This thesis attempts to show that even in the metaphysical meditation of the Romantic pursuit in William Wordsworth’s “Tintern Abbey,” the effect and power of the poet’s bodily involvement remains to be the crucial point for his profounding transcendence. Working from Edmund Burke’s sublime theory makes the poet’s bodily reactions the major starting point to investigate the growing tension between his sensual awareness and the imaginative world alone with his reminiscent journey. And working from Sigmund Freud’s idea of Pleasure Principle makes vivid the poet’s “inorganic desire,” revealing as the construction of his soul transfiguration. Wordsworth’s soul transfigures into different life forms or form of things in his poetic world. The uncanny fear of finding the poet’s soul in lifeless things then footnotes the possible tension of a sublime reading in researching the poet’s emotion and the emotion of reading the poem.
