This second installment of TDR's continuing series on choreography and philosophy addresses dance and temporality. Paula Caspão describes the economy of movement and language as a stuttering, relational, affective field. Frédéric Pouillaude argues that contemporaneity links dance and scène, which in French means both an abstract place for an event and, more concretely, the stage. In a dialogue, Danielle Goldman and Deborah Hay follow up on Goldman's considerations of how improvisation offers “escape routes”—for and from dance, theory, and time.

Lucas's discussion of contemporaneity makes an important contribution to archaeological understandings of chronology and dating and to broader debates about temporality. Extending his earlier work on time (Buchli and Lucas 2001; Lucas 2001; 2005), Lucas's central insight is that contemporaneity is not a function of a shared unit of time but of the specific relations through which objects are imbricated. The approach is likely to have profound implications for archaeological approaches to chronology. Whether or not it undermines the current preoccupation with absolute dating, it should certainl

While Dewar's treatment is an important contribution, drawbacks to his method are identified and remedies proposed. First, an equation that obviates the need for the simulation is provided. Concerning the constructive character of historiography, the chapter discusses alternative models of historiography taken from other disciplines (especially literary theory) as they relate to dance and ultimately lay the foundation of a nonvectori

Clearly these newer methods allow for significant interpretive outcomes in a way that older historical critical practice could not. This introductory chapter provides an overview of the relationship between the Asian American and the American South. The figure of the Asian American is perceived to be discrepant in and antithetical to the American South. Within the American imaginary, the Asian American as perpetual foreigner and alien is always seen as a recent immigrant, and therefore associated with contemporary times, while the South is perceived as an anachronistic and isolated region. This renders the two—the Asian American and the South—allegedly mutually exclusive and incongruous. In these imaginings, the South rema

Abstract:
This chapter aims at a Bakhtinian account that does justice to the insight of Ian Watt that a new form emerged in eighteenth-century fiction, reflected in the term “novel”. However, this development was hardly unprecedented: novelistic fiction had already appeared at least twice, in Renaissance Spain and the Roman empire. Various eighteenth-century English novels are canonical examples of the genre, but their genealogy can be traced back to antiquity, illuminating what distinguishes novelistic discourse and what is or is not modern about it. Ancient examples of novelistic fiction (e.g., Apuleius and Petronius) can be generically distinguished from Greek romance. Novelistic fiction has been invented more than once, and its earliest examples provide interesting precedents for what have been considered among the modern novel’s distinguishing features—such as contemporaneity and certain kinds of realism.

Abstract:
This paper addresses the question of Woolf’s reception in France through a typology of its three aspects and features: contemporaneity, idolisation, iconisation. First, ‘contemporaneity’ refers not only to a historical coincidence between two writers or thinkers living at the same period of time but also to a form shared sensibility that can disrupt the chronology. Thus, Nathalie Sarraute considered Virginia Woolf her contemporary and came to transform her into a writer of the sixties. Second, ‘idolisation’ coincides mainly with the feminist reception of Virginia Woolf in the seventies-eighties when, in some French writers’ works, admiration became adoration, fascination, and even sanctification. This section of the chapter focuses on the examples of Anne Bragance’s La Dame sur le piédestal and Cecile Wajsbrot’s Une vie à soi in particular. Finally, the third type of reception converts Virginia Woolf into an icon (“iconisation”): she is no more a goddess in this process, but a trace in our collective memory. Anne-James Chaton’s biofiction, Elle regarde passer les gens, exemplifies particularly what is called here iconisation.

Abstract:
This chapter considers an issue that has garnered sustained attention by States and international courts and tribunals in recent years — the potential to allow (or deny) evolutionary interpretations to treaty terms. It highlights five conclusions about the interpretation of treaties over time. First, evolutionary interpretations are made based on an array of means of ordinary interpretation, as enshrined in Vienna Convention on the Law of the Treaties Articles 31–33 and customary international law. Second, evolutionary interpretation is an issue of fact and law arising in the circumstances of particular cases. Third, the main principle is that of ‘contemporaneous interpretation’, a term referring not to the interpreter but to the parties (i.e. contemporaneous to the time of conclusion of the treaty). Fourth, it makes no sense to apply the principle of contemporaneity in all circumstances, since there are some terms used in treaties that make legal sense only when understood to evolve over time. Finally, to keep the unity of the treaty and its terms, the new interpretation is retrospective, having effect back to the time of the treaty’s conclusion.
