Abstract:
Time is in control of our everyday life and work life. Time is a valuable resource of which everyone possesses the same amount. In work life, time is important; it rules the workday and the tasks that are being performed. Time is even more significant within the consultancy industry, where worked time and competence is what is being delivered to the customers. Since time is of great importance for consulting firms, time management systems and time reporting become a crucial part of a consultant’s day. IT consulting firms spend lots of time and money on business systems, despite this the area of how time management and performance management are connected is relatively unexplored. This report aims to contribute to an enhanced understanding regarding why consultancy firms work with time management, and how data from time management systems could be used. The study will also investigate how the employees could be motivated to use the time management system in the extent that the managers wish, as well as important requirements on data from the time management system. These questions can together give answer to how time management can be aligned with performance management within an IT consultancy firm. The report is based on 14 interviews performed at five different IT consulting firms in the Stockholm area, a participant observation conducted at one of the participating companies, as well as a literature review. The study was performed during the spring of 2013. The study found that the main reason for IT consultant firms to report time is to gain decision support for invoices and salary payments. Being able to see overtime and flextime is something that is appreciated by the employees. Other identified areas of usage are forecasts and estimates, evaluations and follow-ups, utilization rate calculations, and employee care. Regular follow-ups, preferable weekly, are necessary for motivating the employees to work with time management. It is also important that the time management system is easy to use in order for it to generate relevant decision support. The study shows that to implement a successful time management strategy, the following aspects should be considered: (i) to not measure too much, (ii) to have clear communication and weekly deadlines, (iii) to make it simple, (iv) to create awareness among the employees, and (v) to have a time management system that mutually benefits the managers and the employees.

Abstract:

Abstract:
Logical time management is used to synchronize the executions of distributed simulation elements. In existing time management systems, such as High Level Architecture (HLA), logical times of the simulation elements are synchronized. However, in some cases synchronization can unnecessarily decrease the performance of the system. In the proposed HLA based time management mechanism, federates are clustered into logically related groups. The relevance of federates is taken to be a function of proximity which is defined as the distance between them in the virtual space. Thus, each federate cluster is composed of relatively close federates according to calculated distances. When federate clusters are sufficiently far from each other, there is no need to synchronize them, as they do not relate each other. So in PATiM mechanism, inter-cluster logical times are not synchronized when clusters are sufficiently distant. However, if the distant federate clusters get close to each other, they will need to resynchronize their logical times. This temporal partitioning is aimed at reducing network traffic and time management calculations and also increasing the concurrency between federates. The results obtained based on case applications have verified that clustering improves local performance as soon as federates become unrelated.

Abstract:
Every day large volumes of data are collected in the form of time series. Time series are collections of events or observations, predominantly numeric in nature, sequentially recorded on a regular or irregular time basis. Time series are becoming increasingly important in nearly every organisation and industry, including banking, finance, telecommunication, and transportation. Banking institutions, for instance, rely on the analysis of time series for forecasting economic indices, elaborating financial market models, and registering international trade operations. More and more time series are being used in this type of investigation and becoming a valuable resource in todays organisations. This thesis investigates and proposes solutions to some current and important issues in time series data management (TSDM), using Design Science Research Methodology. The thesis presents new models for mapping time series data to relational databases which optimise the use of disk space, can handle different time granularities, status attributes, and facilitate time series data manipulation in a commercial Relational Database Management System (RDBMS). These new models provide a good solution for current time series database applications with RDBMS and are tested with a case study and prototype with financial time series information. Also included is a temporal data model for illustrating time series data lifetime behaviour based on a new set of time dimensions (confidentiality, definitiveness, validity, and maturity times) specially targeted to manage time series data which are introduced to correctly represent the different status of time series data in a timeline. The proposed temporal data model gives a clear and accurate picture of the time series data lifecycle. Formal definitions of these time series dimensions are also presented. In addition, a time series grouping mechanism in an extensible commercial relational database system is defined, illustrated, and justified. The extension consists of a new data type and its corresponding rich set of routines that support modelling and operating time series information within a higher level of abstraction. It extends the capability of the database server to organise and manipulate time series into groups. Thus, this thesis presents a new data type that is referred to as GroupTimeSeries, and its corresponding architecture and support functions and operations. Implementation options for the GroupTimeSeries data type in relational based technologies are also presented. Finally, a framework for TSDM with enough expressiveness of the main requirements of time series application and the management of that data is defined. The framework aims at providing initial domain know-how and requirements of time series data management, avoiding the impracticability of designing a TSDM system on paper from scratch. Many aspects of time series applications including the way time series data are organised at the conceptual level are addressed. The central abstraction for the proposed domain specific framework is the notions of business sections, group of time series, and time series itself. The framework integrates comprehensive specification regarding structural and functional aspects for time series data management. A formal framework specification using conceptual graphs is also explored.

Abstract:
The main goal of this thesis is to investigate the time situation of a particular entrepreneur in individual time stages of his enterprise. At the beginning the topic of time management and other relevant issues are mentioned. These issues were picked in order to help develop one's organization skills. The Theoretical Part introduces the topic of time management and shows tools which can be utilized to boost one's efficiency. Other topics like goal setting, prioritization, stress management and leadership are further discussed in this thesis. Deep quantitative interview with the entrepreneur was chosen to be the main research method. This data is accompanied by the provided documents, information from the company's website and further information the entrepreneur has shared about the company. The results of this case study are compared with the theoretical and practical information in this thesis. This study finds the entrepreneur to be a good example of dealing with time management. The entrepreneur's attitude towards modern technology is also much appreciated as are some of his core principles and values (for ex. not postponing problems). Setting goals and priorities in written form can be mentioned as a recommendation for the entrepreneur. Right kind of delegation on reliable people may also improve the situation (this is already slowly occurring in the firm).

Hela studien genomfördes under våren 2013.

Murali, Sriram. "Response-time analysis and overload management in real-time systems." Thesis, University of British Columbia, 2012. http://hdl.handle.net/2429/40839.

Full text
Abstract:
We provide two approaches to handling overload in shared resources offering realtime guarantees. We first provide a technique (based on mathematical optimization) for identifying the possible causes for an overload situation by computing the worst-case demand of the system, depending upon the amount of requests serviced. Worst-case analysis of response time has a pseudo-polynomial time complexity, and when there is no knowledge about the workload, the complexity further increases. We provide polynomial-time heuristics to reduce the computation time of the algorithm. Further, we evaluate it against other techniques using stochastic analysis to stress on the accuracy and ease of estimation of the result. The scheduling policy based on the approach is useful to detect an overload in the resource and to allow us to make responsible decisions on it. Secondly, we present a scheduling policy (obtained through stochastic approximation) to handle overload in real-time systems. Competitive analysis of online algorithms has commonly been applied to understand the behavior of real-time systems during overload conditions. While competitive analysis provides insight into the behavior of certain algorithms, it is hard to make inferences about the performance of those algorithms in practice. Similar on-line scheduling approaches tend to function differently in practice due to factors. Further, most work on handling overload in real-time systems does not consider using information regarding the distribution of arrival rates of jobs and execution times to make scheduling decisions. With some information about the workload, we aim to improve the revenue earned by the service provider, in a scenario when each successful job completion results in revenue accrual. We prove that the policy we outline does lead to increased revenue when compared to a class of scheduling policies that make static resource allocations to different service classes. We also use empirical evidence to underscore the fact that this policy performs better than a variety of other scheduling policies. The ideas presented can be applied to several soft real-time systems, specifically systems with multiple service classes.

Abstract:
In 2009 the Federal Highway Administration published a report regarding a Focus States Initiative that had been conducted with 11 states to discuss the development of national Traffic Incident Management (TIM) standards. Performance measures were defined, and a national TIM dashboard created, but very little data has been added to the dashboard since. In this research study, performance measures of the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) TIM program were analyzed. Data availability was first assessed to determine whether these performance measures could be calculated. It was determined that crash response data available from the Utah Highway Patrol (UHP) could be used to calculate the performance measures of Incident Management Teams (IMT) and UHP units; however, roadway clearance data were missing. UHP personnel agreed to collect additional data regarding crash roadway clearance for six months of the study. Performance measures of response time (RT), roadway clearance time (RCT), and incident clearance time (ICT) were calculated for responding units at 168 crashes. Using the crash response data from UHP and traffic speed, travel time, and volume data from UDOT databases, 83 of the 163 crashes that met additional criteria were evaluated to determine the volume of traffic affected (AV) by each incident and the associated user cost (EUC). Statistical analyses to determine relationships between different measures such as RT, RCT, ICT, AV, and EUC were conducted to assist UDOT in optimizing the allocation of their IMT resources.

Abstract:

Abstract:
The primary purpose of this thesis is to explore what issues may arise during development of a framework for handling and display of streamed real-time data. In addition to this, it also investigates how the display of different types of data, along with a change of execution platform, impacts execution time. Through the undertaking of two case studies, each split into developmental and an experimental phases, the thesis goes through the development of such a real-time data handling framework. The framework was developed in both stationary and mobile forms, and the developmental issues encountered along each of these paths are highlighted. Afterwards, the results gathered from performance tests run on each framework version were compared, in order to ascertain whether the handling and display of different data types, along with a change in execution platform, had had an impact upon the frameworks execution time. The results from the developmental observations revealed that the most commonly encountered issues were those relating to program latency, commonly due to sub-optimal program architecture along with connectivity issues encountered during data streaming. The second most encountered issue regarded the choice of an appropriate display method, in order to communicate changes in the displayed data along with correlation between several tracked data points. The results from the experimental comparisons revealed that while the impact on execution time caused by the use of calculated data, as opposed to raw data values, was marginal at most, a change of execution platform impacted said time drastically. By porting the framework to the mobile platform, the different processes whose execution time were measured during the tests experienced an increase in execution time ranging from 2405% all the way to 15860%. The authors recommend that the framework be developed towards gaining the ability to connect to any given relational database, and to handle and display the data therein, in order for it to have application areas other than as a test instrument. Further, the authors also recommend that additional tests be run on the framework using a wider variety of stationary and mobile devices, in order to determine whether the conclusions drawn from the results in the thesis hold up in the face of greater hardware variety.

Abstract:
This thesis researches Scania's challenge to display the position oftrucks, with high accuracy and good user experience while with minimalposition transfers from the truck. This thesis presents an eventtriggered position update (ETPU) algorithm for sending positions fromthe truck along with real time estimation on the client. The key pointwith this system is that the truck computes the same estimation toevaluate its accuracy and sends a new position if the estimate isinsufficient. This achieves a system in which position updates areonly done when needed to achieve a selected accuracy. Simulations weredone and metrics for: accuracy, data consumption and user experiencewere applied for evaluation. Results are presented to inform thereaders of the ETPU's potential.

Full text
Abstract:
In this thesis, two problems of time consistent mean-variance portfolio selection have been studied: mean-variance asset-liability management with regime switchings and mean-variance optimization with state-dependent risk aversion under short-selling prohibition. Due to the non-linear expectation term in the mean-variance utility, the usual Tower Property fails to hold, and the corresponding optimal portfolio selection problem becomes time-inconsistent in the sense that it does not admit the Bellman Optimality Principle. Because of this, in this thesis, time-consistent equilibrium solution of two mean-variance optimization problems is established via a game theoretic approach. In the first part of this thesis, the time consistent solution of the mean-variance asset-liability management is sought for. By using the extended Hamilton-Jacobi- Bellman equation for equilibrium solution, equilibrium feedback control of this MVALM and the corresponding equilibrium value function can be obtained. The equilibrium control is found to be affine in liability. Hence, the time consistent equilibrium control of this problem is state dependent in the sense that it depends on the uncontrollable liability process, which is in substantial contrast with the time consistent solution of the simple classical mean-variance problem in Björk and Murgoci (2010), in which it was independent of the state. In the second part of this thesis, the time consistent equilibrium strategies for the mean-variance portfolio selection with state dependent risk aversion under short-selling prohibition is studied in both a discrete and a continuous time set- tings. The motivation that urges us to study this problem is the recent work in Björk et al. (2012) that considered the mean-variance problem with state dependent risk aversion in the sense that the risk aversion is inversely proportional to the current wealth. There is no short-selling restriction in their problem and the corresponding time consistent control was shown to be linear in wealth. However, we discovered that the counterpart of their continuous time equilibrium control in the discrete time framework behaves unsatisfactory, in the sense that the corresponding “optimal” wealth process can take negative values. This negativity in wealth will change the investor into a risk seeker which results in an unbounded value function that is economically unsound. Therefore, the discretized version of the problem in Bjork et al. (2012) might yield solutions with bankruptcy possibility. Furthermore, such “bankruptcy” solution can converge to the solution in continuous counterpart as Björk et al. (2012). This means that the negative risk aversion drawback could appear in implementing the solution in Björk et al. (2012) discretely in practice. This drawback urges us to prohibit short-selling in order to eliminate the chance of getting non-positive wealth. Using backward induction, the equilibrium control in discrete time setting is explicit solvable and is shown to be linear in wealth. An application of the extended Hamilton-Jacobi-Bellman equation leads us to conclude that the continuous time equilibrium control is also linear in wealth. Also, the investment to wealth ratio would satisfy an integral equation which is uniquely solvable. The discrete time equilibrium controls are shown to converge to that in continuous time setting.

Abstract:
A major characteristic of aircraft evolution is the rapid growth in the electrical and electronic content of each subsequenat ircraft generation.T he dominant technology used in an aircraft electrical power distribution network to switch power and to protect the aircraft wiring from hazardous electrical faults is the electro-mechanical relay switch and the electro-thermal circuit breaker. Despite the maturity of these devices they do however suffer from a number of problems relating to reliability, accuracy, and limited operational lifetime. The design, fabrication and testing of a novel Solid State Power Controller (SSPC) is described. The design uses power MOSFET's to provide both the power switching operation of a relay, and the power interruption capability of a circuit breaker. The majority of the control functions required by this device are performed digitally by virtue of a real time program executed on an embedded microcontroller. A number of methods are derived for characterising existing I2t wire protection trip response curves. Reproduction of a true 1 2t trip response in real time using iterative computational methods is described. An examination of the semiconductor thermal characteristics was undertaken. The methods adopted for extracting the power semiconductor thermal response involved direct measurement using infrared thermal imaging techniques and simulation using a computer based modelling tool. Knowledge of the semiconductor die temperature is of vital importance in the context of the overall protection strategy. A finite difference calculation performed in real time has been demonstrated as a viable method to predict the operational temperature of the MOSFET power switching devices used in the design

Abstract:
Demand for Data Transfer between computers has increased ever since the introduction of Personal Computers (PC). Data Communicating on the Personal Computer is much more productive as it is an intelligent terminal that can connect to various hosts on the same I/O hardware circuit as well as execute processes on its own as an isolated system. Yet, the PC on its own is useless for data communication. It requires a hardware interface circuit and software for controlling the handshaking signals and setting up communication parameters. Often the data is distorted due to noise in the line. Such transmission errors are imbedded in the data and require careful filtering. The thesis deals with the development of a Data Acquisition system that collects real time load and weather data and stores them as historical database for use in a load forecast algorithm in a load management system. A filtering technique has been developed here that checks for transmission errors in the raw data. The microcomputers used in this development are the IBM PC/XT and the AT&T 3B2 supermicro computer.

Abstract:
In 2018 the Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) funded a study in which data were collected to evaluate performance measures for UDOT's Incident Management Team (IMT) program. After that study was completed, UDOT received funding to expand the size of its IMT program. Additionally, TransSuite, a data source used by the UDOT Traffic Operations Center to log incident-related data, was reconfigured to provide a higher quantity of performance measure data. This study made use of the new data source, in addition to Computer Aided Dispatch logs provided by the Utah Highway Patrol that were used in the first study, to collect performance measure data of the expanded program and measure the impacts of the IMT program expansion. Using these two datasets, a reanalyzed 2018 dataset and a new 2020 dataset, a comparison of performance measures was made. Performance measures studied included those defined as important by the Federal Highway Administration's Focus States Initiative in 2009, namely Roadway Clearance Time, Incident Clearance Time, and Response Time. These performance measures were calculated for IMT responders at 320 incidents in 2018 and 289 incidents in 2020. In addition, data regarding the affected volume associated with incidents, the excess travel time accumulated due to incidents, and the excess user cost associated with incident congestion were gathered. In 2018, 188 incidents were analyzed for these user impacts, and in 2020 144 incidents were analyzed. Statistical analyses were conducted to compare IMT performance between the two years and to determine relationships between performance measures and user impacts. The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic affected traffic volumes during this study, and statistical analyses were adjusted to account for volume differences between the two years. Results indicated that the expansion of the IMT program has allowed UDOT to respond faster to incidents, and respond to a larger quantity of incidents over a larger coverage area and in extended operating hours. Performance of the expanded IMT program has had significant effects in reducing incident-related congestion and its costs.

Abstract:
In today’s competitive automotive market, many of the world’s leading organizations utilize the Lean manufacturing philosophy in order to increase productivity and stay competitive. With this philosophy come many great methods for improving processes, where focus is put on reducing or eradicating any actions or process that fail to create value for customers, the so-called waste. However, one question that remains is how fast a process actually can be. Having “40% waste”, how can one know if this is the endpoint of a successful efficiency improvement journey, or if the waste can be reduced all the way down to 0%? This Master thesis seeks to identify where this endpoint is located for a specific design of the product, aiming to help organizations allocate improvement work to where it does the greatest impact. Hence, knowing if the endpoint for a process already is reached, organizations can steer improvement work to R&D departments instead of trying to improve something not capable of improving. The findings show that organizations can use the results from this study in more than just one context. Not only will it complement the Lean philosophy by providing a measure of the absolute shortest durations for each individual activity or process under ideal conditions, but also will it facilitate communication between R&D and assembly departments at an earlier stage of the development process by quantifying the impact of different design choices on the total assembly time.

Abstract:
This thesis describes the implementation of a Time Management Unit (TMU) in hardware as specified by Gregertsen and Skavhaug, the specification and implementation of several improvements to the proposed specification, and the creation of a software framework to enable use of the module in a convenient way. A set of thorough automatic functional tests are also described and provided. The performance of the module is assessed and discussed. A user description similar to the AVR32 UC3 datasheets is also created. The TMU has been implemented as a hardware module on the peripheral bus (APB) on the AVR32 UC3 microcontroller, which makes it easy to develop and test stand-alone, and simple to integrate into future UC3 microcontrollers. Also, as the APB interface of the AMBA standard is an open standard used by several System-on-a-chip (SoC) designs, the module can be implemented on other microcontrollers with very low effort. The final product makes it possible to measure and control the execution time of tasks with high precision and low overhead. It supports atomic swapping of registers in a manner closely related to a context switch.Gregertsen and Skavhaugs’s research in implementing support for the Ada language and run-time environment on the UC3 microcontroller will benefit directly from this project, as the system relies on the hardware support provided by the TMU. Also, as the project can be used in proving that hardware support of execution time monitoring may allow for new ways of ensuring schedulability in real-time systems, it can possibly be a part of a new direction in real-time research.
