Abstract:
Tim Burtons films have left an indelible mark on the world of cinema, renowned for their distinctive and influential qualities. This paper takes a closer look at Tim Burtons Gothic aesthetic and its revitalization in his work, with a specific focus on Alice in Wonderland. By dissecting the films use of color, narrative techniques, and innovative technology, this analysis aims to delve into the depths of Tim Burtons cinematic style. It becomes evident that Tim Burton draws deep inspiration from the Gothic style but applies a creative twist, particularly through the strategic use of red and blue to intensify visual impact. Moreover, Burton weaves a feminist perspective into the narrative fabric. The incorporation of 3D technology elevates the immersive experience, firmly cementing Tim Burtons distinct cinematic legacy. Alice in Wonderland stands as a testament to his ability to infuse classic elements with his unique style.

Abstract:
Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
It is difficult to predict the development of Tim Burton's career now that his original protagonist, the eccentric creative mourning the loss of his father, is dead – or rather, now that the child element of the protagonist is gone. To find a way out of his ideological crisis, Burton has been trying different directions, including a female protagonist and reviving an old character that belongs to the times when Burton's heroes were still ‘children’ as well as ‘monsters’.

Abstract:
This doctoral thesis studies the characteristics of Tim Burton's cinema. It relates his work to his life, examines his situation into the contemporary Hollywood industry and considers the constant elements that form his visual poetic. It studies the question and contradictions of film genres and the Theories of Authorship. It examines the characteristics of Postmodern culture and the particular intertextual practice in Burton's films. It contemplates the fantastic phenomenon, that is best regarded as an artistic mode from which a number of related genres emerge. It considers Tim Burton's cinema to be the heir of what is denominated the Gothic-expressionist Tradition, a movement whose spirit, aesthetics and vital position are in opposition to the rational attitude of Classicism. It discusses the way Tim Burton creates the fantastic space through a careful stage design and the music composed by Danny Elfman. The films Edward Scissorhands and The Nightmare Before Christmas are analysed in depth in order to prove that Burton's emotive storylines, and the complexity and entity of his themes and characters, shift his films away from being mere exercises in style.

Referential, reflexive, metaphorical – these are a few recurrent terms and concepts used to describe the films of Tim Burton, which attest to the links between this corpus and the history of his art and his era. Based on this observation, the present hypothesis argues that Burton’s filmography is a cinema of re imagination. The filmmaker himself uses this term to describe the conceptual approach to his films. This dissertation explains the choice of re imagination in regard to other pre existing concepts before analyzing the implications of re imagination in Tim Burton's filmography. His films are designed like toy chests in which memories, imagination, and intact pieces are collected. These elements establish the formal base of Tim Burton's re imaginings. They come together to form a single image by means an often tenuous narrative thread. By adopting cinematographic and filmic processes which look back to prior eras of the seventh art, and by bringing stories into the domain of the imagination through the intermediary of mental manifestations, Tim Burton builds a cinema that is anchored in the past, all while trying to restore the kingdom of childhood with what is left behind

Abstract:

This research conducts a narratological study of Tim Burton’s films in the light of the narrative theory of Vladimir Propp. It is to analyze in the oeuvre of Burton, analogous procedures to those of the wonderful tale such as described by Propp. It also pays attention to the matters that interconnect the Proppian wonderful world to the fantastic burthonian world. It seeks to understand how a reinterpretation in the cinematographic context of Tim Burton films create a connection with the morphological structure of the wonderful of V. Propp. The conducted literature reviews involve authoritative works on the fantastic cinema, the animation cinema in general and particularly the cinema of Tim Burton. The corpus of the research is composed by the Corpse Bride – 2005 of Tim Burton; The establishment of the corpus was based on the criterion of selection of the animation films that stand out in the oeuvre of Tim Burton. Methodologically, the research is bibliographical and comparative. The main theoretical reference is Propp's own narratological theory, which always seeks the wonderful in his works. This research also takes into consideration the masterful model work of Haroldo de Campos, Morphology of Macunaíma, which presents and reinterprets the proppian model. The relevance of this study lies in the fact that little research has been made on hybrid wonderful tale to the animation cinema. It is also proposing a new unfolding of the proppian semiology, turning it this time to the universe of visual discourse and digital manipulation
Metodologicamente, a pesquisa é bibliográfica e comparativa.

Abstract:
Tim Burton is a North-American cineaste known by the movies Beetlejuice (1988), The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993), and Edward Scissorhands (1990). In 1997, Burton published his first literary work called The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories, a work which presents 23 poems illustrated by the author. Tim Burton’s cinematographic and literary works present some particular characteristics that exemplify the presence of a signature, which is meanly delineated by gothic elements, grotesque characteristics, and transtextual relationships. In this sense, this master’s research analyses the gothic and grotesque characteristics in the films Vincent (1982), Frankenweenie (1982), and Corpse Bride (2005); as well as in the book The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories (1997).
A presente dissertação discute o gótico e o grotesco em Tim Burton, analisando os curtas-metragens Vincent (1982), Frankenweenie (1982), o longametragem Corpse Bride (2005) e o livro The Melancholy Death of Oyster Boy and Other Stories (1997).

Abstract:

Abstract:
Two approximate solutions for optimal control of switched systems with autonomous subsystems and continuous-time dynamics are developed. The proposed solutions consist of online training algorithms with recursive least squares training laws. The first solution is the classic policy iteration algorithm which imposes heavy computational burden (full back-up). In order to relax the computational burden in the policy iteration algorithm, the second algorithm is presented. The convergence of the proposed algorithms to the optimal solution in online training is investigated. Simulation results are presented to illustrate the effectiveness of the discussed algorithms.

Abstract:
Background: Dysphagia is prevalent in Alzheimer’s disease (AD) and can influence caregivers’ burden. Objectives: Evaluate the impact of feeding process in caregivers’ burden of individuals with AD. Methods: This is a cross-sectional study. Caregivers of individuals with AD who attended the dementia outpatient clinic and are over 18 years of age were included. We collected demographic variables and the Zarit Burden Interview - Short Version (ranging from 0 to 48) and The Edinburgh Feeding Evaluation in Dementia Scale (scoring from 0 to 20) scales. Relationship between the two scales and demographic variables were sought. Results: 38 caregivers were included, with a mean age of 55.2 (± 4) years, 68.4% female, 76.3% spouses and with an average time as a caregiver of 4.6 (± 3.1) years, the same average of the patients’ disease time. 71% caregivers do not report changes in the patient’s diet and 92.1% were never instructed about the feeding process during the course of the disease. The aspects “the patient requires close supervision while feeding” (p=0.024) and “there is spillage while feeding” (p=0.004) were correlated and showed an impact on the level of burden. Conclusion: Despite the short period of illness and no dietary changes, tasks related to food impact the burden of the caregivers.

Abstract:

Since the successful translation of many constraints into an aesthetically appealing as well as reliable, functional and cost-effective structure is primarily a question of sound conceptual design, the importance of this step in the design process as a whole cannot be overstated. Nonetheless, the growing complexity of analysis and verification methods, materials technology and construction procedures is driving ever greater specialisation against a backdrop of increasingly extensive and opaque standardisation and control systems. Such specialisation comes at the expense of conceptual design training in engineering schools and consequently of structural engineers’ creativity and other skills necessary to create compelling designs for structures. The rules for ensuring robustness reflect the increasing complexity and opacity characterising structural design codes. While the practical importance of designing and building robust structures is universally acknowledged, the codes presently in place are often vague or confusing. Cross-referencing, in turn, may lead to loops around rules that, confounding engineers, are counterproductive. At the same time, however, that lack of clarity may afford opportunities for innovative solutions by building items that ensure robustness into the conceptual design of a structure. This paper proposes an operational design process that deals appropriately with all factors of structural performance, including robustness, without compromising bridge economy or elegance. That process, which combines several robustness strategies, including risk- based considerations, is illustrated with a case study.

Abstract:
Poorer countries have a much smaller public sector and correspondingly a smaller tax burden than richer countries, yet, their economic performance has not been necessarily better. Using a simple model, this paper suggests that the growth and welfare effects of taxation are mediated through institutional quality; consequently, optimal tax levels increase with improved institutional quality. The paper then employs firm-level perceptions on the quality of public services and on the tax burden to test some of the model¿s predictions. Consistent with these predictions, the paper finds that a higher level of institutional quality bolsters positive perceptions of the quality of public services while at the same time moderating the view of taxes as an obstacle to growth.

Márquez, Gustavo. An Assessment of Pension System Reform in Uruguay in 1995. Inter-American Development Bank, June 1997. http://dx.doi.org/10.18235/0009078.

Full text
Abstract:
In 1995, the government of Uruguay undertook a first pillar-based reform of the pension system, as opposed to the second pillar-based Chilean-style reform. The paper's first section describes Uruguay's pension system prior to reform. It demonstrates quite clearly that the crisis faced by that system is the result of both its design and its functioning. Moreover, it shows that over time it created an increasingly unsustainable fiscal burden. The second section presents the reform enacted in September 1995, describing its institutional layout. The third section is dedicated to a forecast of the financial consequences of reform, contrasting it with a no-reform scenario. The simulation exercise shows that reform eases the fiscal burden but that it remains high enough to require substantial fiscal contributions. Finally, the last section outlines the author's conclusions.

Abstract:
Performance of current NOx sensors is problematic, in particular drift and cross-sensitivity to other species. Many lean burn engines are operated based on earlier calibrations. Operators must allow for drift and use large margins to meet emissions. Laser sensors (based on absorption at target wavelengths) are self-calibrating and immune to interferences. In particular, recently developed Quantum Cascade Lasers (QCLs) allow measurements at mid-infrared (MIR) wavelengths thereby allowing stronger signals, better schemes to mitigate interferences, and fast time response. This project evaluated a commercial QCL-based NOx (NO, NO2) and CO sensor for use in gas engine applications. The project also developed and performed bench top testing of a custom sensor which uses a pitch and catch design.
