Abstract:
The effect of major parameters, such as pouring temperature, tilt time and preheating temperature of mold, on the tilt casting of aluminum alloy automobile drain pipes is studied through numerical simulation using single factor and orthogonal test methods. The simulation results of single factor test indicate that the increase in the pouring temperature and mold preheating temperature could effectively reduce the shrinkage tendency and the shortage of tilt time would cause lower temperature gradient of casting at the beginning of solidification, thus would lead the extension of solidification

Precipitation of ZrCu with the B2 structure in Zr50Cu50–xAlx (x = 0, 4, 6) metallic glasses by rapidly heating and cooling was investigated. By rapidly heating and cooling, the ZrCu B2 phase precipitates the most in Zr50Cu46Al4 metallic glass plates prepared by tilt-casting without using a silica nozzle. The amount of the ZrCu B2 phase precipitated in Zr50Cu46Al4 metallic glass ribbons prepared by using a silica nozzle decreases by Si diffused from the silica nozzle during the preparation. This paper concerns automation of pouring process in casting industry. Recently, automatic pouring machines are used in casting with greensand mold. There are various types of automatic pouring machines such as a ladle-tilt type, stopper type, pressure type and so on. In this paper, we focus on the automation technology to the ladle-tilt type automatic pouring machines which have been widely used in East Asian. The pouring process requires the molten metal is poured quickly and precisely into the mold and is not spilled over the sprue cup. Therefore, the precision of pouring control in current

The application of titanium components is generally limited by their high raw material and manufacturing costs. In this paper, a lower cost cast titanium alloy based on the Ti-Al-Fe system has been designed using an ICME approach. The new alloy Ti-6Al-5Fe-0.05B-0.05C (all wt.%) significantly reduces raw material cost and demonstrates improved castability compared with the baseline Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The fine primary and secondary α phase microstructure in the new alloy, due to Fe partitioning, provides exceptionally high strength (1023 MPa yield strength and 1136 MPa ultimate tensile strength) a

This research has investigated the modelling and optimisation of the tilt casting process of Titanium Aluminides (TiAl). This study is carried out in parallel with the experimental research undertaken in IRC at the University of Birmingham. They propose to use tilt casting inside a vacuum chamber and attempt to combine this tilt casting process with Induction Skull Melting (ISM). A totally novel process is developing for investment casting, which is suitable for casting gamma TiAl. As it is known, gamma TiAl alloys has great properties including low density, high specific yield strength, high

Hardening distortions are unwanted changes in shape and dimension that arise during hardening of steel components. Uncontrolled distortions induce random errors to the manufacturing process, and have a strong negative impact on manufacturing costs. The distortions are not only caused by the hardening process, several factors from previous manufacturing steps including the component geometry itself contribute to varying extent. The aim of the current work is to investigate the main influencing factors on hardening distortions for serial produced gears. The investigations were done on two differ

The limits of gas turbine technology are heavily influenced by materials and manufacturing capabilities. Inconel alloys remain the material of choice for most hot gas path components in gas turbines, however recent increases in turbine inlet temperature (TIT) are associated with the development of advanced convective cooling methods and ceramic thermal barrier coatings (TBC). Increasing cycle efficiency and cycle specific work are the primary drivers for increasing TIT. Lately, incremental performance gains responsible for increasing the allowable TIT have been made mainly through innovations
