Abstract:
The purpose of this study was to determine whether Educational Kinesiology® integration movements or repatterning in conjunction with the integration movements affect the response times of college students to a visual stimulus. Ten men and ten women were randomly assigned to each of the three conditions: control, Edu-K movement, or repatterned Edu-K movements. Each subject was pretested on simple and choice response-time tasks. Following the pretest, subjects in the control group sat quietly for 10 minutes. The movement group utilized seven Brain Gym® activities. Subjects in the repatterned group experienced Dennison's Laterality Repatterning prior to doing the same Brain Gym activities. All subjects were then retested to assess changes in performance using 30 trials of each task. Statistical analyses indicated significant differences in improvement between the groups on the 4-choice task, with the repatterned group showing greater change than the Edu-K movement-only group, who in turn showed greater improvement than the control group. The groups improved by 6%, 31/2%, and 1%, respectively. No group differences were significant on the simple task, although a similar trend was indicated. Men responded faster than women on both tasks; however, the amount of improvement was similar for both.

Abstract:
This study examined the use of literature as a coping strategy among people who had experienced loss, comparing it to the use of music. Theory suggested that these artistic media can facilitate insight, recognition, support, relaxation, new emotions, and/or distraction. Among 198 respondents, 64 (32%) reported using neither medium during their grief period, 65 (33%) used only music, 19 (10%) used only literature, and 50 (25%) used both. Using artistic media was related to an emotional experience of the loss in two ways: 1) preference for emotion-focused coping was greater among those who used artistic media, 2) those who had used artistic media also reported greater impact of the loss. Reading was most strongly associated with distraction and listening to music with recognition. For those using both media, this suggests a coping process that alternates between distraction and recognition, in line with the Dual Process Model of Coping with Bereavement.

Abstract:
The commuting patterns of low-income urban residents are discussed. On the basis of the spatial mismatch hypothesis, the question of whether central city low-income residents face an undue burden of commuting cost (time and distance) to work compared with the rest of the population is examined. Data from the 1995 Nationwide Personal Transportation Survey were used in the analysis. Models explaining travel time and distance to work are combined with a model explaining the probability of being employed on the basis of individual and neighborhood characteristics, thus correcting for sample selectivity. In general, it was found that urban residents are less likely to work than their suburban counterparts. Among the people who work, residents of low-income urban neighborhoods commute longer and farther than residents of low-income suburban neighborhoods. The average differences for the residents of the lowest-income neighborhoods are only 6 min and 2 mi (3 km). On the basis of the value of time, it is concluded that these national differences are not too large. The undue commute burden faced by residents of low-income neighborhoods may be shown to be a greater problem in some metropolitan areas than in others, suggesting further research at the metropolitan or regional level.

Abstract:
Hard times give rise to greater demand for protection. International trade rules include provisions that allow for raising barriers to aid industries when they suffer economic injury. Yet widespread use of flexibility measures may undermine the trade system and worsen economic conditions. How do states balance these conflicting pressures? This article assesses the effect of crises on cooperation in trade. We hypothesize that governments impose less protectionism during economic crisis when economic troubles are widespread across countries than when they face crisis in isolation. The lesson of Smoot–Hawley and coordination through international economic institutions represent mechanisms of informal governance that encourage cooperation to avoid a spiral of protectionism. Analysis of industry-level data on protection measures for the period from 1996 to 2011 provides support for our claim that under conditions of shared hard times, states exercise strategic self-restraint to avoid beggar-thy-neighbor policies.

Abstract:
Immigrants experience many obstacles in obtaining jobs with comparable pay and conditions to native workers. Arguably, unionisation could offer migrant workers the mechanism to obtain better pay and conditions. This paper examines whether migrant workers have benefited from unionisation in terms of pay, pensions and health insurance in Ireland. Based on a large-scale national survey, we find that union membership delivers a modest wage premium of a relatively similar magnitude to both nationals and immigrant workers. Unionised immigrants are twice as likely as non-unionised immigrants to earn above the median hourly earnings and have greater pension coverage. In particular, immigrants from the new accession states in the European Union, with the lowest mean hourly earnings of any immigrant group, gain the most from union membership. Nonetheless, Irish nationals enjoy greater benefits from membership than immigrant workers. Addressing this discrepancy will require a greater focus by unions on organising immigrant workers.

Abstract:
Abstract Background Delay in the diagnosis of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) can lead to adverse outcomes. In 2006, the CAG Wait Time Consensus Group recommended that wait times for patients with symptoms highly suggestive of IBD should be seen within two weeks. In 2007, the greater Calgary region established a central access and triage system to improve access to care as well as the “High-Risk IBD clinic” (HR-IBD) to further expedite the access of patients with IBD alarm symptoms. These included diarrhea, rectal bleeding, weight loss, abnormalities in laboratory and stool investigations. Aims The current study aimed to evaluate whether patient access to the HR-IBD clinic in the Calgary region was within recommended wait times. Methods We conducted a cross-sectional study of charts from consented patients pulled from the EMR of five Gastroenterologists in the Calgary region that received HR-IBD referrals from Feb 2014 to Jan 2018. Of the 206 patients included, the majority were female (139 vs 65) and the mean age was 34.4 y, with no statistical difference in age between genders (p=0.81). Data analysis was done with Stata (StataCorp 2019). Results The mean time to initial consult was 74.8 days (median 64), whereas time to endoscopy was 85.5 days (median 77). There was no statistical difference in the mean wait times between genders. Of the patient charts reviewed, 27% of referrals had a confirmed diagnosis of IBD (CD 17%, UC 11%). Patients with a diagnosis of UC waited a mean of 60.1 days (median 60) until initial consultation and patients with a diagnosis of CD waited 77 days (median 63.5), although this was not statistically different (p=0.27). The mean time to endoscopy for patients with UC was 77 days (median 67), and 85.4 days for patients with CD (median 78.5), again not statistically different. These wait times are below the reported wait times for all GI complaints, of 92 days from referral to consultation and 155 days from referral to procedure, as reported in the SAGE survey (2012). Although there were no differences in time to consult and endoscopy between groups, there were notable differences in alarm symptoms reported in the referral. For example, rectal bleeding was reported in 81.8% of referrals that culminated in a diagnosis of UC, as compared to 50% in CD and 47.6% of non-IBD patients. Further analysis in which alarm symptoms correlate with a final diagnosis of IBD may guide triaging of referrals to decrease the time to diagnosis. Conclusions Timely access for consultation and endoscopy for patients presenting with high-risk features for IBD by Gastroenterology in the Calgary region remains above the CAG recommended wait times. Further correlation of high-risk features with a final diagnosis of IBD will help risk-stratify referrals in order to decrease time to IBD diagnosis. Upper deviation results are obtained for the split time of a supercritical continuous-time Markov branching process. More precisely, we establish the existence of logarithmic limits for the likelihood that the split times of the process are greater than an identified value and determine an expression for the limiting quantity. We also give an estimation for the lower deviation probability of the split times, which shows that the scaling is completely different from the upper deviations.

Abstract:
Abstract We determined reference levels of minerals, fatty acids, and fat-soluble micronutrients in eggs from wild Attwater's Tympanuchus cupido attwateri and two (Minnesota, Nebraska) greater prairie-chicken T. c. pinnatus populations for comparison with eggs produced by captive Attwater's prairie-chickens to help guide formulation and evaluation of captive diets. Levels of all minerals found in wild Attwater's prairie-chicken eggs were similar to those in at least one of the two greater prairie-chicken populations, but these levels frequently differed between the two greater prairie-chicken populations. Ratios for n-6:n-3 fatty acids were >3 times higher for Minnesota greater prairie-chickens, which had more access to waste grain than Attwater's or Nebraska greater prairie-chickens. Captive eggs had n-6:n-3 ratios 6.7 times the pooled wild samples, while wild eggs had higher levels of anhydrolutein, zeaxanthin, β-carotene, and total carotenoids. More magnesium, zinc, and manganese were observed in wild eggs compared with those produced in captivity. Flaxseed was added to the captive breeder diet in an attempt to lower egg n-6:n-3 ratios, along with additional carotenoids found in marigold extract. These dietary modifications successfully lowered the n-6:n-3 ratio by 46%, but this ratio was still 3.6 times higher in captive eggs, consistent with the grain-based formulation of the breeder diet. Carotenoid additions successfully raised total carotenoids, but increases were primarily for lutein and not zeaxanthin or β-carotene as intended. Variability in egg nutrient composition among the three wild populations suggests that some tolerance exists in maternal diets, but impacts to offspring fitness are unknown. Given the purported importance of maternal nutrition to fitness of embryos and neonate chicks, we suggest additional research is needed to quantify the influence of key nutrient levels on offspring fitness for both captive and wild populations.

Abstract:
To determine if biological efficiency of shiitake mushrooms was affected by the density of spawn inoculation, white oak logs about 31 inches (0.79 m) long were cut from trees harvested 14 Apr. and inoculated 6 May 2003 with strain WR46 of Lentinula edodes using four rates of inoculation. The number of holes drilled and inoculated with spawn was determined by multiplying the weight of each log by 0.5, 1, 2, or 3. A 15-pound log (6.8 kg) inoculated at “3” times the weight would have 45 holes drilled and inoculated. Each rate of inoculation treatment was replicated three times with three subsamples per replication. After six harvests over a 21-month period, the biological efficiency (BE) of the logs increased by 1.94% per additional hole per pound (0.45 kg). This increase in BE would result in $1.15 in additional returns per log with a cost of only $0.15 more per log due to increased spawn use, resulting in a net profit, excluding increased labor and wax costs, of $1.00 per log.

Abstract:
The objective of the present study was to describe the time courses of renal responses during renal sympathetic stimulation and to determine whether the kidney can provide a sustained response to sympathetic stimulation for 3 h. In four pentobarbital sodium-anesthetized dogs, stimulation (3.3 Hz) of a greater splanchnic nerve (GSN) on one side caused reductions in renal blood flow (RBF) and sodium excretion (UNaV) of both stimulated and contralateral-denervated kidneys, plus an increase in plasma renin activity (PRA). During continued stimulation, RBF partially recovered, but UNaV fell to less than 5% of control and PRA rose and remained at least eight times above control. In nine dogs, a single GSN was stimulated after ipsilateral adrenal medullectomy and ligation of the splanchnic circulation. The acute response to GSN stimulation was now confined to the ipsilateral kidney. Ipsilateral RBF fell by 32 +/- 10% but returned to 85 +/- 5% of control values by the end of the stimulation period. Contralateral RBF fell slowly by approximately 10%. Ipsilateral and contralateral UNaV fell to 34 +/- 10 and 43 +/- 11% of control values, respectively. PRA increased rapidly at the onset of GSN stimulation and remained at least 2.8 times control levels. After stimulation, RBF, UNaV, and PRA returned toward control levels. These results confirm the findings of others that the response of the renal vasculature to sympathetic stimulation is mainly transient. However, they additionally demonstrate a strong and sustained decrease in UNaV lasting for the total 3-h period of sympathetic stimulation.

Abstract:
Objectives: In this study, we characterized the sweet flavor ingredients in 2 internationally popular waterpipe tobaccos, flavored and unflavored. Methods: Tobacco extracts were quantified for humectants, sugars, menthol, nicotine, and sugar alcohols. Qualitative screening of flavor volatiles was performed, and 12 flavor volatiles were quantified. Results: Humectant content was 20 times greater in the flavored brand versus the unflavored, largely due to greater concentration of the glycerol. Sugar content was approximately 1.7 times higher in the flavored tobacco. Vanillin levels were > 200 times greater in the flavored brand. Nicotine content of the unflavored tobacco was 1.5 times greater on a mg/g tobacco basis, which can be explained by the much larger humectant mass content of the flavored tobacco. Conclusions: Flavored waterpipe tobacco may contain significantly greater amounts of humectants and flavor components (the compounds that make up the overall flavor), which may be harmful to users, compared to unflavored. Limiting flavors in waterpipe tobacco could aid in maximizing public health benefits.

The substrates were composed using commercial substrate (CM), bovine manure (BM), worm humus (WM) and rice husk ash (HA), in volumetric proportions: (S1) 100% CS; (S2) 40% CS + 20% BM + 20% WH + 20% HA; (S3) 60% CS + 20% WH + 20% HA; (S4) 60% CS + 20% BM + 20% HA; and (S5) 80% CS + 20% BM. Emergence, emergence speed index, height, number of leaves, length of the largest leaf, length of the largest root, dry mass of the aboveground part, dry mass of the root system and total dry mass were evaluated. The seedlings growth of the Petunia x hybridaand G. globosachanged according to the characteristics of the substrates and the growing seasons. The substrate composed with 80% commercial substrate and 20% bovine manure showed similar or superior results to the commercial substrate and can be used in order to reduce production costs without prejudice to the seedlings growth. The cultivation of Petunia x hybridain April resulted in seedlings with greater height, leaf length and greater accumulation of phytomass. The G. globosa seedlings showed greater development of the aboveground part and the root system, in addition to greater accumulation of phytomass when cultivated in October.

Abstract:
Dairy cattle spend considerable time in outside barnyards. Nine barnyards were constructed to examine impacts of surface materials (bark, sand, soil) and timing of cattle corralling (before and after 3–14-day corralling periods) on fluxes of carbon dioxide (CO2), methane (CH4), ammonia (NH3), nitrous oxide (N2O) and CO2 equivalents (CO2eq). Surface, year, and surface*year interactions accounted for 64%, 6% and 16% of CO2 flux variability. Average CO2 flux from bark (2552 mg/m2.h) was 3.1–3.9 times greater than from sand or soil, especially after bark replenishment. Timing, year, timing*year and surface*year accounted for 40%, 17%, 14%, and 17% of CH4 variability. Average CH4 flux after corralling (10.6 mg/m2.h) was 3.8 times greater than before corralling, and 5.2 times greater the year following bark replenishment. Timing accounted for 67% of NH3 variability. After corralling, NH3 fluxes (1622 µg/m2.h) were 95 times greater than before corralling. Timing, surface, surface*timing and timing*year accounted for 33%, 10%, 24% and 13% of N2O variability. Average N2O flux after corralling (2252 µg/m2.h) was 3.7 times greater than before corralling. Surface and surface*year accounted for 71% and 16% of CO2eq variability. Average CO2eq flux from bark (3188 mg/m2.h) was 2.5–3.0 times greater than sand or soil. Greatest CO2eq flux occurred the year after bark replenishment. Tradeoffs between gas emissions, nutrient runoff and leaching, and cow comfort and health need to be assessed more fully before recommending beneficial practices for barnyard surface type and management.

Abstract:
There is great pressure to improve Marketing accountability as well as its integration with the financial area in order to create shareholder value. In this sense, a research was carried out to evaluate the relationship between the value of the main global brands, revenue, profit margin and market capitalization of companies in the period from 2007 to 2016, with emphasis on the effect of the crisis and after the American crisis and global of 2008. The analysis was centered on the comparison of the indicators of a group composed of the companies holding the strongest brands in the world with a group of the world's largest companies in the concept of S & P 500, excluding the holders of the strongest brands in the first group. Among other points, the survey found that companies that have stronger brands, based on market value, have a net profit margin of 9.8% in the 10-year period, 42% higher than the 6.9% margin of largest companies in the world. The results also suggest that in the moment of external crisis the strong brands allow a relatively greater shielding of this margin.

Abstract:
Carfilzomib is a second-generation proteasome inhibitor that irreversibly inhibits chymotrypsin-like (CT-L) activities of the proteasome, and is indicated for relapsed or refractory multiple myeloma. Cardiotoxicity is a well-established adverse effect of carfilzomib. The extent of cardiac toxicity in the literature spans anywhere from palpitations to cardiac arrest, with the most commonly reported manifestation being new-onset or worsening heart failure. A pre-clinical study of the pharmacokinetics and pharmacodynamics of carfilzomib given via intravenous bolus or 30-minute infusion in rats showed that carfilzomib can strongly induce apoptosis and potently damage cardiac myocytes at clinically relevant concentrations. Moreover, the mortality rate with the bolus administration was 44% whereas the same dose administered as a 30-minute infusion did not result in mortality. There remains limited clinical data regarding the safety of carfilzomib at doses of 27–56 mg/m2 based on infusion times as these doses have not been well studied. This retrospective review was conducted to evaluate the safety of carfilzomib at doses >27 mg/m2 at all infusion times.

Abstract:
Abstract Crop water use efficiency (WUE) has come into sharp focus as population growth and climate change place increasing strain on the water used in cropping. Rainfed crops are being challenged by an upward trend in evaporative demand as average temperatures rise and, in many regions, there is an increased irregularity and a downward trend in rainfall. In addition, irrigated cropping faces declining water availability and increased competition from other users. Crop WUE would be improved by, first, ensuring that as much water as possible is actually transpired by the crop rather than being wasted. Deeper roots and greater early crop vigour are two traits that should help achieve this. Crop WUE would also be improved by achieving greater biomass per unit water transpired. A host of traits has been proposed to address this outcome. Restricting crop transpiration through lower stomatal conductance is assessed as having limited utility compared with traits that improve carbon gain, such as enhancements to photosynthetic biochemistry and responsiveness, or greater mesophyll conductance. Ultimately, the most useful outcomes for improved crop WUE will probably be achieved by combining traits to achieve synergistic benefit. The potential utility of trait combinations is supported by the results of crop simulation modelling.

Abstract:
350 black South African 9-year-old children were compared with 239 white British children on the Standard Progressive Matrices and 12 reaction time tests giving measures of decision times, movement times and variabilities in tasks of varying complexity. The black children obtained a mean IQ of approximately 65. They also had slower decision times and greater variabilities than the white children, but they had faster movement times. The magnitude of the white advantage on decision times was 0.68 of a standard deviation, about one-third of the white advantage on the Progressive Matrices. The result suggests that around one-third of the white advantage on intelligence tests may lie in faster information processing capacity.

The purpose was to analyze the learning processes in virtual education in students of a university in Huacho, 2020, where two categories have been considered: virtual education and skills in the context of this health emergency. From the qualitative approach, the population made up of university students was studied and the effectiveness of virtual education was obtained as a result, considered as a means of interaction between students and teachers despite the limitations: internet access, saturation of the university platform and greater teacher training in the use of technological tools. The category of competencies shows the ignorance of students about generic competences and specific competences, for which it is necessary to reinforce virtual education in the accompaniment and training of teachers and students.

Abstract:
The Master Gardener Program sponsored by the Univ. of Missouri provides the metropolitan Kansas City area with information, demonstrations and programs designed to educate the general public about gardening topics and suggests solutions to current or anticipated problems. The main objectives of this evaluation were to identify the satisfaction level of clients (public) and the Master Gardeners from the program, demographics of Master Gardeners, how the program has changed the quality of life of the Master Gardeners and to identify any constraints. An evaluation committee consisting a social scientist, horticulturist and Master Gardeners were formed to develop the process and tools necessary for a comprehensive evaluation. It was decided that each facet of the program should have its own separate evaluation. The committee met several times to develop evaluation tools (survey questionnaires), to gather information from clients and the Master Gardeners. The results indicate a high level of satisfaction from clients and the Master Gardeners. The program had made positive changes in lives of Master Gardeners. The results provide guidance in decision making for further implementation such as it was found that the program should give a strong emphasis on providing new or advance horticultural information to Master Gardeners through continuing education.

Abstract:
Objective. To determine the dynamics and state of neurosurgical care for tumors of the spinal cord and spine (TSCS) in Ukraine. Materials and methods. The work is based on the analysis of hospitalizations and surgical treatment of patients with TSCS in neurosurgical departments of Ukraine in 2000-2019. Results. In 2019, 1,325 patients with TSCS were hospitalized in neurosurgical departments of Ukraine, which is 2,3 times more than in 2000 (567), per 1 million population - almost 3 times (34,7 vs. 11, 6 ). Over 20 years, the number of operated patients increased 2,8 times (from 385 to 1079), per 1 million population - 3,6 times (from 7,9 to 28,3), there was an increase in surgical activity by 20% (from 67,9 to 81,4%), a decrease in the general and postoperative mortality - twice (from 2,6 to 1,2% and from 2,6 to 1,3% respectively). Patients with TSCS account for 1,5% of all patients hospitalized in neurosurgical departments of Ukraine, 12,8% of all CNS neoplasms and 5,2% of all spinal pathology. Vertebral tumors account for 42,64% of all TSCS and extramedullary tumors have an incidence rate similar to vertebral tumors (42,64%), intramedullary tumors account for 14,72%. In 2019, 74.4% more patients with extramedullary tumors were hospitalized than in 2000 (565 and 324 respectively), and 84.5% more were operated on (463 and 251 respectively). The rate of increase is even higher per 1 million population. In 2019, there were 14.8 hospitalizations per 1 million population for extramedullary tumors, which is 2.2 times greater than in 2000 (6,6 hospitalizations), and 12,1 operations, which is 2,4 times greater than in 2000 (5,1 operations). In 2019, patients with intramedullary tumors were hospitalized 2,2 times more than in 2000. (195 and 89 respectively), were operated 2,5 times more (151 and 61 respectively). The rate of increase is even 4higher per 1 million population. In 2019, there were 5,1 hospitalizations for intramedullary tumors per 1 million population, which is 2,8 times greater than in 2000 (1,8 hospitalizations), and 4,0 operations, which is 3,2 times greater than in 2000 (1,2 operations). In 2019, patients with vertebral tumors were hospitalized 3.7 times more than in 2000 (565 and 154 respectively), were operated 6,4 times more (465 and 73 respectively). The rate of increase is even higher per 1 million population. In 2019, there were 14,8 hospitalizations per 1 million population for vertebral tumors, which is 4,7 greater than in 2000 (3,1 hospitalizations), and 12,2 surgeries, which is 8,2 greater than in 2000 (1,5 operations). Сonclusions. The introduction of modern neuroimaging methods and advanced treatment methods into clinical practice has contributed to an increase in the number of hospitalizations and surgical interventions in TSCS.

Abstract:
The objective was to assess the prevalence of anemia and nutritional status of mothers and children under five years among Syrian refugees in Lebanon and to identify nutritional deficiencies among pregnant, lactating, and non-pregnant non-lactating (NPNLM) mothers. A cross-sectional study was conducted among Syrian refugee mothers with children under five years in Greater Beirut, Lebanon (n = 433). Data on socio-economic status, maternal health, lifestyle characteristics, dietary intake, anthropometric measurements, and hemoglobin concentrations were collected. The prevalence of anemia was 21.7% among mothers and 30.5% among children. NPNLM with overweight/obesity and an at-risk waist circumference (WC) had 14.7-times and 10.9-times higher odds of anemia than mothers with normal WC and weight. Children of anemic mothers had 2.7-times and 4.4-times higher odds of total and mild anemia than those of non-anemic. Higher odds of mild anemia were found among children of lactating mothers than of NPNLM. A high percent energy intake of total fat and sugar was found among all mothers. Nutritional inadequacy was identified in higher proportions of lactating and pregnant mothers than NPNLM. Our findings highlighted the co-existence of overnutrition and anemia among Syrian refugee mothers and undernutrition among children from the same household. Culture-specific interventions are needed to support maternal nutrition, to ensure the health and wellbeing of their offspring.

Abstract:
This study aimed to determine the gas exchange and the chlorophyll content of green pepper plants under doses and times of application of bio-fertilizers based on manure and enriched organic compost. Two experiments were carried out simultaneously with applications of bio-fertilizers prepared from manure and enriched organic compost, one using cattle manure (CBF) and the other sheep manure (SBF). For these, four doses of biological fertilizers (100, 200, 300 and 400 dm³ ha-1), three application times (0, 30 and 60 days after transplantation - DAT) and absolute control, referring to the absence of fertilization, were used. treatments. were arranged in a randomized block design, totaling 13 treatments. The variables evaluated were: the relative chlorophyll a, b and total content; liquid photosynthesis (A); stomatal conductance (gs); internal CO2 concentration (Ci); instant carboxylation efficiency (iCE - A/Ci); transpiration rate (T); intrinsic water use efficiency (iWUE - A/gs); and water use efficiency (WUE - A/E). Gs, A and T, showed significant effect at 60 DAT with the application of SBF and Ci at 30 DAT with CBF. The dose of 400 dm³ ha-1 of SBF provided greater gas results, and the doses of 200 and 300 dm³ ha-1 of CBF promoted a greater Ci, greater stomatal conductance, greater liquid photosynthesis and better water use efficiency, which results in a greater plant fresh weight at the time of flowering induction.

Abstract:
An infinite homogeneous d-dimensional medium initially is at zero temperature, u=0. A heat impulse is applied at the origin, raising the temperature there to a value greater than a constant value u0>0. The temperature at the origin then decays, and when it reaches u0, another equal-sized heat impulse is applied at a normalized time τ1=1. Subsequent equal-sized heat impulses are applied at the origin at the normalized times τn, n=2,3,…, when the temperature there has decayed to u0. This sequence of normalized waiting times τn can be defined recursively by [Formula: see text] where d>0. This heat conduction problem was studied by Myshkis (J. Differential Equations Appl.3 (1997), 89–91), and he posed the problem to find an asymptotic expression for the τn as n→∞. The cases for dimensions d=1 and d≥3 have been treated by Chen, Chow, and Hsieh (J. Differential Equations Appl.6 (2000), 309–318). Here, we deal with the two-dimensional case, d=2.

Abstract:
Abstract.Minimum inter-event time (MIT) is an index used to delineate independent storms from sub-daily rainfall records. An individual storm is defined as a period of rainfall with preceding and succeeding dry periods less than MIT. The exponential method was used to determine an appropriate MITexp for the eastern monsoon region of China based on observed 1-min resolution rainfall data from 18 stations. Results showed that dry periods between storms greater than MITexp followed an exponential distribution. MITexp values varied from 7.6 h to 16.6 h using 1-min precipitation data, which were statistically not different from values using hourly data at p = 0.05. At least ten years of records were necessary to obtain a stable MIT. Values of storm properties are sensitive to the change in MIT values, especially when MIT values are small. Average precipitation depths across all stations were 45% greater, durations were 84% longer, maximum 30-min intensities were 27% greater, and average rainfall intensities were 20% less when using an MIT of 10 h, the average value of MITexp over 18 stations, compared to 2 h. This indicates that more attention should be paid to the use of the MIT index as it relates to storm properties. Keywords: China, Exponential method, Minimum inter-event time, Storm, Storm property.
