Abstract:
Khichdi is a simple dish prepared in the north Indian city of Rampur in the Rohilkhand region of Uttar Pradesh by cooking rice with urad dal and spices. With historical and cultural significance, it remains staple to the winter diet of all social strata. Since the 1980s, however, the rice variety previously used, tilak chandan, has experienced near-extinction in the face of growing dependence on hybrid varieties. The disappearance of this local rice reflects broader trends in agro-biodiversity associated with the Green Revolution compounded by global climate change. This essay explores these eco-cultural tensions by charting the efforts of an interdisciplinary and international collaboration bringing together historians, plant scientists, and farmers to resurrect tilak chandan and other traditional varieties in the Rampur rice belt. Field trials at Benazir Farm in Rampur (2020–22) revealed the challenges of cultivating local heritage varieties, including: (1) recovery of seeds; (2) longer growing cycles, meaning higher exposure to pests and fungal infections; (3) height and uneven growth, making plants prone to lodging when hit by weather vagaries compounded by climate change; and (4) very low outputs resulting in high prices. Still, there remains high demand for tilak chandan and other traditional varieties due to their distinct sensory attributes of taste, texture, and aroma linked to cultural and gastronomic heritage. To make these landraces more available and reliable in India’s current soil and climate conditions, we suggest incorporating their preferential characteristics into a form that is also high-yielding, drought tolerant, and pest resistant.

Abstract:
This article reviews a new translation of a classic work of Marathi literature, the autobiography of Lakshmibai Tilak, which tells the story of her life with the great Christian poet Narayan Vaman Tilak. Three English translations of the autobiography are compared, and the story of the Tilaks is summarized. The meaning of discipleship to Jesus in Hindu contexts is explored. The challenge of translation is apparent, and appeal is made for further mining of Marathi original writings to bring out in yet deeper ways the genius and significance of Tilak.

<strong>Abstract:</strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak was one of the foremost leaders of the Indian independence movement and played a pivotal role in shaping modern Indian nationalism. His trials&mdash;particularly the two notable ones in 1897 and 1908&mdash;serve as significant moments in the history of colonial repression and the struggle for India's freedom. This paper explores the legal, political, and social implications of these trials, examining Tilak&rsquo;s role in challenging British colonial rule, his use of propaganda through the press, and the wider context of political resistance in colonial India. It also reflects on the transformation of Tilak from a regional leader to a pan-Indian nationalist figure and analyzes how his legal battles marked a turning point in the nationalist movement

Abstract:
This article is a historical inquiry into the sedition trial in 1908 of Bal Gangadhar Tilak, one of the most important anticolonial leaders in twentieth-century India. It argues that Tilak, in the grand spectacle of this political trial, rejected the British discourse of imperial justice that had served as the ground of the British Empire until then, and claimed a new discourse of legislative freedom for the people of India. The trial thus marked a fundamental discursive rupture in the history of empire and paved the way for mass anticolonial movements under the leadership of Gandhi.

Abstract:
Bal Gangadhar Tilak (1856–1920) attempted throughout his public life to mobilize the Indian populace for mass political action. He did this by means of his speeches, journalism, leadership and philosophy. His desire was to throw off the yoke of British colonialism, to deliver his countrymen out of bondage. To this end Tilak sought a cogent and comprehensive, yet distinctly Indian, justification for anti-British pro-Hindu activism. He believed that the divergent sects of India could converge to form ‘a mighty Hindu nation’ if they would only follow the original principles of the Hindu tradition as set forth in such texts as the Rāmāyana and the Bhagavadgītā. And this convergence should be the goal of all Hindus.1 Tilak's interpretations of these texts, especially the Gītā, provided him with his ‘justification’ which rationalized his political work in religious guise.

Abstract:
This essay revises the common assumption that non-violence has been central to political modernity in India. The “extremist” nationalist B. G. Tilak, through a foundational philosophical reinterpretation of the Bhagavad Gita, created a modern theology of the Indian “political”. Tilak did so by directly confronting the question of the possibility of the “event” of war and the ethics of the conversion of kinsmen into enemies. Writing in the aftermath of the Swadeshi movement and from a prison cell in Rangoon, Tilak interpreted action as sacrificial duty that created a vocabulary of violence in which killing was naturalized. Violence, whether conceptual or otherwise, was not directed towards the “outsider” but was of meaning only when directed against the intimate. Unlike the distinction between friend and foe that has been taken as central to the understanding of the political in the twentieth century, it was instead the fraternal–enmity issue that framed the modern political in India. Tilak foregrounded the idea of a de-historicized political subject, whose existence was entirely dependent upon the event of violence itself. This helps to explain both the unprecedented violence that accompanied freedom and partition in 1947 and also the fact that it has remained unmemorialized to the present day.

Abstract:
The Mughal Empire as the major polity in India preceding the colonial regime was seen by British historians as a Muslim regime, imposed over a Hindu majority, and this fitted into their picture of two irreconcilable religious camps, existing within India, whose mutual conflict was kept at bay only because of the intervention of the colonial power. Tilak accepted this picture and saw Shivaji as the leader of Hindu resistance against foreign, Muslim domination. His early views were, however, modified in later years when he realised that overtures should be made to Muslims in order to strengthen the national struggle. The tag of ‘foreign’ was removed from the Mughals. It was argued that because Akbar’s successors no longer followed his enlightened policy, Shivaji rose against the Mughals and so must be treated as a national hero. On the other hand, Gandhi from his South Africa days was not prepared to denounce Muslim rulers, including the Mughals, as foreigners or as evil. While not prepared to concede to any religion’s superiority over another, he was critical of what he thought to be Akbar’s attempt to unite all religions into one. On the other hand, he praised Mughal rulers for their tolerance and even defended Aurangzeb though on the basis only of what Mohammad Ali, for long his political associate, told him! Unlike Jawaharlal Nehru, Gandhi did not explicitly extol composite culture possibly because while he wished that all religions tolerate each other, he did not want them to get mixed up.

Abstract:
Summary Objectives: A Clinical Information System, serving more than 2,000 users was to be implemented at three hospitals of TILAK (Tiroler Landeskrankenanstalten GmbH), including the University Hospital of Innsbruck. The system was intended to integrate data from radiology, laboratory, and pathology subsystems with patient data. Methods: Using Cerner Millennium™ software and Health Level 7 standards, the first stage of an Electronic Patient Record (EPR) was built. Direct data entry was facilitated using either a Microsoft Word text processor (with subsequent authentication workflow) or structured forms. An enterprise-wide scheduling module allows coordination and storage of patient appointments directly in the EPR. As required by security policy, the Cerner software regulates the varying degrees of information exchange among organizations and departments within the enterprise. Results: First experiences indicate satisfactory acceptance of system functionalities. The introduction of Cerner Millennium at TILAK has achieved essential goals defined at the beginning of the project. Basic functionalities – free text documentation, standardized documentation, scheduling, and some parts of order entry – are offered in a user friendly manner. Integration with existing systems to complete the EPR has been successful using standard interfaces (HL7). Conclusion: TILAK concluded that it was possible to successfully implement a Clinical Information System (CIS) developed mainly for the American market in a European healthcare environment. Some adaptations and functional extensions were necessary (e.g., the discharge summary “Arztbrief”). The system had enough flexibility to meet the requirements and specifications of European healthcare processes. A key factor of success was the establishment of a basic level of understanding and communication between the software vendor and the TILAK user community.

Abstract:
Sarojini lived and created in those stirring times when India was passing though the stages of her struggle for freedom. It was the age of such great patriots and freedom-fighters as Gandhi, Nehru, Gokhale, Tilak and many others and she had close contacts with all these heroic personalities. Patriotism was in the air so to say, and Sarojini could not remain unaffected by the spirit of the times. After her meeting with Gandhi in 1914, she herself plunged into the thick of the bottle, and her letters and speeches are full of her deeply felt love for her motherland. This love is also reflected at every step in her poetry. India was is her blood; it was as part and parcel of herself, and the note of patriotism is struck in numerous poems written at different periods. It is expressed in her poems, ‘To India’, ‘The Gift of India’, ‘An Anthem of Love’, ‘Lokman Tilak’, etc.

Abstract:
This study analyses three interpretations of Gītā that were published during the first half of the 20th century: those of Tilak, Gandhi and Ambedkar. The analysis begins with a narrative that explains the process that took place between 1785 and 1882, through which Gītā achieved the reputation of being the most representative book of the Hindus. From then on, Gītā was interpreted by Indian leaders for their own political purposes. Thus, Tilak emphasized the principles of ‘just war’ to rationalize revolutionary violence against British rule of India. Gandhi, who opposed all forms of violence, reinterpreted the Gītā as a text of non-violence. Ambedkar, one of Gandhi’s strongest rivals, warned against the conservative social philosophy present in the Gītā, as he felt that the text justified the social caste system. While Tilak’s and Ambedkar’s interpretations were textually sustainable, Gandhi’s was less so. However, Gandhi insisted on the correctness of his interpretation. Such insistence resulted in his interpretation of the Gītā eclipsing the textual intent.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Soybean (<em>Glycine max</em> L.) is one of the most important oilseed cash crops and the fastest growing crop in India as well as in the world due to its high productivity, profitability and vital contribution towards maintaining soil fertility. The present investigation was carried out over the Soyabean field during <em>the </em>Kharif season by using a Tilak air sampler. The correlation with environmental parameters and airborne fungal spores plays an important role in the seasonal development of many plant diseases. The present study reveals the actual disease incidence and prevalence of airborne pathogenic fungal spores were responsible for diseases on certain crops. Some of them are <em>Alternaria</em> leaf spot (<em>Alternaria</em>), Target Leaf Spot (<em>Corynespora cassiicola),</em> Frogeye leaf spot, (<em>Cercospora sojina)</em> and Anthracnose (<em>Colletotrichum</em>).&nbsp; The present study will be sustainable for agro-economy and beneficial for growers to enhance the current knowledge on identification and determining incidence levels of different diseases of a certain crop. Knowing the disease history of a field and keeping abreast of reported disease development during the growing season helps to protect yield potential.

Abstract:
In October and November of 1984, after the assassination of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi by her Sikh bodyguards, approximately 3500 Sikh men were killed in Delhi, India. Many of the survivors—Sikh widows and their kin—were relocated thereafter to the “Widow Colony”, also known as Tilak Vihar, within the boundary of Tilak Nagar in West Delhi, as a means of rehabilitation and compensation. Within this colony lies the Shaheedganj Gurdwara, frequented by widows and their families. Based on ethnographic fieldwork, I explore the intersections between violence, widowhood, and gendered religious practice in this place of worship. Memories of violence and experiences of widowhood inform and intersect with embodied religious practices in this place. I argue that the gurdwara is primarily a female place; although male-administered, it is a place that, through women’s practices, becomes a gendered counterpublic, allowing women a place to socialize and heal in an area where there is little public space for women to gather. The gurdwara has been re-appropriated away from formal religious practice by these widows, functioning as a place that enables the subversive exchange of local knowledges and viewpoints and a repository of shared experiences that reifies and reclaims gendered loss.

Abstract:
Gladiolus (Gladiolus grandiflora L.) is a significant commercial flower that has been grown all over the world since the late 16th century. It is perfect for both garden displays and floral arrangements. It ranks first in the world for the trade of bulbous flowers and eighth for the production of cut flowers. This study was carried out to assess the high-yielding gladiolus variety in Wayanad conditions. To determine the growth and yield character of four commercial varieties of Gladiolus viz., Arka Amar, Arka Ayush, Arka Kesar, and Arka Tilak was planted in open fields under ecological conditions of Wayanad. These varieties were compared for their plant height, spike length, number of florets, floret diameter, and yield. As the result of the study, the data reveals that the maximum plant height was recorded in Arka Kesar (134 cm) followed by Arka Amar (126 cm). Spike length was recorded highest at (114.66 cm) in Arka Kesar followed by (112.33cm) in Arka Amar. Floret diameter was recorded highest in Arka Tilak (11.47 cm) and lowest was recorded in Arka Ayush (8.43 cm). The number of florets was observed maximum in Arka Kesar (20.10) followed by Arka Amar (18.30). The number of spikes/hectare was recorded maximum in Arka Kesar (2.40 lakhs) followed by Arka Amar (2.25 lakhs).

Abstract:
Introduction: Since antiquity the contest of strength between Shaivism and Bhaktism has been in fashion. If the propounder of Shaivism owe their allegiance to Lord Shiva, the adherents of Bhaktism have a soft spot for Lord Vishnu. The former is hailed as the God of Destroyer (of maya), the latter of the universal householder or the Preserver. The emblematic indications of these two sects are vividly pronounced and detailed. The former smears tilak(a distinctive spot of coloured powder or paste smeared on the forehead by both gender as an emblem to the allegiance that they owe to) called as Tripundra is three liners(indications of the triguna:satvika, tamasika and rajasika) on their forehead horizontally; while the latter smears Vishnu-Tilak called as Urdhvapundra or upward-U shaped feet of Lord Vishnu that the devotees smear on their forehead, indicating that the devo- tee looks upward for possible upliftment from material world to spiritual world and finally, to liberation or moksha. Interestingly, if ’Hari’ is the other name of Lord Vishnu that the devotees utter;’HaraHara Mahadev’(That Mahadeva or the God of Devtas reside in everyone, har)is the slogan that the devotees of Shiva scream out.1 [Mubeen and ShahMubeen and Shah]

Abstract:
AbstractThis article studies the extraordinarily broad advocacy of military enlistment by India's political and intellectual elites during the First World War. Though often interpreted as politically motivated, it shows above all a preoccupation with the enlivening effects of military experience—in particular its development of courage and manliness. In this it followed an established pattern of Indian elite concern with martiality. It also reflected anxieties of Indian weakness and effeminacy—something elites indicted themselves for, but which, importantly, they assumed to be more generally prevalent. Sampling calls for enlistment in the public space throughout the war, the article focuses on Bombay Presidency—a region that gave rise to such prominent Indian voices for enlistment as M. K. Gandhi, B. G. Tilak, and M. A. Jinnah. Bombay's recent experience of relative exclusion from military recruitment, and from membership of the ‘martial races’, was representative of much of India. This article enables us to view the effects of such ‘demartialization’ away from the classic case of Bengal. It suggests that it helped to inspire the call to enlist, especially as public spokesmen for the ‘martial race’ ideology explicitly linked martiality with manliness. The concern for enlistment ultimately superseded political calculation even for so hard-nosed a politician as Tilak. And though elites were most obviously concerned for their own martial vigour and leadership, they were also concerned with the manliness of the bulk of India's population, especially in Gandhi's conception of war as a preparation forsatyagraha.
