme draws upon several disciplines of the Urban and Environmental Engineering Program professional master’s program and meets its objectives.

Full textThe discussion starts from the principle that space is a social product and not a subject, as some public policies have been executing. The appropriation of spaces that were not empty, using the sports mega events as a justification, signals a fundamental moment in the capitalist reproduction process. This process brings the conflict of the space as a place of appropriation and use opposed to the space as a reproduction of value and wealth. In this sense, the city of Rio de Janeiro, which historically uses urban development plans in order to legitimize spatial changes in fragments of the city, has continued this process in recent years, through the implementation of strategic plans and realization of the Olympic Games. This paper objective is to analyze the socio-spatial changes brought to the Vila Autódromo community, located in the Barra da Tijuca Rio de Janeiro city, because of the Olympic Games Rio-2016. One specific objective is to identify the social actors and interests involved in the removal of this community. To achieve this goal, the paper uses theoretical and documental methodology based in normative and legal documents related to the removal process experienced by the Vila Autódromo since 1993, as well as photographic documents and maps, equally imperatives to understand the object of the research. Inseparably, field surveys in the Vila Autódromo and the city of Rio de Janeiro were conducted through descriptive and analytical perspectives, with application of qualitative interviews and content analysis of the data that underlies the conflict between the interests of residents, the government and private companies in an attempt to understand how the socio-spatial changes are part of the place, the city and the global economies. The Vila Autódromo stands out in this scenario for its residents\' resistance struggle to stay in their living space and the consolidation of a community that sees the social value of land and not just its market value, indicating the nature of conflict for the right to housing that is established in the city of Rio de Janeiro today

Full textThe urban marketing and strategic planning have been used in a dynamic which the production consumption and profit are expected aspects in result of the actions of public power. The urban promotion re-creates new images to be sold in the global market, while promote spatial rearrangements in order to adjust them to the new local needs. The use of culture as a tool of strategic planning and urban marketing, using cultural icons buildings to leverage urban promotion and renew processes in different parts of the world. This thesis analyse the construction of Cidade da Música/Artes cultural complex in Rio de Janeiro, based on the hypothesis that although such insertion follows strategic dictates of urban promotion, it did not result in substantial transformations to the region and did not reach recommended targets for this model planning.

CAPES
Purpose the systematic survey of the Teredinidae present at the estuary of Lagoa da Tijuca, RJ, Brazil; the caracterization of the area concerning the activity of these organisms and the analysis of the spatial distribution of the present species according to the gradient of salinity. Using experimental panels composed of pinewood sheets (Araucaria angustifolia (Bertol) o. Kuntze) in 5 stations, seven species of Teredinidae were found: Lyrodus floridanus (Bartsch, 1922); Teredo navalis Linnaeus, 1758; Teredo furcifera Martens, 1894; Teredo bartschi Clapp, 1923; Bankia fimbriatula Moll & Roch, 1931; Bankia gouldi (Bartsch, 1908) and Bankia carinata (Gray, 1827). It was elaborated figures, description and keys to the identification of all species found out. Lagoa da Tijuca seemed to be an area of moderate activity of Teredinidae. The results also showed the existence of a possible seasonal change regarding mainly to the atmospheric precipitation and to the consequent variation of salinity. We noticed a decrease in the number of species and specimens as we entered the lagoon. The spatial distribution is discussed for each specie. We also discussed the 0influence of other factors such, as temperature and fouling.
