Abstract:
Art historians have generally drawn sharp distinctions be-tween conceptual art and art-and-technology. This essay reexamines the interrelationship of these tendencies as they developed in the 1960s, focus-ing on the art criticism of Jack Burnham and the artists in-cluded in the Software exhibition that he curated. The historiciza-tion of these practices as distinct artistic categories is examined. By interpreting conceptual art and art-and-technology as reflections and constituents of broad cultural transformations during the information age, the author concludes that the two tenden-cies share important similarities, and that this common ground offers useful insights into late-20th-century art.

Abstract:
Animation art is displayed in front of people in the form of images, and people have long been accustomed to attribute it to image art similar to movies. In a narrow sense, the expression form of anima-tion is really single. If we look at generalized animation from the original intention of animation, anima-tion has a broader development space, and there are more derivative possibilities of interdisciplinary com-bination. Nowadays, it is a pluralistic society, and the freedom, openness and integration of disciplines has become a trend. Starting from summarizing the three commonalities (story, role and performance) derived from the interdisciplinary animation, this paper discusses various possibilities of the interdisciplinary ex-pression forms derived from animation through practical cases.

Antonio, Jennifer. "The creative use of the tin-containing layer on float glass." Thesis, University of Sunderland, 2009. http://sure.sunderland.ac.uk/6490/.

Full text
Abstract:
This research explored the creative potential of the phenomenon of “bloom”, a matt film caused by the expansion of the tin-containing layer on the surface of float glass that occurs when it is reheated to temperatures above 600° C. “Bloom” has long been regarded as a problem, both in industry and by artists using float glass for kilnforming. Under specific conditions designed to stretch the glass the expansion of the tin-containing layer can be controlled sufficiently to produce a new surface effect similar to iridescence, instead of a matt film. The research examined ways of using the new surface to create images in glass. In addition, the hardness of the tin in relation to the glass causes the images to form slight low relief. The visual effects can be contrasted with those of existing methods of creating surfaces on glass and with methods of forming low relief in glass, in being lightreflecting and integral to the medium itself. While the effects are quite subtle, methods derived from creative practice were developed to create artworks that exploited their unique visual characteristics. These are composed of imagery, glass and light. The research has been approached from the perspective of an artist working with the medium of glass. Its purpose was to explain and control the effects sufficiently in order to use them for creative expression. The submission consists of a body of artwork and a written thesis.

Full text
Abstract:
______________________________________________________________________________ MOTS-CLÉS DE L’AUTEUR : art contemporain, document, documentation, exposition, muséalisation, performance, réitération, Guy de Cointet, Esther Ferrer, Claudie Gagnon, Yves Klein, Gina Pane, Tino Sehgal, Françoise Sullivan.

Abstract:
TiN is used commercially as a wear resistant coating on cutting tools and as a diffusion barrier in microelectronics. TiN has gained increased interest as a material for MEMS, however there has been very little work carried out in the area of patterning and releasing TiN for use as a structural MEMS material. This thesis presents an investigation into the patterning and release of filtered arc deposited TiN thin films using surface micromachining techniques. Two novel strategies are presented for patterning TiN thin films and are achieved using excimer laser micromachining and photolithographic wet-etching. TiN was deposited onto single crystal Si and Cr and Cu sacrificial layers on Si. The use of Cr as a sacrificial layer was found to facilitate the best quality patterning of the TiN and hence the majority of the work involved using Cr sacrificial layers. TiN was deposited using partial filtration and full filtration and differences in the ability to selectively laser pattern the TiN from the Cr sacrificial layer are presented. Various analytical techniques were employed to investigate the origin of the difference in laser patterning the TiN thin films. The establishment of TiN and Cr as a novel material combination for surface micromachined MEMS was extended by etching the Cr sacrificial layer to facilitate the release of TiN stress-measurement structures. The major finding of this thesis is that filtered arc deposited TiN thin film on Cr can be used as a material combination to surface micromachine freestanding TiN structures as high quality patterning and etch selectivity can be achieved using both excimer laser micromachining and photolithographic wet-etching.

Abstract:
Titanium nitride (TiN) films are widely applied as diffusion barrier layers in microelectronic devices. The continued miniaturization of such devices not only poses new challenges to material systems design, but also puts high demands on characterization techniques. To gain understanding of diffusion processes that can eventually lead to failure of the barrier layer and thus of the whole device, it is essential to develop routines to chemically and structurally investigate these layers down to the atomic scale. In the present study, model TiN diffusion barriers with a Cu overlayer acting as the diffusion source were grown by reactive magnetron sputtering on MgO(001) and thermally oxidized Si(001) substrates. Cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (XTEM) of the pristine samples revealed epitaxial, single-crystalline growth of TiN on MgO(001), while the polycrystalline TiN grown on Si(001) exhibited a [001]-oriented columnar microstructure. Various annealing treatments were carried out to induce diffusion of Cu into the TiN layer. Subsequently, XTEM images were recorded with a high-angle annular dark field detector, which provides strong elemental contrast, to illuminate the correlation between the structure and the barrier efficiency of the single- and polycrystalline TiN layers. Particular regions of interest were investigated more closely by energy dispersive X-ray (EDX) mapping. These investigations are completed by atom probe tomography (APT) studies, which provide a three-dimensional insight into the elemental distribution at the near-interface region with atomic chemical resolution and high sensitivity. In case of the single-crystalline barrier, a uniform Cu-enriched diffusion layer of 12 nm could be detected at the interface after an annealing treatment at 1000 °C for 12 h. This excellent barrier performance can be attributed to the lack of fast diffusion paths such as grain boundaries. Moreover, density-functional theory calculations predict a stoichiometry-dependent atomic diffusion mechanism of Cu in bulk TiN, with Cu diffusing on the N-sublattice for the experimental N/Ti ratio. In comparison, the polycrystalline TiN layers exhibited grain boundaries reaching from the Cu-TiN interface to the substrate, thus providing direct diffusion paths for Cu. However, the microstructure of these columnar layers was still dense without open porosity or voids, so that the onset of grain boundary diffusion could only be found after annealing at 900 °C for 1 h. The present study shows how to combine two high resolution state-of-the-art methods, TEM and APT, to characterize model TiN diffusion barriers. It is shown how to correlate the microstructure with the performance of the barrier layer by two-dimensional EDX mapping and three-dimensional APT. Highly effective Cu-diffusion barrier function is thus demonstrated for single-crystal TiN(001) (up to 1000 °C) and dense polycrystalline TiN (900 °C).

Abstract:
<p>This document provides case studies of structural rehabilita-tion, repair, retrofitting, strengthening, and upgrading of structures, which might be encompassed – in short – by the convenient umbrella terms “Conservation / Upgrading of Existing Structures”. The selected studies presented in this SED cover a variety of structural types from different countries.</p> <p>Strengthening and rehabilitation of structures is usually a challenge because of uncertainties associated with old struc-tures and difficulties due to restrictions on the geometry and materials used, as well as other structural or functional con-straints. When repairing an existing structure the engineers involved have plenty of possibilities, lots of constraints, and in some cases there are no applicable codes. Strengthening and rehabilitating is sometimes a complex and exciting work; an art.</p> <p>The book is a summary of practices to help structural engineers. The reader of this book will discover different approaches to put forward strengthening or rehabilitation projects. Even identical technical problems could have very different efficient solutions, as discussed in the papers, considering structural, environmental, economic factors, as well as contractor and designer experience, materials, etc.</p>

Abstract:
AbstractChallenge on energy resources exists, especially when the fossil resources are limited. Fuel cells, as an alternative replacement, can be used. Fuel cells with coated bipolar plates are the interest of this paper. Current research is concerned with the effects of CrN/TiN coatings on interfacial contact resistance (ICR). Stainless steel 410 was selected as a base metal, and the coating process was performed using chromium nitride and titanium nitride by cathodic arc evaporation method. It was found that the surface roughness and ICR values of CrN-coated sample are lower than the TiN-coated sample. The concluded that the CrN layer could be replaced with the TiN layer for better performance of bipolar plates.

Abstract:
Building on recent scholarship, this article sketches the development of the Florentine studium of Santa Maria Novella in the thirteenth century, before it became a studium generale between 1305 and 1311. The catalogue of Santa Maria Novella’s library and the information regarding works which were conceived there are collected and analysed to outline the core of the ancient library. The first quire of the manuscript Florence, Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale, Conv. soppr. G 3.451 (cc. 1-8) constitutes a notable case study for the learning interests of Dominican friars. Finally, this article discusses the controversial letter written by Nicholas Trevet to the dedicatee of his commentary on Boethius’ Consolatio Philosophiae and re-assesses its disputed connec- tion with the Florentine environment.

Abstract:
Recommendations are commonly used to modify user’s natural behavior, for example, increasing product sales or the time spent on a website. This results in a gap between the ultimate business ob- jective and the classical setup where recommenda- tions are optimized to be coherent with past user be- havior. To bridge this gap, we propose a new learn- ing setup for recommendation that optimizes for the Incremental Treatment Effect (ITE) of the policy. We show this is equivalent to learning to predict recommendation outcomes under a fully random recommendation policy and propose a new domain adaptation algorithm that learns from logged data containing outcomes from a biased recommenda- tion policy and predicts recommendation outcomes according to random exposure. We compare our method against state-of-the-art factorization meth- ods, in addition to new approaches of causal rec- ommendation and show significant improvements.

<p>This work applies a ultra large scale topology optimization method to study the optimal structure of bridge girders in cable supported bridges.</p><p>The current classic orthotropic box girder designs are limited in further development and optimiza tion, and suffer from substantial fatigue issues. A great disadvantage of the orthotropic girder is the loads being carried one direction at a time, thus creating stress hot spots and fatigue problems. Hence, a new design concept has the potential to solve many of the limitations in the current state of-the-art.</p><p>We present a design method based on ultra large scale topology optimization. The highly detailed structures and fine mesh-discretization permitted by ultra large scale topology optimization reveal new design features and previously unseen eff ects. The results demonstrate the potential of gener ating completely different design solutions for bridge girders in cable supported bridges, which dif fer significantly from the classic orthotropic box girders.</p><p>The overall goal of the presented work is to identify new and innovative, but at the same time con structible and economically reasonable, solutions tobe implemented into the design of future cable supported bridges.</p>

Abstract:
Titanium alloys are gaining widespread acceptance in aerospace industry because of its high specific strength, corrosion resistance and good fatigue properties. Dovetails of the compressor blades, gears, splines etc. are some aerospace components that fail through premature fatigue crack initiation and propagation under the action of wear, fatigue and fretting fatigue. The fretting failure originates from the surface or near surface and leads to the damage of the components. Therefore the surface of components can be modified to improve the tribological performance by plasma nitriding which improve the titanium alloy by forming layer of hard TiN and Ti2N phases on surface. Plasma nitriding of titanium alloys has several advantages over gas and liquid nitriding methods where the phase formation and the depth of nitriding can be controlled. In this study Ti-6Al-4V alloy is taken as surrogate material for gas turbine application and its surface is modified by plasma nitriding at three different temperatures 500, 700 and 800 °C with N2:H2 ratio of 4:1 at 5 mbar pressure for 5 hrs. It is observed from XRD that at 500 and 700 °C temperature, nucleation of ε-Ti2N and δ-TiN started and complete titanium nitride layer formed at 800 °C. Nucleation and growth mechanism was studied by surface and cross section SEM analysis. Nitride layer of around 0.5 μm with ε-Ti2N and around 2 μm thick of both ε-Ti2N and δ-TiN phases were formed at 700 and 800 °C respectively. It is observed that the surface roughness increases with increasing the temperature for plasma nitriding. Vickers microhardness (HV0.1) is observed to be increased from 393.7 HV to 1016.4 HV by plasma nitriding at 800 °C.

Abstract:
The single nano-scale and multi-phase nanocomposite ceramic materials including Al2O3/Al2O3n/SiCn and Al2O3/Ti(C0.7N0.3)n/SiCn are successfully fabricated. Their mechanical properties are better than those of the single-phase alumina material and conventional alumina matrix materials. The multi-scale and single-phase nanocomposite ceramic tool material Al2O3/SiCμ/SiCn is also successfully fabricated. Its flexural strength and fracture toughness is higher than those of single-scale materials Al2O3/SiCμ and Al2O3/SiCn. The multi-scale and multi-phase nanocomposite ceramic tool material Al2O3/TiCμ/TiNn is finally developed by incorporation and dispersion of micro-scale TiC particle and nano-scale TiN particle in alumina matrix, which can get higher flexural strength and fracture toughness than those of Al2O3/TiC ceramic tool material without nano-scale TiN particle. The coexistent function of nano-scale Al2O3 or Ti(C0.7N0.3), nano-scale SiC and TiN can reduce the sintering temperature and sintering duration time as well as the grain size, and improve the material densification and mechanical properties. The nano-scale SiC grains locating along the grain boundary and inside the micro-scale alumina can form the hybria intergranular-intragranular microstructure which can result in hybria intergranular-transgranular fracture and improve the mechanical properties of the ceramic material. Crack deflection, forking and bridging effects are the main cause for improving the fracture toughness of the materials including Al2O3/Ti(C0.7N0.3)n/SiCn and Al2O3/TiCμ/TiNn.

Full text
Abstract:
Dye Sensitized Solar Cell (DSSC) has great advantages over conventional silicon-based photovoltaics as it is inexpensive, flexible, and transparent. Sun energy is used to excite the electron of the organic (ruthenium-polypyridine) dye from which the electron from the dye is injected into the anode made of titanium dioxide (TiO2). The excited electron enters the conduction band of the TiO2 and gets transmitted across the TiO2 nanoparticles (anode) to the FTO (Fluorine-doped tin-oxide) glass/electrode, which in turn go to the external circuit powering the electrical load. The electron returns to the device via the counter electrode coated with a platinum catalyst to the electrolyte, typically iodide/tri-iodide, wherein the iodide ions carry the electron back to regenerate the dye attached to the TiO2 nanofibers. Improvement can be made by using 60–120 nm diameter TiO2 nanofibers produced in our lab, for which electrons can be directly transferred to the FTO reducing the recombination rate. Also, the large surface-to-volume ratio of the nanofibers allows numerous sites for attachment of the organic dye molecules, thereby increasing the capture of sunlight. In order to achieve high conversion efficiency, several critical parameters need to be optimized with the nanofiber-based DSSC. In this study, we investigate the thickness of the anode (TiO2 nanofiber) on the conversion efficiency. The conversion efficiency of the DSSC in our laboratory can reach more than 7%. Other improvements are believed to further boost this efficiency.

Jung, Carina, Matthew Carr, Eric Fleischman, and Chandler Roesch. Response of the green June beetle and its gut microbiome to RDX and phenanthrene. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), November 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/38799.

Full text
Abstract:
Green June beetles are a cosmopolitan pest in the United States. Adults are voracious consumers of tree and vine fruit, while their larvae can dam-age and inadvertently consume root systems, particularly those of grasses, as they move through the soil and forage for detritus. Larvae ingest and process large volumes of soil while in the process of feeding. Due to their intimate contact with the soil it was hypothesized that soil contaminants that are known animal toxins would perturb the larval and affect their overall health and survival. Studies of this kind are important contribu-tions to the development of new model organisms and our understanding of interactions between the environment, contaminants, gut microbiome, and animal development, health, and survival. It is important to continue to develop relevant model organisms for monitoring toxicity as regulations for working with vertebrates becomes more prohibitive. In this study green June beetle larvae were exposed to RDX and phenanthrene through-out their entire soil-bound development, starting within the first few days of hatching through to their emergence as adults. The overall findings included that even at high concentrations, RDX and phenanthrene (25 ppm) exerted no significant effect on body weight or survival. Also, there was lit-tle apparent effect of RDX and phenanthrene on the bacterial microbiome, and no statistical association with measurable health effects. Nevertheless, the green June beetle is an interesting model for soil toxicity experiments in the future as is it easy to collect, house, and handle.

Abstract:

Asenath-Smith, Emily, Emma Ambrogi, Lee Moores, Stephen Newman, and Jonathon Brame. Leveraging chemical actinometry and optical radiometry to reduce uncertainty in photochemical research. Engineer Research and Development Center (U.S.), September 2021. http://dx.doi.org/10.21079/11681/42080.

Full text
Abstract:
Subtle aspects of illumination sources and their characterization methods can introduce significant uncertainty into the data gathered from light-activated experiments, limiting their reproducibility and technology transition. Degradation kinetics of methyl orange (MO) and carbamazepine (CM) under illumination with TiO₂ were used as a case study for investigating the role of incident photon flux on photocatalytic degradation rates. Valerophenone and ferrioxalate actinometry were paired with optical radiometry in three different illumination systems: xenon arc (XE), tungsten halogen (W-H), and UV fluorescent (UV-F). Degradation rate constants for MO and CM varied similarly among the three light systems as k W-H < kiv-F < kXE, implying the same relative photon flux emission by each light. However, the apparent relative photon flux emitted by the different lights varied depending on the light characterization method. This discrepancy is shown to be caused by the spectral distribution present in light emission profiles, as well as absorption behavior of chemical actinometers and optical sensors. Data and calculations for the determination of photon flux from chemical and calibrated optical light characterization is presented, allowing us to interpret photo-degradation rate constants as a function of incident photon flux. This approach enabled the derivation of a calibrated ‘rate-flux’ metric for evaluating and translating data from photocatalysis studies.

National report 2009-2019 - Rural NEET in Croatia. OST Action CA 18213: Rural NEET Youth Network: Modeling the risks underlying rural NEETs social exclusion, December 2020. http://dx.doi.org/10.15847/cisrnyn.nrhr.2020.12.

Full text
Abstract:
This report presents the situation of rural Youths Neither in Employment, nor in Education or Training (NEET) in Croatia, aged between 15 and 34 years old, in the period from 2009 until 2019. To achieve this goal, the report utilised indicators of youth population, youth em-ployment and unemployment, education and NEETs distribution. The characterisation of all indicators adopted the degree of urbanisation as a central criteria, enabling comparisons between rural areas, towns and suburbs, cities and the whole country. These analyses are further collapsed into age sub-groups and, when possible, in sex groups for greater detail. The statistical procedures adopted across the different selected dimensions involved des-criptive longitudinal analysis, using figures (e.g., line charts) as well as the calculation of abso-lute and relative changes between 2009 and 2013, 2013 and 2019 and 2009 and 2019. These time ranges were chosen to capture the indicators evolution before and after the economic crisis that hit European countries. All data was extracted from Eurostat public datasets. The analyses show that between 2009 and 2019 rural youth population aged 15 to 24 years has been decreasing in Croatia. Youth unemployment was marked by two distinct periods, one from 2009 to 2013 (with higher rates of youth unemployment) and another from 2013 to 2019 (with the decrease in unemployment rates, with lower unemployment rates in ci-ties and higher in towns and suburbs and rural areas). In the field of education, however, there has been a decrease of the Croatian population with lower levels of education and an increase of the proportion of those with higher educational attainment. Finally, the propor-tion of NEETs in Croatia is higher in rural areas compared to cities and towns and suburbs, revealing territorial inequalities in access to employment and education opportunities.
