Abstract:
This essay examines through a postcolonial analysis of the intermedial aspects of comicbooks how stereotypes and depictions of the Other and the alien are formed in Tintin au Congo and Tintin en Amérique. The aim has been to call attention to the importance of the relationship between text and image to create meaning, as well as to gain a deeper insight into how different stereotypes are created and their function. Hergé illustrated the Tintin-books according to something that would come to be known as ”The Clear Line”, a way of drawing that focused on the readbility of the images. In this essay I argue that the simplicity of these readable images were used in his work as comic relief but also to create an awareness of deeper social issues in the world. There is a notable difference between Tintin au Congo and Tintin en Amérique where in the first album Hergé seems to be governed by these stereotypes, fully embracing them without questioning. In the second one however he is consciously and playfully using these images to make the reader aware of the problems with Othering, simultaneously using recognizable symbols that everyone can understand but with a critical gaze that not only reveals these problems but also condemns them. The use of these symbols and stereotypes highlights the importance of the relationship between text and image, as signification and meaning can differ depending on translation and the words used.

Abstract:
Purpose: Our purpose with this study has been to analyze the debate regarding the attempt to ban Tintin in the Congos in 2012. With the starting-point being the argument made that children have to be protected from literature that is considered to be controversial, we’ve been interested in seeing how the nuances of the debate have been shaped by the use of arguments and language by those participating in the debate. Theoretical points of departure: Agenda setting theory, Framing theory Objectives and focus: The study has the following questions In what way is the debate surrounding Tintin in the Congos, censorship and children’s ability to handle literature considered controversial of interest in understanding how we use language to communicate? Who are the ones taking part in the debate regarding the ban of Tintin in the Congos? What are their arguments? What are some common themes presented in books aimed towards children between the ages of 6-9 2017?   Method: To answer our questions, we have analyzed our material through text analysis. Material: We have for our questions analyzed articles. They have been selected both from the newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet as well as from the evening newspapers Aftonbladet and Expressen. Result: Your words matter. It matters how and when we use them. Words are an expression of power and reveals the norms of society.

This work tries to analyses the 1931 and 1946 editions of the comic book The adventures of Tintin: Tintin in Congo . The purpose is to investigate how the Congolese are represented in this comic book. The author of the comics and many authors that wrote about the comics considers the stories realists . My goal is not to tell how the real world is, but to demonstrate that these comic books are not realists, but are committed to a viewpoint about reality that is based in racism, paternalism and colonialism. I will analyze the images and text in order to understand how the discourse it produces works. This discourse is not only a result of its society, but also something that built the said society, not only because it had a huge base of children readers, but because it was a commercial success. This discourse presents various racists ideas, shown naturally, where Congolese are systematically put down by Tintin, in a association with the Congolese historical experience, where they were put down by government officials, police force, work exploration and an extremely biased legislation. Thus, I will study the representation of this colonized people as an important part of the process of identity construction, either for the colonized and the colonist

Abstract: This text seeks to analyse the representations about Congo within the Tintim comic stories, through an approach that unites the structural analysis, as conceived by Lévi-Strauss, to the historical and polítical context of its production. Abstract:

Abstract:

Therein, the transposition of that culture to the formal education constitutes the principal concern of this work. We present possibilities of dimensioning pedagogic practices of educators who act in the basic education in the Cariri region in the state of Cearà from this cultural expression of African basis. The methodology utilized took as basis the narratives which occurred through the individual and collective memory of the social actors belonging to this universe which retreat the history of a community which has maintained itself alive along the generations, besides permitting a reorganization of the negro presence in the state of CearÃ. During the accomplishment of the research photographic registers and recordings have been made of three cultural-artistic events where the group was the main attraction. The study of the African aspects of the Cariri region has unveiled unknown histories of a great part of the local educators, yet they still carry significant elements for the comprehension of the historical-cultural context in which it is inserted and, because of that, they are important components for the formation of children and young negro people and non-negro ones who attend the schools of the region.

Abstract:
The objective of this study was to investigate differences in the portrayal of Western European citizens and non Western European citizens in Hergé’s graphic novels about the young journalist Tintin. We wanted to see if the globalization during the mid 1900’s had an effect on Hergé’s way of portraying the world. We started off by selecting nine novels from three different periods of time, though we read all of the novels in The Adventures of Tintin. The periods were: the years in between the world wars (three novels), the post war years (four novels), and the beginning of the new age – late 60’s and 70’s (two novels). In each novel, we analyzed three different situations, in three different boxes from the novel. The situations we chose to analyze were: a portraying of one or more non Western European citizens, a communication between two Western European citizens about a non Western European citizen or its culture, and a communication between a Western European citizen and a person from outside Western Europe. We also made an analysis on every album which we based on our impressions of the novel as a whole. The analysis revealed a certain difference in the way Hergé depicted people from Western Europe as compared to people from other parts of the world. People outside of the culture of Western Europe are portrayed as uncivilized (Native Americans), revolutionary (white South Americans) or evil (the Japanese). At the same time Western Europeans are portrayed as smarter and more civilized. However the study also shows that over time there is as significant change in the way that non Western Europeans are portrayed, ranging from the first album to the last. As Hergé gets older, the novels become more sophisticated and the characterizations of people from other cultures than the Western European evolve.

This master thesis introduces the Congo dance, which has been performed in Goiás City (Goiás/Brazil) since the first half of the 18th century. In this ritual, we are able to watch the fight between Moors and Christians. The routine is divided into street parades and representations of an embassy mission, performed by poor Afro-Brazilian men, usually at the city’s Historical Centre (held as a UNESCO world cultural heritage). The performances generally take place during the Divine Holy Ghost and the Our Lady of the Rosary festivals. This is an ethnographic research project, which aims at interpreting the performances of the Congo dance ritual and its complex meaning relations. Therefore, a detailed description of the Congo dance structure was done, by highlighting its gestures, orality, music, clothing and dramatization. Also, as an analytical category, the theoretical background to such cultural performances was reviewed, aiming at analysing the dance and dancers’ embodied knowledge. Furthermore, some questions on the congos’ cultural social historical were raised, bringing some comparison among the thoughts on ethnographic studies on the Congo dance and the possibility of an interlocution between Brandão’s ethnography (1977) and the one presented in this paper. Eventually, the representation and appropriation of this way of expression towards the whole Goiás City’s cultural heritage and how safeguard policy is done were deeply observed. As a conclusion, the study states that the Congo dance from Goiás City is the materialisation of the iconography of people who live, fight, resist and remain.

This work intends to produce a reflection on the Congos de Milagres, a celebration from Ceará Cariri performed as a form of devotion to Our Lady of Rosary. The objective of this research is to analyze the performance of players to interpret music, motion and body interaction as a meaning of expressing their complete devotion. Ethnography was the model used for the research, being the fieldwork the predominant instrument for the data collection. The theoretical basis was the ethnoscenology, where concepts such as spectacularity and thinking body, methodological assumptions applicable to the study of the organization of action and space depending on the look of the other person mediated by a body that produces and interprets meanings were employed. Based on indications native, was shown how to the dance steps are developed, was presented a proposed structuring of performance, was indicated how bodily experiences are crucial to the acquisition of the ability to perform the dance and exhibited the devotional motivation that keeps alive the manifestation.

Abstract:

Abstract:

Abstract:
The study aims to examine how censorship and comics have been discussed in three debates. The aim is also to identify discourses and the orders and relations of power constructed in the debates, and to examine how librarians should handle debates about censorship and comics. Selected sources are articles from Swedish newspapers and tabloids about the debates on the Pox-trial, the manga case and the debate about Tintin in Kulturhuset. The results from the analysis indicates that the debates have been dominated by two main discourses: a discourse on freedom of speech and a discourse on social responsibility. Within the discourse of freedom of speech there is a range of perspectives that emphasize: artistic freedom, the need for open and free conversations, a discussion about how the comics are assessed in comparison with other media formats as well as a discussion about moral and moralism. The discourse of social responsibility results in a feminist and anti-porn discourse, a post-colonial and anti-racist discourse and a discourse on the protection of children and young people. Based on these results, the discourses can be analysed in relation to the laws, values and ethical guidelines for libraries. The analysis indicates that libraries and librarians should keep a balance between freeedom of speech and social responsibility. They could keep up to date with research about censorship, comics and various genres in order to make informed decisions about how to handle comics in the libraries. The librarian should also assess the comics on the same bases as literature, music, film and other cultural expressions.

Full text
Abstract:
This thesis aims to raise awareness of the representations of Self and Others in a widely-distributed and controversial 20th -Century comic book series, Hergé’s The Adventures of Tintin. It explores how selected character roles are constructed, especially regarding their function, ethnicity, and dispersion throughout different narrative plots in these comics. Specifically, the aim here is to create a systematic categorisation of the data by employing a classic narrative analysis and integrating it with other approaches to reveal the discursive construction of ethnic identities in comic books in general and the Tintin series, in particular. To achieve its objectives, this research primarily provides a detailed quantification of panels and speech bubbles in all 23 volumes of the Tintin series and categorises eleven different ethnic groups based on their visual and contextual cues. Such a quantitative analysis enables us to understand the propagation of each ethnic group while setting the ground to explore how Self and Others are represented and constructed in this series. To that end, this research identifies similar and/or repetitive patterns in the narrative structures of these comic books. In order to track such patterns and to answer my research questions, this study applies Propp’s (1928/1968) narrative analysis to disclose the discursive construction of ethnic identities, while synthesising the theoretical assumptions of the Discourse Historical Approach (DHA) (Reisigl and Wodak, 2001/2009) of CDS, as an overarching approach, it also draws on van Dijk’s (2008) strategies of positive-Self and negative Others presentation in his socio-cognitive approach. Additionally, it considers some relevant elements of van Leeuwen’s (2008) visual social actors network model in the analysis of images. The analyses include qualitative case studies from among various ethnic groups in the series (Europeans, Far-East Asians, sub-Saharan Africans, Native Americans, and Jews), which demonstrates the visual and verbal stereotypes through selected texts. Thus, by combining detailed quantitative and qualitative methods, the analysis of each ethnic group reveals discrepancies in the ways character roles are constructed, including differences in both linguistic and visual features. The results show, surprisingly, that Europeans as in-groups are more frequently depicted as ‘villains’ than non-Europeans as out-groups, throughout the series, which can imply negative Self-presentation. Obviously, this does not mean that non-Europeans are represented in a positive way. There may be some complexities which are shown throughout the analysis chapters. An overall analysis of both Europeans and non-Europeans shows an interchangeable dynamic pattern regarding the strategies of positive vs. negative representations of Self and Others in different volumes. That is not the case for Jewish diaspora who do not share such dynamicity. In other words, throughout the series, they are stereotypically constructed in a negative way which can strongly prove the antisemitic ideologies in the Tintin series, considering the socio-historical context of Belgium during the Second World War (1939-1945), a period with its traumatic experience in the 20th century, the Holocaust.

Analysis of the large themes of escapism and adventure, of the way europeans look at africa and africans (africa seen as a background with its fauna, flora, landscapes and human realisations). The way the white sees himself is not forgotten either. The origin, foundings and development of the colonial discourse in the comic strip, from the exaltation of colonization to its criticism, are examined with its sources of inspiration whether literary, ideological iconographic (the cinema included) and the founding mythes and paradigms created by st organ and herge. Abstract:
Should libraries first and foremost be a source of free informationwhere the citizens can find whatever information they want, or dothe librarians have a responsibility for what kind of works theypresent to people on their shelves? A wild debate broke out inSwedish media in September 2012, after the artistic leader ofKulturhuset in Stockholm; Behrang Miri decided to weed out allthe Tintin albums from the children´s library Tiotretton. Hewanted to start a debate on stereotypes in children´s fiction, andwhat damage they do to children who face them. The purpose ofthe thesis is to carry out a discourse analysis of this media debate, and to identify the different views that are expressed on thedemocratic mission of the libraries, what media they shouldpresent. The method and theory is based on the discourse theory ofErnesto Laclau and Chantal Mouffe and their concepts are used toarrange the analysis around certain themes that build up twodifferent discourses; “Freedom of information discourse” and the“Weeding out discourse”.The two main questions are: What views of the public librariesselection of works are expressed in the Tintin debate in Tiotretton, and how do the views relate to each other? What concepts arespecific for the debate, and what meanings do they get in thesedifferent views? In the concluding chapter I discuss which consequences theseopposing opinions can have for the future selection processes ofthe library.

Abstract:
This paper explores the relation between the popular “Tintin” comics by the Belgian artist Hergé and Steven Spielberg’s successful film adaptation “The Adventures of Tintin” (2011) from a linguistic perspective. It explores how language use in the scriptovisual medium of the comic (which combines still images and printed text) is rendered in the audiovisual medium of film (which combines moving images and spoken language). After discussing general linguistic similarities between comics and films and the use of language in each of the two media, the paper compares the representation of voice, accent, thoughts, talking animals, sounds and written language in Spielberg’s screen adaptation to the original printed comic books. It analyses to what extent the language from comic books can be directly transferred to the filmic medium and investigates possible causes underlying any modifications in the above-mentioned domains.

Abstract:
I min analys utgår jag ifrån Johnstons teorier och analysrerar sedan trailrarna till Avatar, The Final Destination, Tron: Legacy, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, The Three Musketeers, The Adventures of Tintin, Men In Black 3 samt The Smurfs.

Abstract:
This study presents a new approach for the understanding of deictics mecanism in comics

The Adventures of Tintin is a famous comic strip in Europe and it has been translated into over sixty languages all over the world. This thesis is about the fifth book in The Adventures of Tintin, which is called The Blue Lotus. The story takes place in China in 1930. At that time, China was a brutal, far-off, and mysterious country to Europeans. So, the author, Hergé, wanted to introduce this strange country to Europeans to represent an accurate cultural image of China. The thesis conducts an intercultural study of this work relating to Chinese cultural images to discover how Westerners saw China at that time. Furthermore, the thesis deals with the ways in which the author represented the Chinese image. This thesis has four parts. The first explains intercultural theory. Today, we live in the world which is full of many cultures. How do different cultures communicate with one another? The second part deals with the image of China in French literary works. Taking into account intercultural communication models, the chapter sets off from an historical view. In order to understand our own culture, we can look at it through the images through which other people see us. However, what kind of messages can we get from literary works? Does French literature reflect our real culture? The third and the fourth parts are the most important in this thesis. These two chapters are based on words and pictures in The Blue Lotus. We will discover how Hergé broke with Westerners’ misunderstandings about China and how he represented the Chinese image. Hergé’s Chinese friend, Tchang, played an important role in this intercultural communication. Because of the effort of Hergé and Tchang, Europeans were able to recognize the real Chinese cultural image. Through this kind of intercultural dialogue we can acquire the advantages of other cultures and complement the defects of our own. Nowadays, we think this equal communication can possibly be realized.
