Abstract:
We study the stability and dynamics of melting icebergs. Specifically, we address the ‘toppling’ or ‘rollover’ observed for floating icebergs. The rollover is thought to occur because the ocean melts the iceberg from below, causing its overall mass and mass distribution to change with time. We model the evolution of equilibrium positions for a general homogeneous body afloat in an ideal fluid, as this homogeneous body is subjected to ‘melting’, i.e. a slow removal of material from the submerged part. If this process is the dominating melting mechanism, can the likelihood of a toppling be infer

Abstract:
AbstractDuring 2000–07, five giant icebergs (B15A, B15J, B15K, C16 and C25) adrift in the southwestern Ross Sea, Antarctica, were instrumented with global positioning system (GPS) receivers and other instruments to monitor their behavior in the near-coastal environment. The measurements show that collision processes can strongly influence iceberg behavior and delay their progress in drifting to the open ocean. Collisions appear to have been a dominant control on the movement of B15A, the largest of the icebergs, during the 4-year period it gyrated within the limited confines of Ross Island, th

We report the case of a 64-year-old pseudophakic patient in a rural area who chronically suffered from headache with eye pain and was on analgesics for pain relief but never turned up to an ophthalmologist. There was lack of awareness to visit an ophthalmologist for headache as he thought that after undergoing cataract surgery, the role of ophthalmologist was limited. His approach to our centre was only after intense headache with sudden loss of vision. He had actually developed secondary glaucoma due to pupillary block angle closure as a late complication following yttrium aluminium garnet ca

For nearly 80 years clinical melioidosis has been considered a rare disease. This bacterial infection is caused by Pseudomonas pseudomallei, a saprophyte found in soil and surface water of endemic areas. Consequently, those who have most contact with soil, the rural poor, are likely to be at greatest risk of infection. Since the diversity of clinical manifestations necessitates the isolation and identification of the causative organism for a definitive diagnosis of melioidosis and the population at greatest risk within endemic areas rarely have access to an appropriate level of health care, th

AbstractArbib's How the brain got language is a major achievement in defining a trajectory for the evolution of complex imitation and the language-ready brain leading to human language. In addition to these capabilities, I will suggest that it is useful to consider two additional components of human brain function that are intricately related to the emergence of language. These are, first, the profound human motivation to represent and share the psychological states of others, and second, the related complex semantic system that represents the contents of what is communicated in language.
