Abstract:
As any event, whatever it may be, bears the mark of the period and of the society when and where it was conceived, I believed it would be of interest to situate, in its ideological context, Herge's comic, Tintin au Congo, often criticised by readers in spite of its enthusiastic reception. After having briefly recalled Tintin's adventures in the Congo, I then explain the circumstances of the creation of this album and the ideological climate which determined the contents. I go on to recall how the Belgian Catholic middleclass actually imagined Africa to be. In my final point, 1 try to indicate the reasons for the success of Herge 's work

Abstract:
This article traces ways in which comic fanzines of the late 1970s and early 1980s transgressed against and conformed to accepted Spanish constructions of gender and sexuality of the day. Research is drawn from close readings of comics found in zines of the period, such as 96 Lágrimas, Ediciones moulinsart and Kaka de Luxe. Young Madrileños literally drew on images and tropes from a variety of sources, from punk musicians to Tintin in the Congo, making them their own. Through fanzines, often sold in Madrid’s Rastro, a Roma marketplace, young people became cultural producers, creating a culture that was postmodern and anti-fascist.

Abstract:
The recent furore over Tintin au Congo in Britain is symptomatic of Western concerns about the perpetuation of negative racial stereotypes within much classic children's literature. This article interrogates such anxiety via discussion of three texts (by Hergé, Michel Tournier and Maryse Condé) produced for a European readership but set and – crucially – read in other parts of the world. Each text demonstrates the difficulty of predicting responses which frequently confound expectations and vary widely according to the situation of the reader. An ostensibly disparaging text can be a source of pride and hilarity, whilst a work produced to fight the cause of an oppressed community can distress and disturb members of that very group. Critical attendance to the reception of canonical texts within colonial and postcolonial settings will, it is argued, provide the most satisfactory response to the calls for censorship which utterly neglect alternative, resistant readings and non-European readers.

Abstract:
This essay examines through a postcolonial analysis of the intermedial aspects of comicbooks how stereotypes and depictions of the Other and the alien are formed in Tintin au Congo and Tintin en Amérique. The aim has been to call attention to the importance of the relationship between text and image to create meaning, as well as to gain a deeper insight into how different stereotypes are created and their function. Hergé illustrated the Tintin-books according to something that would come to be known as ”The Clear Line”, a way of drawing that focused on the readbility of the images. In this essay I argue that the simplicity of these readable images were used in his work as comic relief but also to create an awareness of deeper social issues in the world. There is a notable difference between Tintin au Congo and Tintin en Amérique where in the first album Hergé seems to be governed by these stereotypes, fully embracing them without questioning. In the second one however he is consciously and playfully using these images to make the reader aware of the problems with Othering, simultaneously using recognizable symbols that everyone can understand but with a critical gaze that not only reveals these problems but also condemns them. The use of these symbols and stereotypes highlights the importance of the relationship between text and image, as signification and meaning can differ depending on translation and the words used.

Abstract:
Purpose: Our purpose with this study has been to analyze the debate regarding the attempt to ban Tintin in the Congos in 2012. With the starting-point being the argument made that children have to be protected from literature that is considered to be controversial, we’ve been interested in seeing how the nuances of the debate have been shaped by the use of arguments and language by those participating in the debate. Theoretical points of departure: Agenda setting theory, Framing theory Objectives and focus: The study has the following questions In what way is the debate surrounding Tintin in the Congos, censorship and children’s ability to handle literature considered controversial of interest in understanding how we use language to communicate? Who are the ones taking part in the debate regarding the ban of Tintin in the Congos? What are their arguments? What are some common themes presented in books aimed towards children between the ages of 6-9 2017?   Method: To answer our questions, we have analyzed our material through text analysis. Material: We have for our questions analyzed articles. They have been selected both from the newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet as well as from the evening newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen. Result: Your words matter. It matters how and when we use them. Words are an expression of power and reveals the norms of society.

This work tries to analyses the 1931 and 1946 editions of the comic book The adventures of Tintin: Tintin in Congo . The purpose is to investigate how the Congolese are represented in this comic book. The author of the comics and many authors that wrote about the comics considers the stories realists . My goal is not to tell how the real world is, but to demonstrate that these comic books are not realists, but are committed to a viewpoint about reality that is based in racism, paternalism and colonialism. I will analyze the images and text in order to understand how the discourse it produces works. This discourse is not only a result of its society, but also something that built the said society, not only because it had a huge base of children readers, but because it was a commercial success. This discourse presents various racists ideas, shown naturally, where Congolese are systematically put down by Tintin, in a association with the Congolese historical experience, where they were put down by government officials, police force, work exploration and an extremely biased legislation. Thus, I will study the representation of this colonized people as an important part of the process of identity construction, either for the colonized and the colonist

Abstract:

Abstract:
