Abstract:
Masculinization and feminization of the Jitralada strain of <i>Oreochromis niloticus</i> (L.) could be induced with a high level of success by oral administration of a 40-mg kg-1 of 17-α-methyltestosterone and 40-mg mg^-1 of ethynyl-estradiol, respectively, to the first-feeding fry for a period of 21 days. On the other hand, optimization of dosage and means of application of 17-β-oestradiol or <i>Pueraria mirifica</i> roots are still needed in inducing reliable feminization of this strain. Differences in the results obtained are discussed and it is concluded that there are significa

With the increasing global demand for fish products, aquaculture has become one of the main alternatives for the protein supply for human consumption. On the other hand, the intensification of aquaculture production results in an increase of negative impacts on the environment, making necessary the development of new farming technologies that will minimize environmental impacts. Tilapia- en koi vingerlinge was teen dieselfde lading (250/hok) in elke produksiestelsel ge

Nakambala Tilapia Farm commenced operations at the Nakambala Estate of the Zambia Sugar Company near Mazabuka, Zambia in early 1982. The farm used an intensive tank system designed to produce 50 tonnes of tilaplas per annum to provide fish for feeding the labour force on the sugar estate. The project had to manufacture fish feeds on site. A wide range of feed raw materials were used over the course of the project, with formulations designed to aim to supply the nutrient levels suggested by the University of St iIng, Institute of Aquaculture. The raw materials included microalgae from a pilot s

Abstract:
Lack of affordable feeds is one of the major constraints facing small-scale fish farmers in Tanzania. This study evaluated the suitability of moringa leaf meal (MLM), cassava leaf meal (CLM) and cassava root meal (CRM) as novel ingredients in Nile tilapia, Oreochromis niloticus diets. Each of the ingredients was processed in an attempt to remove the most significant antinutritional factor. A series of five experiments was conducted in a recirculation system using juvenile O. niloticus. The fish were fed isonitrogenous (30g 100g-1), isolipidic (10g 100g-1) and isoenergetic (18 kJ g-1) diets con

Thesis (MPhil)--University of Stellenbosch, 2004.<br>ENGLISH ABSTRACT: Tilapia is presumed to have a well-defined genetic mechanism of sex determination, but not all sex ratios are compatible with a monofactorial sex determination model. A theory of autosomal gene influence, as well as temperature sex determination (TSD) has been proposed in order to explain large variations in sex ratios. This study assessed the variation in progeny sex ratio in O. mossambicus as a basis for the application of YY male technology in the production of all-male progeny groups. Three populations of O. mossa
