The media access control (MAC) protocol is responsible for channel resource sharing and conflict management in the communication process in VANET, which is of great significance for ensuring efficient and reliable communication. The existing MAC protocol with fixed time slot allocation cannot solve the problem of time slot resource exhaustion or waste when the traffic density is unbalanced. In this paper, we propose an adaptive time slot access MAC protocol in distributed VANET (ASMAC). A time slot interchanger (TSI) is a time-domain switch which arranges time slots, or packets of digital information which have been serially multiplexed onto a common carrier. By rearranging the order of these slots in time, packets can be routed to their desired destination. TSI's have applications in telecommunication networks, and an optical implementation provides a good match to existing and future hardware in this field.
