Non-governmental organizations for environmental conservation have a significant interest in monitoring conservation-related media and getting timely updates about infrastructure construction projects as they may cause massive impact to key conservation areas. Distributed systems are widely used today, mostly supported by the Internet. In consequence, there is an increasing demand for networked applications and services traditionally available only in specific, controlled settings. This includes many real-time applications, mostly mission-critical, such as multimedia rendering or on-line transaction processing. But the Internet, as well as many other small-scale computing environments, is open in nature and hence unpredictable. Therefore, to construct such applications in a dependable way, system architects have to face, among others, the challenge

Description Logics (DLs) are a family of logic-based knowledge representation (KR) formalisms designed to represent and reason about static conceptual knowledge in a semantically well-understood way. The largest part of the present work is dedicated to integrating DLs with action formalisms, with the main goal of obtaining decidable action formalisms with an expressiveness significantly beyond propositional. The bag-of-features model was used to build the classifier. Fisher Vectors were also studied. We focus on the potential of the methods, with the joint optimization of two constraints: the classification precision and its efficiency. On the performance side, a new local descriptor,

Abstract:
Description Logic actions specify adaptations of description logic interpretations based on some preconditions defined using a description logic. We consider DL actions in which preconditions can be specified using DL axioms as well as using conjunctive queries, and combinatiosn thereof. We investigate complexity bounds for the executability and the projection problem for these actions, which respectively ask whether an action can be executed on models of an interpretation, and which entailments are satisfied after an action has been executed on this model. In addition, we consider a set of ne

Abstract:
Profound climate change-driven environmental changes observed in Alaska prompted the National Park Service?s Alaska Leadership Council (ALC) to dedicate a half-day of their September 2019 meeting to understanding and addressing key climate change vulnerabilities. The session aimed to introduce participants to the Resist-Accept-Direct (RAD) framework?an emerging framing tool for exploring the ?universe? of potential adaptation actions?and to initiate broader discussion regarding current and potential future adaptation actions in each of Alaska?s national parks. Participating superintendents wer

Structural details on the interacting faces of toxins and sodium channels (Navs), and particularly identification of elements that confer specificity for insects, are difficult to approach and require suitable experimental systems. Therefore, natural toxins capable of differential recognition of insect and mammalian Navs are valuable leads for design of selective compounds in insect control. We have characterized several scorpion toxins that vary in preference for insect and mammalian Navs, and identified residues important for their action. However, despite many efforts worldwide, only little
