The prior use and age make refurbished products a less desirable option because they are perceived to be of lower quality, to have a reduced performance and a less attractive appearance. This research investigates one strategy on how to enhance the appearance of refurbished products and thereby encourage circular consumption via refurbishment. In 21 in-depth interviews, we explore whether embodying refurbished products in a timeless design can serve as a potential strategy to influence consumer acceptance of refurbished products. Specifically, we examined two design styles that were proposed a

Satisfying these QoS requirements requires that fault tolerance mechanisms through redundancy be used, which may cause the energy of the system to deplete quickly. Since the fast fashion industry is one of the major contributors of waste, it is vital we change the way we produce, consume and market clothing in order to address concerns such as global warming. The garments should either be biodegradable and become nutrients for the earth, or be able to go back into the technological cycle, i.e. to be stripped of components and reused, or else up-cycled with zero waste; a cradle

This chapter considers the reciprocal influences between the presentations of museums and commercial and industrial fairs, from which curators have sometimes admitted having drawn inspiration. These close-knit exchanges between apparently distant worlds show that museums, far from being isolated and timeless institutions, were able to intercept the latest developments in display techniques. Museums used audio-visuals not only for educational purposes and to preserve memory, but also to attract a wider public and to keep up with the dynamic nature of modernity. This issue is discussed with specific reference to two case studies: the 1920s European Avant-Garde exhibition design, and the use of educational films in the galleries of the New York Museum of Science and Industry.

Abstract:
Once valued purely as objets d’art and gems of the ancient Near Eastern canon, seals are today integral to any investigation into ancient bureaucracies and their implications. While practical inquiries into seal use and design now adopt a holistic approach, thematic investigations are thwarted by long-standing assumptions about seals, their function, and the key to deciphering their imagery. Taking the “banquet scene” as an example, this chapter questions the basis for its conventional interpretation and reexamines the data from the viewpoint of its archaeological correlates. A longer perspective highlights the norm and suggests an alternative explanation that better fits the assembled evidence. This particular case also underscores the importance of glyptic (seals and sealings) as the longest continuous record of symbolic communication. To the extent that it revolves around man’s timeless quest to access, comprehend, and control what many perceive to be an alternate but ineffable reality, the glyptic corpus has a key role to play in updating the ancient Near Eastern canon.

Abstract:
Chapter 3 moves from the field to the prison building to reveal how hierarchical prisoner labor arrangements structured an internal prison economy that bought and sold prisoner bodies and services as cell slavery. By narrating southern prisons’ shift from dormitories to cells, this chapter will show how the power and control of prisoner trustees was strengthened by the changes. Within the southern convict guard framework, prison rape is analyzed as a state-orchestrated design rather than as an individual act pf prisoner pathology. Through an analysis of sexual violence in male prisons as a social construct of the southern trustee system, this chapter joins in a historical turn toward placing sexual violence at the very center of racial oppression. Seeking to take prison rape seriously as evidence of evolving state control and orchestration, the chapter pushes against the criminological view that has cast prison rape as a timeless function of the prisoners’ own pathology. The chapter also considers how women prisoners experienced the southern trusty system and the state’s attempt to isolate and target women that the prison classified as the “aggressive female homosexual.”
